I was at a pinball museum recently and just happened to play this machine. MUSIC STUCK WITH ME BRO. Fun fact: the music people went on to do Mortal Kombat.

I finally got around to watching Pirates of the Caribbean for the first time and on multiple occasions I laughed significantly. Johnny Depp is an icon.

Hi I’m Steven, and welcome to another episode of “My Girlfriend Got Me Addicted to Yuri on Ice and Now My Life Is An Ice Skating Homo Dumpster Fire”, it’s been far too long since I’ve done any legit cosplays...But I get really bored and this shit happens. 

I wasn’t really going to do anything with Yurio, just set it aside for her, but I was bored and sick and said fuck it..The I remembered I had a wig that I got for Jean from Attack on Titan and never used, and was like...Oh wait....Bootayful is happening. 

I got my wig that I was fully intended to use for Otabek and JJ, and I’m not really pleased with it, so I gave up and went to the opposite end of the cast, since my girlfriend are also doing Victuri eventually... I HAVE A PROBLEM AND SOMEONE NEEDS TO STOP ME FROM DICKING AROUND SO MUCH WITH WIGS AND HALF-ASSED MAKEUP WHEN I SHOULD BE CLEANING MY APARTMENT AND WRITING FINISHING UP THE LIKE 10 FICS I’VE STARTED. But no one is here to do that...so I digress.

I’m too busy to write something new for Asexual Awareness Week, so here’s a translation of an old story, with a very questioning but very a-spec Yuri Katsuki! :D He sure is Japan’s ace, am I right.

For the fourth time this week, Yuri Katsuki woke up around midnight because of Vic. Not, not Vic: Makkachin. It turned out that this dog somehow found a way to sneak in his room and nestled against him.

The first time, Yuri hadn't been surprised. In the dreamlike fog he had simply thought it was his own dog next to him, not thinking it couldn't be anymore. His heart felt heavy when his senses joined his consciousness and he realized it was “only” Makkachin. He hugged the poodle and let his warm lulling him to a deeply calm sleep. The next morning, Makkachin had been gone and Yuri wondered if this hadn't been a dream.

Makkachin made sure Yuri had no doubt left on the very next evening. He joined him earlier in the night, while the skater was still awake. Yuri had turned his head at the sound of the door watching in silence as his coach's dog came nearer. Yuri still couldn't believe how much he looked like Vic. He knew it already, of course, that's why he had chosen a poodle back then. But beyong their breed: the two dogs were alike up to their behavior. This time though, Yuri hadn't let Makkachin stay; he had walked him back to Victor's room.

The third time, Makkachin had started pouting as soon as Yuri had stood up and Yuri had to walk between the two doors several times before he accepted to stay with Victor. Of course, it was adorable, everytime Yuri had to look away from Makkachin was a heartbreak and he would have let him lay with him with pleasure. But he couldn't help to thin that when Makkachin was with him, he wasn't with Victor. Those two loved each other a lot and besides the silly jealousy, Yuri knew Victor sincerely missed Makkachin.

When Yuri walked Makkachin back to Victor's room this fourth time, the light was still on. Victor was sitting crossed-legs on his bed and he raised his head from his work to question Yuri with a look.

“He keeps wanting to sleep with me”, he explained.

Maybe it was Yuri's dull tone or the innuendo – or both – but Victor immediately started laughing. He only calmed down to open his arms for his dog who rushed into them. He started stroking him and talking as if Yuri wasn't there.

“So then, you'd rather be with Yuri? That's why you were standing me up?”

Victor pouted fixing Makkchin, as if he was waiting for an apology – Yuri had no doubt this method worked, because it would totally work on him. Then Victor whispered a russian word and started smiling again, kissing Makkachin. There, he was forgiven.

“Oh after all, I feel you. I'd like to invite myself in Yuri's bed too.”

There was no need to eye the young man near the door to know he was embarrassed, but it didn't stop Victor – wouldn't it have been a shame to miss the red slowly staining his chubby cheeks?

“You're gonna stay there all night?” asked Victor.

This time, Yuri was clearly blushing.

“No, I-”

As soon as Yuri started leaving, Makkachin jumped from the bed and joined him at the door.

“Well.. I don't really have a choice...”

If he was asked, Yuri wouldn't be able to tell how, exactly, he ended up under Victor's sheets, laying next to him. Makkachin found a place at the edge of the bed, sleeping deeply. As for Yuri, he was more awake than asleep.

Yuri felt Victor's arms and chest clinging to him in the middle of the night. After that, he was even more concerned. No matter how well he felt in this new situation, he couldn't let it go. Because if he felt alseep now, everything was going to fade away and the next morning will be there without him realizing it, without him enjoying it. And when Victor pressed harder, it was other worries which kept him awake – the same which were to blame for the wall he built around his heart.

If he let go, wouldn't Victor expect more? Because that was what come next – at least he thought so. And Yuri may had danced about his eros, it didn't change anything to the fact he didn't feel ready no- he didn't want to go there. It wasn't his thing, and he was afraid Victor wouldn't understand, wouldn't accept it. And it was that, more than the warm of this body, more than the delight of this intimacy, which prevented him from falling asleep.

He could hear the deep breathing of Makkachin and Victor as he fixed the wall, growing more and more tensed by each second. He would have given a lot to be able to enjoy this moment without worrying – damn he would have given up pork cutlet bowl.

Victor's whispers at his ear almost made him jumped. Feeling his muscles tighten, Victor loosen his embrace and repeated.

“You're okay?”

At first, Yuri didn't want to reply at all. Faking being asleep was easier, even if he wasn't fooling anyone. Victor would have not pressure him. But Yuri had just decided to open up, at least a little, and it started by not avoiding issues.

“Hm.”

“You want me to release you?”

“No! No, it's not that.”

What it was, Yuri wasn't sure to know how to say it. It was a mess, and putting words on his feelings had never been his forte. Communication was always difficult. Except with Victor. Victor didn't ask for long explainations, he didn't ask anything too specific. He let him show what he wanted, when he wanted. As if he had understood everything when he saw him skating in this video. As if he had seen everything and decided to help Yuri understanding himself.

“I would never do anything you don't want to.”

Yuri smiled. Here, as he thought: he didn't even have to explain what he didn't fully get himself. It was simple and reasurring. And it could have been enough to calm him down, enough for him to sleep, but he tought Victor deserved a better answer than mumbling. Moreover, hadn't Victor said he wanted to know his secrets? He had to start somewhere.

“I never had a girlfriend because I don't care.”

Victod didn't move, as if nothing was weird in Yuri's words. And even in his reply, he stayed calm, as if they were talking about the weather.

“It's a bit misogynistic”, he teased.

“No, I mean, I do care about them. But not about the relationship, the dates, the pressure, all that. I think I could like it, but not with anybody, and only in some ways. I think..”

“I see.”

“Really? Because you're more the kind to date a lot so.. I thought.. hm..”

Yuri was hesitating, unable to put his thoughts in order and to find the right words, so Victor felt free to cut him.

“I do get it. Everything isn't for everyone, and there's no reason for that to be different.”

Yuri stayed speechless. Because this very simple idea – the fact that everyone was different, with different desire, different boundaries – never even crossed his mind. To be face with this truth was beautiful, and even more moving that it came from Victor – somehow to Yuri, it was very important. Without really thinking – because if he had take the time to question himself about what he was doing, the embarrassment would have stop him for ten years-, Yuri escaped from Victor's arms and turned around to see his face. He was slighty higher in the bed, so he slowly tilted his head and let his lips brush against Victor's forehead – and some hair.

“What? It was that chessy?” asked Victor, half-laughing.

“No. Everything's fine.”

History of YOI fandom

As a YOI fandom grandparent, I felt it was my duty to write out all the fandom explosions for the newer fans who weren’t there to witness the big bang and gradual week-by-week creation of this universe. All the arguments, people blowing things out of proportion, blaming characters, death theories, awesome fans clearing up miscommunications, YOI breaking the internet... 

This isn’t a post to call out specific people on their arguments and theories - I’ll stay respectfully away from restarting flames and picking fights, thankyouverymuch. Rather, this is an overview of the topics and conflicting views that swept across hundreds and thousands of people and prompted strong reactions. I’m doing this now, because I know that 6 months later, 1 year later, 3 years later, etc. there will be new fans who will have many of the same exact arguments. We’ve been there and done that. I see fans now who say things without knowing where the spelling/quote comes from, or who don’t realize how much has changed, or don’t know why there are certain perceptions of characters. So here’s a little bit of passing down history.

I also don’t want to forget the crazy ride this was. Laugh with me at the silly theories; smile with me at how deeply YOI has impacted our lives. For those of us old-timers, let’s take a trip down memory lane. Remember when...

Pre-series

Idea that there would be a love triangle (Yuri P.--Yuri K.--Victor)

Some fans started spelling Yuri Katsuki with two “u” in order to tell them apart.

Victuri ship name created for Victor x Yuri K. (in a comment to the PV)

The title

“lol ‘Yuri’ on Ice? Where are all the lesbians?”

“When it said Yuri on Ice, I thought we would get girls. Y’know what I mean?”

“Yuri on Ice? More like Yaoi on Ice! amiright?”

etc.

J.J. misspelling (English spelling “Jean Jack” instead of French Canadian “Jean-Jacques”)

you can see the remnants of this in the audience banners during the episodes, but it was corrected to “Jean-Jacques” on the official website and the in-show text

Phichit x Seung-gil ship created (there was more art for this than for Victor x Yuuri)

Episode 1

Victor vs. Viktor spelling arguments 

Although “Victor” is the official spelling and seen in-show, people argued that the creators are wrong and that we fans know better than them about Russian culture - thus the “Viktor” spelling was born.

People argued back that spelling is subjective and you can spell a name multiple ways and still be correct - thus transliterating his Russian name into English as “Victor” would be just as acceptable.

The YOI wiki held fast for a time on using official spellings and information from the official website, but the transition of power led to a new team that started using agreed-upon info rather than solely using official info. “Viktor” replaced “Victor” on the website.

this change from “Victor” to “Viktor” on the wiki happened around episode 2~3, but the arguments were in the page comments since episode 1 -- with moderators explaining their reasoning with sticking to official sources.

Victor is a flirtatious over-the-top character who will seduce Yuuri

Victor is the overwhelming seme and Yuuri is the shy whimpering uke.

People dropping the anime because Yuuri is overweight; people commenting that they don’t want to see an overweight main character

in addition, some people dropping YOI due to feeling that the series was “fat shaming” by using Yuuri’s weight as a point of comedy.

Conversely, some people praising that we have a main character that gains weight and actually has an overweight appearance. 

“Japanese Yuri” &“Russian Yuri” or “Yuri K.” &“Yuri P.” were used to differentiate between the two characters since they shared the same official English spelling “Yuri”.

Starting with ep1, “Yuuri” spelled with two “u” became more widespread due to convenience when typing.  

Japanese fandom simply used kanji for Yuri Katsuki and katakana for Yuri Plisetsky. 

Some fans argue that Yuuri is more correct because in Japanese his name is ゆうり(yu-u-ri). Other fans argue that “Yuri” is still acceptable transliteration because there are multiple spelling systems (Hepburn, etc.) and an alternative correct spelling would be with a macron (Yūri).

Fans point out that Yuri’s name would be spelled “Yuri” in official documents anyway due to lack of macrons on many keyboards.

Spoilers for episodes 1-3 were out because of the two Western fans who witnessed the first three episodes of YOI in a Tokyo preview screening.

fans relied on a certain blogger for info on YOI. 

“WHERE DID YOU SEE EPISODES 2&3???” was asked every 5-10 minutes (literally) and became an inside joke with us old-timers.

Yuuri = Yuzuru Hanyu, Victor = Evgeni Plushenko.

Some fans link characters with real-life skaters to encourage anime fans to watch real skating. 

Some fans saw these as one-to-one connections without considering that characters are a mix of various real-life skaters, and then went onto YouTube videos and spammed about “real-life Yuuri.” 

YOI fans being rude to skaters and sending emails to ship these real-life skaters (emails sent even to skaters who are married with kids)

find Victor’s apartment and the beach from the ending credits Instagram roll.

Love hotel

Makkachin’s name found in magazine Yuko was holding 

speculation starts on what “Makkachin” means and how it should be transliterated (Makkatine, Mocatine, Makkatin, etc.)

Comparisons of Yuuri to the main character from Parasyte due to similar appearances (Tadashi Hiramatsu, the character designer who adapted Kubo-sensei’s initial designs for animating, was the main character designer for Parasyte).

Speculation on the year in-series starts. 

Yoyogi for Worlds doesn’t match with Sochi as the GPF location.

Yuuri’s iPhone model is seen as a clue.

“Yuri on Ice” trends for 6 days on Tumblr

Episode 2

Victor is manipulative:

He’s a playboy and flirting all the time 

In episode 1 Minako mentions that he is desired by millions. 

His wink in episode 1 shows that he casually flirts with fans.

He will break Yuuri’s heart. He came to romance Yuuri, then drop him later.

He’s already pushing into Yuuri’s space with the chin-touching. That MUST mean he’s suave and planning to seduce and drop him.

“Victor calling him ‘piglet’ is so mean!” -- an extension to the fat shaming debate of episode 1.

Yakov’s angry comment to the press = more fodder about Victor being selfish and only there in Hasetsu for his own pleasure.

Victor is horrible because he broke his promise to Yurio x-number of years ago.

All of his happy smiles are a facade and he can’t actually be that nice. 

Counterarguments to trust the creators and wait to see more about these characters because it’s only been 2 episodes.

Koibito translation nitpicking (it’s not “girlfriend,” Victor is saying “lover.” It’s a gender-neutral term.)

After the series, we saw Oh!SkaTra!!! and the DVD/BD volumes sell ridiculous amounts - easily placing in either 1st or 2nd place on Oricon’s charts for DVD, BD, CD, and CD digital release. The Blu-ray and DVD volumes continue to hold high sales. Magazines continue to be translated. Some ideas/meta are confirmed and others become defunct.

It was a wild ride from way back when YOI was only a website and PV. Every week brought new ideas, writings, meta, art, and discussions. It was to the point where some weeks you would get in-depth meta and polished art just hours after the episode aired. In fact, there was so much made that you could easily reblog hundreds of posts in a day for the more explosive episodes, and meta would either get hundreds of notes or be lost in the current of new stuff appearing every few minutes. At the rate that it’s still going with new campaigns, events, and merchandise, Yuri!!! on ICE will be active for quite some time.

thoughts after Yuri on Ice ep7

1:15 AM 11/25/2016 Honestly, I've been reluctant to post about Yuri on Ice ep7, because the fandom is so focused on the romance, especially in this episode, but I don't see Victuri ready for that step yet.  And more importantly, there are other things, some more important things, going on in this series.  

6:25 AM 11/21/2016 I have to admit that before I watched Yuri on Ice ep7, I had seen the spoiler screengrabs on Tumblr.  After ep6, I just wanted to see what the fandom was like!  I totally wasn't looking for spoilers!  ;o;  Everyone was posting screengrabs of the most spoilery moment in ep7.  -.-;  Fortunately, I've been mostly immune to spoilers for the majority of my life.  (It wasn't until Madoka Magica when I discovered spoilers were finally effecting me.)  For me, the value of a series is in every scene's ability to be an enjoyable experience, each and every time it's re-watched.  So I don't really care about knowing what happens.  To me, what counts is if the series is actually able to make me _feel_ what happens, with its presentation.  So I thought, "What the heck, I'll just go ahead and watch ep7, without writing my reactions during it."  After all, there's not much surprise for me to document in my reactions, when the most spoilery moment was already spoiled.  

But I will say that I was surprised to see the YOI fandom so gung-ho about this new series being like a flagship of homosexual romance anime.  It felt strange to me, because I had been aware of the yaoi/BL/shonen ai genre(s) for the longest time.  Not that that genre is realistic enough to count as an actual "homosexual romance" to take seriously.  Yuri on Ice is able to differentiate itself from those pre-established BL and Romance genres, because it was marketed as a mainstream anime.  (In this post-Haikyuu era, lots of manga publishers and anime producers seem to be betting on the "sports anime" genre for their next popular series.  Much in the same way that after Bleach and Death Note became popular, Shinigami became a copied trend, along with strong, no-nonsense heroines with short dark hair, styled after Rukia Kuchiki, like Tokiko Tsumura, Ryo Miyakozuka, Mikasa Ackerman, etc.)  With that mainstream marketing, Yuri on Ice was able to get a lot of eyeballs on it, which necessitated that it smooth out a lot of the niche quirks from the BL genre.  Actually, the series isn't rooted in the BL genre nor is it basing itself as a primarily Romance genre story, so that's probably what actually saved it from the unrealistic melodramatic cliches of the BL and Romance genres.  According to Tweets from both the director and writer, they initially wanted to avoid a romance story, especially a heterosexual romance, because both had been overdone and they were tired of all the associated cliches.  (Especially in Japan, where stringent gender roles had mapped out a whole overused outline of heterosexual romance stories.)  But when the writer noticed the characters taking on a life of their own and taking the story to a romantic leaning, the director simply encouraged that they just go with it and let the characters do what they want.  The story _organically_ evolved into containing a homosexual romance.  Still, it's also trying to juggle "character study", "sports anime", and Romance, all at once.  Because of that, even though the series is gradually embracing more romantic elements, Yuri on Ice is able to avoid being predominated by a lot of the trite "harlequinn novel"-esque cliches from the BL and Romance genres.  Yuri on Ice feels more like a Drama that happens to have some romance, rather than _just_ a Romance with all the cliche unbelievable melodrama.  In addition, Yuri on Ice is also trying to be a "sports anime", so it has no time to waste on becoming a primarily Romance genre series.  Though I still feel that Yuri on Ice isn't exactly an effective "sports anime", it is still enough of a "sports anime" to keep the story from becoming nothing but a Romance genre story.  Which I'm glad for, because like the writer, I'm getting tired of those cliches too (unless there's a good reason to pursue them).  So I was very surprised to see the YOI fandom so incredibly focused on the romantic subplot of the story.  

Not that Yuri on Ice doesn't have a few Romance genre cliches.  Like I noted in my reactions to episodes 1-5, so much of Victor's first appearance in Hasetsu, insisting on becoming Yuri's coach, is just too reminiscent of the "otherworldly girl" subgenre (what TV Tropes calls the "Magical Girlfriend" trope).  A specific section of the "harem anime" genre, it usually involves some unbelievably attractive girl, coming out of no where, from a completely different world, to insistently attach herself to the passive, herbivore protagonist, thus turning his world upside-down, with her "powers", lack of familiarity with the mundane, and the people from her world, following after her.  (If Yuri on Ice had stayed to that formula, Yurio would have stayed in Hasetsu, living with Yuri, Victor, and Katsuki family, all together.)  Urusei Yatsura, Ah! Megami-sama, Tenchi Muyo, Saber Marionette J, Wish, etc.  Very specific cliches and tropes from that genre, are preformed by Victor, despite the writer's interviews saying that she wanted to avoid Romance genre cliches.  Thank goodness that was her intention, because she kept the cliches to a subtle minimum, yet still kept enough, to use what was effective about them:  comedy and plot progression.  Even in episode 7, she kept the cliche "manly" trait of "I don't know what to do when people cry in front of me", because "manly men aren't experienced enough with emotions to know how to handle the intensity of crying"---as the misleading stereotype goes.  ^^;;;;;  Also in episode 7, Victor was threatening to enact another cliche, the BL genre "kiss to calm you down".  But even in that scene, you could still sense the writer's reluctance to let Romance genre tropes take the wheel.  She put a stop to that trope by writing Yuri as shouting back to Victor what would really be appropriate, rather than just allowing a big splash-page kiss, that editors usually tell their manga-ka to bait readers with, through fanservice.  That was refreshing.  Sure, 1 or 2 scenes later, the writer let Victor fully enact a different BL/Romance/Shoujo manga trope, the "dramatic tackle-kiss out of no where", but I feel it was appropriate to the moment.  Whereas, in the BL, Romance, and Shoujo genres, such a cliche is usually baseless or given little supporting context...other than cheesecake fanservice to snare an audience.  

Honestly, after ep7, the YOI fandom became a minefield.  Any criticism or differing interpretation of Victuri seems to be taken as a homophobic statement.  So I've been reluctant to post anything about Yuri on Ice anymore.  But my blog is a record of my fandom, for *me*.  It serves as _my memory_, so I should post what I want.  And what I want to acknowledge is that even though I would love some Victuri, Yuri is an inexperienced, unromantically-inclined virgin, and that archetype, in anime and manga, has repeatedly been used for much more slow-burn love stories, where that archetype often doesn't even realize they are in love.  (Ryo McClean from Fake; Sawako Kuronuma from Kimi ni Todoke; etc.)  It's very much unlike the usual Romance genre, where all characters are constantly looking for love, know it when they feel it, and often even jump too soon into misinterpreted relationships, based on false assumptions of love's presence.  And for those of us who relate to characters whose lives don't revolve completely around Romance, for those of us who relate to the unromantically-inclined, passive protagonist, there's preference for seeing a story develop solid reasons and at a gradual pace, to allow for emotionally visceral processing.  That is what the pure-hearted, inexperienced virgin archetype often provides in their romance stories, and it'd be a shame to turn him into another dime-a-dozen rom-com protagonist.  I mean, if virgin little innocent Yuri actually fell in love, I'd expect the story to show the full weight of that realization _ON-SCREEN_ and give it the time for dramatic weight.  I think anything less, like off-screen implication or narrative exposition dump, would be an insult to Victuri and to any fans of Katsuki Yuri.  Even the fact that the YOI series is trying to be a "sports anime" doesn't excuse it from relegating its romantic subplot offscreen, especially the milestone points of a romantic subplot.  YOI, in my opinion, has functioned more as a "character study" story than anything else.  And as such, a romantic relationship involving the protagonist, is too important of a life event, to give sub-parr portrayal, through limited time and mere on-screen implications.  Katsuki Yuri is a character who started the series feeling alone, and his whole arc seems to be growing into realizing he is not alone, by (re-)forging bonds with other people.  The most intense type of human relationships is romantic, and with such significance, especially in relation to Yuri's type of character development, if YOI doesn't portray his realization into love, on-screen and given all the time it needs in portrayal, for the full emotional impact---especially for a "character study"---I will pitch a fit.  I want my Victuri to have the red carpet rolled out for its portrayal and given all the luxurious prep it deserves.  Anything less, like simply laying responsibility on the audience to just assume things about the most important relationship in Katsuki Yuri's life, and I will be beyond disappointed.

Currently I’m really into Klance (Keith x Lance from Voltron), Victuri (Viktor x Yuuri from Yuri on Ice), and Bumbleby (Blake x Yang from RWBY). *coughs* Mako x Haru from Free. I just. It doesn’t do anything for me. I used to like it about the same as Rinharu actually, but as time went on I leaned more and more towards Rinharu until I didn’t really care much for MH anymore.
