Ahhh thank you!! This one was actually very, very fun. Mike would love Victorian Flower Language, but he'd do it in the weirdest ways. (I put in a little guide to the plants at the bottom)

Prologue:

September 1882. Detective Michael Wheeler is called on by a past flame to investigate a mysterious death in Moreshead, an isolated sea town at the end of a lonely cape. As secrets start to unravel and the suspect list stacks up, Mike finds himself descending further into the lure of his opium pipe and his burgeoning obsession with the enigmatic William Byers.

Silly little Mike and Will in the Regency era AU (I'm thinking Emma by Jane Austin) that is dear to my heart - ignoring the historical shit going on at the time because I'm not a historian or an American. i'm here for vibes only.

The party grew up in a country town not too far from the city, where the Wheelers could man a mansion while Ted could still commute in for work.

Will lived closed by on one of the Wheelers' mills and quickly became friends with young Mike who kept running away to the Byers' mill to hide from his tutors/nannies.

Karen decided to just let Will study along with Mike because it's literally the only way Mike got anything done.

Eventually, Lucas and Dustin, son of the blacksmith and seamstress/saloon owner respectively, join their little study party.

When Will turned 15, the Byers' moved to the city because Joyce married Hopper. It was as tearful a goodbye as you can imagine. Mike tried going into the city with his dad for a few times to see Will, but eventually it stopped happening.

After Will left, and the party lost all contact with him, Mike became way more withdrawn and depressed.

Eventually at age 20, The Wheelers want Mike to marry and they have the perfect candidate. A certain Jane Brenner from a town not far away. They hire a portrait painter to sent her a portrait of Mike.

Mike comes downstairs one day, already in a horrible mood because he's supposed to sit down for a portrait for hours to send to some girl he's never even met before that he's supposed to marry, only to find Will standing in the foyer.

Mike is stunned.

Karen is already chatting with Will, happy to see him again and baffle in the coincidence of the portrait painter sending his apprentice. (it's not a coincidence. she planned this because she could tell Mike needed his friend.)

They're awkward at first, unsure of how to act. There's rules after all and Mike knows even a simple hug would be too much for him.

They reconnect while Will paints him, spending hours together every day getting the portrait done, and spending the nights chatting by the fire (as Will is staying at the Wheelers' for the time it takes him to finish the portrait).

It doesn't take much for everyone to notice how Mike brightens again, how he's happier than he's been in a very long time.

Will of course also gets to reunite with the party, who are just as excited to see him. It's no surprise that Lucas is already engaged to Max and that Will has just missed the engagement announcement that had been sent out to the Byers' home.

One night, after a night of drinking some wine and laughing a little bit too much, the tension between Mike and Will finally breaks, kissing each other like it's their dying breath.

They spend their last week wrapped up in each other, enjoying every secret minute they can get together until they can't possibly pretend the portrait hasn't long been finished.

Eventually, the portrait is sent out and Will has to leave again, but they both have more incentive now to continue finding ways to visit each other. Mike is working with his father anyway, learning out in the city so it's easier to meet up more frequently.

Months later miss Jane comes to visit and make the engagement official. Once again, the painter is invited as well to commemorate the first meeting.

Mike gets engaged as he's supposed to. Jane is nice enough. Polite, yet shy, and even Will gets along better with her than he'd thought he would despite the jealousy.

They both know there's no other option for the both of them.

Except, a few weeks into their engagement, the night before the wedding, Jane catches them together.

Mike and Will are terrified, but it's Jane that begs Mike not to break off the engagement.

Jane asks to strike a deal; she won't say anything either way, but if they get married, she'll help them hide their relationship. In turn, she gets to be Mike's Wife instead of Brenner's Daughter.

It doesn't take much for Mike and Will to understand that Brenner is not a nice a man as a seems to everyone else, and she just wants to get out of an abusive situation so they all agree.

They're all super nervous for the wedding the next day, and as much as Will hated watching Mike marry someone else, he was best man, and that very evening, as promised, Mike gets to fall asleep next to Will instead of Jane.

Mike and Jane's marital home is not far from the Wheelers' manor, and it's big and spacious. Jane takes up so many hobbies - always trying something new - and they all become great friends.

Brenner still keeps bugging them, but then Jane provides some information to Will, who passes it on to Hopper and suddenly Brenner is getting arrested for some fraud/inhumane practices or whatever.

In the process, Hopper and Jane become closer.

They barely have to pretend, all very easily affectionate with each other, and Will and Mike are often in the city for work, meaning that Will isn't there often enough to stir too much suspicion.

Even if Will were to be there a little too much, no one would bat their eyes because Will and Jane very obviously love each other like siblings, and Jane and Mike have such great affection for each other that no one would doubt their "love".

And the entire Byers family is very adamant of having adopted Jane, despite her already being a married woman.

They're all very grateful for each other and love each other dearly.

just realising that a big part of the anti byler spice movement could be that finn and noah themselves have been somewhat elusive in terms of romantic relationships and sex irl. like, imagine this was the 90s and they were in and out of famous couples, falling out of clubs, in the papers every other day for being the toy boy teen pinups. people would have gotten used to the idea of the actors being sexual/romantic/grownup, with other real life people, and that would translate to their characters by visual proxy.

the narrative is that byler are still seen as young in the show, and we saw them as kids, so its weird to think of them coming of age. but i think its because finn and noah are both so private irl and possibly inexperienced (i still think noah is most likely a virgin, not at all a bad or unusual thing for a young gay boy! and finn might well be have never been with a boy either), i think that image prevails in fan consciousness. power to them for living their lives how they want! absolutely. but you can't deny that the byler kiss is going to be like a victorian woman lifting her skirts to reveal her ankles level of spice for many people. i mean, the byler kiss is going to be the first time we ever see noah's lips touch someone else's. its all just new and different to what we were used to when teen mags would show the big tv stars of the day like chad michael murray pashing a different romantic partner all the time.

in short its a kind of infantilisation of noah and finn in a way? like, damn, i cant believe we're going to see THEM in mature scenes!! and people cant handle it. you see it a lot with fandom language like 'that's my son' etc. personally if i were them i would be begging for a mature scene to flex my acting muscles and establish myself as a serious actor who can handle challenging content. noah mentioned his gratitude to the duffers for the trust they place in him with 'these scenes' - vague af, and i think its a loaded statement that means we're going to be seeing some stuff of a sexual nature, plus some dark violence and horror. basically, all the good stuff.

I really agree it's connected to infantilization for sure, and I genuinely do fight back when people say oh we watched them grow up though. Because everyone grows up, you can't deny someone's coming of age and all that goes with it, that foray into adulthood just because of that fact, it's a disservice to the reality of humanity. I also disagree that someone's own personal comfort levels need to be implemented upon the whole of society. And I think that's what a lot of people desire. No.

Really excited based on so much the actors themselves have expressed. "These scenes." NOAH! King of enticing vagueness. I'll be playing Will a little differently. The trust with these scenes. It would suck if he wasn't so great to work with. I agree with what you say is implied. The implications are implicating and I cannot calm down about it!

same anon help. hi 🫶 no they definitely blocked and directed that s4 scene in will’s bedroom perfectly but i meant an intentionally shot lighthearted scene that we can’t miss about mike noticing his butt OR like you said some kind of acknowledgment conversation! show us that boy is gay as hell yk 😭 too funny. and i mean. will having his own gay moment in the apocalypse if mike happens to show his arms or torso like how nancy stared at steve (an example don’t judge me!) or max with the binoculars when. we deserve harmless chaos as a treat

anyway. no, i get u. dustin has had a few moments throughout the series, lucas had his "mystery" item under his bed, el has had little joke moments n scenes where she acknowledges tht men are nice to look at or whatever, max had the binocular scene, and will had hosegate which wasn't funny/lighthearted but still counts. s5 is mike's turn, i'm sure! esp as this love triangle plot comes to a close and he'll generally be a bigger character again. if there were ever a time to be undeniably gay, it'd be then i hope.

guys i need help:

im planning on showing my friend a fic i wrote, except im switching out all the names so its not obvious that its a fanfiction (i said its just a novella i've been working on (still not finished tho))

anyways, i need an old timey somewhat victorian-esque name for a guy, which is going to replace mikes name (bc obviously i wrote a byler fanfic)
