Spite, Deeply Rooted
My colleague Charles had never really believed that back before I started working at the botanical garden, I’d been part of the team that invented the regenerating fluid we often used to revive plants. Originally, the fluid had been developed to restore species at the brink of extinction, especially those with specific properties advantageous to human health. As long as there was still a hint of life in them, we could save them—but whenever I referred to my university past, Charles probably assumed I’d made the coffee for the scientists, if anything at all.
I knew the value of my achievements, knew that the initial spark of the idea that led to the assembly of a team had been my own; I didn’t need Charles to acknowledge any of that. But even though I had nothing to prove to that guy, we did work together practically every day, and part of me wanted to be seen.
I could tell you that I was inspired by the sight of ripped leaves or brown spots in the greenhouse and simply wanted to help the plants, but what really motivated me to work on a new experiment was Charles’ condescension. I understand now that I took it too far: when I realised that the solution I sought lay in fusing animal material to plant matter, my easiest source of cells without a cell wall was my own human skin, which I was constantly shedding anyway, and therefore didn’t value as much as perhaps I should.
Not every experiment has the desired result; that’s why they’re experiments. Charles laughed at the monstrosity I’d grown amidst the giant water lilies, with its twisted claws and long human tongues. But this morning, when one of those wriggling tongues licked right across Charles’ face and left a trail of slimy latex and irritating hair, I was just as proud of this particular result as I’d been of the one that still continues to save lives.
[Image description: Photo of an abstract statue in tones of green, orange, and red, standing in the middle of a pond with lots of giant water lilies at the surface. Behind the statue there are more green plants, and above it is the metal construction of the greenhouse’s roof.]

The Victoria Beer Society invites you to join them for lagers and fresh hops, October 8th and 9th.
Nearly two years into the pandemic and many loyal imbibers have stuck with getting takeaway growlers and bottles, or masking up and retiring with a pint at their local. Obviously, it’s not lost that the global pandemic remains, but this hasn’t stopped the Victoria Beer Society from trying to inspire some normalcy with two events.
With one focusing on Autumn and another which requires patience and time, the VBS is pleased to announce two events, October 8th and 9th, at the 600 Block of David Street.
Lager Than Life, a celebration of lagers.

From the mouths of the organizers, here’s the backstory and the breakdown.
The Victoria Beer Society is proud to announce its first event since the onset of the pandemic: Lager Than Life on Friday, October 8th 2021 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Originally scheduled to take place as part of Victoria Beer Week last year, it was the first event cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Little did we know it would be postponed for more than 18 months!
Lagers have long been the outcast of the craft beer family, often overshadowed by trendier beers like their boastful IPA cousins. We think lagers have earned their place at the craft beer family table. The event will feature close to 20 lager-style beers from BC craft breweries.
To perfectly pair with these crisp brews, the Rock Bay Market’s Bird & Basket will be providing some delicious food options, featuring our special guest, Dumpling Drop.
With the event starting this Friday, October 8th, from 5:30pm - 8:30pm, the organizers invite you to purchase a ticket online, via victoriabeersociety.com, for $35+GST.
If this isn’t enough to get your interest, then consider the following breweries and their lagers, including.
Ace Brewing, Spitfire Lager
Barnside Brewing, Farmer’s Tap Lager
Cannery Brewing, Wildfire Dark Lager
Canoe Brewpub, Helles Lager Marzen
Category 12, Helles Munich Lager
Container Brewing, Noch Mal German Pilsner
Hoyne Brewing, Bier Garten Kolsch & Helios Dortmunder Lager
Longwood Brewery, Independent Pilsner
Moon Under Water Brewpub, Creepy Uncle Dunkel & HOJO Japanese Toasted Rice Lager
Twa Dogs Brewery, Dos Perros Light Lager & Keekin Glass Pilsner
Twin City Brewery, Postscript Munich Helles Lager & Dissimulator German Doppelbock
Vancouver Island Brewing, Hermannator Bock
Whistle Buoy Brewing, Cold Caller Cold IPA
Fresh to Death: Victoria’s Harvest Celebration of Fresh Hop Beers
Following Lager Than Life, the organizers return on Saturday, October 9th, from 2 pm to 5 pm, with Fresh to Death: Victoria’s Harvest Celebration of Fresh Hop Beers. At the 600 Block of David Street, look for some 20 beers showcasing the harvest.
Tumblr media

Again, here are the organizers.
They travel to hop farms all around the province to collect fresh hops that are still wet and juicy from the harvest. Then they race back to their breweries to brew a batch of beer with those hops. These special fresh hop (or wet hop) beers come out a few weeks later and are available for a short time at the beginning of autumn.
The Victoria Beer Society is proud to announce the return of Fresh to Death: Victoria’s Harvest Celebration of Fresh Hop Beers on Saturday, October 9th 2021 from 2 to 5pm.
The event will feature close to 20 beers from BC craft breweries, including fresh hop beers, as well as seasonal beers and Oktoberfest-style lagers, all celebrating the harvest season.
For craft beer connoisseurs, we have created a VIP ticket that includes an exclusive guided tasting of a selection of four fresh hop beers led by Rob Mangelsdorf, Certified Cicerone, and early access to the event. Rob will pick four beers that showcase different flavour profiles, and discuss what makes them special and unique. This VIP event begins at 1pm ahead of the start of the regular event at 2pm.
General Admission tickets are $35+GST or one jump ahead via a VIP Tasting & Early Admission at 1pm for $55+GST. Tickets can be purchased at victoriabeersociety.com.
If you’ve made it this far, we probably don’t need to share what you’ll be missing from this Saturday’s event. But if you need a small bite, then how does 33 Acres, Dageraad Brewing, and Whistle Buoy Brewing strike you?
For more information on this and other events, visit victoriabeersociety.com.

Nearly a decade in with the 9th annual pumpkin ale taste test. Looked high and low for a new BC-based pumpkin ale to no avail. So this year’s line-up was a repeat from tastings past.
1st Place and now five-time champ went to Howe Sound’s Pumpkineater Imperial Pumpkin Ale which remains the premier west coast pumpkin ale of choice.
2nd Place ended in a tie between past tasters Fernie Brewing Co’s Ghostrider Pumpkin Brown Ale (2018) and Phillip’s Brewing’s Crookeder Tooth Barrel Aged Pumpkin Ale (2020).
3rd Place saw another 2018 appearance from Parallel 49′s Lost Souls Chocolate Pumpkin Porter.
And 4th Place went to Longwood Brewery’s nearly undrinkable Full Patch Pumpkin Ale that also placed last in 2017.
Shoutout to Elysian Brewing with their Great Pumpkin Beer Festival and their Night Owl Pumpkin Ale that started this tradition for me when I tried it in Victoria in 2012.

Bruce Munro is an artist who plays mainly with lights in the site. Many of his artworks are not made from natural materials but visually have elements of organic structure.
‘Time and Again’, a work comprising 108 etched steel lilies afloat in the Chatsworth House Canal Pond.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The artwork follows Munro’s interest in the concept of time and is a personal reflection and appreciation that “time present“ is linked to a significant past and an as yet undefined future. Each lily is etched with the Morse code for C, the speed of light and the infinity symbol.   The work is also synonymous with the history of Giant Water Lily cultivation at Chatsworth House, lilies being a theme in Munro’s past works.
'Bloom', comprising seven circular arrays of multi colored fishing rods threaded with optical fiber, Munro creates seven large Blooms floating on the Scottsdale Canal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Each bloom resembles the shape of a giant blossoming flower that glimmers and reflects in sunlight and water during the day.  At night with optical fibres illuminated Blooms glow like giant bio – luminescent lily blossoms.
Munro’s use of fishing rods is a reverse reference to the protection of the White Amur fish that are imported by Salt River Project to inhabit and clean the canals.  In this way, the installation is intended to serve as a reminder of the eco-system within the canal itself.
'Waterlilies', Mixed media (used CD's, foam base)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Longwood Gardens, Pennsylvania, is famous for its skillfully cultivated Victoria amazonica lilies. These were the catalyst behind the creation of giant waterlilies made out of CDs in 2012—a material Munro worked with extensively in the CDSea installation.
'Fagin's Urchin'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fagin’s Urchins was created specifically for the formal Reflection Pool in the Martin Boxwood Gardens at Cheekwood. Of the creation of the piece Munro says “As often happens when I see a space, I had a very clear idea of what I wanted to create. The placing of the illuminated spheres close to the waterline creates the illusion of ten Lilliputian worlds at night”.
'Teepees', Mixed media (fluorescent light tubes, colour filters, electric fence energisers)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This piece cannot be experienced through photographs in the same way as it can in real time. The flashes of the fluorescent tubes happen so quickly that the eye doesn’t see the tepees lit all in a group, only the intermittent flashing tubes of light. But the camera lens captures the entire series of flashes so the lighted form of the whole installation is revealed.
And honourable mention as this piece has nothing to do with water BUT is all about the interaction of the landscape;
'Field of Light', Mixed media (optical fibre, glass, acrylic, light source)
Tumblr media
This is an art piece that has been shown across many different places and countries. Each time it is installed it interacts differently with it environment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 1992, journeying to Uluru through the Red Desert in central Australia, Munro felt a compelling connection to the energy, heat and brightness of the  desert landscape, which he recorded in his ever present sketchbooks. Field of Light is the embodiment of this experience.  Munro recalls “I wanted to create an illuminated field of stems that, like the dormant seed in a dry desert, would burst into bloom at dusk with gentle rhythms of light under a blazing blanket of stars”. Having developed the idea for over a decade the first Field of Light was created in the field behind his family home in Wiltshire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Munro returned to the very space that inspired him, to Uluru in 2016 for the installation of Field of Light:

PR WEEK 9- AFL Carlton draft legend draft
Carlton draft took the Initiative to help small footy clubs from around the state of Victoria by holding a draft with 8 past AFL legends this list includes Alex Rance, Eddie Betts, Dale Thomas, Shaun Burgoyne, Jarryd Roughead, Nathan Jones, Brendon Goddard and Cam Mooney this draft was held on Fox Footy and Jonathan Brown was the host for the event. It was run by the Carlton draft, so it did well in promoting their company by showing that they are helping small communities, some of the PR tools used was social media, use of ambassadors and press conferences that they hosted on fox footy, I heard of this PR from listening to Jonathan browns podcast, I believe this is great PR for the company's involved and can show how positive PR can help out not only business but also real people that need some help.
Here are the dates of the players playing and where at so you can get involved:
Alex Rance: May 14 at Campbells Creek Eddie Betts: May 22 at Branxholme Wallacedale Dale Thomas: June 4 at Nhill Tigers Shaun Burgoyne: June 11 at Dalyston Jarryd Roughead: June 18 at Gormandale Nathan Jones: July 9 at Portarlington Brendon Goddard: July 9 at North Wangaratta Cam Mooney: July 23 at Longwood

PR Week 7 - Carlton Draught's 'Carlton Draft' brings Former AFL Stars to Community Footy
Australian beer company Carlton Draught has launched a competition event for local Australian sports leagues centred around eight retired AFL superstars lacing up the boots again for community teams around the state of Victoria.
Tumblr media
Former players Eddie Betts, Jarryd Roughhead, Cameron Mooney, Brendan Goddard, Dale Thomas, Nathan Jones, Alex Rance and Shaun Burgoyne have announced periodically for 8 weeks via Carlton Draught's official social media and personal accounts their entry into the draft, whilst entries opened for regional clubs to be nominated for the televised draft.
The draft was broadcasted on the Fox sports channel Fox Footy with sports personality and another AFL great Jonathan Brown, who also served as the ambassador for the campaign. Brown and Fox Footy commentator Ben Dixon hosted the draft at a Melbourne pub.
Nominated for the draft were Campbell's creek, Nhill, North Wangaratta, Portarlighton, Dalyston, Branxholme Wallacedale, Longwood and Gormandale football clubs each in a draft format selecting one AFL legend to play for their side and Fox Footy recording footage from the day.
youtube
Advertisement and promotion for the draft were done on FOX channels and through Carlton Draught with Brown, Betts, Jones, Roughhead and Thomas to show off the star players and gain better viewership for the Carlton Draft.
In Carlton Draught's release, they wanted to give back to community football following the pandemic not allowing any games to go ahead by providing clubs with these former professional athletes to bring some attention and perhaps boost performance to these struggling clubs. Commissioner Jonathon Brown says it "will be a campaign that unifies communities across Victoria."
I believe this to be an effective campaign as the sport begins to come back into its own around the country and support community football which had it hard during and after COVID. Although not the concern of Carlton Draught, this provides a significant morale boost between the AFL and community football publicly. As for Carlton Draught, this campaign helps continue their relationship with FOX Footy and the AFL as Carlton Draught remains a major partner of both. This will help with the future collaborations that occur between either organisations.
