Crimson Flowered Fava is an English heirloom broad bean that was first documented in 1778 and then saved from near extinction exactly 200 years later when Rhoda Catbush shared her last four seeds with the Henry Doubleday Research Association and eventually a fleet of volunteer growers. Crossing fingers we will have enough seed harvest this year to share through Truelove Seeds! #crimsonflowered #crimsonfloweredbroadbean #crimsonfloweringbroadbeans #crimsonfloweringfava #heirloomfavas #viciafaba #seedkeeping https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx0wKCQFiTQ/?igshid=eq2r6luv34em

Mano pupas (#Vicia faba) '#Wizard' kamuoja pora bėdų.
Pradėjo pulti juodieji pupiniai #amarai (#Aphis fabae).

Thinking through the math of seed increase...I planted 385 Crimson Flowering Fava seeds, which germinated great, if late, and grew and flowered beautifully, but did not set many pods. On this upper tray, you see exactly twice the original seed (770) and then smaller, probably less viable seeds on the lower tray. Not a very impressive increase. The largest pile nearest the barn window is 400 seeds, which is the minimum amount I'd need to send to the labs for germination testing. Next winter, it seems I'd need to plant at least all of my good seed from this year to get at least 400 seeds to share next year after I set aside my stock seed and my germ test seed. BUT maybe the plants will be much more productive as they adapt more to my field (they came from England last year, where they are an important heirloom). Anyways...I hope I can share these tasty beauties soon! But they won't be in the catalogue for 2018. #crimsonfloweredbroadbean #crimsonfloweredfava #fava #viciafaba #seedincrease (at Delaware County, Pennsylvania)

Crimson Flowering Fava (Vicia faba) just past its prime, from above. If only you could scratch and sniff this photo - it smells so sweet that I was tempted to eat every flower on the spot. This is the English heirloom broad bean I posted about a few weeks ago that was first documented in 1778 and then saved from near extinction exactly 200 years later when Rhoda Catbush shared her last four seeds with the Henry Doubleday Research Association and eventually a fleet of volunteer growers. #crimsonfloweringbroadbeans #crimsonfloweredfava #crimsonflower #viciafaba #favabeans #broadbeans #seedkeeping #edibleflowers #scratchandsniff (at Newtown Square, Pennsylvania)

Rhoda Catbush had four remaining seeds of Crimson Flowering Broad Bean in 1978, exactly two hundred years after it was first documented in Mawe and Abercrombie's "Every Man His Own Gardener". She'd been growing the gorgeous variety for many years, just as her father had since before World War One. She lost her crop that year and gave the last four seeds to the Henry Doubleday Research Association who helped revive the English heirloom with the help of volunteer growers. I know this plant from my time with William Woys Weaver and his Roughwood Seed Collection. We never got enough to eat, but this year I ordered seeds from England and hope to both eat this beauty, and have seed to share. I've already tried the flowers and leaves and they are tasty! #crimsonfloweredbroadbean #crimsonfloweringfava #crimsonfloweredfava #crimsonfloweringbroadbeans #viciafaba #fava #broadbean #favaflowers #favabeans #catbush #henrydoubleday #henrydoubledayresearchassociation #seedsaving #seedkeeping (at Newtown Square, Pennsylvania)

I ordered and planted 400 Crimson Flowering Fava Beans and one is albino. It would make a very striking plant when flowering! But I'm not sure it has enough chlorophyll to make the sun-food it needs to make it that far. Fingers crossed! #crimsonfloweredbroadbean #crimsonfloweredfava #viciafaba #favabeans #albinoplant (at Newtown Square, Pennsylvania)

A map of the world, etched reverently on a Fava Bean seed by artist Sergey Jivetin (@sjivetin) to represent the movement of people and our seeds as we disperse through the world. Diaspora: the dispersal.
I visited the Philadelphia #flowershow today to see my dear friend Ken Greene (@seedlibrary) at his booth (it’s my first time in 5 years not working at the booth with @hudsonvalleyseedco - your seed orders are keeping me busy!)
Ken strongly encouraged me to get a seed etched at their #artofseed exhibit. I told artist Sergey about Truelove Seeds and our focus on working with farmers to grow their ancestral crops, and my particular focus on Irish and Italian varieties. He showed me his seeds, and I chose this “Peruvian” Fava because fava is the “Old World” bean, which my families in Ireland, Britain, and Italy would certainly have relied on as a nutritious staple long before the beans most of us know and love today, which are mostly indigenous to the Americas. Favas were domesticated in the Mediterranean and the Middle East around 6000 BC and no known wild Fava ancestor is alive today.
When Sergey suggested an old fashioned map for the image, I agreed immediately, as it truly represents the ways our seed and our food ties us to home through taste and through body memory, even when we have traveled half the world over. Our seeds tell stories of how we have survived, thrived, gained, lost, colonized, been colonized, resisted, stayed resilient, remembered, forgotten, and remembered again.
