Book One: Tao Te Ching
Pinanghawakan ko ang Hotdog ko.
Wait, parang ang sagwa pakinggan.
Pinanghawakan ko ang pagiging Hotdog ko.
Puwede na. Okay.
I was in Grade Two when everyone officially named me Hotdog. I still write my Carlisle Arjeantine name kapag kailangang isulat, but nickname? Hotdog talaga.
I was Hotdog Mendoza way back then. To be honest, hindi siya weird na nickname, because I had a classmate, and she was named as Kukay. I found Hotdog a bit presentable than Kukay during those days.
I was enjoying being Hotdog in an empirical manner when I realized, there was nothing special about being Hotdog.
First Year High School, ang random ng thought, everyone knew me as Hotdog while some called me Arjan. My mom used to call me Cali, and it was confusing me in another level kasi hindi ko alam kung ano ang dapat itawag sa akin.
You had a freaking name, and it was legally applied, and no one wants to use it for you, even yourself.
Same kay Kukay. Ang real name niya, Angelica Marie Joy R. San Vicente. But no one called her Angelica or Marie or Joy, or any of it but Kukay. Like, dude, for real?
Symbolic for me ang nickname na Hotdog kasi sobrang rare kong kumain ng hotdog kahit noong bata pa ’ko. Laging cheesedog. So, I asked my dad some time when I was six, “Pops, bakit may ganito na white sa hotdog?”
It was a white, gewy substance, dripping at the tip of the hotdog. And damn, it sounded so not safe for work, but it was.
“Cheesedog naman kasi ’yan, hindi ’yan hotdog,” sagot ni Popsky.
“Bakit po may cheese?”
“Kasi special kapag may cheese. Kapag, wala, common hotdog lang siya.”
Intrusion! Intrusion!
But yes, it was a sudden flashback during my childhood days na kapag may cheese, special.
Ang bibingkang may cheese, special.
Ang ensaymadang may cheese, special.
Ang putong may cheese, special.
Ang burger na may cheese, special.
There might be something about cheese that makes everything so special.
“Kaya pumayag kang maging Cheesedog?”
Ah! My mind was wandering around, kausap ko nga pala si Jazmin pero Z.
“Cheesedog is a good source of discussion, anyway,” sagot ko.
Jazmin pero Z is my student. Humanities class.
Well, she’s . . . she’s interesting. Very . . . interesting in a sense that she found me in a place where no one wants to look for me.
There’s something about the timing na hindi ko ine-expect. There’s something about the idea na ang sarap i-look forward because someone found you where you’ve been.
She’s cute. I like her eyes. Madaldal.
“Because I want you, guys, to understand that book?”
“Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu,” pagbasa niya sa librong pinababasa ko sa buong klase for a reflection paper. “The Book of Way.”
Her name is Cherminne. I was nineteen when I first found this.”
Ako pa ang nagbuklat ng page at ipinakita ang bookmark ko roon sa page na may memorable line for me.
“We wu wei,” nakangiting sabi ko. “When nothing is done, nothing is left undone. Kung wala kang ginawa, meron kang ginawa. Wala nga lang.”
Napapangiti siyang nagtakip ng noo at parang nahihiya sa sinabi ko, umiiling pa. “Puwede bang bumalik na lang tayo kung bakit ka naging si Cheesedog, sir?”
It was fascinating, for me. Si Ate Cherminne kasi, virtual assistant siya. Sobrang broad ng pagiging VA, and I was a student way back then. She has an expressive eyes, and she looked at me like she was reading me until the very fiber of my existence.
And nineteen years old wasn’t that old enough to know something about life in general. And she’s double my age.
Ate Cherminne and I were on the same table, and she was reading that book habang naghihintay ako sa kanya. We had a small talk, some questions about life, as in sobrang random na hindi naman normally pinag-uusapan ng dalawang taong hindi rin naman magkakilala.
She asked, “Tingin mo, simple lang ang buhay?”
I answered, “Yes po.”
She smiled at me. “Why?”
“Simple lang ang life because it’s more of living and knowing why you live?” hindi sure na sagot ko.
“If simple lang, bakit mahirap maging masaya?”
“Hmm.” I really thought about that part. “Subjective po siguro ang happiness. Siguro nakadepende ’yon sa source of happiness nila kaya mahirap.”
“So, dahil ba sa constant craving nila for something they do not have, kaya mahirap maging masaya?”
“Kung happiness po ng ibang tao ang magkaroon ng maraming pera pero tambay lang po sila, mahirap po talaga. O kaya kung gusto nila ng T-Rex.”
Tinawanan lang ako ni Ate Cherminne sa sagot ko.
But really, isa ’yon sa mga tanong sa mundo na madali sanang sagutin kung pare-pareho lang ang meaning ng happiness para sa lahat.
Maybe it was about that constant craving gaya ng sabi ni Ate Cherminne, or maybe it was about the contentment na kung enough for you ang kung anong meron ka, you’ll feel happy kasi satisfied ka na. You don’t have to crave for more, you don’t have to ask for anything else.
Maybe it was about perspective, depende kung saang side ka tumitingin.
“When people see some things as beautiful, other things become ugly. When people see some things as good, other things become bad,” pagbasa ni Jazmin sa isang page ng book. “Ang philosophical nitong book, parang nakakabobo basahin, sir. Parang gets ko na parang hindi.”
“Pero ikaw, ano ang definition mo ng happiness?” usisa ko habang tinititigan siya.
“Hmm. Quiz ba ’to? May score ba ’to, sir? Exempted na ba ’ko kapag sinagot ko?”
Tinuktukan ko siya ng sign pen sa ulo bago ko binalikan ang lesson plan ko. “Magbasa ka na lang.”
“Ang definition ko ng happiness, sir, kapag busog ako, hahaha!” biglang sabi niya kaya napasulyap ako. Hawak-hawak na naman niya ang bookmark na iniwan ko roon. “Cheesedog Was Here.”
“Ibalik mo ’yan, ha?” utos ko.
“Opo, ito na po, ibabalik na.” Isinilid niya ulit ang bookmark sa page ng libro. “May favorite quote ka rito sa book, sir?”
“Meron,” sagot ko, sinusundan ng tingin ang ginagawa niyang paglipat sa libro.
“Natatandaan mo pa?”
“Yeah. I am different from ordinary people.”
Bigla siyang tumawa sa ’kin. “Ang GGSS! Legit ba?”
Ako naman ang napangiti sa kanya. “Joke lang, ang bilis mong maniwala.”
“Kaya ko nga tinanong kung legit ba. Grabe siya, ha. Pero seryoso, natatandaan mo pa?”
“Yep!” Tumango naman ako. “If you want to become whole, let yourself be partial. If you want to become full, let yourself be empty. If you want to be reborn, let yourself die. More like if you want to be one, become one.”
“Sir, hindi na makatao subject mo. Nakakabobo na, ha. Hindi pa nga ako nakaka-recover sa I exist; therefore, I am mo. Sumisingit ka pa ng nakakasira ng utak.”
“Mag-aral ka kasing mabuti.”
“Business naman kasi kinukuha ko, sir, hindi naman philo. Uy, meron pang isang bookmark. Taray!”
Dinampot niya agad ’yon, pero kaiba sa bookmark ko, pilas lang ’yon ng papel na sinulatan.
“Every moment that passes by is a new piece of time, a new chance to make things right as they were before, a new start to do good as it was written for us long ago. Every life has an opportunity to change its ways if it wants to be happy again,” pagbasa niya roon. “Buti pa ’to mabilis arukin. Wala ka bang ganito, sir? Kaysa yung one plus one mo.”
“Hahaha! Magbasa ka na. Ikaw una kong tatawagin bukas sa recitation.”
“Hoy! Namemersonal ka na!”
“Hahaha!”
Life is composed of simple things that make us happy. A simple joke, the laughter of a cute kid, a short conversation with someone you adore, a cute toy. And I guess it wasn’t complicated at all. We just have to look at it as something worth its existence.

Leo Valdez Headcannons because I'm mexican and he is mexican and this has been stuck in my head for a while now.
He doesn't swear a lot in English, but when he speaks in Spanish, he swears in every sentence.
He sings Vicente Fernandez songs when he is working in the Argo ll.
At some point, he threatens every monster and/or member of the Argo ll with a chancla.
In movie night, the crew decides to watch Coco and Leo has to explain a lot of things to the others like, a translation for a few words in Spanish, what is an alebrije, why Xoloesquincles are important, the importance of the flowers in the floor, etcetera. He is not mad or annoyed, he really likes to share his culture.
He has definitely called Jason a 'gringo', 'güerito', 'patrón', etcetera.
When he is walking with a woman on the street, he never lets them walk from the side of the street. In Mexico, when a guy and a girl walk together, it is considered rude if the girl walks in the side of the street because that means that the guy is selling her or doesn't respect her. (This is still done, at least in my family. My father never lets me walk on that side when I'm with him).
One day he is walking with Piper and she is at the side of the street. Leo doesn't want to complain, so he doesn't say anything, but a few seconds later, he interrupts Piper's story, grabs her by the shoulders and changes sides with her. He tries to continue walking as if nothing has happened but she asks him what was that about. Leo explains it and Piper is very surprised and a little bit touched.
Walks around the house/ship with shoes on (or at least socks) because "If my mother were to see me walking without shoes, I would not be here today". This drives Frank crazy. Reyna agrees.
Once things cool down with Reyna, they speak Spanish when they have a conversation. Reyna does have to talk slower and roll her r's more so that Leo can understand. They also have to explain a lot of words and expressions that only exist in Mexico or Puerto Rico.
They also share food, mostly candy. Reyna is freaking tired that everything has Chile and "this are supposed to be sweets, why are they spicy?! ... wHAT ARE YOU DOING?! WHY WOULD YOU PUT SALSA OVER SOMETHING THAT IS ALREADY SPICY?! WHA-?!
Has definitely has called people pendejo/a (dumbass), imbécil, idiota (idiot), cabrón, hijo de tu puta madre (son of a bitch) etc, and when they ask what does that mean he just says "it means friend". (This obviously is not for Annabeth, 'cause he would never swear at her, she is scary and doesn't want to die, Hazel, because she is the most badass cinnamon roll ever and Frank, because... I don't know).
He also calls everyone "wey" (the mexican equivalent of dude) and no one knows who is he talking to.
When he forgets a word in English, he just repeats 'the... The... The... The thingie for the thing that is on top is the thing... ¡Esa madre! What's it called?
Somehow, Piper is the only one that knows what he wants to say.
At this point, Piper knows a lot of Spanish, only from hearing Leo rant.
Leo sometimes calls the Gods for their names in Spanish, like Hefesto, Afrodita, Atenea, Poseidón, just for fun.
I like to think that his family was very religious and his mother had to fill the house with crosses, which made the news about him being a half-blood very awkward.
He might be a child of Hefestus, but when something is broken, he hits it first, then tries to fix it with tape. If it doesn't work, then it's a serious problem.
Nyssa and him have defenitly ranted in spanish.
He can quote telenovelas by heart.

"I can't explain myself, I'm afraid, sir," said Alice, "Because I'm not myself, you see." Reading had always been Isabella's favorite past time. There was something so comforting in getting lost within the pages of a good book. She could spend hours upon hours submerging herself in the eventful life of the characters in her favorite books. Right now, she just wanted to step away from her life and forget where she was. "I get you, Alice." Sighing, Isabella folded a tiny corner of the paperback book so she could return to that place when she had another chance to continue reading Alice's adventures. She was walking down the quiet corridor that led back to her private room with fifteen minutes to spare until her scheduled session with Dr. Thredson. It was important to keep a consistent routine, which wasn't hard when you couldn't leave the premises and had eyes watching your every move. As she entered the room, there was a bright pop of color that filled the dull white walls with life. A bouquet of white and yellow roses sat on the table beside the window allowing the sun to hit them perfectly, making them shine with its light. Isabella had been taken aback there were but a handful of people that knew specifically what type of flowers she loved and by the process of elimination she concluded they had to come from papa. Finding the small note settled visibly between the petals of the roses she smiled, flipping the white card to see, “Go wisely and slowly. Those who rush stumble and fall.” The Shakespearean quote had been written in a familiar cursive that did not belong to her father. Cruz. The name rang through her mind as she tried to gather her thoughts, knowing this was code for something. Why didn't she take him seriously when he mentioned that code would come in handy when they needed to relay an important message? "Que pedo? You're basically in prison, and you still get flowers?" Her train of thought had been interrupted by a voice she felt had been forever since the last time they had been together. For a moment, she thought her mind was playing tricks on her, and once she turned, he wasn't going to be there. She was wrong. Vicente stood by the door with hands in his pocket, almost as if he was waiting for permission to enter the room. "Que diablos haces aqui?! I had left strict instructions that I would not have any visitors." It was taking everything within her to stop herself from running into his arms and find some comfort in his embrace, but she didn't deserve that. "Bajale, and sit your ass down." "How did you know I was here?" With a roll of her eyes, Isabella had moved across the room to a sofa that was pushed up against the corner of the room with a single chair resting opposite of it, which he dragged closer to where she sat. "I got back from San Marcos as soon as I heard. Yo cuido a mis amigos, this shouldn't be news to you. Pero que pedo Monroe?" "You made your way all the way here from San Marcos? Why would you do that? Haven't you heard? I have issues. Whatever. I'm getting help now, blah blah."
"Ya estuvo bueno with your little attitude. I'm here to get all the facts I want to know what happened from you, not any other person who knows nothing about the person you are. Asi que o me dices que onda, or I'm walking out that door." He took a deep breath trying to keep his cool while Isabella's hazel hues moved from him to the roses a distance away. Why was it so hard for her to accept the fact that he was here wanting to hear her out and figure this all out together? Isabella felt guilty for putting this on him or anyone else that would go out of their way just to try to understand her destructive actions. If not now, they will eventually come to see that anything she touches, anything that comes too close to her, ends up disappointed.
"I'm not a victim." Her words were colder than she intended them to be. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see him shaking his head, almost as if she had hit him across the face. Vicente was in the FBI, and she knew that his intentions meant well, but she couldn't let him waste his time on her; the princess had brought this on herself. He had suddenly gotten up almost the chair sliding across the floor until it met the wall with a soft thud. This caused her to jump, the male who was pacing until he found himself at the door again. Something caught Isabella's attentions within the small opening that the petals allowed. She instantly knew what Cruz was trying to get to her with his message. Casually, she reached the bouquet once more and casually moved her fingers along the yellows and whites until she plucked one out of its place taking the small USB with it. She knew that there was no way she would be able to look at this without ringing alarms from those who were keeping an eye on her. All she knew was that it had to be important, and whatever it may contain, she could trust the one and only person who had bothered to see her. "Que esperas? Vete!" Her steps grew closer to him her fingers twirled the flower while the small USB hid within her palm. When she was finally in front of him, she pushed at his chest wanting to get him out of the room. After a couple of times, the flower fell to the floor and the USB slipped into the small pocket of his shirt as she rested her hands atop his chest. She hoped she hasn't done too much damage to this friendship. She hoped he'd understand. "Estas wey si piensas que no voy a regresar." One of his hands made its way to the back of her neck, bringing her closer to him as he places a soft kiss to her forehead. As he walked down the hall, she wrapped her arms around her small frame a single thought repeating over and over again. "Please notice."
