burr pt.2 electric boogaloo (this joke is only funny to me)
its politics time, because Burr had a really fucking long political career and i get tired just reading about it. (also here's pt. 1)
Washington and Adams Administrations
Burr said he found politics "a great deal of fun" so he entered the 1792 gubernatorial race in NY, but withdrew bc Daddy Clinton told him to. He was supported by Northern republicans, but was distrusted by Southerners (wonder why). According to James Monroe, my detested, it was better to select "a person of more advanced life and longer standing in publick trust, particularly one who in consequence of such service had given unequivocal proofs of what his principles really were." Now, you may be thinking that he must be talking about Jefferson, but this is Monroe, and he was probably just kissing his own ass, as per usual.
Burr sided with anti-administration forces who opposed Hamilton's financial plan and Washington's foreign policy. Burr also defended Albert Gallatin who was unseated in 1794 after Federalists determined he did not meet the 9 year citizenship requirement.
Burr voted against Washington's nomination of John Jay as envoy to Britain in 1794, and was one of the most outspoken opponents of the Jay treaty.
Burr set his sights on the presidency with an energetic campaign in the 1796 election, and Republicans endorsed him as their second choice (ie vice-president canidate), but it was still a little divisive. Most, if not all, Democratic-Republicans voted for Thomas Jefferson, and only half of his voters also voted for Burr. Burr finished fourth with 30 electoral votes.
Burr retired from the Senate in 1797, and returned to the New York Assembly in 1798, making several enemies during his brief term. As relations with France got heated over the XYZ affair, Burr advocated for defensive measures to protect New York harbor. This was reasonable since New York was very strategically important, but it's location made it vulnerable to a naval attack. This prompted accusations that Burr had switched parties to the Federalist side, and that he abused public trust for personal benefit, a common theme in rumors about him. Allegedly, he participated in private land speculation ventures in NY and sought to enact legislation removing restrictions on land ownership by non-citizens, which would increase the value of western lands. Basically, they thought he was trying to influence legislation so he could make money.
Hammy boy is back and this time he is working together with Burr. Burr and Hamilton secured a charter and raised subscriptions for a private company to improve the water supply of Manhattan. These were two incredibly intelligent and creative men, and that is greatly reflected in their choice for the company's name, The Manhattan Water Company (/sarcasm). Turns out, the extra money from this was used to establish the Bank of Manhattan, which was controlled by Republicans. Pretend to be shocked even though both of them lived on Wall Street.
Some weird shit went down with the Republican voters in New York in the 1799 election, and Burr was turned out of office. People were really suspicious of him, but he remained a vital asset.
Burr opposed the Alien and Sedition Acts, which won him Demo-Republican support, especially in New York which had a large immigrant population. This ensured that NYC elected a Republican delegation to the state legislature in 1800.
Election of 1800
Republicans wanted a New Yorker for their 2nd presidential choice (im saying this instead of vice presidential candidate and you'll see why). Clinton refused, so Burr was the next option. He was nominated on May 11, 1800. Jefferson claimed he harbored reservations of Burr, but he was acting all nice to him to ensure Republican victory. Jefferson was also very busy with his behind-the-scenes campaign, writing letters and encouraging press support that was critical of the Adams Administration. This is when he called him a hermaphrodite btw.
Burr had a far more active campaign technique. He visited Rhode Island and Connecticut in late August to secure Republican support. Burr's political prowess during 1800 raised suspicion among enemies and supporters. He didn't fit the stoic, unattached statesman who just let his supporters run the campaign for him. Burr campaigned more like a modern politician.
It was generally expected that each elector would cast one vote for Jefferson, one for Burr. Each elector had two votes, and they didn't distinguish who they wanted for president, and who they wanted for vice president. Whoever came in second would be VP, so the party would generally determine who they would advocate the most, and who they would advocate the second most. Basically they were like "this guy is great! this guy is also pretty good. also we HATE those guys (other party's nominees)" So, they really just hoped that Jefferson would get the most, and Burr would get second.
...but, uh, by mid-December, Republicans still didn't have a president in office. They definitely defeated the Federalists, because Adams and Jay had like. no votes. But Jefferson and Burr both had 73 votes, and were at a stalemate, which meant that the vote would be taken to the House of Representatives.
Federalists JUMPED on this opportunity, specifically Hamilton, who had already doomed Adams to lose the election. Some Federalists believed that Burr was more flexible and less partisan, and would be more likely to approve Federalist legislation. Other Federalists who supported Burr hoped that if the two parties were deadlocked for too long, Federalist-leaning Congress would resolve the impasse with legislation authorizing the Senate to elect a Federalist president. This is stupid and idk why people thought this was possible.
Hamilton launched into his smear campaign of Burr. He advised other Federalists not to trust Burr in very simple words, but in the background he was spreading awful rumors about Burr, which was pretty usual. The only difference from how he attacked Burr vs how he attacked Adams is that he didn't publish anything about Burr, but he would have.
The House of Representatives announced Jefferson was the winner on February 17, 1801. Burr made only a few comments and they were guarded, evasive, and contradictory. He seemed particularly angry that there were rumors that he was soliciting Federalist support in an attempt to steal the presidency, which he didn't do, but he happily accepted any Federalist votes.
"...take no step whatsoever, by which the choice of the House of Representatives can be impeded or embarrassed, [instead] keep the game perfectly in Your own hand." -advice from Federalist Robert Goodloe Harber against withdrawing from the election that Burr followed
Jefferson Administration
Burr was inaugurated as VP on March 4, 1804 by James Hillhouse in the Senate Chamber of the new capitol. He gave a brief address of "about 3 sentences" which was overshadowed by Jefferson's speech.
He immediately received a shit ton of letters from associates seeking appointments and demanding removal of Federalists. He handed these off to Jefferson, who removed the "midnight appointments" from the Adams Administration.
In fall of 1801, Burr campaigned for a naval position for Matthew L. Davis, and it was around this time that Jefferson began to distance himself from Burr. Davis' appointment was reliant on Clinton and De Witt for a NY appointment. De Witt talked mad shit about Burr, and Burr was so upset that he talked in the third person about it (he did this a lot).
"The handbills were numerous, of various descriptions, uniform however in Virulent and indecent abuse. [T]o Vilify A.B. was deemed of so much consequence that packages of them were sent to various parts of the country." -Burr
Burr lost like. all political relevance except for being VP. I mean, people still respected him because he wasn't bad at his job, but they were incredibly suspicious of his Federalist friendships, alienation from Republicans, and his now infamous opportunism.
On January 27, 1802. Burr cast a tie-breaking vote that undercut Republican effort to repeal the Judiciary Act of 1801, which provided reforms to the Supreme Court which allowed for a potentially Federalist controlled judiciary (shout out John Marshall). Burr voted for Republican repeal, and secretly informed Federalists he would add amendments to make it acceptable to moderate Republicans. He resolved the tie in favor of Federalists.
"I am for the affirmative, because I can never resist the reference of a measure where the Senate is so nicely balanced, when the object is to effect amendment, that may accommodate it to the opinions of a larger majority; & particularly when I can believe that gentlemen are sincere in wishing a reference for this purpose. Should it, however, at any time appear that delay only is intended, my conduct will be different." -Burr (apparently in 2020 I didn't think it was important to have dates for my quotes.)
After Burr announced a select committee consisting of 2 Republicans, 2 Federalists, and 1 moderate, The New York Evening Post wrote, "The Vice President was very deliberate. He took ballots of the respective Senators, examined them attentively, state the number of them, & holding them up in his hand, mentioned that gentlemen, if they chose, might come and examine them. Mr. G[ouverneur] Morris hoped never to see, in the Senate, a proceeding implying so much distrust." And i'd love to tell you what political party the Evening Post was associated with, but I didn't know how to take notes in 2020, and I'm losing my mind just a little.
Burr continued to be estranged from his own party, possibly to form his own, but no one really liked him so, tough luck. Burr contacted Jefferson, saying that he thought it was best for him to retire for the sake of the party, and wanted Jefferson to publicly give him his confidence. Jefferson said he had no influence in the last election, but he would in the next, which is weird and foreboding but aight. Jefferson didn't trust Burr because he was pissy that Burr warned Madison not to trust people (ie Jefferson) too much.
Burr retired without Jefferson's "mark of favor", and was replaced as VP by Clinton. After leaving the vice-presidency, he entered the NY gubernatorial race to have some kind of a job, since he was majorly in debt.
*wipes sweat dramatically* okay so i think i'll have 1-2 more Burr posts, and then we're onto Lafayette, which is going to be significantly more extensive because I've read two full books about him, and taken notes on him. and THEN i have to do Hamilton which will be. even more extensive. but we got this. okay bye see you in the next one

If I win Student Council Vice President, I'm giving everyone a tour of my world, if I can figure out how to get back there.
-Pidove living in the vents, Student Council Vice President canidate
You cannot run for Vice President directly. You run for President, and then the runner up becomes the Vice President from there.
I also would like to point out that typically only those who are students at Blueberry Academy may run for Council. However, I see that a special exception has been granted on your application. I wish you the best of luck in your campaign.
//ooc the rule is technically that you need to be a student but like what? I'm gonna say no to the pidove? I'm not a monster. And also birds living in the vents are basically BBA culture at this point.
Also to expand/remind everyone re Presidential candidates, Amarys is pre-destined to win this one (because I'm not putting all this work into building a council just to lose it) (and also it's a canon character trait for her). So while it is IC a campaign to be president, OOC whoever 'wins' will be given Vice President.
So far the presidential candidates are Amarys, Tsumaranai, and this bird. I genuinely really like the idea of both Tsumaranai and The Bird being vice pres. Y'all are killing it with these candidates, I'm loving it.

so as you may know, the philippines is not in a good place right now. vice president, leni robredo, lost the elections for president. bongbong marcos, mainly known as “bbm” won. his family, the marcoses have made the 70′s-80′s hell for our older relatives. bbm’s the same guy that didnt work for 6 years and was called out as “lazy” by his own sister. one of his canidates, sara duterte, wants mandatory military service for all 18 year olds no matter the gender. as you can see, they’re harming the lives of the people. + bbm mostly bribed his way into getting votes and might have cheated. please try as best as you can to help us here. im terrified on what will happen to my future, to the other people’s futures. our futures are in danger.

So my bf and i were talking about hypotheticals this election season and we collectively lost our shit. Lemme explain-
In the event, lord help us, that the votes are finally all counted and neither president was able to get all 270 electorals, which is only possible if biden doesn't win arizona (which people are counting as a win) but did win georgia, and trump won the rest thats left(which doesnt look possible rn) BUT it is technically possible, and the constitution DOES account for it so bare with me here-
What would happen, is the house would vote on the top three canidates, they should technically choose the one with most popular votes. Then the other two canidates not chosen for pres......go to the senate.......to be voted on......for vice president(no they dont get to keep their vp's which is a weird last resort solution). So remember kids, we are in a dark timeline, but not as dark as the one right next to us where Biden is president and donald Fucking trump is the Vice president....
#i started scREAMING at the thought of donald trump being the sitting VP ON GOD#bc he wouldnt get the fame of being president#still has to do the shitty job#while being humiliated bc he lost and forced to watch everything he ever did being reversed right in front of him#he doesnt even get to walk away with his orange tail between his legs#its the equivalent of prisoners hog-tying the warden forcing him to watch the shitty prison he built getting burned to the fucking ground#and its beautiful#donald trump#joe biden#2020 election*#2020 election#us politics#president#vice president

Patriot Award Recipient/Former Presidental canidate Herman Cain attends the 2015 Helping A Hero Gala on Nov. 22, 2015 in Houston, Texas. (Rick Diamond/Getty Images for Helping A Hero)By Linda J. Hansen | Monday, 03 August 2020 10:33 AM
Hansen: Honoring Herman Cain
Herman Cain was one of the finest men I have ever known. If anyone has ever wondered what Herman Cain was like, I could sum it up in three words: the real deal. He was honest, authentic, and loyal. He was deeply committed to Jesus Christ, his family, and his country— in that order, and everything he did revolved around those priorities.
Our shared faith and love of country brought an instant bond, and from our first meeting I knew this man was going to have an incredible impact on my life, and I would potentially have an impact on his, although I had no idea at that time just how true those words would become.
I met him a few years before he ran for president through my involvement in grassroots politics. We spoke at various political events together and he became an adviser and contributing author to a program I developed called Prosperity 101™, which I created to help employers educate employees about the public policy issues that affect their jobs.
He believed in my vision and supported my efforts wholeheartedly.
We did workshops and speaking engagements together and it was during those times of meeting with people around the country that I could see our nation was crying out for the leadership of Herman Cain.
Our mutual friend and colleague, Mark Block, had also worked with Mr. Cain over several years and he believed, as I did, that America wanted a business leader in the White House. Block and I put together a strategy and took it to Cain, encouraging him to run for president and assuring him that we could take him to number one in the polls.
Of course, he said we were "crazy," but he had that signature twinkle in his eyes and that enormous grin, and I knew he was intrigued.
I told him that 'Yes," we were "crazy," but I promised we could take him to number one!
To this day, I feel so blessed to be one of two people who recruited him to run for president and then to serve as the executive vice president and deputy chief of staff for his presidential campaign, a role that not many women in America had done at that time.
He did not care that I was a woman. He trusted my work.
Herman Cain was a man who sought results, and to work so closely with him taught me more than I could have ever learned in a classroom or from any other candidate.
We strategized together, laughed together, and prayed together. Some of my favorite memories involved flying with just him and Block during the campaign.
We had great strategy sessions at 35,000 feet!
His presidential campaign announcement rally, held on May 21, 2011, was at that time, the largest political rally in the history of our country. Much of the media ignored it, yet as over 15,000 people traveled from all over our country to support this non-politician businessman who was running for president, we knew we were experiencing history in the making.
The atmosphere was electric. I still get chills when I think of it.
While establishment politicians and many media pundits ridiculed us, we diligently kept building a grassroots army that became a movement. Many people had no idea how organized we were at the grassroots level, despite no paid advertising and a limited budget.
Our signature "9-9-9" tax plan became wildly popular, and a greeting to supporters from Chief of Staff Block, that included the famous puff on a cigarette, became a viral sensation. Poll numbers soared.
As he rose in the polls, the unfounded, vicious attacks began.
While there was no proof, it damaged the campaign.
As a businessman, he knew the odds were not in our favor. He wanted to make sure everyone on the team could be paid through the end of year, so he made a business decision to end the campaign while there was still money to do so.
Additionally, he wanted to protect his precious wife, Gloria, and their family from additional stress. Being part of the conversations that led to that decision and seeing the love and tender relationship that he and Gloria exhibited during the crisis only caused my respect for him to grow.
We have worked together on many things since then. In fact, I am blessed to have interviewed him for my "Prosperity 101™" podcast just days before he became ill.
The episode was published the day he went into the hospital. I hope he was able to hear it.
Mr. Cain (as I have always affectionately called him) was a voice for all that is good and right, and his voice will be missed but never forgotten. I am in shock and fighting tears at the loss of my dear, dear friend and mentor.
My heart aches with his family and I ask everyone to keep them in their prayers as they grieve. I thank God for Herman Cain and am thankful for the times we worked together to promote freedom and liberty in our great country.
If you want to honor his memory, please get in the fight for our country. He would want us all to turn to God for wisdom and to do all we can to keep our country free.
We must let his life be an example and be as fearless as he was. May we honor his legacy.
Linda J. Hansen is the Former Deputy Chief of Staff to Herman Cain, Political Strategist, Podcast Host and Founder & President of Prosperity 101, LLC

OPINION: Well, President Trump has a good supporter in ‘Heaven’ now still fighting the fight for the President and probably speaking to Almighty God now.
Sometime, those that leave up goes to early goes to a place that they can make an even better difference on earth and that’s HEVEN!
Keep up the good fight Mr. Herman Cain, we know that you are in Gods hands and will make even a much better difference for many of us on earth. 🙏

Avengers Illuminati: Oval Office part 2
"Now for the final question. Pro life or pro choice? Professor Xavier we will start with you." Said Laura Thompson. Xavier wheeled out to the center of the stage. " It amazes me how we can justify this topic. Look at it from the scientific and human stand points if we jail people for fighting dogs but it is okay for a woman to take the life of something growing inside her. It has a hearbeat yes? I classify it as a human being personally but call it what you want it still has a heartbeat. If you want to call it a fetus that fetus still eventually becomes a human that means you are taking life. That person could one day become president or something else. I have stated several times tonight all life is valuable. Why wouldn't a child's yes a child's an infant what ever you want to call it this is what they become and to me already are. Why wouldn't they be more important than an animals. What if Mrs. Rogers aborted Captain America? You may argue someone else would have taken his place sure what about the man who created the super soldier serum? Captain America was key to the victory in World War two without either of those men the doctor and Captain America world war two might have went very different." A large part of the crowd errupted with applause. "Mrs. Williams Its your turn to speak." Jameson said. She walked past Xavier with a defiant sneer. " I believe in Pro-choice. What if the baby is born with a terrible deformation? What if the birth process would kill the mother? What IF IT'S a MUTANT? I will allow abortion all the way up to the 36th week. These two would rather a child grow up motherless than spare your woman's lives. And Xavier wants MORE mutants to use to cleanse the earth of us humans. I will make sure none of this happens if you elect me president I will make sure there will be no more mutants born through a testing program. The power will be given to the women it's our lives and we will do with it what we please." There was a minor amount of clapping and shouting from some of the crowd. "Mr. Hartford will close out the debate tonight." Carlisle said. "My statement is pretty simple. I agree with Charles Xavier. Human life is precious." Hartford said quickly. People started getting up and going over to the canidates. Laura Thompson and Jameson Carlisle began to close out the televised debate. "Well Jameson it was indeed an interesting Debate. It seen a lot of mud slinging by the republican and democratic parties, while the independent Charles Xavier stayed the course and simply stated his views which I firmly believe helped his case because people are tired of hearing nothing but lies and garbage that has no place in the political arena." "Laura your statement is correct however Monica Williams was leading the polls and I think she still will be." Replied Carlisle. "This is quite possible but there is no argument that Xavier helped his case. We still have two presidential debates and a vice president debate. Which the vice president debate is next . Thank you for watching goodnight." Surrounding the professor were Namor the sub mariner, T'Chala the king of Wakanda and better known to some as the hero Black Panther, Doctor Stephen Strange, Logan better known as Wolverine, Blind Lawyer Matt Murdock known as Daredevil, Reed Richards better known as Mr. Fantastic, Tony Stark also known as Iron Man, Hank McCoy also known as Beast and the ghost rider Tyron Owens. "Great job Charles." The blue furred Hank McCoy said walking up. "Truly terrific buddy you spoke well for all heroes and mutants everywhere." Said Stark walking up looking at his phone. Everyone was dressed in fine suits to look as best they could. It was clear that Tyron and Logan were uncomfortable in their suits. "Thank you all. This has been a group effort so far and will continue to be one." Xavier began "We do however need to form this final group of ours. So far it's you two." Xavier said looking the direction of Owens and Logan. "We need humans on this team as well not just mutants. We need to show that we are not just for our kind or spiritual beings. I wasn't meaning to leave you out Owens." "Understood sir." Owens said. Tyron was wearing an all black suit including his shirt and tie. He is an African American freestyle motocross and bmx rider. His hair is cut into a Mohawk. "How about me Charles?" asked Murdock "No you are far too busy Matt. You have already offered to be the attorney General if we win. Plus you are an avenger and have so much else on your plate." "What about Castle? He'd be a great addition with his military experience." Asked Logan. "Well yes he would be good but I feel he might be too much of a hot topic right now with a wide majority of the country." " Hey guys." said a voice walking up. It was Hawkeye a S.H.I.E.L.D agent and member of the Avengers. He is well known for his abilities as an archer and a master assassin. Hawkeye is in mid thirties and wearing a S.H.I.E.L.D uniform walking into the circle. "I'd like to volunteer myself for this group you were talking about on the debate." he said. "Agent Barton you are already oh so busy between S.H.I.E.L.D and the Avengers I possibly couldn't ask this of you. Besides how did you get here so quickly?" Xavier said addressing Hawkeye. " I was in town at the Pentagon dealing with some business at the S.H.I.E.L.D wing. Fury said I can be relieved of some of my duties with S.H.I.E.L.D to serve you Mr. Future president." Answered Hawkeye. "Well that settles that. How many people are you wanting on this group Charles?" Owens asked. "I am thinking eight would be a strong number so only five more to go. Maybe a hulk would be a good addition." Said Xavier. "How about A-Bomb?" asked Owens "Hmmmm Rick Jones might be a great addition would you please go talk to him and see if he would come on board?" Xavier asked of Owens. "I'll leave first thing in the morning." Replied Owens. " Kurt would be a great addition Charles." Logan said "Yes he would Logan please give him a call will you?" " Hey I have a friend who might be interested. I can go talk to him if you like." Stark chimed in. "Who do you have in mind?" Asked Charles. "Rhodey. He has been dying to help anyway possible since you began this campaign." Stark said still looking at his phone. "While this is all rather positive I feel we are fighting a losing battle here. However we will still unveil the new group the day of the vice presidential debate. Stephen are you prepared?" questioned Xavier. "Charles I am well prepared to speak circles around these poor fools." "Mmmmm i share the good doctors confidence especially some early polls have you in a close second instead of the distant third you were in before the debate." Stark said showing his phone to the group. "Well there is already a great victory Charles and I am very sure Doctor Strange will do great as well." Said Murdock gripping his support cane. A few days later in front of the press sat Professor Charles Xavier on a stage with his group of chosen heroes behind him and his cabinet stood next to him to show their support. That they ALL were a team. "Good afternoon I have called you all here before the Vice President debate to introduce you to the new lineup of the service team that will be protecting as well as serving out other orders of myself and the vice president. The leader of the group will be Wolverine." Wolverine stepped forward in his traditional black and yellow X-Men outfit and acknowledged the crowd. "Next our second memeber Ghost Rider Tyron Owens." Owens stepped forward wearing motocross pants and a metal mulisha hoodie with flaming skull. It was a signature hoodie to that was made in honor of the mulisha sponsoring Owens as well as acknowledging the fact he is a Ghost Rider. "Next is Rick Jones. Known as A-Bomb and a hulk member of the agents of S.M.A.S.H." The blue skinned hulk with spikes for a Mohawk took his turn stepping forward to acknowledge the press. "The fourth member is Cliff Barton also known as Hawkeye. And our friend in the Iron Man like suit is James "Rhodey" Rhodes or as many have come to know him as War Hammer. Our sixth member is a teacher at the Xavier school for the gifted and once a member of the X-Men Nightcrawler. Our seventh member is brought to us thanks to Nick Fury the S.H.I.E.L.D director. He is from an alternate universe but has been working for S.H.I.E.L.D here for sometime. He is Miles Morales also known as Spiderman." "Our eighth and final member has not been decided as of yet. We also are working on a name for the group at the moment as well." continued Xavier. "But once we have someone we shall announce it. Thank you all for coming and please enjoy the vice president debate." Xavier and his cabinet along with his unnamed group met backstage. "Well I think that well." Said Wolverine. "Yeah this group is off the hook." A-Bomb said in a sing song tone. Professor X chuckled "Thank you Rick your enthusiasm is much appreciated." Said Professor X. "Charles if it is okay with you I wish to retire to my hotel room for a brief time before the debate to meditate and focus on the verbal battle that is to come." said Doctor Strange. " I think its a great a idea for us all to get some rest before the debate." Professor X said in agreement. "We will all meet at the auditorium for the debate. Afterward we will all go to dinner at the nice restaurant across the street." A few hours later people were packed into the auditorium of the University of Maryland. There were two long legged black leather chairs with a few feet between them for the repulican and democrat vice president canidates. On the end was a circle of candles on the floor for Doctor Strange to meditate. "Good evening I am your host tonight." Said Jameson Carlisle. "Coming in now are our three vice president canidates. For the republican party we have Joseph Groening." Groening was wearing a black suit with a white shirt and American flag tie. His hair was a salt pepper look to it. He looked like He was in his mid 40's. He sat down on the far chair. "Next from the democratic party is Tom Ross." Ross looked to be in his early 50's. His hair was a dish water blonde and he was dressed in a dark navy blue suit with a white shirt and blue tie. He took his spot in the middle chair.

Democratic Debate Guide: Nov. Debate at Tyler Perry Studios
The first four Democratic debates of the 2020 presidential election are in the bag and the fifth will take place on Nov. 20.
When and How to Watch the 2020 Democratic Presidential Debates
What Past Democratic Debates Have Revealed About Candidates
The Democratic National Committee has approved up to 12 debates, with six scheduled for 2019 and six more set for 2020.
The Next Debate MSNBC and The Washington Post will co-host the fifth Democratic presidential primary debate in Atlanta, Georgia, on Nov. 20. It will be held at Tyler Perry Studios and all four debate moderators will be women, MSNBC announced. The debate will air from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. live on MSNBC and Radio One. It will also stream on MSNBC.com and the Post's website, as well as across mobile devices via NBC News and the Post's mobile apps and Urban One's digital platforms.
Live Coverage: The First Democratic Debate, Night 1
Previous Debates The New York Times and CNN co-hosted the fourth presidential debatein Westerville, Ohio, at Otterbein University on Oct. 15, with 12 candidates sharing the stage over three hours. It was the second primary debate of the cycle hosted by CNN and the first for the Times in more than a decade, the newspaper reported.
ABC News' hosted the third debate on Sept. 12 at Texas Southern University in Houston. The debate was harder to qualify for than the first two (more on that below), and that higher threshold combined with a winnowing candidate pool meant this was the first of the 2020 Democratic debates to feature all the highest polling candidates on stage at the same time.
Fact Check: Dems' Missteps on Climate, Wages in Debate
CNN hosted its debate on July 30 and 31 from Detroit, Michigan. Qualifying rules were the same as for the first debate.
The first debate, sponsored by NBC News, MSNBC, and Telemundo, took place on June 26 and June 27 at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, Florida. Watch everything each candidate said on night one and night two.
The Democrats Who Appear to Have Qualified for MSNBC's November Debate Are
Former Vice President Joe Biden
Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts
Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont
Sen. Kamala Harris of California
South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg
Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey
Entrepreneur Andrew Yang
Billionaire activist Tom Steyer
Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota
Former housing secretary Julián Castro and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii are also part way there, according to an unofficial NBC News tally. They have met fundraising requirements but still need to boost their poll numbers.
The 12 Democrats Who Qualified for the Fourth Presidential Primary Debate in Ohio Were
Sen. Klobuchar
Sen. Booker
Mayor Buttigieg
Sen. Sanders
Former Vice President Biden
Sen. Warren
Sen. Harris
Entrepreneur Yang
Former Rep. O’Rourke
Former housing secretary Castro
Billionaire activist Steyer
Rep. Gabbard
Here is a look at top moments from the three-hour debate, where hopefuls sparred under the shadow of the House impeachment inquiry. This was the first debate since Sen. Warren's status rose as a front-runner and after Sen. Sanders had suffered a heart attack.
The 10 Democrats Who Made the Third Presidential Primary Debate Lineup in Detroit Were
ABC News said the following podium order (left to right) was set by polling averages, with the highest polling candidates closest to the center of the debate stage:
Sen. Klobuchar
Sen. Booker
South Bend Mayor Buttigieg
Sen. Sanders
Former Vice President Biden
Sen. Warren
Sen. Harris
Entrepreneur Yang
Former Rep. O’Rourke
Former HUD Secretary Castro
Here is a look at top moments from the debate, where the top leaders in the polls all shared the stage for the first time.
The 20 Democrats Who Made the Second Presidential Primary Debate Lineup in Detroit Were
CNN held a live drawing on July 18 to determine the debate order for each night.
The first group of 10 on Tuesday, July 30, were: Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, Mayor Buttigieg, Rep. John Delaney of Maryland, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, Sen. Klobuchar, former Rep. O’Rourke, Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio, Sen. Sanders, Sen. Warren and Williamson, the author.
The second group of 10 on Wednesday, July 31, were: Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado, former Vice President Biden, Sen. Booker, former HUD Secretary Castro, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Rep. Gabbard, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Sen. Harris, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee and Yang.
Here are a few more things to know about the CNN debate.
Night one included Sanders and Warren, who have each staked out aggressive, progressive policy positions. They did not go after each other as some predicted they might.
Night two featured a rematch of Harris and Biden. During the first debate, Harris went after Biden over his record on race, in a moment that led the news in the days afterward.
Montana Gov. Steve Bullock made the debate stage for the first time, having secured his spot after Rep. Eric Swalwell of California exited the race.
The 20 Democrats Who Appeared in the First Presidential Primary Debate in Miami Were
The first group of 10 who appeared on Wednesday, June 26: Sen. Booker, Sen. Warren, former Rep. O’Rourke, Sen. Klobuchar, former Rep. Delaney, Rep. Gabbard, former HUD Secretary Castro, Rep. Ryan, New York City Mayor de Blasio and Washington Gov. Inslee.
NBC News has a full transcript here.
More coverage from night one:
The second group of 10 who appeared on Thursday, June 27: Sen. Harris, former Vice President Biden, South Bend Mayor Buttigieg, Sen. Sanders, Sen. Gillibrand, Sen. Bennet, Williamson, Rep. Swalwell, Yang and Gov. Hickenlooper of Colorado.
NBC News has a full transcript here.
More coverage from night two:
Three candidates who failed to make the cut for the first debate were Gov. Bullock, Rep. Moulton, and Miramar Mayor Messam.
Here is more information about all the candidates.
How Candidates Qualified for the First Two Democratic Presidential Primary Debates
In February, the DNC published specific debate guidelines spelling out what candidates have to do to participate.
Democratic candidates could qualify for the first and second debates by meeting one of the two following sets of criteria:
Criteria 1- Polling Method: Participants must register 1% or more support in three polls (which may be national polls, or polls in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and/or Nevada) publicly released between Jan. 1, 2019, and 14 days prior to the date of the debate. Qualifying polls will be limited to those sponsored by one or more of the following organizations/institutions: Associated Press, ABC News, CBS News, CNN, Des Moines Register, Fox News, Las Vegas Review Journal, Monmouth University, NBC News, New York Times, National Public Radio (NPR), Quinnipiac University, Reuters, University of New Hampshire, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Washington Post, Winthrop University. Any candidate’s three qualifying polls must be conducted by different organizations, or if by the same organization, must be in different geographical areas.
Criteria 2 - Grassroots Fundraising Method: Candidates may qualify for the debate by demonstrating that the campaign has received donations from at least (1) 65,000 unique donors; and (2) a minimum of 200 unique donors per state in at least 20 U.S. states.
If more than 20 candidates had qualified, here is how a tiebreaker would have worked, according to NBC News. Candidates who met both the polling and fundraising criteria would get preference. If that still didn't winnow the field, then preference would go to candidates with the highest polling average.
How Candidates Were Selected for the Third and Fourth Debates
For the third and fourth debates, the DNC essentially doubled the polling and fundraising thresholds set for the first two debates — and required candidates to meet both standards, instead of just one or the other, NBC News reported.
Candidates needed to register at least 2 percent in four major polls conducted this summer and receive donations from at least 130,000 individual donors, including at least 400 in 20 states.
Since only 10 candidates qualified for ABC News' debate under the new standards, they all appeared on stage together for one night. The fourth debate will feature 12 canidates, also on one night.
How Candidates Qualify for the Fifth Debate
The fifth Democratic presidential primary debate on Nov. 20, to be co-hosted by MSNBC and The Washington Post in Georgia, will become a little tougher for candidates to qualify.
Candidates must have 165,000 unique donors, with at least 600 of those each coming from at least 20 states.
Poll requirements will inch up to 3% in at least four national or early state polls. Or, a candidate could hit 5% support in two early state polls. The change would reward a candidate's momentum in Iowa and New Hampshire, The Associated Press reported.
Who Is Moderating the Democratic Debates?
The fifth debate on Nov. 20 will be moderated by Rachel Maddow, host of "The Rachel Maddow Show" on MSNBC; Andrea Mitchell, host of "Andrea Mitchell Reports" on MSNBC and NBC News' chief foreign affairs correspondent; Kristen Welker, NBC News' White House correspondent; and Ashley Parker, a White House reporter for The Washington Post.
Previous Moderators CNN anchors Anderson Cooper and Erin Burnett co-moderated the fourth debate with The New York Times' national editor, Marc Lacey.
ABC News' George Stephanopoulos, David Muir and Linsey Davis and Univision's Jorge Ramos moderated the third debate.
CNN's Dana Bash, Don Lemon and Jake Tapper moderated the second debate on July 30 and 31, the network reported.
There were five moderators for the first debate: "TODAY" co-anchor and NBC News chief legal analyst Savannah Guthrie, "NBC Nightly News" and "Dateline" anchor Lester Holt, "Meet the Press" moderator and NBC News political director Chuck Todd, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow and "Noticias Telemundo" and "NBC Nightly News Saturday" anchor José Diaz-Balart.
Holt moderated for both hours. Guthrie and Diaz-Balart co-moderated for the first hour, while Todd and Maddow joined Holt for the second hour.
The DNC has said it will have at least one female and non-white moderator at each Democratic presidential debate.
"The DNC is committed to an inclusive and fair debate process," DNC senior adviser Mary Beth Cahill told Refinery29, which first reported the debates would have at least one female moderator. "That means that all 12 DNCsanctioned debates will feature a diverse group of moderators and panelists including women and people of color, ensuring that the conversations reflect the concerns of all Americans."
HuffPost later reported that the debates will also include at least one person of color as a moderator, who could also be the same person as the female moderator.
Which 2020 Candidates Have Dropped Out of the Race So Far?
Rep. Swalwell
Former Sen. Mike Gravel
Gov. Hickenlooper
Gov. Inslee
Rep. Moulton
Sen. Gillibrand
Mayor de Blasio
Rep. Ryan
Rep. O'Rourke
*Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz both considered running for president but decided against it.

Atiku Abubakar: His Biography and Profile
On the 25th of November, 1946, a child was born in Jada, then a small town in what is now Adamawa State, and that child grew up to be me, Atiku. Though born into a humble background, I have been fortunate, and life had been a blessing to me. As an orphan without a father or siblings, and a very poor mother, I grew up alone, but have been blessed by divine providence. I was given an education, against the stern wishes of my father, and that education has prospered my life.
Over these past months interacting with this great generation of young Nigerians, one thing has shone though: you have a dream to push Nigeria to her full potential, and I say you have the right to dream for that better future for Nigeria. It is possible. We don’t often hear about the Nigerian dream, but I am evidence of the Nigerian Dream. I am evidence that a poor child can rise from very obscure beginnings to prosper in a rewarding career, retire to build an immensely prosperous business, and go on to occupy one of the highest offices in his country. That is my story.
A businessmen and a former customs officer, Abubakar’s vast wealth has led his opponents to accuse him of using his position in government to enrich himself and to channel government funds and foreign investment towards his own companies.
After declaring in 2006 that he would be contesting the presidential elections, the country’s electoral commission attempted to block him from running, arguing that he was ineligible to stand as he had been indicted to stand trial on corruption charges.
However, Abubakar challenged that decision in court and in April the supreme court of Nigeria overturned the commission’s decision and reaffirmed his right to run for president.
Career Abubakar was born into relative poverty in north-eastern Nigeria. Orphaned at the age of eight, he studied medicine and then law before becoming a customs officer.
In 1999, he became Nigeria’s vice-president and oversaw the privatisation of dozens of state-owned firms.
His political opponents accused him of using this position to enrich himself. In 2005 he was investigated on suspicion of receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars from US firms in return for promoting their goods in Nigeria.
He has four wives, some of whom are Christian, which had led many members of Nigeria’s Christian minority to see him as the presidential candidate most likely to protect them from Islamist groups which are becoming increasingly popular in many parts of Muslim-majority Nigeria.
Political Controversy Atiku Abubakar’s campaign to become president has been the subject of intense controversy and media interest after the government attempted to prevent him from standing as a canidate for the country’s main opposition party.
In November 2006, he announced he would run for president and a month later was chosen as the presidential candidate for the Action Congress, the main opposition party.
Atiku Abubakar’s decision to run for president came soon after he helped to prevent Olusegun Obasanjo, the president, from changing the constitution in order to run for a third term.
This political manouevring caused a rift between him and Obasanjo, formerly his long-term ally, and sparked an attempt by the ruling Popular Democratic Party and its allies to prevent him from running.
Other News: Atiku Abubakar Emerges PDP 2019 Presidential Candidate At the end of the count of the votes at the presidential primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar polled 1,532 to clinch the ticket.
The Fulani-born Waziri of Adamawa, businessman and politician beat 11 other contestants to face another tribesman. With the win, Atiku Abubakar would have to face incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari of APC and Mr Donald Duke of Social Democratic Party (SDP) and some others in the February 2019 presidential election.
He joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and sought the party’s ticket in 2014 but lost to President Muhammadu Buhari at the primary held in Lagos. Atiku Abubaker defected again in May to PDP where he on Sunday clinched the ticket to tackle incumbent President Buhari in the 2019 presidential election.

P4
underestimated the danger the prank represented after they’d watched stuntmen on tv walk away from the trap without breaking a sweat when the original prank idea was deemed boring by the group. In short, the entire lot of them were all children who had acted without truly thinking about the repercussions of what they had signed up for before they’d acted. In their favor, they had at least substituted fire ants for carpenter ants who were less likely to intentionally sting someone if they could get away from them first. Still, if it were possible to die from mortification, he would have surely been in danger of passing at that moment. Shere Khan had stared down at them, dark eyes imperious, he had opened his mouth, but whatever he had been about to say was interrupted by the Doctor’s arrival, and he’d diverted his attention to the medical professional. Donald had been administered a series of drugs to help him with his body’s response to the stings, and while they’d prefer to keep him overnight for observation, they were confident he would be well enough to go home the next day. He’d heaved an internal sigh of relief then, glad to see one problem resolved safely. Shere Khan had nodded and thanked the man. then those eyes had settled back on him, he was close enough for Scrooge to see how very red the man’s eyes were, the kind of deep red it would be impossible to remove from a man’s feathers, bold and overpowering, the stain would remain long after the attempts to scrub them clean had been surrendered. He’d asked then if he could be content to rely on him to ensure proper punishment was meted out, as he would rather not go to court over the issue if it could just as easily be settled out of it. He’d stared at the man for a moment, realizing he had been waiting for an official medical report to be issued before deciding how seriously he would be taking the prank gone horribly wrong. He’d decided, likely because Donald was set to make a clean recovery, it was best to leave the punishments to the family. It was a logical way of assessing the situation, and for a moment he’d envied him for his ability to keep rational in an emergency. He’d wondered for a moment, what would have happened had Donald’s recovery taken a turn for the worse. He’d cut off that line of thinking at the root, not at all comfortable where it lead. He’d nodded to the tiger, and assured him he would be taking the matter very seriously indeed. The man had caught his eyes for a moment, quietly judging his words, before he’d nodded, accepting what he’d said at his word. He’d departed then, removing himself from the chair with what he could now admit in the privacy of his own mind, was a grace owned by few. They’d snuck in to visit Donald for a moment, none of them content to leave without visiting the patient, and then they’d headed home in silence, the children wondering what he planned to do to them, and he exhausted beyond words by the entire mess the evening had been. He had left the actual punishment to Beakley as he’d never been good at that end of guardianship. Part of him always felt it was either too lenient or harsher than the situation required, but he fully embraced the “it takes a village” approach his family took to child rearing and felt her to be the better judge of what should be done. It had been her to suggest going on outings away from home (weeks before the incident, but he’d ignored her, not wanting to be anywhere near Khan in an environment where he did not have the home field advantage), and they had begun finding places for their child to visit. Paradoxically he’d felt more comfortable around the man after his nephews had made their misguided attempt to remove him from their lives. Maybe it was the fact that he had kept his head after learning what the children had attempted to do to him, but he no longer seemed quite as threatening as he had before the event. It had caused him to do a reassessment and what he’d found had made him feel uncomfortable. The man had unnerved him, and on an instinctual level, this made sense. His ancestors had been hunted by animals very like the cat himself, and, typically speaking, even in more modern times the individual peoples, Avians, Felids, Canids, lapins, Ursi, and the many many many others that coexisted in the beautiful world they lived, tended to stick to their own. Truth be told Donald had been the only one he had known who had actively sought the company of a Dog and a Mouse with any degree of frequency. Even that had seemed to drop off after the boys had hatched as he’d yet to hear the slightest mention of either Mickey or George in his presence since Donald had arrived. He had, without meaning to, approached the man as one would a dangerous predator, and the children in all likelihood taken note of his behavior and decided he should be treated accordingly. Which in all honesty was not fair to the man in question. Shere Khan was by no means a “people” person, but he had been making more attempts at cordiality since the second meeting. He’d certainly never threatened him or his family physical harm, unlike Flintheart, who was still planning out his demise, even after being made Godfather(he would always regret the decision to cave to his nemesis’ demands. Glomgold’s attempt at an Italian-American accent was absolutely atrocious). So, with that in mind, he’d set out to be…nice. To his surprise, after the inevitable awkwardness that came from tearing off the plastic of a new idea, meeting with Shere Khan, actually enjoying himself rather than being content to remain stonily civil, had become surprisingly easy to do. And, most surprising of all, he had begun to look forward to the play dates the two men scheduled for their child. There was something about being with someone who remembered historical events you’d lived through who was neither related to you nor has pledged their life to ending yours that he would found somehow freeing in a way he’d only found before with Goldie. Even better was that it had none of the heavy emotional complexities that would always exist between himself and the woman who was, he admitted to himself, the great love of his life. Instead, he’d found an intelligent conversationalist and occasional debate partner to discuss current events and frequently laugh over what the modern Americans felt were “traditional values” that had in no way been present when either of them had been children. Khan was close-mouthed about the events of his childhood, but he suspected from the way the man carried himself, calm and poised, never too angry or too pleased, never allowing himself to seem too emotionally vested in things he cared about lest they were potentially used against him, that it had not been a good one. These were all signs of emotional abuse, of that he knew. What little Scrooge did know was that the man was an Indian Immigrant who had been born during the time of the English occupation of India, but after the revolution that had ended the control of the East Indian Trade Company. It was not an easy time for anyone to have grown up in and he did not press his… friend to share information he did not wish to give. Instead, he did what he usually did when faced with a person of interest with a complicated and potentially traumatic backstory he knew nothing about and suspected asking outright could cause more trouble than it was worth, he had paid an aide to look into the subject’s history behind his back. He was bad enough at handling interactions between himself and people he knew had sensitive sides best not prodded. A clear example of this could be seen in the relationship he shared with Donald. (though he suspected there might have been something psychological in that. his nephew reminded him far too strongly of people he had also shared a problematic relationship with and at times it had unintentionally bled through without his notice), he did not want to accidentally fumble over some old hurt and set Khan off, especially now that things were surprisingly pleasant between them. Irritatingly the search had given him absolutely nothing to work with. The name “Shere Khan” had been present in the birth records recording the birth of Indian tiger cubs but none had matched his description. This had left him to conclude that either the status of Khan’s parents had been so low his birth would not have been recorded, or the name everyone knew him by was a pseudonym. It would certainly explain why the name “Shere Khan” hadn’t appeared till a certain entrepreneur had appeared seemingly out of nowhere. Either option, he knew would not be welcomed as a topic for casual conversation, so he had resigned himself to doing what he had initially pretended to do and “let things be.” Moreover, no what he had done after making that decision was not in fact pouting, no matter how many people had rudely asked him why he was supposedly doing it. This meant they had needed to find out for themselves what they considered to be “safe” topics to argue over. Furthermore, neither of them had been willing to let social etiquette dictate what they discussed, so everything short of Khan’s childhood seemed fair game. And so, it was politics had been the first topic they had ever argued over since he’d unofficially called a truce. Specifically FDR, Khan was surprisingly enamored with what he remembered of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Scrooge had nearly spat out his drink at that revelation. Yes, he’d managed to make a successful political comeback in the face of a debilitating illness(whether it was poliomyelitis or Guillain–Barré syndrome) that had left him paralyzed from the waist down, but his memories of the man were not as positive, and the faults he had found in his personality only began with his infuriating ego. This had been the same ego that had Roosevelt confident enough to order then vice president Truman to use the servant’s door simply because he had not liked him. They had eventually agreed to differ, realizing each was very set in

History Lesson #2: Zimbabwe
The next leg of our journey was to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, to see the largest waterfall in the world based on its height x width, creating the largest sheet of falling water in the world. The falls were “discovered” by David Livingstone in 1855, a Scottish missionary and explorer, and named after the imperialist queen herself, Queen Victoria (OK- I really like Queen Victoria but her government did do some pretty awful things). As much as I like Queen Victoria, I think the native name for the falls is a little more fitting, Mosi-oa-Tunya, which translates to the “Smoke that Thunders”.
Pictured: Statue of Livingstone inside Victoria Falls National Park
Well, after Livingstone found the falls, things started to go downhill for the people living there. In the late 1800s, Cecil Rhodes, one hell of a SOB, decided to claim both Zimbabwe and Zambia for Great Britain, renaming the area, Rhodesia (after himself of course)*. After taking over Zimbabwe and Zambia, Rhodes’ mining company then proceeded to extract the valuable minerals from the earth, making a huge profit for both himself and the crown.
Pictured: The Smoke that Thunders
Fast forward to the 1960s, nationalism starts to increase in Zimbabwe and Zimbabweans begin the violent fight for independence from Great Britain. This is when former Zimbabwe President and war criminal, Robert Mugabe, first enters the scene with his Zimbabwe African National Union. Fighting continued through the 1970s, and then finally in 1980, Zimbabwe received independence with Mugabe taking on a role as head of state, which later turned into a dictatorship. During the immediate years following Mugabe’s election, Mugabe was responsible for taking out all opposition to his rule. During this time tens of thousands died.
Then in 2000, Mugabe’s government started to implement a land redistribution act, taking lands from white ownership without compensation. And the government did not take these lands quietly either, they took them by using violent force. During this time period, the majority of whites living in Zimbabwe were forced to flee.
Now, unfortunately for Zimbabwe, these lands and businesses made up the majority of Zimbabwe’s economy. When the whites were forced to flee, the land became worthless, the government mismanaged the land and Zimbabwe’s economy completely collapsed.(Take note South Africa, study your history and learn from it!) And when I mean completely collapsed, we are talking about hyperinflation out the wazoo. The government printed so much currency (1 trillion dollar bills existed) that it became worthless. Today these large bills that were printed during the crash can be exchanged on the street for USD to take home as souvenirs.
Today Zimbabwe is just a mess as ever. In late 2017, Mugabe was thrown from power by a coup d’eat. Since then his Vice President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has held temporary power until elections could be held. We arrived in Zimbabwe about two weeks prior to the election taking place. There were signs everywhere showing the faces of the many candidates as well as posters with instructions on how to vote. People seemed hopeful for the first time in most likely decades. They were excited about what the change in government could bring.
Pictured: A campaign poster and instructions on how to vote
Unfortunately, the results of the election and its aftermath are troublesome. Acting President, Emmerson Mnangagwa won the election with 50.8% of the vote. Opposition immediately protested the results, claiming that the election was rigged. The government then ordered the military to turn on the protesters, resulting in death and violence on the streets of the capital. It is most likely that a revote will occur.
I can go on and on about why Zimbabwe is the way it is. I can go deeper into the issues of the election and tell you about the unrealistic promises canidates made (if you think US politicians are bad you should read what these guys and gals were promising: https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/996157/zimbabwe-election-president-candidate-robert-mugabe-zanu-pf-MDC-alliance).But I will tell you the main reason why Zimbabwe is such a mess today was the lack of equal education and right to self government during the age of imperialism.
