Day 11: City

Day 11 of @oc-growth-and-development OCtober. Once again, without my wonderful wife, @nightsminx this would not have been writen.

It felt nice being back in the capital, Xariah thought to herself. It had been several months since she had been here; several months since Imperial Intelligence had sent her out on a training mission. Being out here was better than the solitude she had been in the past few years...the city held a different kind of solitude for her: the ability to be around a lot of people but still be able to keep to herself and blend in. It was probably the same reason why Intelligence trained her as an Operative, she - after all - was just another human within the crowd.

At least that’s how it looked on the outside. On the inside she was buzzing with the latest cyborg technology: location trackers, facial recognition and biometrics trackers. She knew where she was at all times and how to get to where she needed to go. She could recognize everyone on the streets and had access to all vital information. She always knew whenever her health was low, when she needed to fuel up, and when she needed to rest. By the looks of her, though, no one would ever know. 

She took a moment to stare out at the capitol building, the three spires which showcased the three ruling orders within the Empire rising high into the sky. The spire on the left was reserved for the Mandalorian clans still allied with the Empire, though rumor had it that the new Mandalore may break their ties. The spire on the right was the one reserved for all of Imperial Intelligence, the one that she should be heading to to report in to her superiors. The center spire, and the largest of the three, was reserved for all Sith and where the Dark Council resided when they were on the capitol.

“Impressive, isn’t it?” A new voice said beside her, breaking her from her thoughts.

Xariah turned her attention to the newcomer, her cyber implants taking in every detail. The first thing that she noticed, was that the other person was nonhuman - a Cathar, to be exact - and the second thing that she noticed was that the person was female. The female Cathar was lightly armored, and Xariah found her eyes wandering over the exposed dark grey skin that could almost be called fur. Even so, the style of the armor was recognizable as something a Sith would wear. When Xariah glanced down at the other woman’s waist, she saw no lightsaber hanging there like she would have expected. It was then that she noticed the vibro-sword which was sheathed upon the Cathar’s back. That was certainly an interesting choice of weaponry if the other woman was indeed a Sith.

“It...sure is,” Xariah responded as impassively as she possibly could, while waiting for the data on the woman to load.

“Which one are you heading for?” The other woman inquired.

Xariah took several moments to consider, her implants having not found any relevant data on the woman. Which either meant that her database was outdated and she needed to resync it with Imperial Intelligence, or the Cathar woman was a fresh arrival to Dromund Kaas. Either way, she wasn’t one to feel like she needed to keep a secret, if anyone wanted her killed they would have ample opportunity to do it wherever she went. 

“Imperial Intelligence. What about you?” Though she wasn’t one for small talk, she wanted to know more about the Cathar woman who wasn’t registering in her database. 

“Can’t you tell?” The Cathar woman was rather sure of herself, as if her body somehow exuded exactly what she stood for. Xariah was quite certain she was a Sith—only Sith would have that confidence about them—but she wanted the Cathar woman to humor her anyway, so she blatantly stared at her as if she truly had no clue. “I am heading to Central.” 

“Sith or Dark Council?” The words were out of her mouth before she could stop them from spewing and she wasn’t sure whether she should be glad or concerned that the other woman was laughing.

“Do you not know who I am?” The woman asked, almost incredulously. 

Xariah shook her head. Normally, yes, she would know everything about this woman but for some damned reason that could only be her luck, the database was failing her today. As embarrassed as she was feeling, she couldn’t say it aloud.

“I am Lord Varilia’s newest apprentice,” The Cathar said.

As if the name was a key, information flooded her mind and her eyes widened in shock. Lord Varilia, the Emperor's Wrath. That … may actually explain why the Cathar woman was surprised someone hadn’t recognized her. It also explained why the other woman wasn’t already in her database, depending on when the Cathar woman gained her apprenticeship, Xariah was probably still on her training mission.

The Cathar woman chuckled, “I must be on my way, our Lord Wrath is not known for her patience.” The other woman started to walk away, calling over her shoulder as she went, “Perhaps we will see each other again.”

Xariah watched the Cathar woman walk away, not really sure what to make of the encounter. While she hadn’t had many interactions with Sith in the past, she knew all the stories. Almost every Sith was self-centered, ruthless, and beyond cruel to all - even to each other. Yet the conversation with the Cathar woman was pleasant, almost friendly and it was a direct contradict to what a Sith should be.

As Xariah walked into the Imperial Intelligence headquarters, she decided that she needed to resync her database with the most current information. Xariah smiled to herself, indeed when next they meet, Xariah would be prepared, and she was looking forward to meeting the mysterious Cathar woman somewhere within the city of Dromund Kaas.

Family Ski Retreat an Oasis of Stylish Comfort in a Harsh Landscape

A modern yet cozy family retreat in the Coast Mountains of western Canada has all the creature comforts and style to spare. The terrain and mountain environment may be harsh, but the house is a modern oasis of all the amenities a family could want during a getaway.

A modern, linear profile belnds the house with the surroundings

Called the Whistler Ski House, the residence was built ten feet above the ground, which makes it look like is floating among the trees and above the snow. More than just a design feature, the elevation protects the main part of the house from the flood-prone lakeshore.

Conceived by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig of Seattle, the house is actually two distinct buildings connected by a glass-walled bridge that spans 80 feet. The largest of the two wings contains the living and dining spaces, master bedroom, and two guest rooms. The second wing houses all the family's children in four rooms. The wing has enough beds to accommodate not only the kids, but their friends as well.

While the main aim of the bridge between the two wings may be to create privacy, it also adds an interesting design feature because it weaves through a stand of evergreen trees. The views to the outside, as well as of the bridge from the outside, are grand. Separating the two parts of the house also preserves more trees and adds opportunities for additional windows to capitalize on the views. One side of the house features floor-to-ceiling windows that offer an expansive view of the mountain lake at the bottom of the property, as well as the forest of aspens, firs and hemlocks beyond it.

The main living area is open and very versatile.

One of the most intriguing elements of the house is a custom horizontal shutter system. The design not only creates privacy, but it also protects textiles, upholstery and art inside the house from fading due to the harsh snow glare. It's a simple system that uses crank and switch controls to transform the façade according to the weather and the family's needs. The shutters can convert the front from a bank of windows to one that is semi-exposed, shielded by raw-edged Douglas fir louvers. For more severe weather or when the family is not in residence, the windows can be completely covered by weathered steel panels.

The raised home is protected from flooding.

The home site had more challenges than just a flood-prone lakefront and extreme winter weather. The soil on the lake shore is very soft and deep, and the entire plot is in an area at high risk of seismic activity. For this reason, architects had to design a continuous 2-foot thick raft slab to support the house. The slab is set on densified soil that was prepared using a series of vibro-densified rock columns penetrating 60 to 68 feet into the ground.

The slab “floats” on the fortified soil, allowing the house to remain stationary during an earthquake that could cause the unimproved soil to slide down into the lake.

Inside, the house has great style and a very sophisticated yet relaxed ambiance. Plenty of open space makes the area flexible for all the things a larger group of family and friends will want to do. Comfortable furniture and cozy throws add to the warmth of the light-filled space. Clean lines and an unclutter visual lines throughout make it aesthetically pleasing.

The fireplace is the focal point of the open main living area.

The home's large fireplace is also out of the ordinary. The mammoth concrete fireplace is double-sided, maximizing its usage and serving as a divider at the same time. The fireplace structure separates the main living and dining area from the media room on the other side. It also features custom enclosure doors that slide, allowing the homeowners to adjust the size of the fireplace opening in the media room, which is a smaller space.

When not in use, the space can be fully closed.

The master bedroom is focused on comfort and the view.

The “adult” section of the house is a retreat like no other. Uncluttered bedroom designs put the focus squarely on the spectacular view outside, which is the star of the property, day or night.  The minimalist decor, combined with the wood, create a warm and stylish bedroom.

The design of the bathroom emphasizes the tub and view.

Perhaps some of the most stunning views can be seen from the master bathroom. Floor to ceiling windows surround the soaking tub, making it a fantastic place to unwind after a day of outdoor activities. The minimalist design of the space only serves to highlight the views. A stunning stone floor with dramatic, dark striations pulls the eye through the room to the tub and the view beyond.

Unobtrusive stairs are located between the buildings.

Natural wood stairs to the ground level outdoors are nestled between the two sections of the house. The side railings are accompanied by an architectural grid that adds an element of safety as well as a visual complement.

The ski room has everything the family needs.

The ground level includes a garage, screened terrace and ski room, which is the epitome of an organized hub for the winter activity. With an entire family that loves the sport, the homeowners needed a way to safely and neatly store all the equipment as well as corral the wet gear after a long day on the slopes. A full ski rail and individual cubbies for coats helmets, and ski boots line the walls and a large bench sits in the middle. The ground-level room is an easy first stop before heading upstairs.

The sole pop of color comes from the oversized entry door.

The front facade of the house is also fashioned from natural shades of wood, stone and metal with one exception: The oversized, red entry door. It's a dominant pop of color on the otherwise neutral structure. Just three large steps with a low rise lead up to the entry, which is separated from the garage entry by a stone column.

An outdoor fireplace is a wonderful element.

Underneath the house atop the floating slab, an outdoor fireplace is built into one of the stone supports. It features a built-in concrete bench, which turns the slab into an architectural design element and not just a necessary function one. The house above adds shelter from the elements, increasing the number of occasions the family can enjoy the fireplace.

The house fits with the terrain and woods.

Taken all together, the unique and luxurious elements of this property create a dream mountain getaway for a family that enjoys skiing and the great outdoors.

I’ve been doing a lot of blogging about Lone Wolf, but here’s why I actually don’t recommend this short story: There are a lot of descriptions of women in this story with a focus on how gross and super unattractive they are.  While there are one or two examples of men or undetermined genders get similar descriptions, the vast majority are focused on women and after awhile it started to add up.  Initially, I thought, well, it’s just the author’s style, it’s part of the STAR WAS IS TOTALLY GRITTY AND GRIMDARK, YOU GUYS thing that the story seemed to have going on. But eventually it was just a little too focused on women and how ew gross they were. The other thing that keeps me from recommending this is definitely part of that STAR WARS IS TOTALLY GRITTY AND GRIMDARK, YOU GUYS about the Sith that show up in the story.  Who are all Darkness and Chaos, very much with the capital letters to let you know the significance of it. There is a line in this book, as the two Sith are chasing Obi-Wan down, and the woman of the pair things about her relationship with the man and this is what she thinks:  “And now, Kenobi's death was about to become the perfect consummation of their annihilative love.” THEIR ANNIHILATION LOVE. There is one really, really great moment at the end and if you don’t mind spoilers, you should at least skip to the end to read the final bit.  IT’S MY FAVORITE.

-  He spotted a decrepit wretch of humanity sitting in a crumpled heap by the saloon entrance, like some tragic mascot for the establishment. The hag - practically hidden within her oversized moon-moth-eaten robe - seemed hard at work on some craft. Yet, sensing Obi-Wan's advance with a beggar's honed instincts, she extended a gnarled hand for alms. -  Obi-Wan's heart was racing at lightspeed; the fetid stench from a nearby waste shaft - or this molding crone, he couldn't tell which - assailed his nostrils. -  The alms taker licked her shriveled lips. She held up a crooked yellow-nailed finger and bent it twice toward herself. Cautiously, Obi-Wan leaned closer. -  Looking even greasier in her coveralls than the Kaleesh, and as archaic as Old Vima, the humanoid was favored with an elongated cranium, bulging yellow eyes, and a wine-colored face wrinkled like she had spent far, far too much time in a Hutt hot tub. She resembled a leather-skinned Weequay except with hypothyroidism and a monstrous brain tumor. -  The wrinkle-faced woman rubbed her filthy hands together with a fermenting degreaser, and blue residue dripped from her furrowed fingers. - "Master Flat-flesh," the prune-face retorted, enunciating the slur with saccharine tenderness. "If she was, you wouldn't be trying to pawn her off on some brainless bishwag on Nar Shaddaa, now would you?" So the humanoid wasn't as brain damaged as she looked. -  A look halfway between insult and incredulity contorted Zegundis' mummied face. -  His hand moved faster than her sickly eyes could follow, seizing her tumorous head and stabbing the Force into the sensitive repository of her mind. -  There they were: the trio of obese Gamorrean sows he'd seen earlier, their jaws dribbling spittle onto swollen breasts, mixed indiscriminately with the mucus seeping from their porcine snouts. Their axes slapped happily into meaty green mitts. -  What he saw there were the same three Kyuzo toughs that he'd also seen in the vicinity of the cantinas. Muttering in their metal-weave vernacular, they escorted a trio of grotesque frog-dogs. The humongous wart-covered beasts strained against yellow laser-leashes, gnashing their splinter teeth and wagging fat tadpole tails in hunger. Though supposedly sentient, this disease-bearing litter frothed pink from their mouths with Cyborrean rabies. -  He had encountered Kyuzos before: startlingly agile martial artists, a group such as this was a match for any two Jedi. But these particular wiry-muscled specimens were undoubtedly go-zeki. If this is the case, then what is the relationship between a vibro-capitalism that is heard in and as contemporary politics and a vibrocapitalist impulse that drives and ratifies the reality of those same elements? Put differently, on what does vibration exchange? Maybe it’s time to forget the future, which was always a hallucinatory mnemotechnical destiny anyways; instead, the tuning is now and it brings with it questions that can only be (un)heard at scales that never quite sound.
