There's a popular tweet going around that's like "If you say your favorite anime is [string of Japanese words] and I find out that's just [English name of very generic popular anime] I'm shoving you into a locker"

And I take issue with that! Actually! Because it overlooks the context where some new anime starts airing--sub-only, referred to by its Japanese name only--which you and a micro-niche of like 4 of your mutuals decide to watch. And the only name it's ever called is the Japanese name, because there's no English speaking audience beside you and 4 weirdos reblogging gifsets from each other.

And then, months or years later, it blows up. Season 2 hits it big or some youtube personality does a waifu ranking of it and now Hot Topic is shilling its merch and Cosplay Tiktok is calling out some 14-year-old for race-faking and now someone asks you "hey what anime are you enjoying right now?" and you're like "oh I like [Japanese name]" and they have the audacity to go "scoff, you mean [English name]?"

catching up about fandom stuff

Oh, hi! Do you mind if I ramble a bit?

I feel like I've been a little distant and antisocial in the past few months due to personal stuff (mainly because my trauma bucket got kicked over many, many times, but also I've been trying to get the ball rolling on a few things I've been meaning to do for a while). And I know I'm not the only one who has been having a hard time. But now it's spring here, and I'm feeling a little hopeful and a bit more inspired. Is it just me? Do we dare to be hopeful??

I'm reminding myself that both of my favorite urban fantasy series, and main fandoms nowadays are due a new book maybe this year, and that is exciting and very much things to look forward to! It also makes me want to quickly write fic ideas I have before the canon status quo changes lol (Not that it matters. I believe you can write whatever you want. But with both of these series, we love to theorize about what is going to happen, so it feels like things are just not going to be the same when we get new pieces of information, you know?)

I'm also acutely aware that I haven't posted a Harry/Nic fanfic since the OTP challenge in NOVEMBER 2022 wtf. And uh, yeah. If you needed any further proof of my poor mental health then it is probably proof enough that I haven't touched my favorite obscure little OTP.

The good news is, that I have actually been inspired to write lately. I'm doing a little re-read of the FPA books, and also Skin Game, and it's all putting me back in the mood for fanfic. And I have been typing away for the past few weeks, trying to get back into it.

The bad news is, that I don't feel like posting things yet. I just want to be kind to myself and create without having to worry about sharing it. I know this might sound hypocritical bc I just shared a post about connecting in fandom. At the same time, sometimes it does good for a story to just let it sit and simmer a bit.

There is this expression (that I don't think is actually very popular in the English language) "to write for the drawer" and I never thought that was a bad thing. Sure I write very niche stuff so you would think it doesn't matter either way, but a story is never the same after you release it out into the world. So it's okay to keep it to yourself for a while and tinker with it and enjoy the process.

I also discovered gif making for myself. (If you have seen the gifset I posted yesterday, no you didn't :P I put it on private bc I wasn't happy with it yet. Mainly bc of the subtitle thing. I either have to figure out a clever overlay or venture out into the foreign planes of the internet to forage a little bit more lmao) I think the popularity of gifsets on tumblr is so fascinating, bc it's a format that just isn't very popular elsewhere (or convenient lol). When I was younger in fandom I never had a good enough computer to do this kind of editing. So now it just made me so happy to realize that my computer can do it, and I found it a relaxing activity.

I already dipped my toe in it with that Hellraiser/DF quote gifset, but now I figured out a method to make it look a lot better. And with open source tools too! That made me especially happy lol But I also realized that if I want to post gifsets then I might have to break my "no sideblogs" rule... Anyway, this is just one more thing that I will probably experiment with privately, and then we'll see if I put it out there or not.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is: creative hobbies are important. And if you can bring yourself to do them even when you feel like shit, it usually helps to feel a little less shitty. And that I will incubate my little projects for a while longer and then maybe I will feel like sharing them.

Last Thing Researched for Art/Writing/Hyperfixation: see above. my topic for the paper looks at how iranian muslim women have reconciled with their religion as it was being used against them pre and post-revolution. there's a lotttt of material out there on the topic. despite what we've been led to believe in western culture, my professor stresses that iran is actually the most secular country in the world. and when you look into the history you can clearly see why that is.

Favorite Old Fandom You Wish Would Drag You Back In/Have A Resurgence: the atla fandom was/is so obnoxious but in its height in 2020 it was fun seeing a really rich meta appear on the dash for every 5 dumb opinions. everybody was making gifsets and art and fics and it was so much fun. now its slowed down a bit and the only parts of fandom still kind of active are the shippers lol

I've noticed that you have been blogging about Cartouche. What drew you to that story?

Heyyyy!! Not all that active in the Dourif fandom these days myself, but i mean, you follow me, you've probably seen me still reblog the occasional gifset :p A whole lot of trivia about the guy and the movies he's in still occupies space in my brain rent-free after all these years, ain't getting rid of that at this point. Actually did a whole LOTR rewatch around last fall and got to see a projection of Return of the King with a live orchestra playing the soundtrack! It was so, so good <3 (did i cry when they brought on a lady to sing Into the West? Yes.)

The Big Cartouche Fanfic is currently on hold because i'm stuck on it, so i've been focussing on small oneshots! Still, if you remember anything about the fics i wrote back then, you know i never did much beyond very short-form stuff; it's still wild to me that i managed to stay focussed enough to get to almost 50k on the same project.

I've always enjoyed capes-et-épées stories (i guess the closest english term for that genre would be "swashbuckler"? I dunno that sounds more "pirates" to me"), but a lot of period pieces tend to focus more on court intrigues and rich people backstabbing each other, which tends to be less my jam*? The old Cartouche cartoon took this kind of setting i liked, and mixed it with more of a Robin Hood vibe! And they have a whole cute ensemble cast! It's also one of those rare-ish kids shows where the main characters are actual adults, and that probably drew me to it back then too. Falconi, the one character i draw a whole lot, has always kinda remained a bit of a comfort character to me; look back far enough on my blog and you'll find little drawings of him every couple of of years! He's a angry guy with a sad backstory, what can I say, im a simple man writing him a big stupid redemption arc has been very entertaining, i have feelings about it

* i say that, but i HAVE been reading a whole lot of History books for about a year now and the ones that include all the petty, ridiculous details about these people are My Favorites. PLEASE, Jean-Christian Petitfils, tell me more about the time Philippe d'Orléans whacked himself in the face with a tennis racket, this is the content i crave

Anyways, what lead to this current bout of absolute brainrot is i was reading up on the show, and then opened a few wikipedia pages for the couple of characters who are named after real people. Then on my birthday i went to the bookstore and they just. happened to have a very neat biography of Philippe d'Orléans?? (it's the Thierry Sarmant one, it has pictures) And now i have far too many books and know a whole lot of trivia about a very niche time period. It's been a good time! Hi, have you ever had it where people don't really respond that well to something that you've really enjoyed writing? I know people say write for yourself etc, but I had a fic that I absolutely poured my heart into that bombed. I'm trying not to let it get to me but it has knocked my confidence in my writing and I don't know how to get it back. Any suggestions?

Hiya! I tried to piece together my thoughts on this as best as I can. I tend to ramble a bit if I'm left to my own devices, but I tried to focus on my personal opinion on this, so I really hope it helps even a little bit!

It's always hard when you pour everything into something only for it to go unnoticed - be it art, fics, crafts, gifsets, edits, etc. - so I definitely understand the sense of discouragement that comes with seeing your hard work sit there and collect dust, so to speak.

But it's also really hard to determine what is going to gather the most attention versus what isn't. I think clinging to idea the popularity/number of kudos, hits, notes, etc., will always set you up for disappointment.

I know people often say to just enjoy what you write, and write for yourself - and this is all very true; once you find your niche and start honing your skillsets, everything else feels just like a bonus. I enjoy creating these little scenarios because it feeds into my desire to put my favourite characters into Situations. It also allows me an outlet for whatever intense emotion I'm going through at the time.

That being said, of course, no one would deny that engagement of any form on something you create feels good. However, I personally don't think focusing on numbers is what you should try to get gratification from.

One thing I have found is that there is nothing more impactful than sharing your work with others who enjoy your content.

I've always enjoyed the giddiness and satisfaction of sliding into my writer-friends DMs with an Idea™ and then watching them lose their minds over it/get hyped with me about this little thing I'm interested in. It's infinitely more gratifying to see people who regularly interact with you and your work enjoying it more than any number could possibly bring.

Maybe trying to find people within your fandoms who you can share work with, and engage in each other's content might help in the long run. There are certain fics I wrote EXCLUSIVELY because I knew it was going to absolutely ruin a few of my friends, and then seeing the comments they left just reinforced my belief that no number could ever amount to the beauty of seeing them go absolutely mad over something silly I penned out.

First of all, if you haven't explored it already, you may enjoy my tag #he suffers so beautifully, which is pretty much all the Luke Skywalker pain in one place. I actually took a long time to start reblogging Luke in pain images and gifsets (and some I still don't) because they really sort of hurt my heart, no matter how fabulous Mark looks all contorted and wounded. I'm not a huge fan of whump actually, despite those tags ahahah. Don't really read it and you still won't find a lot of "off with his hand" scenes in my archive, for example. But you make an excellent point--some actors are just sexy when they suffer and there ain't nothing wrong with that.

I think one reason some people (yourself included) may find the electrocution scene so much of a turn on is how those muscle spasms, "o" faces, scrunched-up eyes, tousled hair and jerking hips give us a dark/warped mirror to the erotic throes of orgasm. Someone flailing around so elegantly, those long fingers, those tightly-clad legs....yeah.... Sigh.  There’s a reason it’s called la petite mort, you know? 😈

Anyway, definitely don't feel weird or perverted about being into it. I get it. There are whole dissertations about how horror movies, for example, are these psychosexual outlets--examining the penetration of knives as phallic metaphor, etc etc and so forth... Lots of logical connections between agony and ecstasy, in other words.

Also, and I have discussed it here before, the "I am a Jedi" Death Star scenes are really the crowning hotness of all the Luke scenes in the trilogy. Like I don't know how everyone on set kept from creaming their pants that day/those days. Mark looks SO ridiculously sexy both before and after he's zapped, it honestly doesn't surprise me at all that the zapping also is melting everyone's butter.

As for other weird movie moments that turn me on, I am a sucker for the blood-spattered hero. I mean, Kevin Costner in Dances With Wolves? Mel Gibson in Braveheart?  I’m dating myself but cut me some slack hahaha

These are dudes who take a lickin' and keep on lookin' lickable muwahahah. So Mark in that bacta tank, absolutely. I even commissioned art for that to have him super 美少年.

I think part of the attraction to these moments is they humanize our larger-than-life heroes, and they look so good doing it...It's like the old anime cliche of that single line of blood on the cheek. Our gods bleed, and that makes them attainable. Or something like that. I'm on a tangent now.  But cinema is full of heroes that only get sexier the more they suffer and angst, so it’s a logical and very understandable kink, imo.  Thank you for this ask anon, and I’m so happy I have content that will feed that thirst for suffering Luke.... Oh no do I even have three fandoms oh no. John Segundus from JS&MN! He's the cinnamon roll he's the guy who asks inconvenient questions he's so polite he's a drenched kitten. I want to feed him soup (I don't care how much he wants beefsteaks he's getting soup) and listen to him ramble about magic. I think there's a lot of potential for exploring hidden depths (Ed) and how the events of canon have shaped him.

Leliana from Dragon Age: Origins! I love how she came to her faith in a roundabout and disastrous way, and how other members of the Chantry turned against her after she talks about her visions. And even after being constantly rejected and threatened by the people she loves, despite the personal danger she's in, she still just wants to help people in a world about to be overwhelmed by darkness. Ahhh I just love her. Also she (and Zevran, from the same game!) is one of the first characters I... read? experienced? saw featured in a piece of media I enjoyed? who is canonically bisexual and actually talks about her attraction to multiple genders. Redheaded lockpicking devout spymaster queen.

Kim Secretan from Will Darling Adventures! Honestly I could say, like, all the characters from WDA (Maisie ILU) but I'm focusing on Kim here because I feel like he goes through so much growth. He's a very different person at the end of the series, which is good because hoo boy he's kind of awful in a lot of ways at the beginning. It feels very earned, though. He acknowledges the ways he hurts people and chooses to do better, even though it's hard and he isn't sure he can do it. That's great I love that.

By reading it! I discovered Harry Potter fanfiction when I was 17-18, and let me tell you, I was very confused about it for a bit, I thought it was some sort of dark canon. But then I started reading it and I was like "oh cool, I can think of alternatives for this story and write them and share them with other people too??"

This is a case of mind going blank immediately and forgetting every meme I ever saw, but a light shone at the end of the tunnel, and it was a piece of white paper, and it said "this forest is old. old as balls." This comes from this LotR gifset from 2013 (!!!) that I actually don't see as often as other memes these days (I hope to fix that now), but somehow it was burned into my brain and now it's all I think about whenever I watch this scene.

But I can't claim her as "my" biggest supporter because she's just The biggest supporter of all the creators she enjoys, like... at one point in the HxL fandom, the words "kind and generous" were being overused in relation to people whose support proved to be very conditional and it made me kind of allergic of using them myself, but La Julie genuinely is kind and generous with her words and her time. Getting a fic comment/essay from her is like !!!!!!!!! MONTH MADE. She's often down for giving your fic a read before you post it and squeeing all the way, or chatting about headcanons and fic ideas, or nudging you into writing that niche AU. And of course, she's a brilliant writer in her own right, whose fics feel like a warm hug (or leave you in need of a cold shower...). Big love for La Julie! 💕

favourite thing to cook/bake: sadly i don't do enough cooking or baking to know but what i have made is fudge which was quite fun! ive also made a delicious cheesy pasta bake hehe

opinion on circuses: ive only been to one in my life and i really enjoyed it apart from the clowns who i found scary but i was like 8 i think. im less scared of clowns now. also the general aesthetics of them fuck severely

do you have any sense of direction: hardly lol! i have a great photographic memory so even going a certain route once with someone who knows the way i can remember it HOWEVER i am utter shit at finding my way with a map on my own. google maps is always open when im trying to find a place and even then i frequently go in the wrong direction or miss a turning. i just cannot translate distance on a digital map to irl distance. don't even get me started on using a traditional map bc g-d above. id end up more lost than i was before. im excellent at just confusing the hell out of myself <3

Last Book You Enjoyed Reading: Haha, very funny, but definitely the above!! The first book in awhile where finishing it made me feel empty rather than victorious… It had become such a part of my daily routine that i’ll really miss it! Will definitely be checking out some of the extended reading suggestions in the back when i have more book-buying money!

Last Book You Hated Reading: I was about to say I don’t know because i’m VERY selective about what i read (and also just don’t read that much if i’m being honest), but THEN i remembered this fucking AWFUL birding “memoir” that i attempted to read back in Fall of 2019 and had to quit because it was just soooooooo pretentious and full of itself… i’m not naming the book, partially because i don’t remember and partially because it’s a pretty local thing… not something widely published, and i’m not here to punch down. but Yeah. Terrible experience, 0/10. The amount of birders who think they’re qualified to write a memoir just because they’re well-traveled is STAGGERING…

Favourite Thing to Cook/Bake: gosh idk… I do cook and bake a decent amount, but it’s not something i really enjoy doing… I guess anything that lets me knead dough… That’s one thing I do enjoy because i like the feeling and it smells great too!

Most Niche Dislike: Since getting into giffing, I have a real pet peeve for gifsets that aren’t slowed down enough. Like. I guess this is a preference thing, but imo there’s a certain amount of slowing down that you need so that your gifs don’t move awkwardly fast and many people overlook that and just go with whatever the default setting is regardless of how the finished product looks in motion. I won’t reblog otherwise flawless gifsets if they move too fast because it totally ruins it for me. I no longer find it enjoyable to look at.

Opinion on the Circus: like. morally?? or is this a reference i’m not getting? Regardless, i don’t think i know enough to answer this.

Do You Have a Sense of Direction: For the first time in a long time, yeah, I think I do. Maybe not long term, but i’m not looking to lock myself into one track forever right now, anyway… Short-term, i’m really getting it together and am super proud of myself! Definitely feel like I’m working towards a coherent future now, finally!!

Social Media Anon Here!

Firstly, never change Grumpy ;) you are probably the only person on Tumblr to LISTEN to another view and let it change a prejudice.

Secondly, the Padagram/Social Media change bus continues. Don't be fooled people will be looking at positive and negative reactions to that change on social media.

So here goes!

1. They are starting to market season 2 of Walker in Hiatus. That really doesn't happen. That means they know they need to target new viewers. They are acknowledging they have a problem. The main problem is Jared either didn't learn enough about production quality on SPN (Jensen/Misha were both more interested in behind the camera's) or that he thought he could stick a Stetson on and we all had such sh1t for brains we'd watch anything. So they need a viewer boost DESPARATELY and are going all out to (a) persuade Walkers remaining viewer(s) that it's worth sticking around and (b) get back old viewers or convert 1m+ viewers to season 2. So now we see all the cast (and Keegan has more followers than Jared and Lindsay has a VERY engaged following) trying to persuade their followers how fabulous Walker is. Expect this scrabbling to continue if they want their COVID paychecks.

2. Connected to 1, Jared has started trying to break out of the fandom bubble. I don't think he's trying for power couple (the clue in a power couple is that two FAMOUS people get together and create a super brand, here we have one niche C famous guy and a hanger on wife), I think we are in Jared profile raising and trying to raise his recognition score, which is probably a little low having half assed it in the last year and a half. He's doing it by scatter-gunning so I'm not sure it's going to stick.

3. Connected to 2,

(i) if I run my algorithm clean laptop with a "Jared Padalecki" news search, I get (a) a daily mail article on Jared "clarifying the rift" (b) a "hello" magazine saying he's been "inundated with support after death of "family member"" (c) the new york times article on Walker and Supernatural. It then goes into a variety of articles about Jared raising money for Holly's family (fucking atrocious in my view to use her death for publicity) and a series of derivative articles on his mantrum and later explanation. ONLY THE NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE MENTIONS WALKER other than as a throw away, all of the others link to Supernatural only. Walker isn't on the main radar of anyone as a show. It's not mainstream enough to mention. it has ZERO buzz.

(ii) if I run the same search on my compromised tablet, I get a SEA of fluff articles "jared padalecki goes to venice", "jared padalecki's wife wishes him a happy birthday" "jared padalecki goes to watch soccer" "jared padalecki goes to the wrestling". I'm expecting "Jared Padalecki defecates regularly" tomorrow.

At the end of that I get the same articles as in (i) but the majority of his publicity is still going through the fandom and the, not very viewed, endless zine type websites that update on every episode of every geek show every day.

So we are seeing, and I expect it to continue, a break out Padalecki, (who knows he and his forehead may wish to have a final crack at films), and a fluff Padalecki, trying to stay relevant a year after SPN relevance ended, because he hasn't got the same push for season 2 of Walker as he had for season 1 and Walker has zero presence. No one, not even the fans are talking about Walker.

Will it work? I don't think so. Keegan has 7m followers on Insta and that's because he's a photographer and writer and it's interesting. I would follow his account (I don't), but certainly it isn't a Walker instagram.

Jared is a clever guy, but he's boring on social media. He has a limited appeal. He does family snaps, hunk snaps, flogs orange pee and flogs his show. He says "family" and "mantra" a lot but that's really it. The clue is, if you didn't know who he was and came across his instagram you wouldn't follow him. Why would you? For a video of a guy running up steps? A smug picture of two middle aged men trying to flog you something?... (oh and lots of "brother" comments on Keegan's social media, which is irritating. It's like he thinks that is his repeatable formula and it isn't).

His media approach won't work because advertising and exposure pushes a product. In TV's case, it's not a one off product and there is a lot of competition. Product Jared needs to be more interesting (his mantrum's are the only exciting thing about him - and that is tragic) and his TV show just needs to be BETTER, well, a LOT BETTER.

Soooo, expect the Padapush to continue, but it's not about a couple, it's about individual marketing and for Jared breaking out of SPN bubble. For Gen, it's her tag along profile that she'll never break out of. She'll have to be satisfied with her superpower of being able to persuade people to buy toothbrush's and dog food (if she can).

Expect though the couple's bit to die off a little. Jared is getting over exposed. His engagement rating is plummeting (nearly 3% is a plummet) because of the repetitive photo content. He'll have to back off or people will switch off (I have already). What makes me laugh is.... from the dawn of time when cavemen took their wives 2 miles away for a new cave weekend.... NO ONE HAS EVER BEEN INTERESTED IN SOMEONE ELSE'S HOLIDAY SNAPS.... Gen and Jared apparently need to learn that lesson...

I might stop these posts now because, well, it's gotta be a bit boring for you and I write LONG. :)

I started following Lindsey on IG because she seems pretty genuine, and her cat is way too cute! Plus, I like her attitude. I haven’t followed her for the whole Walker season, but even she doesn’t post a lot about it. She posts interviews and then posts about that night’s episode, but other than that, nothing.  Can’t speak for Keegan, but how are fans and non-fans supposed to be excited about a show when the people STARRING in the show can’t be bothered? Maybe they’re all aware of how shitty it is or maybe they’re lazy, but it doesn’t make sense. 

I’m always interested to see the difference in an “algorithm-free” setting and one that has an algorithm. I always figured Google was the same for everyone, but seeing the difference in articles you’ve outlined is insane. It really just goes to show that Jared isn’t the star that his stans think he is. He’s not as important as they think he is, he’s just an actor.  It’s even more jarring to see just how little Walker is talked about at all. All of my devices probably have been “contaminated” when it comes to algorithm so I can’t really speak personally about the public and fans talking about Walker or not talking about it. I can say that on the posts about Walker from the Supernatural Facebook page, a good chunk of the comments are people saying they stopped watching, never got into it, or thought it was trash. There are only a handful of comments talking about how they enjoy the show. 

I think it was disgusting for him to use a fan’s passing for publicity. And no, I don’t think it was anything other than a PR stunt. Her family had a GFM going that was promoted by plenty of the case INCLUDING GEN, so you know he knew about it. But for him to make his own special one and then have articles posted everywhere about how charitable he is? That’s gross PR bullshit and I hope it backfires. 

I still follow a few Supernatural fans, Jared fans, Jensen fans, etc. on Tumblr and even they aren’t mentioning it. I think maybe the hardcore Jared stans post gifsets or whatever, but I don’t see much praise for the show itself, just Jared’s looks. Even the fans aren’t biting and that would make me reevaluate everything if I was Jared.

I mean, I could see him doing like a side character role or something small, but I can’t see him having a big part of a movie. Like I said, maybe that’s me being biased but I see him staying in TV. I could be proven wrong, but I don’t know. 

I agree about Jared being boring on SM. I used to get some giggles from his Twitter posts and even some of his early IG posts because they were goofy, clever, and candid. It showed his humor and was more personable. Now it’s just all fake and comes off as someone whose only motivation to engage with fans is money and that’s a big turn off. 

For me personally, I think that if instead of the “couple goals” bullshit that they try to push for their lavish trips, if they just posted cool pictures they took of different locations, activities, food or whatever, that would be more palatable than all the “Look at my hubster and I! We’re in Italy! Look at how in love we are!” But maybe that’s because I’ve become a bit of a photography nerd? 

I guess time will tell whether or not Jared will make positive changes and if Walker can be saved, but I’m not really optimistic about it.
