A formal portrait with Laurence and as much of Temeraire as would fit.
(btw is there an active Temeraire discord? I’m rereading the books and am having Feelings about them again 👀)

It is literally impossible for me to hear “I’ve got a theory” without saying “that it’s a demon”

He could scarcely have imagined even saying such a thing a year ago; he did not like to think it now, but honesty put the words into his mouth. Roland did not cry out against it, but then she was an aviator herself. She reached out to stroke his cheek, and drew him down to such comfort as might be found in her arms.
Will Laurence and Jane Roland in Naomi Novik’s Throne of Jade. My favourite couple, polar opposites on the outside but very much alike ;)

“Perhaps you were not aware, Captain Laurence, that Longwings will not take male handlers; it is some odd quirk of theirs, for which we must be grateful, else we would be deprived of such charming company.”

He came around to make his bow, and nearly stumbled as he saw her clearly; she was not unhandsome, but her face was marred badly by a scar that could only have been made by a sword; the left eye drooped a little at the corner where the blade had just missed it, and the flesh was drawn along an angry red line all the way down her face, fading to a thinner white scar along her neck. She was his own age, or perhaps a little older; the scar made it difficult to tell, but in any case she wore the triple bars which marked her as a senior captain, and a small gold medal of the Nile in her lapel.
Naomi Novik, His Majesty’s Dragon
Finished portrait doodle of Jane, in a very experimental chasseur- instead of naval-inspired uniform… but aren’t aviators also riders, in a way? Meh. Guess I didn’t get her scar quite as horrific as it’s described in the books. But this is what she looks like in my head, when she is yelling at me to stop letting people walk over me just because I’m rather small and female… seriously I can’t begin to put into words how much I adore Jane ;)

Roland sr. and jr. - this may have happened some 10 years before the events in the books. I imagine Jane must have been grounded for at least a little while after getting her face slashed, and no matter how much she would have hated it, there might have been at least one little person who appreciated it…!

“My husband is dead,” she said, with finality, “and my daughters will be raised proud children of the Tswana here, not as beggars in England.”
Naomi Novik, Empire of Ivory
I finally managed to colour Lethabo and Kefentse, my beloveds! I just love the way the Temeraire series contains so many unconventional woman leaders.
(By way of apology, I really wanted to make her dress historically accurate, but it seems I screwed up: googling Tswana traditional dresses turned up a lot of very pretty indigo printed shweshwe fabrics. Which - as I found out AFTER I’d whipped out the watercolours - were only introduced into South Africa in the mid-1800s. Oopsie. There is a brief history of Tswana clothing here.)

Inktober “treasure” - Granby and Little
…probably sharing a fond farewell along the lines of “don’t let that mad dragon of yours run you into a world of trouble and try to come back with all limbs attached” “…of course, why wouldn’t I…??”

“Charming woman,” Gentius said, sadly. “She fed me my first bite, fresh liver, when my head was no bigger than her hand. One never quite gets over the first, you know.”
Naomi Novik’s Victory of Eagles.
(The picture is obviously a lot smaller in the actual scene… and Temeraire holds it, not Gentius… artistic license.)
