My blog turned 8 years old today!
My activity on Tumblr started as an anon on @momtaku 's blog somewhere during the Uprising arc of Attack on Titan.
I was inspired to start a blog because I've always loved talking about/criticising media, I really started to enjoy the insight of a number of the content creators for the series and along with this interest, the series itself showed up at the right time and right place for me, being about themes I care about and having flaws that I found interesting, too.
At that time AoT didn't have the issues I ended up having with it (despite of which I still have a soft spot for it), but it ended up being a very important, even a somewhat formative series for me although I technically wasn't at a formative age anymore because it served as a proxy for me to develop my voice as someone who likes criticism.
Despite my issues with the story, I think there were moments and points where it was very moving and powerful and none of the issues that showed up later removed that for me.
If it wasn't for AoT, I would've never sought out certain perspectives, never met certain people or sought out certain pieces of media.
I only recently, about 7-8 years after finding AoT found a story that I simply *care* about this much, even if I think some other series do what AoT does better.
Above all AoT made me care deeply to the point I wrote 1000s and 1000s of words about it across 8+ years.
And so here I am 8 years later.
The same yet older and wiser and different. I'd argue much more patient and much more open-minded. Maybe a better writer.
And probably not even 10% of that growth was because of AoT, but I certainly feel it at least played a part and that is very rare for a piece of media for me.
Very few pieces of media I've consumed in life have prepetuated change in me personally, but I will eternally remember them and I think even if my relationship with them may change or maybe some outside influence might change my perspective of them (it's entirely possible Hajime Isayama might end up being a complete asshole for whatever reason instead of just making a few jokes that cross some lines or having a 9-10 year old tweet or blog post saying dumb shit that contradicts his own series), the good in them will stay with me forever.
But the most important detail of all in this is that I mostly had fun. My current issues with fandom don't extend to specific series, but rather the general internet space.
The nature of a lot of recent discussion in fandom just isn't that interesting for me.
Tribalistic competition between communities of series, equating depiction to approval, removing feelings from media disscussion, fear of depicting loss or failure, criticising characters for acting human at all – all of these discussion trends remove why I like media in the first place and make it all pretty uninteresting to me.
People are complicated and not always right and the conflict arising from being a person is what keeps me coming back to media.
That's the art I look for because that's what makes me care and draws me in.
Hey, if you like that kind of discussion, more power to you! But I just don't find it engaging or substantial.
I consume media mainly to think about various topics I find interesting, to think about life and feelings.
Sometimes a simple series with simple ideas is nice to chill to once in a while, but I often lose interest in those kinds of series because they remain simple and thus become repetitive in a very specific way.
And during these 8 years, this perspective is also something that I slowly refined. My basic beliefs as a human being haven't changed for a long time, but the nuances and specifics have. These years simply helped me define them better – what I believe in and what I look for.
And here's to many more years of analysis and thank you to everyone who likes my stuff!

September Roundup
So it wasn’t a very productive month, writing wise. I think I wrote less than 1000 words due to various RL issues (a shoulder impingement giving me grief among other things). I can’t entirely blame that, but nor am I going to dwell. It’s my birthday tomorrow, and while I’m having the usual existential crisis about another year slipping by almost unnoticed and without significant accomplishment, I am resolved to return to my novel and get at least the first draft finished by the end of the year. We’ll see how that goes.
In the meantime, I’ve at least been reading more. I’ve also consumed too much film/tv instead of writing, but hey.
The Testaments by Margaret Atwood - the long-awaited sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, this was an engrossing read, if perhaps not what people were expecting. While I agree with some of the criticism, I really enjoyed this book.
Like the original novel, it takes the form of primary sources from the rule of Gilead, in Aunt Lydia’s secret chronicle, and “witness testimony” from two young women - one who grew up within Gilead, and the other outside. It’s fairly obvious from the beginning who they are, but I’ll avoid spoilers. Events become a little convenient towards the end, but it’s a great improvement on the tv show’s third season where things just became ludicrously easy and consequence free. I don’t think Atwood will ever write again in this world, but there is still so much to explore and I hope she does.
Henry VIII and the Men Who Made Him by Tracy Borman - As far as Tudor biographies go, there’s nothing much new here, but it is an interesting character study of Henry VIII through the men who had the greatest influence on him, especially as a young despot in the making. Through this lens it really does become just so shockingly clear that with a few exceptions, almost everyone of importance in Henry’s life goes through the same cycle of being built up, brought close, and rewarded, but then cast aside or crushed by his unchallenged power and narcissism - and often on very flimsy pretext.
Top End Wedding - I love a romcom, and this was really charming - it’s now on Netflix so I highly recommend. Starring and co-written by Miranda Tapsell, and directed by Wayne Blair (who also directed The Sapphires - a must see if you haven’t), it’s a film that shows great love to classic American and British romcoms (and the tropes are all there), but also uniquely Australian (Tapsell and Blair are both Indigenous, and care was taken to liaise with the Aboriginal communities where filming took place to ensure that proper approvals were given and and respect paid to the traditional owners). The backdrop of the Northern Territory is just beyond gorgeous, and this just the kind of heartwarming fare needed in these Trying Times (TM).
Bill and Ted Face the Music - As is this! I’ve loved the first two Bill and Ted movies since I was a kid, and was so happy that they’ve finally completed the trilogy. Look, it’s not high art, and you’d be forgiven for thinking this is just another cash grab off the sequel-reboot merry go round, but this was made with such clear love and affection for the originals that I just don’t care.
Here’s the thing: I hate an unnecessarily reboot as much as the next person - I don’t think there’s any point remaking something unless you have something new to say about the material. I also hate the “bleakquel” - where the only idea to follow up the original material is to tear it down just to rebuild it the same but without the heart (looking at you Star Wars). However, I am a sucker for the follow up/sequel just to catch up with those characters you love and see how they’re doing 10, 20, 30 years later. It’s familiar, it’s comforting, and sometimes that’s all it needs to be. Really, that’s all B&T FTM is, but I was perfectly satisfied by it.
Maybe there’s nothing more this film has to say than Be Excellent to Each Other (again), but honestly that’s a message I think we all need right now. There’s of course more to it than that - for the first time, we see a Bill and Ted who have become disillusioned that despite mastering so many different forms of music, they haven’t found The Song that will align the planets and bring out world peace etc, despite their most valiant attempts (That Which Binds Us Through Time: The Chemical, Physical and Biological Nature of Love: An Exploration of the Meaning of Meaning, Part 1 is a neat joke but also a legitimate banger complete with throat singing, a theremin, and bagpipes). And SPOILERS: In the end they discover honestly the only possible answer: that The Song itself doesn’t matter, it’s the world united through music, playing together, that brings everything into balance.
Does all the time travel work within the established rules of the universe? Not really - we see alternate Bill and Teds of the future without any explanation of alternate timelines. Are Samara Weaving (as Thea Preston) and Brigette Lundy-Paine (as Billie Logan) essentially doing impression of Winters and Reeves? Sure, but they are so charming that I don’t care.
Now, there are some obvious holes - covid made reshoots/pickups impossible so the opening “where are they now” montage got nixed, there was clearly more story for Elizabeth and Joanna (”the Princesses”) that is sadly missing, and the ending is very abrupt, but circumstances being what they are I can see why they decided to work with what they had and release the film, which is an antidote to the current, depressing state of the world, and at least in my view, a worthy third and final part of the Bill and Ted trilogy. (But I wouldn’t say no to a time-travel through music history show with Billie and Thea).
Disclosure (dir. Sam Feder) - a fantastic documentary exploring the representation of trans people in film and television, which sadly has often vacillated between lack of representation to misrepresentation, but with hope that things are slowly improving. A really worthwhile watch.
Enola Holmes (dir. Harry Bradbeer) - Twas charming! I hadn’t read (or even heard of) the YA books this is based on, and am uninterested in Stranger Things, but found this very entertaining and Millie Bobby Brown delightful in the title role. There was also a nice balance in the supporting cast, in that they resisted the urge to stack the decks too high in Enola’s favour, or make all the characters around her completely incompetent so she’s only heroic by default. She is clever and accomplished, but also finds that practicing jiu-jitsu is very different to an actual fight against someone trying to kill her.
Fleabag (seasons 1-2) - I never want to be too harsh on movies or tv that have been hyped to the heavens, because expectations are always too high and are rarely met. I liked this show, but did find all the smug asides and looks to camera a little grating in the first season. I enjoyed the second season a lot more, because while Fleabag was still a screw up, she wasn’t stealing money from her date’s wallet level terrible, so there was more of an emotionally satisfying arc (+ Andrew Scott who is always great), and I felt the humour was pitched a bit better. Olivia Coleman was the standout for me (isn’t she always?) as the Godmother, whose smiling, passive-aggressive villainy was masterful and worth watching for that alone.
Lucifer (seasons 1-2) - This show has crossed my tumblr dash for years, but I’m not really fond of crime procedurals. I am fond of mythology so seeing as the whole thing’s now on Netflix I decided to give it a go, and I have to say I am intrigued by the concept of the devil as a wayward son whose punishment for rebelling against God was to spend eternity punishing others, rather than straight-up evil incarnate. So far the procedural side of things is ho hum, but I am enjoying the mythology side, and Tom Ellis is very very handsome. I’m also pleasantly surprised at the number of female characters in the main and supporting cast and their treatment - they are actually allowed to talk and be friends with one another. Can you believe?!?

Rating the Fashion in D.N.Angel Art (Pt. 1)
(Because this meme is fun, and these looks deserve to be appreciated. Or in some cases mocked. :-P)
A nice, comforting place to start off the list. This striped hoodie is adorable, and very much in-keeping with Daisuke’s canon sense of style. The blue at the neck of his shirt provides a little contrast while still keeping it simple. He looks cute, wholesome, approachable. Exactly how I like my Daisuke. His cuteness is apparently so intense that he radiates little stars. Valid.
10/10 Classic boy-next-door charm.
This totally looks like a boyband album cover, but in a way that’s working for me, I’m not gonna lie. I like how they’re coordinated in their all-white outfits but the looks are still individual. Dark’s jacket is very cute, as is Daisuke’s in a more relaxed way. I like the little wing detail on the back of Satoshi’s shirt. Honestly my only criticism of this is why Satoshi looks like something splattered in his eye.
9/10 BACKSTREET’S BACK ALRIGGGGGHT
I thought I should include at least one piece that gives you a good look at the school uniforms. They’re very cute! The red-and-white color scheme is nice. (It was thoughtful of the school to match their uniforms to the protagonist’s coloring.) Those little cropped jackets on the girls’ uniform are very cute, and I like the detailing on the collars too.
9/10 Stylishly preppy without being too much.
I don’t actually think this look is objectively good. The arm-warmers look like random pieces of fabric that he tied in place with string. The shirt looks less “artfully ripped” and more like it’s being eaten away by acid. But none of that actually matters, because he is SELLING it. Look at the absolute confidence in those eyes. That look says “Maybe my shirt is disintegrating, because it JUST CAN’T HANDLE BEING THIS CLOSE TO MY BODY.” What he’s wearing is actually irrelevant. He looks absolutely badass.
10/10 FIERCE. Tyra Banks would approve.
It’s hard to put my finger on what exactly isn’t working about this. Riku’s shirt feels like it would be more in-keeping with her style if it didn’t have the lacing up the front. Risa kinda looks like she’s wearing a lacy nightgown with gloves. Neither of these looks is terrible, but I’m just not really feeling it. I feel like Sugisaki was maybe still figuring out Riku and Risa’s styles when she drew this.
6.5/10 Room for improvement.
A mixed bag! Daisuke might be wearing The Jacket(TM), although the coloring is different than when Sugisaki colored The Jacket(TM) later. In any case, he looks great. The combination of the black jacket with the red/white/black plaid trim looks very crisp and classic. Satoshi, on the other hand, looks low-key like a sleazy casino owner. The high collar/huge houndstooth print/necklace(?) combination is just too much.
5/10 Even my love for Satoshi cannot make that look work.
CUUUUTE. This is giving me very Bertie Wooster vibes, for some reason. He looks like the spoiled but good-natured heir to a fortune whose butler keeps needing to get him out of shenanigans. I would be down for this AU.
8.5/10 Fingers crossed for a Black Butler crossover.
WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE. I’m not actually sure I have words to do justice to how bad this is. It just looks like random pieces of fabric thrown together haphazardly. The little metal thingies make no sense. The orange-and-gold color scheme is garish. Nothing about this looks good, but beyond that, nothing about it even makes sense. This is the nadir of D.N.Angel fashion. For my sanity I’m going to hope it’s referencing some series I’m not familiar with.
-10/10 WTF.
An excellent palate-cleanser! I think the fact that they’re sharing a scarf is adorable. Riku’s whole look here is perfection to me - the way the red roses on her sleeves coordinate with her red gloves is VERY stylish, and those cute buttons at the wrists? Fantastic. Daisuke’s shirt seems nice, though I can’t for the life of me figure out what it says. Points for having a shared color scheme, although the fact that his shirt is white and hers is cream does clash a bit, arguably.
9.5/10 Overall, a great example of couple dressing done right.
THE JACKET(TM)!!!!!!! You can’t actually see that much of what he’s wearing (although the art itself is gorgeous), but I am incapable of being objective about this. Seeing this just reminds me of how much I adore these scenes, and this arc as a whole. Also the word bubble here is literally Satoshi talking about how he’s dying, and that is not remotely okay. Someone hug him, please.
1000/10 FEELS.
#d.n.angel#dnangel#dn angel#daisuke niwa#risa harada#riku harada#satoshi hiwatari#dark#satoshi hikari#yukiru sugisaki#official art#gorgeous art#clothes#fashion#rating meme#memes#this was a lot of fun to do!#there are still a ton of absolute gems I haven't covered#so you can definitely expect a Part 2#(and maybe further we shall see)#but I didn't want to make this too long so I think I'll limit it to ten looks per post

real quick before I get into season 6
So this is my second time watching Season 6 and I’m p. excited. This last week or so I’ve been dredging up bits and pieces, but most of it is a blur. It seems the memories that lasted this whole year were mostly of the huge armored truck and the nonbinary character who works at *spoilers*’s tech startup.
I’m curious to see if the second time through it’ll settle in like it belongs. I remember Season 5 really didn’t make any sense to me until I saw it again.
But really I’m just excited that in 11 hours I can watch the new stuff?!
But first, before I forget, here’s my last thoughts on Season 5.
So remember how I was surprised at Season 1′s structure, that it folded up nicely down the middle with some pretty tidy symmetry?
None of the other seasons do that.
Instead, I remember particularly strongly how jarring the end of the Ghost Rider arc was in the middle of Season 4. And then again when the (what I’m calling) Kasius arc also wrapped up mid-season.
I’m not sure when I read about it, but it probably was circa Ghost Rider, that they’d intentionally decided on what I’m pretty sure they called “pods” of episodes, these seasons-within-a-season sort of narratives.
Season 2 sort of kicks it off, what with the race to Terragenesis taking eps 1-10 and the Afterlife/splinter SHIELD stories filling 11-22. Then Season 3 has the monolith/Maveth mystery to start, followed by Hive & the Inhumans for the second half. S4 is super poddy, obviously branded as Ghost Rider/Agents of Hydra, and S5 also splits neatly into future!Lighthouse and present day!Lighthouse.
Two points to make on this:
Kasius is such a rockstar villain that I feel really bad for Hale/Ruby/Talbot. They’re so apples and oranges but having the highlight come first allows for unfavorable comparisons to be made. It’s like asking any well-to-do Kree to compare Xandarian snail to oops all berries.
Good thing they’d had all this practice writing complete stories in 12 eps, since I’m hoping Season 6 (and obvs Season 7) will still feel as fully formed as their longer antecedents.
Anyway, that first point is my major point for S5.
S3 already feels like the second half of S2, and its internal halves are the most similar to each other as any of the other “pods,” so it’s not like people have a reason to go around saying “I liked the first half of the season waaay better than the second.”
(although I might. I might say that, actually. but not because the halves were branded separately from one another)
And S4, though the two halves are barely identifiable as coming from the same show much less the same season, they’re both good. Robbie Reyes is perfect. The effort to incorporate new MCU topics/aesthetic from Doctor Strange is great. Robots who just want to be a real girl is my JAM. All the Framework cameos really make my day! And then Robbie Reyes comes back all deus ex machina (ironic) and saves the day, and
it makes sense that he does because the function and nature of the Darkhold was well established in part 1 and
it’s GREAT that he does because he’s perfect and we miss him.
Then here comes S5. I really really respect so much about the creative decisions that took the story where it went (ie, outside Papa MCU’s sphere of interference), and getting to reuse the same set in a different context while minimizing “on-location” shoots is just technical and financial genius, okay.
But there’s so much about the first half, in the future, that compels me waaaaaaay more than the gritty anger of the second half.
Kasius, WOW what a villain. Dominic Rains, everyone. I have nothing unkind to say about the performance, the character, anything. Impeccable. Spectacular. Perfection.
The mystery of the season opener! We had the tag scene where Coulson’s “in space” and plenty of time to ruminate on the how and why, especially with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 coming out right as S4 ended and Thor: Ragnarok literally sizzling in the theaters at the same time as this season started. They answer the question by the end of the episode, but not before several characters come up with and pursue several different theories, and that’s fun.
What a way to capitalize on the Inhuman storyline your show’s been about for years now, without forcing Papa MCU to contend with all this good work you’ve been doing. Just go somewhere he can’t reach you (the future), and then un-write all of it anyway. V. tidy. Extra style points will be awarded.
LEITMOTIFS. If y’all’ve seen BSG, then you know Bear McCreary is a master of the art. But this season has so many good themes, my friends. The Daisy/Quake theme that’s been knocking around for a season is here in full force, and Sinara’s is the best bad guy theme you could have wanted, and dearest sweetest Flint has the best great guy theme you ever heard.
Just, while we’re here. Sinara. She says nothing for episodes (it feels like, I wasn’t counting) and her first line is a scornfully growled “compassion.” Give it up for Florence Faivre !!! She hardly has any lines but you always know exactly what she’s thinking and what she’s about. Sinara and Kasius have the richest on-screen chemistry of anybody on any show from any era fight me on this I dare you.
Mack’s coming down from his second life in the Framework, and that suuuuucks that these folks never have a moment to rest before barreling into their next story. But he gets to be a father to Flint! And Yo-Yo gets to be a mother!!! UGH why couldn’t they have brought Flint instead of Deke lololol oh well.
I think I know another reason why Lincoln seems overhyped to me. That other Inhuman, Ben I think his name is? He’s in like two episodes, serves a narrative purpose, and is disposed. I know Lincoln’s in like 18 times as many episodes but they have the same exact overall impact on my brain-hole. Imagine if it was Ben that came back with them instead of Deke. That’s how I feel about Lincoln. Like, how did this obviously disposable character make it this far?
Then you have Deke. You love to hate him. He’s a very well-fashioned character who is flawless in making you feel the way the showrunners want you to feel. That’s the kind of character that gets killed off twice and still comes back, and it doesn’t surprise you.
So, Enoch. Enoch is everyone’s favorite character, right? Right. Give me genderless robots with a soft spot for humanity ANY DAY. PLEASE where are they I need them. (I’m un-repressing memories of S6 and I feel like somehow I should be careful what I wish for) Man I remember with 1000% clarity the absolute glee I felt sitting down for the opening montage of S5 the first time, how ballsy weird it was, just watching this freaky bald alien of a man go swimming with some fun electro pop number playing in the background. 100/10 please make more television like this
More monoliths!! The time one is so pretty!
(remember when there were more monoliths and no one knew where they came from or what they did but then it didn’t matter because they got instantly exploded?)
The low-key obvious answers to the season’s questions, what with the Inhumans running all over the shop, Quake there to tear everything down and Flint there to put the pieces back together I’m not crying you’re crying
Oh man, and Simmons getting to mentor not one but two Inhuman youths to be confident and trust in themselves and their powers. What a ways from the fear-panic response to Daisy when she turned.
Also, yeah, it has to be said, this show’s blatant “you’re different and that’s okay” agenda sits very well with me. Agents of SHIELD says LGBTQ+ rights!
So anyway, part 2 falls a little flat for me because its strength is its themes, but I’m not really compelled by the stakes and definitely not by the villains and not really even by the intra-team drama.
Obviously S2 touched on parenthood, but it was pretty specific. S5 digs in and brings us a lot more on the topic.
Kasius desperately desires his father’s approval but very deeply despises the methods and the people who earn it.
Hale was indoctrinated by Hydra and was very earnest in wanting to uphold the values of the organization, until the organization (and Whitehall) shared with her their narrow appreciation of the gift of her loyalty. Even then, she struggles to make sense of this loyalty, only realizing too late that being a good Hydra pawn and a good parent are categorically mutually exclusive.
Ruby, obviously, is like a mini-Kasius, the brave-faced rebel who wears her mother’s disappointment on her sleeve like a badge of honor to pretend that it isn’t crippling her.
The Von Strucker kid, boy is he messed up (and his Hydra dad had something to do with it)
((echos of Ward are still heard even this far after his demise, and we know what his father figures were like))
Poor Talbot, got some brain damage and some Hydra conditioning on top of that, cracked that noggin wide open. He just wanted to do good by his family. Just wanted his son to know he loves him.
Polly and Robin. The daughter who needs constant special care because she’s stuck inside her own mind and the mother who’s been through hell and back and still manages to do her best. Even when she knows she won’t always be there for her daughter. Even when she knows she’ll be replaced.
May getting a glimpse at the life she and Andrew once talked about. Getting a chance to do right by that little girl.
Mack recovering from getting that same glimpse, from the echoing memories of a life time spent with his greatest regret erased. Being roped into being a thug and threatening that dad without knowing the meaning behind his threat -- being told that people like him don’t deserve the privilege of parenthood. But then getting to know Flint, and having Yo-Yo at his side while they fast track this kid through all the things he’s gonna need to know in order to be the Big Damn Hero the world needs him to be.
The timey-wimey promise that FitzSimmons will one day be parents to a brilliant daughter who will unfortunately give birth to a Deke.
Coulson and Daisy. Another parent placing enormous expectations on his daughter, desperate that she be ready for his responsibilities because his time is running out. A daughter who mishandles these expectations and refuses to stop fighting a losing battle, not because she’s not ready to step up, but because she doesn’t want to face the fact that she’s losing the man who raised her.
Anyway, aside from all this good Theme work, part 2 wades perfunctorily through musty remnants of the previous season, from The Doctor to The Russian. Which makes sense, because that season ended in a way that left so many loose threads -- but then this season comes along and summarily ties them up, all cute little bows, the lot of them. Dusts its hands. Nothing to see here. Move along now. Time’s up.

There’s a Magic in losing
I have 3 trophies in my house, 3. One for a cooking contest won back in high school another Best Science student trophy and a recent one from poetry challenge.3, its not much but they say 3 is a magic number, that everything that comes in 3s is perfect…its a latin phrase "omne trium perfectum" everything that comes in threes is perfect Yes, 3 is a magic number…But I got involved with more than 3 contests or competitions…so much competitions, challenges and contests…writing, essays, running, gymnastics, swimming, spelling you name it… I’m front row losing.I think I participated in almost 30 Competitions if not more in Primary school only. Never won once! Now you woulda thought that would break ol girl’s heart but noooo…. At one point I took a seat and said I’ve had it I’ve never won anything, ever…but The losing…built me. It made me Goddamn funny too, by high school I had at least 10 break the ice lines for whenever I lost ..my favorite was‘Oh I forgot to pay them again’…I was focusing more on winning than on the competition.I tried harder every single time. I would go back try fix my little mistakes and yes I’d cry a little, okay… a lot I never handled losing very well, as a child I was extremely competitive. Sports day in st.marys there were 4 teams red house blue house yellow house and green house, I was in red house and was up for the running challenge, 1000 meters at the national stadium , long story short I lost, coming out 4th from a race of 8 wasn’t much of an achievement, I got so sick I stayed home for a week. Yes, I was that competitive, my face could not be seen at school again, I had failed the challenge…and the next sports day I was up and running, I was 8 this time….sick again. Of course the teachers would use their ‘never give up’ lines with me all the time, encouraging me and amazed at my effort of never backing down even after finishing last…but they eventually got tired of the little runner who couldn’t run and got sick when she lost, one class teacher broke it down to me ‘Kid, you cant run’I got good at concentrating, questioning myself, my weaknesses, my strengths, because for every damn time I lost I would go back and try see where I went wrong reassess myself while the winners were parading their trophies Anyone who has ever lost will tell u, there’s a magic in losing, it builds ur stamina, ur drive at one point you'r almost more ambitious, you have more to prove than the winner.Because a winner is most vulnerable right after finding out that they won Bruce Lee once said ( I heard this in a movie) -that to truly succeed you need to learn ‘the art of dying’ which I think means you can only understand the route to success if you understand the route to failure Losing is the best thing that can happen to you. Awards trophies are all nice, but do they really inspire you to succeed more than that kick to the ground? You're never too big to lose, when I was younger I never really understood how someone could work so hard and still lose, this was why I always cried. Everyone is so scared of losing that winning has become taboo.I went to school with a little self named baby genius, he was a cocky one…failure was not an option. I played chess with him once he let me win coz he thought I was wasting his time and he was hungry.. boy oh boy was I angry.‘Do you really think I’m that incapable of beating you that you let me win’ I felt insulted‘hey im just hungry and this is taking forever’ he saysLong story short I bought him a sandwich and we played for 2 more hours, I won.In exams he would cheat if he thought he was going to fail. And his cheating got worse too, I heard he got go expelled from his college for cheating, has the need to win got that vast that we have forgotten all about the competition? A psychology professor from Stanford University once said that kids respond positively to praise they enjoy it. But they collapse at the first experience of difficulty. Demoralized by their failure, they say they’d rather cheat than risk failing again.I was going to try cheating once, in college, it was a tough paper, me and study group decided…we’re not going to make it, so we did the unthinkable…we made a little mini sized book of all the possible questions and their answers…and some stupid fellow said Jackie should be the one to walk in with it, don’t let my bluff fool you…I am more chicken than the chicken itself…I talked my way out of it and my friend decided she would take it in…she’d done it before so she was confident…but I talked my way out of it because well, it wouldn’t feel like such a success if I passed the paper from cheating, my ego would never let me win, so i decided, heck...I'm flunking this paperWe walked into the exam room…and right before the question papers were handed the mini sized book fell…right in the middle of row…the professor walked by picked it up…asked the owner to step forward or he would mark the whole row zero. Silence. He asked twice, silence.‘Very well’ he said walking out with the answer sheets of the whole row…she was going to stand but then I did. I took one for the team…I think they called me Jesus the whole semester. I stood because, she had been caught cheating in about 4 cases and a 5th would mean her whole semester results would be canceled, and then here was me with a clean record, the good girl, the girl no professor would believe was capable of cheating, long story short I blamed it on the devil and talked my way out of it. 10 marks canceled off my coursework (that’s quite a lot) We’re all afraid to lose, and we’re afraid to lose because we feel the world would see us inadequate, sure if we lost in secrecy no one would mind, a little shattered egos here and there that could be fixed with wine but the public eye is poison, to our souls and to our minds. There’s nothing quite as terrible as the fear of failure. Conquer that fear. Accepting failure and allowing it to be our learning point, builds us We often forget that losing gives us an ability to overcome our setbacks. So next time u lose, sit back relax and better yourself, For u.Meanwhile this whole article is a result of losing a recent ‘thou shalt not be named’ trophy and Yes I am still crying about it, however I now realize that the world still moves and life is not all about a trophy awarded to you by a certain group of individuals who wear nice suits and speak 5 languages and smell really sexy, phooey----Sad I already reserved a corner for it in my bathroom. (the toughest decisions go down in there in the tub, from 'who should we vote for, what am I doing with my life and will mother approve of this man?'…so I reserve a lot of space for things that inspire me to keep me focused) PS; Losers have the best speeches don’t we?...

The Great Huangshan Loop
Date of hike: September 22, 2019
Country: China
Region: Huangshan
Trailhead: Xihai Hotel
Hike Destination: Same (loop trail)
Distance: 15 km (10 miles)
Elevation difference: ca. 900 m gain
Difficulty: Tough
I jokingly refer to 2019 as my “Huangshan year.” Indeed, I was lucky enough to go to China’s “Yellow Mountains”—Huangshan—no less than THREE times in one year, in three different seasons. In total, I have hiked Huangshan 5 times now, and from the accumulated experience of all those trips, one hike has emerged as the all-around, undisputed, greatest favorite. I am referring to the great loop from Xihai Hotel down to the bottom of the West Sea Grand Canyon, continuing down to Sanxi Bridge, and then climbing up on the other side of the canyon, via Fairy Walking Bridge, to BaiYuan hotel, and from there via Bright Peak and Flying Rock back to Xihai hotel. This is the mother of all loop hikes in the area, clocking in at 10 miles and involving close to 1000 meters in uphill climbing (as well as the same in descending) over steep and partly crumbling steps. But the best part of this hike—aside of the usual stunning scenery—is that it takes you away for hours from the insane crowds that make enjoying Huangshan not always easy! I had scouted out this route during my previous visit to Huangshan last May; but at that time I’d gone about it awkwardly, descending to the bottom along the regular trail, then taking the funicular up to the rim of the canyon, hiking up to Bright Peak, then reversing direction, and descending all the way back down to the bottom of the canyon, only to ascend the same steps I had taken down in the morning to go back to the canyon rim on the Xihai side, thus not completing the circle and also backtracking a significant portion of the route… a mess. So, here I was now with Liang, to do it right this time.
But before we tackled the great loop trail, we planned do some conventional sightseening in the wider Huangshan area. This involved returning to a scenic village called Hongcun where we had visited back in 2015. This is one of the insanely popular AAAAA tourist destinations in Anhui Province, a picturesque gem that is almost made unpicturesque by being so overrun by tourists. At our first visit, we had been too rushed to truly appreciate what the place had to offer. Liang invited her parents along for this trip, giving them the chance to experience those touristic hotspots and classics of the Chinese cultural heritage, which they’d not previously explored. We met up with Liang’s parents at the high-speed railway station in Huangshan City. From there, we took the public bus to Hongcun. This bus ride reminded me of how much China had changed in one generation. When I went to Huangshan for the first time, back in 1987, the buses were dilapidated, missing entire window panes, the gears grated, the road itself was potholed and not paved throughout, with stretches of unsecured dirt road beside a raging river or zig-zagging over dizzying abysses without guard rails, making it a rather hazardous experience. But now, we were sitting in an all-electric bus that silently glided over well-paved roads, equipped with USB outlets in the back of the seat. And there now was an elaborate safety protocol, and buckling in was mandatory. If you did not follow this safety precaution, a beeping sound would instantly alert you to not being buckled in. But although everybody was following instructions in that regard, there still was incessant beeping left and right: Turns out that as soon as you put a piece of luggage on a seat, the sensors embedded in the seat assume that somebody is sitting in it, and the alarm goes off. So, one by one, the passengers had to strap either pieces of luggage with the seatbelt to stop the annoying beeping. Talk about overdoing it. The scenic town of Hongcun had already been crowded with tourists when we first visited it in 2015, but four years later, the situation had become even more drastic. In addition to tourists, there were now literally thousands of students from all over China practicing painting and drawing, trying to master perspective and scene. Liang’s mom kept asking them where they came from. Turns out, these youngsters were from all over the nation--practically all provinces were represented among the participants of these artistic field trips. During our first pass through the town, under the eye of a hot sun glaring down from the cloudless sky, we could not quite connect with the town. Nothing really stood out, and the general feeling was of being underwhelmed. So, we returned to our hotel about a mile outside the village to spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing. Then, we all returned at dusk when the crowds had began to thin out; there was some breathing room now, and when we stumbled upon the large circular pond in the center of town, which we somehow managed to miss during the afternoon outing, we were quite enchanted by the scene, marveling at the clear reflection of the whitewashed buildings and bright red lanterns in the body of water.
Then we stopped at a tea shop and tasted the local specialties of green tea—including wild green tea—served by a chatty lady who was both knowledgeable and passionate about her product, and it began to be really fun. After purchasing a few bags of the local green tea varieties, we returned to the mirroring pond and sat down at a restaurant table for dinner, directly overlooking the whole scene. The next morning, we returned one more time to the town to watch the first sun rays caress the village and see the sky reflected in the outer pond.
When we had had our fill of this lovely scene, we return to the central pond, and this time we were fully convinced that the AAAAA rating of this town was well deserved. The scene was so picturesque that it really gave rise to the impression that one was stepping into a picture, a painting, a little piece of fairy landscape.
After a Chinese breakfast consisting of congee, steamed bread buns, and deliciously preserved raddish, we boarded the bus to Tangkou, setting off to the base of Huangshan.
After the usual formalities, which I had grown to know so well during my previous trips (i.e. the entrance ticket booth, the shuttle bus to the cable car station, the gondola ride to the top), we arrived on top of the mountain at 3 pm. The density of the crowds was beyond my expectations for late September, and so the walk to Xihai hotel was not the most pleasant. I thought it was a pity for Liang’s parents to have this particular introduction to the fabulous scene, with all the shuffling and squeezing and jockeying for position on lookouts, but I had forgotten that this was what they were likely used to at all the other tourist spots they had gone to. In order to get away from the crowds, which sometimes may seem impossible, you need to be a little ingenious as well as enterprising. For one thing, timing the outing to the very beginning and end of the day makes a difference because the day-trippers are gone by then; also, traveling in off-season (which here means the dead of winter) is a nice crowd-avoidance technique; but the best year-round crowd-dissolving strategy is doing something that requires greater than normal endurance and basically just means to hike away from the beaten tracks, something most Chinese tourists don’t do. Chinese tourist crowds are the embodiment of conformity: they will go to a particular lookout which is already overcrowded, only because it is “the” famous scene that people can reasonably be expected to recognize if shown a picture of it with you proudly posing in front of it; another lookout nearby goes almost unvisited simply because it does not have the official seal of approval and is not, therefore, “important,” although it may well offer even better views than the one validated by the “wisdom” of the crowd.
After our arrival at Xihai hotel, toward evening we ventured out to see the sunset. On a spot high above the valley ground, we huddled down in our hotel-supplied parkas (it had gotten very chilly) to wait for the moment of sunset. It was spectacular: the sun, which had been blocked by a layer of cloud, emerged from underneath that grey shield just before it touched the horizon, bathing the scenery in bright orange and yellow hues for a short space of time.
We had planned to begin our big hike, the Huangshan Grand-Canyon loop, early in the morning. But since it was cloudy and windy in the morning, we delayed the start of our 7-hour hike as long as we could, i.e. until noon. Finally, just as predicted by the forecast, the clouds began to disperse, and the sun came out just as we set out at 12 pm. As can be expected in the middle of the day, the steep steps down to the bottom of the ravine were pretty crowded now, and every once in a while people were bunched up at the steepest and narrowest portions. Still, we decided to just go with the flow and not be too anxious, which is the only recipe for enjoying the great scenery along this trail. The steps here twist down an almost vertical mountainside, and they are a true marvel of engineering, as they had to be built by hand. The steps here often protrude perpendicularly from vertical walls of rock, and it is hard to imagine how workers had installed the fastening bolts and poured the concrete, all the while suspended from ropes and working with hand-held tools. In addition to the challenging nature of the trail building, it is astonishing how much effort was lavished on details here: every once in a while, a tree would protrude from the platform on which one walked because rather than cutting it down, the engineers built the trail around the tree trunk; also, the railing on the side of the steps was made from concrete in a way that mimics wooden branches being intertwined, thus making for a seamless visual effect. The Chinese really do master the high art of extreme trail building. Now that we had exchanged a hiking mindset, properly speaking, with a leisurely sight-seeing mindset, we actually enjoyed the scenery, together with hundreds of fellow tourists. We beheld soaring walls of reddish rock, boulders impossibly balancing on tapering pillars, twisted umbrella pines dotting every geological protrusion in sight, while the occasional man-made structure, like a pavilion, provided just the right balance to complete an almost artistic composition of the landscape.
We arrived at the bottom of the canyon one hour after the start of our hike, and here I proudly took over as guide for the next, most demanding portion of the tour. We used the bathroom at the funicular station to change into lighter clothes (it was getting quite hot at the bottom of the ravine), and then, we struck out happily again, leaving the bustling crowds behind at the funicular station, while we had the trail all to ourselves. This next long stretch of trail sees very few hikers because it is basically a large detour that requires a high level of fitness and quite a bit of endurance to make it through. The original trail, leading directly up to the Fairy Walking Bridge along the near vertical wall of the canyon, had been destroyed by rockfalls. So, now instead of reaching the Fairy Walking Bridge in about one hour from the funicular, one has to detour at least three hours to get to the bridge by an indirect route, and hardly anybody is willing to do that. But for us, this was exactly where the fun began. We reached Sanxi Bridge, the lowest point of the hike, about 30 minutes later and here supplied our liquid reserves by buying a few more bottles of water. Then, after a short picnic, we set out on the serious portion of the trail: a few miles of steep uphill climb on steps with treads so narrow that even a number 7 size shoe does not fit on it, requiring one to walk upstairs at an angle so as to place the whole foot on the step. The raisers are often higher than the tread is deep, and the edges of the steps are frequently eroded, creating a slope rather than discretely molded steps. These difficulties of the trail were partly compensated for by the rails that were constructed all along it—indeed, I found welcome purchase to pull myself up with one hand, while the other arm was pushing the hiking pole for additional support. After a while of this, I almost entered a hypnotic state of slow, methodical, rhythmic movement: right foot, left foot, hand pulling, other hand pushing with pole….
Sweating profusely, we quickly gained altitude and soon saw the valley ground recede below us. We met only about two or three other hikers coming down toward us on this stretch (as well as, incongruously, one police officer stationed at a lonely outpost where he’d watch a handful of hikers pass all day). Approximately two hours later, we arrived at the Fairy Walking Bridge and shot a number of pictures there, as it was such a marvelous spot. The bridge is another triumph of Chinese trail building, as the path spans a deep chasm, beginning and ending in a tunnel dug through the rock. Standing on this bridge, one really feels like being part of a fantasy movie set.
After the Fairy Bridge, my most favorite part of the trail begins. Here the scenery turns from nice to awesome, both in terms of the charming details like a little fir tree that found a foothold of life in the midst of a smooth slab of rock, and in terms of the grand amphitheater of the West Sea Canyon that lay spread out in front of our eyes.
Straining our eyes, we could even see in the far distance the twisting line of the trail that we had descended to the canyon floor earlier. The trail now follows the knife edge of a long ridge, delicately perched between two valleys with great views on either side. Here also is the place where I had taken the picture last May that now hangs in Liang’s office. That picture is focused around a bright red wild azalea shrub growing on a narrow ledge in the rock. The new one is focused on another beauty.
When we arrived at Baiyun hotel, which is also the top station of the funicular, we were four and a half hours into the hike and started to feel a little tired. Also, truth be told, it felt strange to be back in the hustling and bustling crowds after having traversed a long stretch of pristine nature in almost complete silence and blessed solitude. At this point we decided to make a little detour: instead of heading directly to Bright Peak and thus making our way back home by the most direct, efficient way, we proceeded toward Turtle Peak, in the opposite direction of our loop. This was a good decision because the scenery subtly changed to reveal the yellowish, rounded boulder piles which are Lotus and Celestial peaks bathed in the late afternoon sunlight, truly a privileged view to behold.
The sun was sloping toward the horizon now, and we calculated that if we made our way home directly, we’d arrive at the sunset lookout place at about the right time. Bright Peak, which we reached about 40 minutes later, was bustling with people and echoing with blaring loudspeakers, and we did not dwell there. Instead, we headed toward Flying Rock to watch the sunset from that perch. We picked a spot just a few hundred meters above Flying Rock and had the pleasure of being only in the company of a group of birds that excitedly hopped around on the ground and flew back and forth, while the silence was broken only by the most beautiful bird song. The birds looked a bit like blue jays, except larger and with longer tails. The sun was slowly dipping into a blueish haze now, and as it did, it changed color to become a dim reddish disc, so that one could look directly into it. The whole view was framed by the descending skyline of a nearby ridge and encircled by branches of long-needled pine trees. Marvelous.
As soon as the sun hit the horizon, it got instantly chilly and the wind picked up. This was our signal to head down the last bit of trail and make our way quickly to Xihai in the remaining daylight, while the sky above us lit up in intense hues of orange-yellow afterglow. We arrived at the hotel at 6:30 pm, just in time for an early dinner that we were more than ready for.

It may be a hard thing to ask, but it is natural for people to be bias about anything. I think that KS anti-fans have the right to be against the theme on abuse in the manhwa. We don't know what really triggered them to believe in this, but the fact that we cannot fully put ourselves in their shoes cause us to think that we're right and they're stupid. I sometimes blamed myself for not fully understand their situation before passing judgement on their beliefs.
It’s natural for people to dislike things just as much as it’s natural for people to like things. But I disagree: people don’t have the right to be against the portrayal of a certain theme in fiction. No one has that right, that’s censorship and it’s something that actually takes away people’s rights.
You can dislike a thing, that’s okay: then spend your time giving attention to things you like, because you cannot change what you don’t like and what you disagree with. You can have conversations about it, but you should understand that you cannot control the world and things that you dislike will always exist and sometimes they even have the right to exist.
I do criticize anti-KS and antis in general, regardless of the personal reasons they have, because I don’t agree with their opinion and I don’t think their personal problems contribute to the discussion. I am sorry people went through abuse or other terrible experiences, but we cannot ban things because of 10 (or 100, or 1000) people’s personal problem with it. If you want to convince me KS doesn’t deserve to get published, sangbum should not be shipped, etc., you’ll have to give me objective arguments as to why that would be harmful and to whom and why the solution is banning a work of art, not personal reasons.
I don’t agree with antis’ opinion, but most of all I don’t agree with the way they use it to bully other people and I think the way they act and some ideas they support are harmful for people’s freedom of expression. I do understand that they think my opinion is the harmful one, but no one of them managed to change my mind so far. Actually I still haven’t read a good, worthy argument. Besides, all the people I know who actively criticize(d) antis don’t send them death threats and suicide baiting in their inbox, they (we) don’t fill the tags of antis’ favourite fandom with obnoxious hate toward characters, ships and actual people, they (we) don’t personally target and bully antis until they give up and close/remove content from their blogs. Most of us try to engage in reasonable discussions with arguments and sources supporting them, we try to share rational opinions and and don’t rely only the emotional impact of our words (“I was abused so I must be right!” “I’m having a panic attack and you dare argue with me?”). And if someone who shares our point of view did this, well I personally don’t approve of their behaviour and I would probably kindly ask them to stop, but that’s certainly not a wide phenomenon such as “antis”.
I understand we should always put ourselves in the other person’s shoes, but at the same time I can still disagree and argue with them even if I do that. I’ll tell you more: if I think someone’s stupid, I don’t argue with them. Because they’re stupid. And every time I replied to an anti, I did it because I assumed a discussion with them was possible, therefore I was assuming they were not stupid. Also, I want to add another little thing: judging someone’s ideas is legitimate and there’s nothing wrong about it. Once you know an opinion, you will judge it. That doesn’t mean you’ll judge everyone who has that opinion. You can say “that opinion is wrong”, but that doesn’t mean you think that person is inherently wrong because they have that opinion. They might have a whole lot of other opinions with which you agree. I can tell the difference between disagreeing with a single opinion and disliking/bashing/bullying a person.
So, I understand where you come from, Anon, but on most of your points I don’t exactly agree. You seem to have a very peaceful attitude, though, and that’s a very nice thing to have.
