If Primarchs Had Spotify: Lion 'El Jonson Edition
Music that The Lion would do paperwork to, read or perhaps even dissociate to. He definitely took these from shows and movies he has seen due his brothers giving him exposure (he has definitely been influenced). He gives a 'pick and choose' vibe.
Note: This is not a representation of themselves, but what I think they'd like in normal human music

Flashback: 'Swing The Mood' - Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers
14th October 2024
Eight straight weeks at the top for 'Die With A Smile'! Crazy. This means we'll flashback thirty-five years to 1989 when the #1 song was 'Swing The Mood' by Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers, whoever the hell they are?! I've genuinely never heard of this one before, and it's kind of giving novelty song vibes. I mean, just look at this album cover:
What on earth is going on here? Is this the 80's version of Crazy Frog? Let's take a listen.
youtube
Okay, so it's basically just a medley of old songs. And it's not even that good? I'm honestly a little flabbergasted that something this derivative got to #1 (in 13 different countries!!), but then again so did Crazy Frog. Jive Bunny is not quite as annoying as Crazy Frog was, but he still kinda sucks. And is also very visually unappealing.
The people behind Jive Bunny are a bunch of DJs which makes sense considering that 'Swing The Mood' is essentially just a DJ mix. Although you'd think it would be... I dunno... slightly catchier? The songs sampled are all pretty good in their own right, but when combined into 'Swing The Mood' it's just not doing much for me.
The songs appearing in 'Swing The Mood' are mostly from the 50's and although the NZ charts don't go back that far, you can pretty safely assume that if they did, several of these songs would have been #1's, so in a way it's nice that they sort of became #1's through this. We've got 'Rock Around the Clock' and 'Shake Rattle and Roll' both by Bill Haley and His Comets; 'Tutti Frutti' by Little Richard; The Everly Brothers' 'Wake Up Little Susie'; Elvis Presley's 'Hound Dog', 'Shook Up', and 'Jailhouse Rock'; and 'At The Hop' by Danny and the Juniors.
All fun songs, but somehow combined into one by this stupid ass Jive Bunny they leave me cold.
See you next week when we'll see if anybody can manage to topple Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars from their throne at the top of the charts.

Upon a recent visit to relatives in Rugby, (relatively close to Oxford) I had the great pleasure of catching a wonderful singing duo called The Weeping Willows! It was at a cool venue in Leamington Spa called Temperance Cafe, Arts & Events, what a night! First off, this couple from Australia had a terrific sound & vibe! Think of a Sun Records, Everly Brothers, Chris Issack Gothic mash up! While I'm posting a cover here, they certainly had terrific tunes of their own, great song writers, check 'em out on Spotify! I really hope I get to see them over in the states! Lastly, the venue was cozy and comfortable with good acoustics, very clear, yet warm. Nicely done folks.

The Joestars Goes to Karaoke
Jojo part 1-6
Disclaimer: This is based on how I see the Jojos
Jonathan Joestar
Jonathan is very good at singing
He is the type to sing old songs (especially old love songs)
He is not restricted to only old songs, but he only interested in a few new songs
Calm and put his soul into his voice when he sings
Might be the best singer when compared to the other Jojos
Song examples:
Matt Monro - Walk Away
Frank Sinatra - My Way
The Everly Brothers - Let It Be Me
Lobo - How Can I Tell Her
Michael Buble - Love You Anymore
Joseph Joestar
Joseph will be the loudest
He will sing carelessly, just following his heart’s content
Rock, ballad, pop? He does not care about the genre as long as he can scream all he wants
Often get yelled by the others
Dance, definitely dance or at least make weird poses while singing
Song Examples:
The Beatles - Twist and Shout
Queen - Don’t Stop Me Now
The Jacksons - I Want You Back
Maroon 5 - Sugar
Bruno Mars - The Lazy Song
(Basically almost any songs :/)
Kujo Jotaro
Jotaro will be the most quiet one
Only sing when he’s forced/drunk
You thought he will be very bad at singing?
He’s shockingly very good at controlling his voice
Good at singing both songs with low or high vocal range
But hey, I keep imagine those yare yare deep voice in singing mode :’D
Song Examples:
Oasis - Don’t Look Back in Anger
Elvis Presley - Can’t Help Falling in Love
Tamia - Officially Missing You
Sam Smith - I’m Not The Only One
Higashikata Josuke
Josuke will feel shy at first
Then as the time pass by, he will get more and more confident in singing in front of everyone
He mostly sings happy fun songs
He would join Jonathan singing old songs or join Joseph to scream all he wants when he’s in the mood
Sometimes dance or make weird poses too like Joseph
Song Examples:
Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way
Billy Joel - Uptown Girl
Whiteney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody
Mark Ronson - Uptown Funk
Charlie Puth - Left Right Left
Giorno Giovanna
Giorno can be considered as a support
He will play tambourine or maracas to enliven the atmosphere
But when the time comes, he will sings wholeheartedly
He might be the second best after Jonathan
He is also into old songs like Jonathan, but he also open to the current music industry
Most of his songs are sad songs or songs with pretty slow tempo just because he can vibe more into sad songs
Song Examples:
Carpenters - I Won’t Last A Day Without You
The Beatles - Yesterday
Ed Sheeran - U.N.I
Shawn Mendes - Never Be Alone
David Choi - Together
Kujo Jolyne
Jolyne will be the emo singer
The second loudest after Joseph
Sometimes a good singing partner for Joseph
Also often get yelled by the others
Song Examples:
My Chemical Romance - Dead
Green Day - American Idiot
Queen - We Will Rock You
Scorpions - Still Loving You

All That Jazz (1979)
I love that I’m getting a feel for the work of different directors over the course of this film-watching endeavor. Very interesting.
“On Broadway” is so nostalgic for me. Our marching band played this at pep rallies and in the stands. I love it.
People make weird as hell faces when they’re singing. These close-ups remind me of trying not to cringe when Lea Michele sings. Meanwhile, the dancing montage is reminding me of A Chorus Line vibes.
This dude is such an emotionally abusive twat. I don’t like him.
OMFG!!!! WALLACE SHAWN IS IN THIS! I mean, he’s an assistant dude and only has one line, but I love that!
I didn’t expect this movie to exercise my brain so much. I’m not complaining, though. I’m definitely enjoying it.
This final musical number is amazing. Why is he singing Everly Brothers? I mean, okay, but... why? I mean, I suppose why not? Weird as hell movie.
I - what!? What am I even watching? Why do I kind of like it?
ESE: 85/100
50 +5 for the Chorus Line vibes +5 for the nod to Lenny Bruce +10 for titties -5 for Joe Gideon +5 for honesty +10 for orgy interpretive dance +5 for Kate and Michelle’s dance +5 for the balloon rating system +2 for surprise Wallace Shawn -5 for dead white face, orange body -5 for incompetent hospital staff +5 for that booty, tho +3 for weird Everly Brothers cover -5 for bizarre anatomy costumes

✧・゚ the quarantine-only oc project
This here’s for @yourlovingspy after they came up with this magnificent idea !! The rules are simple: This temporary OC was made from scratch, using this post and will only be played during the pandemic to brighten up our mood, as we’re stuck in self-isolation. When everything’s over, it’s over.
First off; I couldn’t find a suiting FC so I’ll just go without one for now.
Name: Christian ‘ Kit ‘ Elliott Height: 1,73 m (( short but fierce in his words )) Body Type: Very slender. defined arms Looks: chiseled jawline, friendly dark-grey eyes. half-long hair; dark undercut. dyes his hair - A. LOT. would be referred to as cute or pretty rather than classically handsome by others. Song: Pumped up kicks by Foster The People (( I went with the vibe, not the lyrics 😅 ))
Kit is a very laid-back, fun-loving and loyal boy with a generally positive attitude. He’s that kind of a guy who’d drive you everywhere if you just asked and who sings along to all the songs on the radio, even the ones he doesn’t know. He got raised by a single mother of three and has two younger sisters; the youngest being 13 and the other 15 years old. The neighborhood he grew up in was your typical working class and with their father always in and out of their lives, struggling with the alimony, the Elliott kids didn’t have access to the latest things. Their mother was well-liked and would receive second-hand-clothing from other families. Kit will wear anything he can get his hands on; if he likes it he calls dibbs on it.
Most of his shirts are usually bleached out from the long-term use, but even after he started to work at a local gas-station, he still seems to only own ripped jeans. Not because he couldn’t afford something else, but because he likes it. He dyes his naturally brown hair a lot but since he does it on his own, it always turns out kinda sloppy. It all started when he found a newspaper advertisement where hairdresser apprentices were looking for models to practice on in change for money. His mom didn’t approve of his whims since he always had a lot of them, but got used to it. Others would describe him as a teasing, little (non-malicious) trouble-maker who was always up for the next adventure with his best friend. Kit had always been a people-pleaser and an opportunist. He’d avoid drama but if confronted, would always fight back and also say shit he wouldn’t mean. He does have his morals but will always look for a loophole in order to get what he wants without heavily violating them.
He’s into abandoned places, slack-lining and music and has a habit of shoplifting. For an example, he’d always take stuff like nail polish for his sisters (( that he’d use himself as well )). Before the world started to end he frankly had no idea what he wanted in life. He was a smart kid in school - smart but lazy, didn’t take it seriously and had other priorities like hanging out with his mate or day-dreaming. College wasn’t a real option, money- and grade-wise, and scholarships were off the table since he missed the opportunities to qualify.
THE NPC: Her name is Ruth Doyle and she’s a woman in her late 30ies from Kit’s neighborhood. She was inspired by Down in the Willow-Garden by The Everly Brothers and her and Kit’s relationship song was Lost Continent by The Comsat Angels. She’s a very melancholic woman, has a heavy and hurt heart but a gentle soul. During long and warm summer evenings Kit would hang out with her on her front porch. She’s one of the few people Kit knows who ever told him that they liked his hair, what was the main reason why he took a liking on the woman. She was new in the neighborhood and people would talk about her, especially since her and Kit would spend time with each other. Kit’s mother accused her of getting him into smoking but little did she knew that he already did that before he met Ruth. With her he just dared to do it in front of everyone’s eyes. And oh, they’d smoke a lot during those evenings.
She seemed to go through quite a lot what was the reason why she moved here at all. Kit, a sensible soul, sensed that she was lonely. She’d work at odd hours and would never let him in on what she did, but he’d always pick up (( or snatch )) stuff for her at the stores or help her carry things from her car to her door. But she never asked him to come in. Kit considers her a real lady and more real than the people around them. They share the same kind of humor and she once told him that he was a total keeper.

Babygeddon Name Predictions
JoKen2 - girl
Sibling: Garrett David
Style guess: Feminine, classic, sweet. Nothing too modern/trendy, but also nothing very stylish or surprising. I'd guess Olivia for them, if it weren't her sister.
Name guesses: Lucy, Katelyn, Claire, Elise, Lillian, Amelia, Molly
JoyStin2 - unknown sex
Sibling: Gideon Martyn
Style guess: I think Joy on her own would go super trendy, like Blakely or Kinsley. She'd probably even go unisex like Payton or Kameron, if she weren't so fundie. But I don't think Austin would go for it, unless he really DGAF about girl names. For a boy I think they'll do another semi-uncommon Old Testament.
Name guesses: Leah, Esther, Lydia, Grace, Margaret "Maggie" / Ezekiel, Asher, Solomon, Abram, Isaiah
SiRen1 - girl
Sibling: Asa 👼
Style guess: Hard to say whether they would have used super-old-school, Biblical Asa if their first pregnancy had made it. I think their girl pick will be either Biblical or meaningful. Probably stylish, maybe vintage.
Name guesses: Iris, Thea, Hope, Ruth, Luna, Ada (cringe, but I wouldn't put it past them)
M6 - girl
Siblings: Mackynzie Renee, Michael James, Marcus Anthony, Meredith Grace, Mason Garrett
Style guess: Anything M. I wish they'd go Maeve or Margot, but it's probably going to be very tame and mainstream. Not stylish but not too dated. Lots of predictions that they'll honor Grandma Mary, but I hope they don't use straight Mary. I've included some Mary-nicknames in my guesses, but I'm not sure they're smart enough to connect them.
Name guesses: Molly, Madelyn, Mia, Maya, Maisie, Marissa
BatesPerkins3 - unknown sex
Siblings: Bradley Gilvin, Kaci Lynn
Style guess: This is an odd one. Bradley is so formal and Kaci is so... not. But they're linked by being super 70s/80s to me. I get a very southern/rural vibe from the set. So it will probably be traditional for boys and cutesy for girls, but kinda dated either way.
Name guesses: Shelby, Faith, Kaylee, Rylee, Carli / Ashton, Dustin, Wesley, Travis, Cody
BatesPaine4 - unknown sex
Siblings: Charles Stephen IV "Carson," Brooklyn Elise, Everly Hope
Style guess: 100% pop trendy. Slightly more modern than her brother's set, above. Maybe a little less cutesy for girls. If her sister weren't Addee, I'd guess Adelyn, Addison etc.
Name guesses: Skylar, Lyla, Aria, Kylie, Kinsley / Hayden, Sawyer, Logan, Liam, Wyatt

Needtobreathe: a band of brothers
By L. Kent Wolgamott
HOW DO you follow up a chart-topping, critically acclaimed, synth-infused album?
If you’re Needtobreathe, you put out a rootsy, soulful, four-song EP, recorded old-school style — nearly live to tape.
To do that, singer-keyboardist Bear Rinehart, his lead guitarist brother Bo and rest of the band left the comforts of their South Carolina home studios for Nile City Sound, the Fort Worth, Texas studio where soul singer Leon Bridges made his Grammy-nominated debut album “Coming Home.”
“We met these guys who did the Leon Bridges record down there and just got intrigued by it,” Bear Rinehart said. “We do a lot of our recording ourselves or at least co-producing. This was something we wanted to try. We were liking the early ‘60s soul vibe. We had been throwing off some Isaac Hayes references. So we said, ‘Let’s go down there for 10 days and see what happens.’”
What happened was a fast-moving session in which overdubs and meticulous note-by-note production were kept to a minimum.
“The vibe was right to record live,” Rinehart said. “The record’s very much that way. A couple songs we did live, it was one or two takes of a song, which is pretty crazy for us. We usually take a year to make a record. My favorite bands live play stuff fast. That’s what we were doing in the studio. We did a good job of keeping that live vibe.”
The sessions, which were intended as an experiment, became “Forever On Your Side (Niles City Sound Sessions),” the four-song EP the band decided to release earlier this year.
“We ended up cutting seven songs,” Rinehart said. “We thought, ‘This could be half a record or we can take the ones we like and put it out now.’ It’s the fastest turnaround we’ve ever had.”
Now those songs are making appearances in Needtobreathe’s live shows.
“The title cut, that song could have been on any record that we’ve made,” Rinehart said. “(Folk duo) Johnnyswim guested on the song and they’re out with us on the tour. They’re doing it live with us. It’s cool.
“This is the biggest show we’ve ever taken out in terms of production and the biggest crowds we’ve ever played to,” Rinehart said of the tour. “It’s going great. The first shows, you’re worried somebody will set themselves on fire or something. We got through those and now it’s really going good.”
The show also includes some songs that are included on Needtobreathe’s new live album. But they won’t sound the same as they do on “Acoustic Live, Vol. 1” which was released in November.
“For 10 years, we’ve been asking the agent to book us an acoustic tour, but the timing was never right,” Rinehart said. “We were getting bigger and they wanted us to play the bigger places, to play the electric rock show. Last year, we finally got to go out and do some acoustic dates.
“It was a blast. I knew after the first night it was going to be a record. It was so different and weird from what we usually do, I knew we had to put it out for the people who weren’t able to get to the shows,” he said.
“Acoustic Live, Vol. 1” is Needtobreathe’s second live album to go along with six studio records and the EP. Those recordings have been markers in the band’s career.
“We’re a 15-year overnight success,” Rinehart said. “When people ask what the turning point was, every little bit helps. It’s hard to keep the band together.”
That’s particularly true when it’s a literal band of brothers — see The Kinks, Oasis and even The Everly Brothers.
But Bear and his younger brother Bo have kept it together for two decades, since they started performing together as high school kids.
“It’s been a roller coaster ride,” Rinehart said of being in a band with Bo. “We’re a lot better at it now. Both of us have families, that seems to tone things down a little bit. And, with the band, we realized that every show isn’t make-or-break, that there isn’t one thing that is make-or-break.”
The Rinehart brothers were raised in Possum Kingdom, S.C. before moving to Seneca, where they played together at coffee houses at Furman University.
There, Bear joined the Furman Paladins as a wide receiver and won the 2002 Banks McFadden trophy for South Carolina football player of the year.
Not surprisingly, Rinehart said one of the best things about being in Needtobreathe is that he’s become friends with athletes from across the country. And he and Bo remain big sports fans
“College football’s the thing,” he said. “Me and Bo were named after Bear Bryant, so we were in it from the start. We didn’t really have much choice.”
The Rineharts, who are sons of a pastor, put together Needtobreathe after Bear graduated from Furman, taking the band name from a Socratic teaching. After a pair of independent releases, Needtobreathe was signed to Atlantic Records and released its major-label debut in 2006.
Simultaneously with its release, NeedToBreathe was on the cover of “CCM” magazine, the leading contemporary Christian music publication. And the band has won 10 Gospel Music Association Dove Awards for song, album and group of the year and got a 2015 Grammy nomination for Contemporary Christian Music Performance for the song “Multiplied.”
But Needtobreathe has consistently avoided the “Christian music” label, calling itself a rock band and largely being seen as that by the music industry and fans.
“Nobody wants to be labeled something,” Rinehart said. “I think about the Tom Petty story. When his first record came out they called it new wave. He said, ‘What’s new wave? We play rock “n” roll.’ ... Our first record came out and they called it emo. We were like, ‘Huh?’”
That said, there is a spiritual component to the band’s music, designed to touch those who hear it, Rinehart said.
“In our lyrics the only thing we really try to do is tell the story of what we’re going through. If I was being honest, a lot of the time, we don’t know how the story ends. I think that’s what draws people to it,” Rinehart said. “It never made sense for us to be the party soundtrack. If we were going to do this, it ought to have some sort of purpose.”

Hi lovely! Could I have a ship please? I’m 20, English, 6”1. I work in a pet shop that mostly has birds and reptiles etc. Red hair, blue eyes (you can probs tell from my picture anyway 😂) I love old rock music and I love love and positivity. But yeah, thank you very much! Congrats on 200 that’s amazing 👍☺️💗🌷 xx
Are you sure English love affair isn’t about you, love? Because I think the boys would love you. Anywho, I’m shipping you with Ashton because you both love love and strive to be positive. Ashton needs someone with a similar outlook as him and you definitely vibe with him.
He’d probably tell you he loves you in his car. He’d had something sweet and slow on the radio (I’m thinking Everly Brothers or maybe the Supremes) and he’d look over at you because he loved doing that. You’d be there, so present in his life that the words would just tumble from his lips followed by his giggle because he’s just so happy.

Q&A: Adult Karate Channels His Difficult Past Into Cathartic Electronic Music
Photos: Natalie Arriola
Los Angeles-based artist Adult Karate, born K.C. Maloney, is really pushing boundaries and thinking outside the box. In a desire to expand his repertoire, Maloney fuses 80’s pop, post-rock, and dark underground dance music to craft a distinctive sound that greatly sets him apart from the rest. The title track of his forthcoming album Del Mar is definitely a standout hit. Its soothing electronic beat and deep, expressive lyrics transport you to a sea of emotions. Touching on difficult past events, Adult Karate is not afraid to bare it all and that ability to show so much strength truly resonates throughout Del Mar, leaving a lasting impact on every listener. In interviewing Adult Karate I got to dive deeper into the mind of Maloney and discover what truly makes his music so powerful.
youtube
OTW: How has it been having to reface the raw emotions of your difficult past experiences, and how has that inspired you lyrically?
Maloney: It may sound like a bit of a cliche, but revisiting the past through the songs I write is incredibly therapeutic. I'm not perfect by any means, so even if most of those dark times are over, there's still some leftover baggage that needs to be dealt with. So there can be a lot of fear, guilt, and frustration when opening up those old wounds. But the goal is to heal those wounds for good. And writing about it has proven to be a great way to do that. For me, at least.
OTW: What has it been like experimenting with different genres and is there one specific style you are drawn to the most?
Maloney: I love experimenting with different genres, but I hope it's not a love that will eventually destroy me. I listen to so much different music, from 1950's country music to house music to krautrock to hip-hop to noise, and it's all so inspiring to me. So moving around with genres is not something that is planned, it's just how it comes out and it's entirely dependent on my mood that particular day. I might start with a weird sample that I mangle and off that vibe, it will turn into something completely out of left field. But I always try to go with it and not force it into a particular genre. Although, I'd say all my stuff fits somewhere under the umbrella of “electronic music.” In the end, I think it comes down to what excites me. Right now I'm working on a group of songs inspired by 1950's pop music; kinda sounds like The Everly Brothers meets the Pixies. Or something like that. So that's the sound I'm drawn to at the moment. Don't know if that will materialize under the Adult Karate name or maybe something else.
OTW: What is meaning behind the name Adult Karate and what made you decide on the title Del Mar?
Maloney: There's not really any meaning behind the name Adult Karate. I picked it because so many bands a few years ago had all these very serious or cool sounding names. You know, with extra letters that don't belong or V's instead of U's. Adult Karate sounded kinda dumb, so I went with it. I came up with the name after I saw a dude (an adult) in full karate outfit walking into a karate studio and I thought the name was funny. I called the album Del Mar after the street Del Mar Avenue in Rosemead, CA. It was a street that was always a central figure in some of my darkest times. I also like it because it translates to “from the sea,” a phrase which can be quaint and nice or terrifying depending on how you choose to look at it.
OTW: Who are some of your biggest musical influences and how have they shaped you as an artist?
Maloney: My influences are always changing. But the mainstays since childhood would be bands and artists like Depeche Mode, Slint, INXS, Elliott Smith, Beck, Aphex Twin, Orbital, The Cure, various house and techno music. Right now I'm listening to a lot of old country music. People like Don Gibson, Faron Young, and Patsy Cline. I love those heartbreaking songs set to the happiest sounding music. Also that new Rich Brian album and Kendrick's DAMN. are both constantly in rotation at the moment. I guess because my influences are all over the place, they've kept me from sticking with one particular style for too long, which I hope is a good thing!
OTW: In your photo the color around your left eye looks like you've been punched in the face, is there any significance behind that?
Maloney: Yes, there's a sizable significance behind that. I went to strict, Catholic schools until 12th grade and I was in the closet the whole time. And it was terrible. Sometimes it seemed like being gay was the worst thing you could possibly be in that environment. I've since come out of the closet to all my friends and family and my life has improved immensely. But hiding my sexuality for most of my life was difficult and left me with some emotional scars and bruises; emotional scars and bruises that I am still ashamed of. I guess I feel like I should have been stronger. Like I shouldn't have allowed it all to affect me the way it did. But it did. I still carry those scars and bruises around with me. When I'm out in public with my husband there is always a background fear of someone coming up and fucking with us because we're a gay couple. And I hate that. I hate that I can't just go walk down to the store, holding my husband's hand without having to worry about prejudice. So the black-eye thing is my way of expressing that I guess: that I still carry around that fear every day and I wish I didn't. And it's something that all LGBT folks can relate to on some level I think.

We Asked 10 Brewers: What Music Is Playing in the Brewhouse?
Music is omnipresent. It accompanies us on morning commutes, on windows-down drives through the countryside, and through air travel over oceans. It provides the soundtrack to great parties, bad breakups, days in, and nights out. More than just a tangible stimulus, music affects our moods — and our beer.
In many professions, music can play an integral role. At breweries, it can inspire creativity; alleviate the monotony and loneliness of an overnight shift; or give taproom patrons a sense of a brewery’s identity or vibe.
With that in mind, we asked 10 brewers what tunes they’re playing in the brewhouse or taproom.
“We’ve been on an angsty Irish and British punk/post-punk kick. One of the best shows I’ve ever been to was Fontaines D.C. with IDLES earlier this year, and both have earned regular spots in the rotation since. Going down the Irish punk rabbit hole in particular recently has brought the likes of Silverbacks, Just Mustard, and the Murder Capital to name a few. There’s something about depressing music that reminds me that our jobs are usually pretty fun.” — Joe Connolly, Director, Springdale Beer, Framingham, MA
“We have a steady flow of ska music that plays as our brewhouse soundtrack, usually infused with reggae, punk rock, and some rockabilly, too. We’ve listened to a lot of Rancid throwbacks this year especially.” — Kurt Randall, Head Brewer, Ska Brewing, Durango, CO
“My dad, Papa Ron, works a lot in the brewery before we open and plays ‘60s and ‘70s country jams, so you hear a lot of the Everly Brothers and Johnny Cash. During taproom hours, expect a heavy rotation of Drive-By Truckers, Chatham County Line, Chris Stapleton, Shovels & Rope and the likes. We even made a Spotify playlist so our customers can daydream they’re in the taproom while they’re really just at work. We primarily choose Americana, country, bluegrass, etc., because this is the music myself and my brother, another co-owner of Seedstock, grew up with. It’s in our blood and in our beer. This straightforward craftsmanship of Americana music inspires us to create straightforward beer for the hardworking folk.” — Jason Abbott, Brewer, Seedstock, Denver, CO
“Music in the warehouse is always very interesting. Our employees don’t wear headphones for safety reasons, so we have a large speaker in the center of the warehouse that can be heard from all corners. But some of them also have individual speakers in their stations. Walking around, you can hear a wide range of music. For instance, this morning Stevie Wonder is playing over the loudspeaker, but I also heard some GoldLink (underground hip hop) and Amy Winehouse, all in my morning walk-through.” —Heather Franchini, Production Coordinator, Belching Beaver, San Diego, CA
“Morning mash in [is] William Basinski’s ‘Watermusic.’ Phish, Jerry Garcia Band, Four Tet, Erykah Badu are on heavy rotation. Droning (mashing) out is Sleep (a ‘stoner metal band’). But the best tunes are when we shut off the Sonos, open the garage bay, and delve into the deep forest cuts of our home in Newcastle.” —Tyler “T2” Silvde, Brewer, Oxbow Brewing, Newcastle, ME
“Tool, Grateful Dead, Poolside, down tempo beats and most importantly, funk! Looking at what I listened to today I’ve got The Cactus Channel, Run the Jewels, Stephan Bodzin, Bonobo, Dave Brubeck Quartet, and Fela Kuti in heavy rotation. I mix it up quite a bit, but that’s a pretty good cross section. Some funk, jazz, Afrobeat, hip-hop, down tempo, blues, and techno are bound to be on the playlist. Gotta change up the music at least as often as the tap board.” — Allen Anderson, Lead Brewer, Station 26 Brewing Co., Denver, CO
“With two teams, one in each location (San Diego and Bell), our brewers at each location have varying tastes in music. [Our] Bell location [shares] the sound system with front of house, [so] our brewers only get to choose their jams for the mornings, and it usually consists of classic rock legends like Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Cream, Heroes del Silencio; or hip-hop’s greatest like 2Pac, Biggie, E40, Mac Dre, Kendrick Lamar… anything that gets the heart pumping and the blood flowing to start the day off right is what they enjoy the most. Front of house usually changes it up to either some rock en español, cumbia, or Latin jazz. — Steven Terán, Production Manager/Head of Education, Border X Brewing, San Diego, CA
“Brewing music doesn’t have to be loud and fast, but it has to have intensity. We listen to a lot of indie/psych rock: LCD Soundsystem, Ty Segall, Khruangbin, TV on the Radio, The Growlers, Kikagaku Moyo, Parquet Courts, The Modern Lovers, Pixies, Built to Spill, Dead Milkmen. Bottling days are pretty nerdy: Weird Al & They Might be Giants. Fridays are ‘Fela Fridays’: Fela Kuti, William Onyeabor, and the Spotify Afrobeat station. Songwriters: Bonnie Prince Billy, Andrew Bird, Elliot Smith. Ridiculous bands that are undeniably catchy: Rush, AC/DC, Van Halen, and Hall & Oates. Hip-hop: Jurassic 5, Tribe, Outkast, and The Fugees.” — Sean White, Head Brewer & Founder, Little Fish Brewing Company, Athens, OH
“[For] our production team of six, the top bands and genres are: The Slackers, Modest Mouse, Phish, Rihanna, TV on the Radio, and New Orleans Brass.” — Christian Koch, Head Brewer, Elevation Beer Company, Poncha Springs, CO
“I have a reputation for not listening to anything in the brewery! But that is false, as I only play music while alone to save my work mates from my ‘70s and ‘80s punk and hardcore preferences: Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Naked Raygun, Buzzcocks, Stiff Little Fingers. [Yeah], I’m old and I need something uptempo to get me through a brew day. If my coworkers are around, it switches to ‘80s and ‘90s indie rock: Pavement, Dinosaur Jr., Archers of Loaf, Replacements, Husker Du, Red Red Meat. We name many beers after songs from these bands. Also, jam bands are forbidden, forever, always.” — Chris Lohring, Owner, Notch Brewing, Salem, MA
