Criminal Minds

My rating (1-10): 7.9, its incredibly enjoyable, frequently silly, often kind of awful. a great combination.

My favourite character: Emily, which could not be more obvious w/ my url but i also love reid almost as much

My least favourite character: Gideon annoyed me a little on this last rewatch, which is a way more negative reaction than I've ever had to any of the other mains. Ashley Seaver SUCKED so fucking bad but she wasn't around long enough to be relevant to this question lol

The character I think I'd be friends with: JJ and Morgan, they've both got a sarcastic teasing streak that I really vibe with

The character I think I won't hit off with: Gideon.

My favourite episode/scene: Man. That's hard, there are so many good ones. The one that kind of lives rent free in my brain is Uncanny Valley (the doll one), and that speech that Reid gives to Riker in that episode is one of the banger scenes of all time.

Whose clothing style I like best: Reid, I love how much he loves that purple scarf

Times I watched it (and if I would again): I've never actually watched all 15 seasons all the way through! I used to watch it when I was in high school and early college, just whenever I saw that it was on TV, so I didn't get through it linearly until this latest rewatch, and even in this rewatch I only got to the later half of season 9 and then kind of fell off lol. But yeah I'd totally watch the early/mid seasons again.

Peaky Blinders

My rating (1-10): 9.2, extremely aesthetic, dialogue to die for, unfathomably fucked up. very much my shit

My favourite character: Ada!!!!!

My least favourite character: John I guess? I've definitely forgotten that he existed at some points lol

The character I think I'd be friends with: Lizzie probably

The character I think I won't hit off with: Arthur, for me he is best loved from a distance lol

My favourite episode/scene: I don't know about episode specifically, but the scene in season 5 episode 4 where Tommy shows up to Ada's house and rambles his way through a mental breakdown at her is honestly one of the best scenes in Anything

Whose clothing style I like best: Ada season 2/3/4

Times I watched it (and if I would again): Only once, and I honestly don't know if I could handle watching it again. It took so long for me to get through season 6 - the bleak darkness of it was truly on the edge of being too much. Which is where I like to be taken, don't get me wrong, it's just that I don't know if I want to necessarily subject myself to the whole thing again lol

Which episode / whenabouts was this? I'm trying to remember when a scene like that would have happened but coming up empty.

in the second episode of season 2, after arthur kills the boy in the boxing ring. when tommy goes to talk to him about it arthur gets angry that Tommy tells him to shut the door [on the war] like Tommy did. Arthur abruptly shoots up from the chair and grabbing him near the neck shoves him against the fireplace pretty violently, then grabs at his face. These aren't gifs so don't quite convey the struggle (Tommy mostly just hangs on and attempts not to escalate things) but Arthur does attack him here.

9. Most disliked character(s)? Why?

Gina, I think she's boring lol. And I usually like Anya Taylor Joy but I really dislike her performance in this show. It never coheres into a real character for me. Part of that is the writing, probably, but other actors on this show have done more with less.

10. Most disliked arc? Why?

I don't particularly enjoy how Michael was handled in seasons 5/6.

16. If you could change anything in the show, what would you change?

I'll go for the easy answer and say I wish Helen had lived. I also wasn't the biggest fan of Grace's scenes in season 2. They didn't feel very much like the Grace I remembered loving in season 1. I'd like to give her a bit more to do in that season besides getting knocked up

@vertigosuite - oh that's lovely. I remember noting Tommy frequently pushes people away from Arthur so he can offer the care. He does it to Ada and Polly in S1 as well after Arthur's been tortured by Campbell.

The Arthur-Tommy pushing Ada scene particularly struck me in S1, because it's a scene where Tommy puts himself 'centre stage' / position of power, notwithstanding what he was doing being a healing/medic/carer action. (The note I wrote at the time was "no one touches my bloody brother / I can tend him better.") By contrast, there's so many other scenes in S1 where ostensibly they're having a family meeting or strategy discussion where Tommy, Leader, should technically be standing in a position of power/head of table/dominate room as he does in later seasons, but instead he often stands behind everyone else, against a wall not in the centre; he continues to Lead (speak/question/demand/decide) but everyone often has to turn awkwardly to speak to him over their shoulders.

In one of those writer-equivalents of ‘redo the drawing/art 1 year on’ exercises, the two fics I’d rewrite (this won’t happen BTW it’s just me thinking) and why/what to improve are:

-melting point of gold. I was trying really hard to show Tommy slipping through time back into traumatic past events as a trauma response to Ruby’s death, a breaking down of all his walls and barriers in his mind such that he couldn’t anchor himself in this time where his daughter is dead. But, couldn’t get a smooth narrative voice established. (I still find it difficult to re-read so would want to improve that.) it originally included a lot *more* going back into the past (and his mother, and his caretaking) than I left in the end. It also included a phone call with Ada which goes wrong because she keeps wanting more explicit direction from Tommy, and also a phone call telling Arthur the news about Ruby which goes terribly wrong because of Arthur’s addiction and his manipulation by Mosley, triggering a deep segue into the past trauma and particularly his mother and Romani context as a consequence, as well as one about John and the nuns. I just couldn’t get the intent and flow settled to my satisfaction. I cut so much to try to smooth the narrative voice and improve readability but in hindsight it’s left the ‘slide backs’ and the scene at Johnny’s camp very disjointed and without a satisfactory arc of their own to a point of revelation. The problem was narration/voice not the scenes I wanted to include, and in trying to improve voice I stuffed the scenes. -pride is the prevailing spirit of the superior man. This is the Mosley/Tommy one. As a first re-entry to writing and this fandom, I find it’s a little stiff around the edges in narrative voice and scene transitions. It’s not something I can improve in micro edits; every time I try there’s nothing I’d actually change because I still agree with the content, and what’s a word really matter when the content conveyed is the same? But a full rewrite would make the room for softening the voice and smoothing scene segues. I’d also add a little more dialogue between Tommy and Mosley, and Mosley and Lizzie, but *most significantly* I’d completely redo the scene w Lizzie and Arthur. I’ve always found Arthur difficult to get into, but I just had this *drive* that a fic where Tommy lets himself get fucked neeeeeeeded Arthur in it, but at the same time Arthur couldn’t actually ever speak to Tommy. Arthur had to be lurking, somehow. So I wrote it in but had only half thoughts about what it was supposed to do. I think I could do that Lizzie and Arthur conversation more justice and weight after working more through Arthur in other fics, and especially now thinking more layered things of Arthur’s role in the source material thanks to @vertigosuite’s visual/scene analyses.
