Coming soon: Flying taxis at 2025 World Expo
Kyodo News | 22 February 2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ANA Holdings Inc., Japan Airlines Co. and three other companies have been selected to operate air taxi services during the 2025 World Exposition to be held in Osaka in western Japan, the event's organizer said Tuesday.
Japan wants the "flying cars" to be one of the main attractions at the expo, with the next-generation mobility expected to provide access to the event venue to be set up on an artificial island in Osaka Bay.
Tumblr media
ANA Holdings, the parent of All Nippon Airways Co., will partner with U.S. startup Joby Aviation Inc., a company in which Toyota Motor Corp. has a stake.
Other companies selected as operators are SkyDrive Inc., based in Aichi Prefecture, and trading firm Marubeni Corp.
Tumblr media
Naoki Okada, minister in charge of the World Expo 2025, said he hopes the technology will "surprise" people around the world.
He also called on the five companies to cooperate on demonstration flights prior to the start of the 184-day event.
The flying cars, which will carry two to five people each, will connect the three areas of the exposition venue on Yumeshima, central Osaka city, and nearby Kansai International Airport.
Their flight routes, landing and takeoff areas are to be determined.
Tumblr media
ANA Holdings will operate a five-seat vertical takeoff and landing aircraft developed by Joby Aviation.
In October, the California-based company applied for its aircraft design to be certified for use in Japan.
JAL will operate two-rider aircraft developed by German firm Volocopter GmbH, while Marubeni will operate five-seater aircraft created by Vertical Aerospace Group Ltd., a British company, after reserving in January delivery slots for 25 of them.
SkyDrive is looking to get a type certificate for its two-rider aircraft, still in development, before the exposition.
Meanwhile, the operator of the takeoff and landing sites at the exposition venue on Yumeshima will be Orix Corp., according to the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition.
The World Expo 2025 will last from April 13 through October 13 under the theme "Designing Future Society for Our Lives."

Making this its own post to further spread the correct information.
The name Mickey Mouse is Public Domain.
Trademark is a separate thing from copyright. Trademark means you can't trick people into thinking your version of Mickey Mouse is sanctioned by Disney.
You do not need to rename Mickey Mouse to use this character.
He's literally named in the title card (along with two alternate outfits for him and Minnie that are also Public Domain, which means, yes! You can give him gloves!).
The only way the name "Mickey Mouse" would still be copyrighted would be if he hadn't been named yet in Steamboat Willie, which very clearly isn't the case, because his name is the largest thing on the title card:
Tumblr media
[ID: A screenshot from the Web Archive’s video player showing the video paused at 00:04, showing the title card that reads:
“Disney Cartoons presents A Mickey Mouse sound cartoon: Steambie Willie, A Walt Disney comic by UB Iwerks, recorded by Cinephone system, copyright MCMXXVIII”.
On either side of the text are Mickey and Minnie, smiling at eachother. Mickey is holding up a hat in one hand, and a cane in the other with a wide grin of greeting. He has a white face, a buck tooth in his open mouth, white gloves, and light grey shoes and shorts, with the shorts having dark buttons and darker vertical stripes. Minnie has her hands clasped as she smiles at Mickey with lowered eyelids in a flirting pose. She has the same hat as mickey, with a flower stick behind it. She has two circles on her chest like a bra or bow, with a polkadot skirt with a wavy edge. She is wearing light grey heels. End ID.]
There is also a public domain poster with color, which means this design is also Public Domain. And again, this one also names him Mickey Mouse -- making the name Mickey Mouse Public Domain! And this alone would have made the name Public Domain even if he hadn't been named in Steamboat Willie! And, he again has gloves!
Tumblr media
[ID: A color poster reading, "Celebrity Productions Inc. Present a Mickey Mouse Sound Cartoon. A Walt Disney comic drawn by UB Iwerks. The World's Funniest cartoon character, a sensation in sound and synchrony.". Mickey is drawn with one hand on his hip and the other in the air. He is wearing yellow gloves with a button in the center of the palm, red pants with white buttons, and large brown boots. He has a red blush on his nose and cheek. His tongue is red, and his black pupils have a white triangle on the side. The background is pale tan. End ID.]
There is also literally nothing stopping anyone from giving any of these characters new color designs with entirely new outfits. That's what the Public Domain is for. Don't think you can only use these characters in black and white, you just can't use versions that Disney still owns the copyright to.

List of Year 24 complete manga work in English or Italian
I made this list mainly to myself, but you can easily use it too. I am on a mission to read every Year 24 group manga available, so here I collected:
licensed manga (in English and Italian)
online scans
Every licensed manga has a the name of the publisher too, and you might find the Italian translation easier than the Japanese.
I added an "online" to the ones you can definitely find scanned online. Every title is linked to where to read the story nearby, keep in mind these websites come and go and might have ads.
If you see a licensed title in italics it means that the manga cannot be found anywhere online and scanned (and translated). Or that some short stories in the collection (if it is a collection) cannot be found anywhere online and scanned.

The Grivet Arm (1978) by Gallaher Research Inc., Western-Salem, North Carolina.
"Purchasing some form of "experimenter's arm" kit? There has been one attempt at a commercial kit product for the robot arm experimenter, a product which was advertised in this magazine starting last spring. I refer to the Gallaher Research "Grivet" arm, which is shown in photo 1. The photograph was taken using the kit I bought for $400 and put together one Sunday morning in September. … Mr Gallaher's robot arm was a crude start at best, for all we got is a rather shaky mechanism with six DC motors. The purchaser's inventiveness must supply the details of electronic interface and control. A suggestion, in the marketing literature supplied with the kit, is that relays be used to provide control of the 6V DC which will run the motors. This kit provided what you see in the photograph: a limited mechanical start on a complete arm which must include a mounting of some sort, power supplies, bidirectional motor drive electronics, and sensory feedback. There is not even a suggestion of how to mount and use sensors to provide feedback control of the arm in a practical object manipulation environment such as a chessboard with chess pieces as the objects.
The designer of this arm did his homework with respect to balance, for it will sit upright on its counterweight with no particular urge to topple over. The photograph was taken with the arm in this position. But if mounted in a horizontal position as suggested by the sales literature (assembly drawings, but no instruction manual, come with this device) several of the parts are under enough stress to be visibly bent. The only way I can see to practically mount this arm is by having it hang down from the shaft furthest from the hand mechanism (flipping it 180 degrees around the vertical axis of photo 1).
The Gallaher arm kit's parts are apparently handcrafted. When you think of the time and energy that went into its creation, it is obviously a bargain at $400, even if incomplete. Some of the first microcomputer kits such as the Mark-8, Altair and Sphere were similarly incomplete, and a whole industry was formed filling in the gaps to provide a complete computer system in assembled form. Therefore, we can expect more complete robotic systems as further products are offered to the experimenter. Just as "hardheaded realists" (ie: unimaginative people) scoffed only four years ago at the idea of a personal computer, I can almost hear the equivalent comments about domestic robots being uttered as I pen these words at the keyboard of my personal computer." – Byte Magazine February 1979, Volume 04 Number 02 (p6).

Enoch (Over the Garden Wall) Crochet Pattern
Tumblr media
Disclaimer:
This pattern has a lot of sewing. You've been warned! I couldn't find a way to minimize the sewing and still have the same color changes and composition I wanted.
Materials
Two different greens (Green 1 and Green 2) and orange yarn (I used a Medium sized yarn) Appropriately sized Crochet Hook (I used a 3.5mm hook) Black, soft brown and off-white felt to make the face details (If you can't find off-white felt, like me, buy white felt and paint it off-white with acrylic paint) Stitch Markers Tapestry Needle Fiberfill Scissors Sewing Pins
Techniques

EZ-INC: EZ Panel Kit
Tumblr media
Published: 7-13-2024 | Updated: N/A SUMMARY This is a set of decorative panels to add unique detail to your builds. This is a convenient way to have hundreds of additional sci-fi/industrial textures in game without cluttering my wall/floor catalogs too much. There are 3 panels for straight/slanted walls respectively – they are slightly thicker to give the design some dimension/depth -  and there are 4 completely flat panels. I’ve also made a new “click wall” wallpaper you can use to gauge height when making/placing objects. This version shows full- and half-click points in two vertical directions (up/down). Each panel uses this texture as a default.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DETAILS Requires all EPs/SPs (may or may not work with basegame). §1 | Build > Architecture and Build > Wallpaper Items with MESH in their name are required for objects to show correctly in-game. Some textures are shared across all panels but for the most part, each has its own unique recolor options. Choose them based on the texture/size you need. Thicker panels show textures on both sides and have 2-subsets so you can mix recolors. Diagonal versions are repo’d to straight versions and are meant for diagonal walls/placement. The 3-tile Panel 001 is repo’d to the 2-tile panel. NOTE: This means that 3-Tile Panel 001 default image reads “2x” even though it is actually 3 tiles wide (“3x”). Pay attention to the object title. You may need “move objects on/off” and “snap to grid on/off” cheats to place items on slanted walls. Not all patterns look the same on each piece but there are plenty to choose from. Look for additional panel recolors under the #co2recolors #ts2recolors #co2repo #ts2repo tags. There will be more published for the #co2ezinc series in the future also. ITEMS 16-Click Scale Wallpaper 1-3 Tile EZ Panels (Thin) (28 poly) 1-3 Tile EZ Panels (Flat) (2 poly) DOWNLOAD (choose one) from SFS | from MEGA

Stripes (Long and short)
This is highly dependent on what your yarn is like, and how tightly you crochet. I personally find ch 20 and ch 16 work well for me, but results may vary. Your ultimate goal is that the stripe can comfortably reach around the wing
Tumblr media
Vents (make 2)
Ch 14, turn, skip 2, dc 12
To be most accurate, the top of the plane should have a shorter piece of the vents than the bottom. This part can be tricky to sew on, so remember to align the inside edge with the narrow part of the nose cone for best effects!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cockpit
Ch 5
Turn, skip 1, Sc 3, tinc, sc3 in back of row 1, sc 2 in first stitch
Or, you can just use a piece of felt if the shape is not pleasing!
Tumblr media
Sewing things together should be pretty self explanatory. If you make a little guy with this pattern please show me I want to see planes...!!!!

Year-End Poll #51: 2000
Tumblr media
[Image description: a collage of photos of the 10 musicians and musical groups featured in this poll. In order from left to right, top to bottom: Faith Hill, Santana and Rob Thomas, Santana and The Product G&B, Joe, Vertical Horizon, Destiny's Child, Savage Garden, Lonestar, Matchbox Twenty, Toni Braxton. End description]
More information about this blog here
Welcome to the new millennium. A good year for country, ballads, and country ballads. Alternative rock is starting to appear more in the pop charts, and the genre will soon come to define the sound of rock for this decade (along with post-grunge, which will come later). Latin pop and rock is also growing in popularity, with artists like Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias, and the mainstream resurgence of Carlos Santana. This sound would also have a lot of influence over pop and R&B songs by non-Latin artists. Not coincidentally, this is also the year the Latin Grammy Awards was created. These genres do have there distinct sounds and characteristics, but a lot of American music publications at the time used the labels to describe "any pop or rock song in Spanish". I don't think I could do the nuances of this topic justice, so for more of that I'd recommend reading Rock the Nation: Latin/o Identities and the Latin Rock Diaspora by Roberto Avant-Mier.
2000 is also notable for being the year Metallica sued Napster. This suit would later be followed by A&M Records, Inc. v. Napster, Inc., in which Napster was sued by A&M Records and 18 record companies and members of the Recording Industry Association of America. But for most of the year, Metallica (specifically the band's drummer, Lars Ulrich) was the prominent example of artists fighting against music piracy. This is important to bring up, because issues surrounding the cost of music will continue to shape the record industry for the following decades. But more importantly, it gives me an excuse to share this anti-Napster PSA Metallica made for MTV. You're welcome.

Ghostly from TADC -- free crochet pattern
Ravelry link to free PDF here
Ok listen, I know they only appeared for a minute in one episode but I love their shape and their face! I made two immediately, and I made a pattern in case anyone else is interested.
Pattern below the cut:
You will need:
- less than 50g/160m of DK* yarn in two colours: turquoise/green and white
- a 3.5mm* crochet hook
*Sizes can be changed if you want. This will affect the amount of yarn used and the resulting amigurumi size.
- stuffing
- a darning needle to sew and hide ends
- pins
- scissors (unless you like snapping your yarn)
- stitch marker / scrap yarn to mark the round start
Stitch key (US terminology)
sc: single crochet
inc: increase
dec: invisible decrease
hdc: half-double crochet
ss: slip stitch
Finish off: slip stitch into the next stitch, cut your yarn, and pull the loop until the end comes through

17. 4sc, 2dec [6]
18. 4sc, dec [5]
Finish off. Thread the tail through each front loop, and pull to cinch the hole closed.
Body
Some stitches are slip stitches (ss). These must be kept loose, so you can go into them again without trouble.
1. 7sc into a magic ring [7]
2. 7inc [14]
3. (sc, inc) x7 [21]
4. (3sc, inc, 3sc) x3 [24]

14. 2sc, 6ss, 2sc, 9hdc [19]
Stuff as you go.
15. (2sc, dec) x2, 3sc, dec, 3hdc, dec, sc [15]
16. sc, 6ss, 2dec, 2hdc, dec [12]
17. (2sc, dec) x3 [9]
18. 9sc [9]
19. (sc, dec) x3 [6]
20. 6sc [6]
21. 4sc, dec [5]
Poke some stuffing into the tip and finish off. Use the tail to cinch the end shut.
Sew the head to the body (see below).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Align the head to the body, like the pic on the right, with the head angled. Use pins to mark the corners of where you want to sew the piece. It's easier to attach a circle when you treat it like a square.
Eyes (x2)
1. (turquoise/green) 7sc into a magic ring [7]
Slip stitch into the first sc with white yarn.
2. (white) 7inc [14]
Slip stitch and finish off. Pin the eyes high on the face, about 4 stitches apart.
If you want an open mouth, first mark a diamond shape, roughly covering the starting magic ring. Using that as a guide, embroider on a round/oval solid white segment using a fill stitch (below).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To embroider this, repeatedly add vertical lines that are longer at the centre until you get a solid-looking circle/oval. You can then optionally sew around it with a couple of large lines to define the edge.
UWU mouth pieces (x2)
Make in your turquoise/green yarn.
1. 4sc into a magic ring [4]
2. 3inc, 2ss [7]
The second slip stitch does go beyond the end of the row. Finish off.
Attach the uwu segments side-by-side with the slip stitch sides touching each other.
Tumblr media
Sew the uwu pieces slightly covering the mouth. :3
After that, sew on the eyes if you haven't already. The bottoms of the eyes should be just below the top of the lip.
Arms (x2)
1. 5sc into a magic ring [5]
2. 5sc [5]
3. 4sc, inc [6]
4. 6sc [6]
5. 5sc, inc [7]
6. 7sc [7]
7. 7sc [7]
8. 7sc [7]
9. 6sc, inc [8]
10. 8sc [8]
Stuff the arm lightly. Fold the open part so your current stitch is at one corner. Push your hook through both sides and 4sc across the top to shut it.
Tumblr media
Attach the arms at the sides, between the two rows just below where the head connects.
You should now be done!

Note
For oc sunday! I dont know if I've sent post geo yam yet so here you go!
Tumblr media
I've also been experimenting with some shauna designs!
Tumblr media
I'm trying to make her designs more sporty and have come to the executive decision that she only wears shorts
(If the contest outfit is confusing, I just finished playing OR! I'm moving onto Moon now!)
[first image: reference of Yam in her post-Geosenge Incident outfit. She is wearing a black dress with a blood-orange collar, sash, belt, sleeve cuffs, buttons, hem, and shoulder bag. Her tights are also black, and her shoes are black and blood orange. Her felt hat and ponytail hair tie are also blood orange, and there are blood-red Eternal Flowers decorating her hat, bag, and sleeve cuffs. Her arms are crossed and she's looking down nervously.
second image: figure pencil sketches, and several references of Shauna's outfits:
1- a pink tanktop and flats with a blue cardigan, white shorts with gold accents, blue leg warmers, and bandaids on one knee.
2- drawing of her bag, pink and white with a black bow and a black shoulder strap.
3- blue tanktop with a black rose pattern and solid gold vertical stripes, bracelets (inc. mega stone), white shorts with a black hem and pink roses, and pink gladiator sandals.
4- a winter outfit: blue and dark blue puffy jacket, white tights and blue leg warmers under pink shorts, and white/pink ice skates.
5- Shauna's original outfit, with longer shorts and longer sandal straps.
6- Pink magical girl-esque dress with white gloves, a white overshirt/sleeves, and pink boots (and black bows/accents)
7- Contest outfit: rainbow halter top (?) with a white undershirt+shorts, yellow poofy sleeves, a blue train (?) and rainbow shoes with straps.]
MORE REALLY FUN DESIGNS FROM LAST YEAR 🥺🥺🥺

Ring (1991) by Koji Suzuki
Cover art by Chip Kidd
Vertical Inc, March 2003
A mysterious videotape warns that the viewer will die in one week unless a certain, unspecified act is performed. Exactly one week after watching the tape, four teenagers die one after another of heart failure.
Asakawa, a hardworking journalist, is intrigued by his niece's inexplicable death. His investigation leads him from a metropolitan tokyo teeming with modern society's fears to a rural Japan—a mountain resort, a volcanic island, and a countryside clinic—haunted by the past. His attempt to solve the tape's mystery before it's too late—for everyone—assumes an increasingly deadly urgency. Ring is a chillingly told horror story, a masterfully suspenseful mystery, and post-modern trip.
