List of Year 24 complete manga work in English or Italian
I made this list mainly to myself, but you can easily use it too. I am on a mission to read every Year 24 group manga available, so here I collected:
licensed manga (in English and Italian)
online scans
Every licensed manga has a the name of the publisher too, and you might find the Italian translation easier than the Japanese.
I added an "online" to the ones you can definitely find scanned online. Every title is linked to where to read the story nearby, keep in mind these websites come and go and might have ads.
If you see a licensed title in italics it means that the manga cannot be found anywhere online and scanned (and translated). Or that some short stories in the collection (if it is a collection) cannot be found anywhere online and scanned.

The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses
Komura starts his school year with a new seat neighbour in homeroom—the bespectacled Mie. Before long, he’s nursing a raging crush on his quirky classmate who’s always forgetting her glasses! While this might be ideal for Komura to get to know Mie better, will his poor heart give out from the daily strain of being up close and personal with the girl he likes?!

Recurring themes in 2023: my year of lesbian and yuriful manga
Doing this a little different when summarizing 2023. Since I stuck to my decision to not start buying any new licensed series and mainly did cultural catchup for both english and japanese manga I didn't really read enough hot new releases in 2023 for them to warrant a list of their own as they usually do. So to catch up on the months without a roundup as well as a year end summary I will do some themed lists!
The first came to easy since a noticeable trend was how much lesbian and yuri manga i made time for. For clarity I make a subjective distinction of lesbian and yuri works, just as some works I'm more inclined to describe as a Gay or LGBT story rather than a BL if it wasn't published in a BL imprint or invests time to do cultural or social commentary. Now to the list:
Among my favorite lesbian manga read in 2023 are: The Girl That Can't Get A Girlfriend by Mieri Hiranishi Moonlight Flowers by Mutsumi Tsukumo Indigo Blue by Ebine Yamaji Umibe no Kain by Minori Kimura
I won't reiterate too much as I already talked about it in a roundup but Hiranishi gave an extremely refreshing perspective on being a woman who loves masculine women, the dark story of her first heartbreak and the path forward. Love that Viz took the initiative to give her a graphic novel edition and promote her platform by licensing The Girl That Can't Get a Girlfriend. I've always found women's manga to be a not that secret treasure trove of lesbian stories yet I hadn't read the classic that is Moonlight Flowers... Just a truly suspenseful and romantic story of lesbian love as liberation and freedom that I can't recommend enough. Just with a clear warning of depictions of intimate partner violence that could be upsetting.
Yamaji has a well known track record of exploring lesbianism as well as bisexuality and I think Indigo Blue was extremely interesting in its explooration of the protagonist and her journey to figuring out what she wants as she's caught between two relationships. Another story of a woman's journey to confront who she is and what she wants: Umibe no Cain was a rather heartbreaking story of a young woman seeking refuge with a woman older than herself and as they start forming a frienfdship she begins to face the hurt and trauma she faced from her mother. But as the two women grow closer their relationship might take a turn that they can't come back from.
In the yuri-ish category: Kimi no Kureru Mazui Ame by Kaiko Fuyumushi OL to Ningyo by Mai Shiba
Won't reiterate too much of Kimi no Kureru Mazui Ame as I already talked about it in a roundup but love bite sized depictions of a miserable adolescence and toxic yuri but not quite. And if you found yourself taken by the more supernatural stories in this collection then may I recommend OL to Ningyo? Described by the author themselves as yuri-ish this collection depicts the bonds of human girls and their non-human counterparts. Humans, vampires, tengu, mermaid, and oni all face their own challenges and conflicts both romantic and otherwise.
In the Now That's What I Call Yuri category: Natsu to Lemon to Overlay by Ru & Miyako Miyahara Ki ni Natteru Hito ga Otoko Janakatta (The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy At All) by Sumiko Arai Sukeban to Tenkousei by Fujichika
Natsu to Lemon to Overlay is the manga adaption of a yuri award winning novel novel that I picked kind of at random. An aspiring voice actress struggling to make any career moves are requested by a mysterious woman to read the obituary at her own funeral. What happens next will warm your heart. The Guy She Liked is one where I'm just going to assume most if not all of you are aware of so I'm just going to say that I like it and am looking forward to the next volume 👍 And last but not least: an adorable 80's throwback with some truly heartwarming moments and developments not to mention very funny: Sukeban to Tenkousei by Fujichika

Annnnddd we're almost finished with the first trial! I urge you all to please please please vote for Asuka and Raiden while you still can (I'm hopefully we can get to the same number of votes Akari/Kousei had)
At the same time, I'm working on T2 sprites of characters that do not involve Raiden + Asuka in their arcs (yet ;)). I can't give an estimate when T2 will come out, but I'm aiming for before July!
Meanwhile, since all the prisoners had their T1, it's time for this poll one last time!

Professional Mask || open starter
A few days rest and treatment with potion-based salve did Lazard a world of good, but he was still hurting come Monday. But he couldn’t just call off for this - he called out so rarely that it would raise a dozen red flags and invite questions he’d very much like to avoid. So he carefully treated and bandaged his hand before slipping on his glove, grateful that they were long enough to conceal the fading bruise around his wrist. The wide stripes of bruising across his back were hidden entirely by his shirt and jacket, and even if they still pulsed unpleasantly they were at least hidden.
He smiled wryly at the mirror, taking a good look at himself. To appearances, nothing was wrong. Perfect. Time to get to work.
Minori rarely had reason to venture up to the executive floors of Shinra Tower. Today, she had two. True, she had more than enough work to keep her busy in the labs, especially now that they were down another intern. Someone had to deliver reports where they needed to go; Hojo had appropriated all of the remaining assistants for his current project. But now she could kill the proverbial two birds with one stone, and all in one office.
She tapped at the open door. “Director Lazard? Dr. Kimura from the Science Dept. May I speak with you, sir?”

May-July 2023 roundup: Favorite one-shot comps edition
its not over until I get to the one shot collections.
Flight by Minori Kimura is my first one-shot collection by her and immediately I was in love. Smart, sensitive, and very unlike anything I’ve read from her peers or anyone working today. Really looking forward to reading more so I have more to say about her style and talents
Rainy Doori no Niji by Keiko Fukuyama is not a one-shot collection but an anthology of connected stories centered around a painting that keeps changing hands. I only had a vague familiarity of Fukuyama by way of a cover of hers having caught my eye at some point but I hadn't memorized her name so this acquisition was very much something out of the manga itself. Polished and charming character art that reflects her background in anime not to mention fun and creative storytelling reminiscent of the early generations of children’s anime. Once I finished I was pretty embarrassed that I didn’t knowing anything about her at all prior to this.
Suki Desu, Kono Shoujo Manga is a 5 volume anthology that’s very special because it wasn’t curated by a group of editors but Shoujo manga artists who submitted a one-shot either someone else made or from their own career that they’re particularly proud of. And truly there were nooooo misses, it covers a 50 year time span and gave me the chance to read the works of artists I already love, were curious about, or never even heard of before. The covers are also all illustrations Chiki Ooya made specifically for the anthology series. Since a bit more than 10 years I really hope someone does a project like this again I’d love to know what the manga artist currently in the scene would pick as their favorite shoujo manga one-shot. Check its anilist page to see the full table of contents!
“GARO” “COM” is another curated anthology focusing on the very iconic and formative magazines named in the title (if you read Mitsuru Adachi and Rumiko Takahashi’s relay manga from Came The Mirror you may remember them discussing how formative both magazines were for them). Volume 1 covers the established talents who made up the initial all-stars line up in each magazine, Shirato Sampei’s Kamui Den, Tezuka’s Phoenix, Shotaro Ishinomori’s Fantasy World Jun, and Shinji Nagashima’s Fuuten are previewed along with one-shots from other stars. Whereas volume 2 features some of the breakout talents from each magazine. It was a great way to get a taste of what reading these magazines were like, although if you keep up with the alt manga that gets licensed into English you might have read most of the Garo works already (and for Garo it was a rather tame selection). Absolutely another type of anthology series I wish someone would bring back, bc I want moooooore. Check its anilist page for the full lineup!

YEAR 24 GROUP
A group of women who revolutionized the world of shōjo manga and the vision of the female mangaka.
They are known as the Year 24 Group or as Forty-Niners since they were all born around the year 24 of the Shōwa era (1949)
The entrance of women to the dedication of manga as a profession was very slow, since until then being a mangaka was a well-accepted job only for men. Meanwhile, Japanese women were still tied to housework.
But Japan after losing World War II was occupied for 7 years by the United States, which caused changes in Japanese customs. Beate Sirota, an American defender of women's rights, introduced legal equality between men and women in the 1947 constitution. She also gave the right to marriage by mutual agreement and lastly she gave women the right to divorce, to own/buy property and to inherit. Thanks to Sirota, women were freed little by little from being housewives, if they wanted, and were able to dedicate themselves to jobs that were previously considered for men, more naturally.
During the 70s, after the student strikes, the scourge of modernity and the sexual revolution, the mangakas of the Year 24 Group began to debut and the manga stopped having molds.
The Magnificent Forty-Niners cast aside the innocence of the female mangaka that preceded them, yet are aware of their limitations, praise their achievements, and serve as an influence.
The women of the Year 24 Group were by no means conformists, as evidenced in their works and private lives, and made shōjo an exploratory category in which they included new genres that had never been touched before in this demographic. Until now, Shōjo was mainly (if not only) about the simple life of high school girls, it was just about the slice of life. But these ladies gave depth to the characters, filling them with philosophical or existential questions and on several occasions the girls stopped having the leading role. They introduced other genres such as science fiction, shōnen-ai (currently bl, love between two men) or bildungsroman and included elements such as the exploration of sexuality, genderqueer characters, adult women, vampires or rock and roll. And they dared to place their stories in places outside of Japan and in the past.
Moto Hagio was the core of the Year 24 Group and shared an apartment outside of Tokyo with another top Forty-Niner, Keiko Takemiya, for 3 years (1970-1973). Later the apartment became the Ōisumigakuen or Ōizumi Salon, a center where beginner mangaka girls will go to learn about manga, help each other and share ideas.
Gradually they gained popularity. Moto Hagio, Keiko Takemiya, Riyoko Ikeda, Yasuko Aoike, Toshie Kihara, Minori Kimura, Yumiko Oshima, Nanae Sasaya and Ryoko Yamagishi, all of them are part of the Year 24 Group whether they are more or less known in the West, in Japan they won their recognition.
— MŌTO HAGIO (1949-)
Currently she is the best known of the "Year 24 Group". Although she liked to draw since she was a child and in adolescence she was clear that she wanted to dedicate herself to manga, she did not have it easy since her mother didn't like it.
♡ The Poe Clan (1972-1976)
- Shōjo/josei (fantasy, horror)
- Spanish
♡ Otherworld Barbara (2002-2005)
- Josei (science fiction)
- English
—KEIKO TAKEMIYA (1950-)
Is dedicated to the teaching and dissemination of manga and also to preserve and reproduce manga with historical value.
♡ The Song of Wind and Trees (1976-84)
- Shōjo (shōnen-ai/bl)
- Spanish
♡ Tera e... (1977-1980)
- Shōnen (space opera)
- Spanish
—RIYOKO IKEDA ♡ (1947-)
♡ The Rose of Versailles (1972-1973)
Studied philosophy at university while drawing manga, although she finally had to leave his studies due to pressure.
- Shōjo (historical, romance)
- Spanish / english
♡ Oniisama e... (1973-1975)
- Shōjo (drama, slice of life)
—YASUKO AOIKE (1948-)
Debuted at the age of 15 by winning an award from a magazine. The vast majority of her works are or have shōnen-ai elements, since she grew up surrounded by strong men (her family had a construction company).
♡ From Eroica with Love (1976-2012)
- Shōjo (comedy, action, bl)
♡ Sons of Eve (1976-1979)
-shōjo (comedy, bl)
—RYOKO YAMAGISHI (1947-)
As a child practiced ballet, an element that is part of many of her works. And she introduced yuri as a genre in shōjo.
♡ Hi Izuru Tokoro no tenshi (1980-84)
- Shōjo (supernatural, historical)
♡ Shiroi Heya no Futari (1971)
- Shōjo (yuri)
—TOSHIE KIHARA (1948-)
The vast majority of her works are considered Josei, because they are not fanciful or humorous (there are exceptions). Some of her mangas have served as inspiration for musicals performed by the all-female Takarazuka Revue.
♡ Angelique (1977-1979)
- Shōjo (romance, historical)
♡ Mari to Shingo (1979-1984)
-Shōjo (bl, historical)
—NANAE SASAYA (1950-)
She is the youngest of four siblings. Her father wanted all his children to go to university and become teachers, but she gave it up to dedicate herself to manga. Is known for her horror stories with occult themes.
♡ Glass no penguin (1983)
- Josei ( Drama Slice of life)
♡ Makiko (1976)
- Shōjo (romantic comedy)
—YUMIKO OSHIMA (1947-)
Implanted new ways of making manga. Likes characters' thoughts being free on the page instead of in speech bubbles.
♡ Wata no Kuni Hoshi (1978-1987)
- Shōjo (fantasy, Romance)
♡ Gou Gou Datte Neko de Aru(1996-2011)
- josei (slice of life)
—MINORI KIMURA (1949-)
She debuted professionally at the age of 14 and, despite her very little recognition in the West, she is considered one of the brightest members of the "Year 24 Group". Some of her works are educational and deal with health issues.
♡ Umibe no Cain (1980-1981)
-shōjo (yuri)
♡ Ai-chan wo sagashite (2011)
- shōjo (slice of life)
The effort of each of them was not in vain. The women of the Year 24 Group have achieved great awards and recognition over the years. They were nominated for 10 years in a row for one of the most prestigious Science Fiction awards in Japan, the Seiun Awards, and won up to 6 times (1978 y 1988). Moto Hagio won the Seiun Award in 1980, 1983 and 1985. They have also been awarded another of the most prestigious awards, but this time it is for manga, the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Award. Moto Hagio was the first person to receive the Osamu Tekuza Award for Excellence (1997). Some years later Ryoko Yamagishi and Keiko Takemiya also won it.
The Forty-Niners were the main and most relevant mangaka, but it doesn't mean that other female mangaka didn't arise during that time. Perhaps they didn't have such a revolutionary ideology or innovative way of making manga as the women of the Year 24 Group, but they also contributed to the world of manga (like Sumika Yamamoto with her manga Ace wo Nerae!)
The mark that these mangakas have left and continue to leave is not small at all. They have reinvented, innovated and set aside the limits. They made great strides despite having many things against them and thanks to all that, their works are classics today and all of them influence many current artists.
