How to Choose the Best Wood for Your Kitchen Cabinets – Affinity Kitchens News
Wood cabinets are appealing because of their distinct and unique character. Some prefer the predictability of engineered materials like thermofoil and laminate but if you want a natural look, nothing compares to the beautiful color variations and grain patterns found in real wood. Choosing the right wood species for your cabinetry largely depends on your personal style preferences and budget.

4Clear Alder
Characteristics
Clear Alder is relatively soft wood with a moderately fine, uniform grain. With color that ranges from light tan to reddish brown, Clear Alder is similar in appearance to Cherry but much softer which is useful when producing distressed and antiqued finishes. Unlike Cherry, Clear Alder gets lighter with age and exposure to sunlight.

Style
Knotty Alder is less popular than it used to be, but is still used to achieve a rustic look and often combined with a distressed or worn finish.
Finishes
Because it is soft, Knotty Alder is easy to distress and looks beautiful when stained, glazed or painted.
7Oak
Characteristics
Oak is a very hard wood which is light to medium brown in color and has a coarse, uneven grain.
Availability
Oak is readily available and is a less expensive alternative to Rift Oak.
Style
Oak cabinets are associated with an older, outdated style, but new finishes (and the lower price point) have given this wood species a modest uptick in popularity.
Finishes
Oak was traditionally stained, but new paint finishes allow the the distinctive grain to be featured in an updated look.
Other Tips
Keep in mind that each wood species’ colors and grain patterns are affected by the environment in which they’re grown. These naturally occurring features in wood make it impossible to guarantee that all pieces of wood within a kitchen will perfectly match in grain pattern and color. This organic variety is what makes natural wood products so appealing.
The finishing process enhances and protects the wood’s natural beauty, highlight the inherent qualities of genuine wood to create an appealing and functional product. Each wood species used has its own unique characteristics, and some species and color combinations will further accentuate the natural wood color and grain variations. In addition, grain texture and mineral composition in individual pieces of wood may also range from even and consistent to varied and dramatic. All of these factors combine to create the distinctive beauty that makes genuine wood cabinetry so desirable.
Ultraviolet inhibitors in the finishes slow down the effects of aging from sunlight and fluorescent lighting; however, long term exposure to these light sources will ultimately change the appearance of any wood. The effects of this aging will occur on all species of wood but are seen more quickly on Cherry, Alder and Maple.

Newport Beach Bayfront House
Happy new week, my dear friends! It’s great to share this newly-built Newport Beach, CA bayfront house with you guys. Here, the architect, Eric Aust Architect, (previously featured on Home Bunch here: California Modern Farmhouse Beach House), shares some insights:
“The client purchased the lot in order to build a custom home for himself and his two teenage children. His goal was to have a comfortable, modern beach house with traditional design aspects. The lot is small (30’x85’) but typical for the area. The major bonus of this lot in particular is that it included an additional large sand area between the lot and Newport Harbor. The design focused on an open concept with views out to the harbor. We used large multi-slide steel doors along the rear of the house in order to provide unobstructed views to Newport Harbor and the boats beyond. Finishes inside the house have a nautical, rustic feel without being kitschy. The house feels light and bright due to well placed windows, without feeling like you’re looking right into your neighbor’s homes. We were also able to include a small 3rd floor bonus room and roof deck that provide expansive views.”
See the complete house tour and its details shared by the builder, Jack Mitchell Construction. I hope you have a good time!

Shaping Slick Dark Interiors With Black & Grey Decor
Dark and decidedly slick, these black and grey interiors push the boundaries on great taste and modern home design. Charcoal living rooms play on a theme of shadows and highlights to shape layouts that are intriguing and ambiguous. Slatted dividers, stone walls and textured elements take on added prominence in the low light. Graphite kitchens skim the edges of living rooms, falling away to let areas of comfort take the lead. Lounge furniture takes on a sculptural quality in stark surroundings, whilst cool art and contemporary home accessories shake up the darkness with quirky silhouettes and abstract motifs. Black dining sets are lit from overhead by eye-catching lighting designs that burn through the blackness.
Visualizer: Hot Walls   A white Doric column cuts thickly through the black and grey interior of this Moscow studio design, demanding the layout to work around it.
A modern sofa configuration is pulled around the base of the column, facing both toward the TV and into the room behind.
Solid oak flooring lightens up the decor scheme and introduces texture.
Vertical radiators blend into the dark backdrop, placed either side of an undressed window.
The black living room is a minimalist open plan that includes the lounge, a dining area, and a concealed kitchen.
An artistic modern dining room chandelier snakes across the dark space, burning brightly against industrial metal rafters.
A smooth wall of wood fronted cabinets washes warmth and lighter tone across the entire length of the room, with the TV mounted against one end.
Directional track lights highlight the wood grain wall, whilst leaving the black dining set in the shadows.
Single hung windows set narrow lightboxes into the stark backdrop.
A slatted screen separates the grey dining room from the home entryway.
The kitchen remains a secretive volume until it’s required for purpose.
At meal times, the wall of wooden storage opens up to reveal a section of kitchen shelving and base units.
Moody backlit shelves give the one wall kitchen the appearance of a wet bar, but a small hob in the worktop reveals its full function.
Visualizer: Amir Adilbekov   Our second home design features much larger windows, but the interior design is made equally dark with charcoal grey and black elements.
A linear LED floor lamp interrupts the darkened room. A thinner LED ribbon strokes the top of the window wall.
KAWS statues loom out of the shadows, their outlines kissed by low light from the window wall.
A pair of oval coffee tables scoop out the centre of the lounge, their rounded bases darkening into obscurity.
A modern sectional sofa is separated into pieces to form the outline of the lounge layout.
The kitchen’s linear suspension light spans the entire length of a long stone island, which is set with an induction hob and the kitchen sink.
A wall of full height black cabinets is interrupted by a glass cabinet. Soft lighting illuminates the wine glasses stored inside.
The wine glass cabinet is set dead centre behind the kitchen island, creating satisfying symmetry.
Minimalist kitchen bar stools cut sharp silhouettes.
Architect: Anmol Gohil   Visualizer: Anmol Gohil   Brown accents interrupt the black and grey decor scheme of home design number three. A mocha coffee table lays down a circle shape theme that is repeated in abstract wall art behind the sofa. A novelty floor lamp introduces a sculptural element.
An area rug adds texture beneath the round coffee table, and a houndstooth pouf brings in bold pattern.
Quilted cushions pile up on the sofa, layering in extra comfort.
The pouf is seated close to the TV wall, which is fitted with custom built cabinetry. A nook is positioned low in the wall, replacing the traditional fireplace.
The dark kitchen falls back into the shadows, resting quietly alongside the lounge.
A home workspace attaches to the end of the one wall kitchen, separated out by an oven housing unit.
Visualizer: Leng Keng   A halo wall light commands the black living room of home design number four. The light feature accentuates a KAWS statue by the home entryway and an industrial style rack for shoes.
Brown accents come into play here too, in the form of a modern sofa design.
The brown leather sofa looks light against a charcoal grey backdrop. White pampas and a white fluffy area rug further lift the scheme. A black Eames bird makes a stark addition to the pale stone coffee table.
White modern dining chairs lift the look of the black kitchen diner. Glass dining room pendant lights cause liquid-like reflections above the round dining table.
A brown floor bed is complemented by golden accents in the grey bedroom. A rugged black stone headboard wall features another sleek gold halo.
Visualizer: Renderoom   Our final home design is a graphite and pale oak model. The living room area rug brings in a modern geometrical element.
Black and white artwork is propped informally against the foyer wall, creating a transition space between the entryway and the kitchen.
The black media cabinet and bookcase are one integrated unit, giving the wall a clean and simplified aesthetic. Coloured inserts break up the flat black stacks.
Indoor plants brighten the dark interior, and add height at the centre of the layout and dining room table.
A blue glass vase adds a subtle drop of colour into the monochrome room. Glass fronted cabinets give the dark kitchen a more open feel and a light reflective quality.

Types of Flooring
There are many different types of flooring available with Wood. Let’s take a look at the advantages of each one to determine what will work best for your situation.
 Bamboo Flooring
Comparatively priced to traditional hardwood flooring, bamboo is stronger and more water resistant. It also takes refinishing exceptionally well. Even, you can know that you are making an ecologically sound choice as bamboo grows several times faster than other kinds of hardwood making it significantly more renewable.
Hardwood Flooring
The biggest advantage of hardwood flooring is that it’s easy to maintain and clean. Dirt and stains to not sink into it like carpeting. The color of your hardwood floors will last a long time without fading. It can also be the most aesthetically pleasing choice. One of the main disadvantages of hardwood flooring is that it can be more expensive than other options.
Engineered Flooring
Engineered wood is real wood flooring that’s built in layers and bonded together. The top layer is identical to a traditional hardwood floor, giving you all the aesthetic benefits. Beneath the surface, engineered wood flooring contains layers of high-density fiberboard. This gives it greater stability and strength than solid wood. Because of this, engineered wood is more resistant to humidity and temperature changes. You can even install it in a finished basement.
Laminate Flooring
Lightweight, inexpensive, versatile, durable, laminate flooring was a highly underrated option for many years and has only recently begun to get the credit it deserves.

How to Choose the Right Kitchen Cabinet Doors?
New Post has been published on http://miamiwebdesignbyniva.com/index.php/2019/06/03/how-to-choose-the-right-kitchen-cabinet-doors/
How to Choose the Right Kitchen Cabinet Doors?
Whether renovating a kitchen or making a new one, there are so many things to decide upon and each one of these things requires serious decision making. While most people pay more attention to the countertops and tiles, even the small things like kitchen cabinet doors need equal attention. There is no denying the fact that the tiles and the countertop would be the attention-catching things in your kitchen but choosing the right kitchen cabinet doors is equally important because the cabinets define your style and preferences.
Here are the common kitchen cabinet door styles available in your area. By learning about each of them, it would be easier for you to decide which one to choose for your kitchen:
Raised Panel
If you want to add dimension to the cabinets in your kitchen, you can use the raised panel style of kitchen doors. The style raises the middle panel and the carved edges that surround this raised panel add depth and visual detail to the cabinet, giving it a perfect look. As a classic type of cabinetry, the raised panel style of kitchen doors always look good and they will never go out of style.
Mission
This can be called the commonest of the styles for kitchen cabinet doors. An all-time favorite, the Mission style of doors have clean lines and therefore are suitable for all types of kitchens. The Mission cabinet door has a flat, framed center panel inset. If you are looking for extra appeal and beauty, you can replace the center panel with glass. It is the wood coloration and the natural grain of oak that imparts the Mission-style cabinet doors the beauty and splendor that it boasts of. You will never find the Mission-style kitchen cupboard doors going out of trend. In fact they will blend with whatever changes you make to the kitchen.
Shaker
As a kitchen cabinet door style, the Shaker style is quite similar to the Mission and the Raised Panel style. It has the flat central panel and a wide wood frame that surrounds the panel, outlining the door. The difference between the Shaker style door and the Mission style door is that the former has a slightly softer look while the latter one emphasizes more on the strength of the door and has additional slats and vertical lines. Another difference between the Shaker and Mission style of kitchen doors is that the former is made from cherry, maple or walnut wood while the latter one is made generally from oak.
Beadboard
If you want your kitchen to exude the charm of the countryside, choose to install the beadboard style of cabinet doors. If you have chosen beadboard paneling for the rest of your home, then your kitchen will also have the same style of kitchen cupboard doors.
Arched Cathedral
This style of kitchen doors has the arched style frame outlining the central raised panel. These cabinet doors are usually paired with the Raised panel doors with the former being on the upper cabinets while the latter are used for the lower cabinets.

O'Sullivan Skoufoglou Architects adds "simple, warm and characterful" extension to London house
O'Sullivan Skoufoglou Architects has extended a typical terraced home in northwest London, by adding a new timber-lined room that opens onto a brick-paved garden.
The Dewsbury Road extension was designed by locally based O'Sullivan Skoufoglou Architects to replace a 1970s addition at the rear of a property in Dollis Hill, which had split the kitchen and dining area into two separate rooms.
In addition to creating a single unified space, the new extension was designed to improve the link between the house and garden, as well as providing better natural light and more storage.
"The response of the re-structured room places emphasis on the connection with the garden," the studio said, "with the dining area incorporated into the facade of deep vertical oak fins, whose rhythm on a brick plinth provides direct views out yet sideways privacy."
A large opening looks out onto the garden, which is accessible through a glazed door to one side of the new space. A pair of hinged panels at either end of the room can also be opened to allow fresh air to circulate.
Wood is used throughout the interior, for flooring, ceilings and built-in storage units that bookend the space, creating a sense of warmth and enclosure.
Exposed oak beams highlight the structure, and align with vertical fins protruding from the facade. The rest of the cabinetry is clad in ash-veneered plywood.
"Oak and ash are considered sacred in Irish mythology and were used symbolically with the owner's roots in mind," the architects added.
The dining area comprises a bespoke solid-ash table and bench seat that fits in seamlessly with the adjacent cabinets.
The built-in kitchen units also utilise the same material palette, in a move the studio suggested helps the space to feel "simple, yet warm and characterful".
The light tone and subtle grain of the timber is complemented by a pale stone countertop, with a black basin mixer, stovetop and cabinet handles punctuating the uniform palette.
The extension is topped with a black metal roof punctured by a skylight that allows natural light to filter down between the ceiling beams to illuminate the dining area.
A sliding door connects the kitchen and dining space with a corridor leading to a refurbished reception at the front of the house, where the same combination of pale-wood furniture and storage is applied.
All of the timber elements were fabricated and preassembled by a family-run workshop. Connections between the various modules were designed in such a way that they could be transported to the site and easily slotted back together.

So you’re shopping for cabinets, huh? Maybe from Wellborn or Waypoint, and you’ve not quite figured out what kind of material you’d like to use in your kitchen or bathroom. Fact of the matter is, there are plenty of variations to choose from when it comes to cabinetry, one of the defining characteristics being wood type. Today, I’d like to list the several wood types that are available in cabinets and mention some of the qualities to give you a better of understanding of what you’re getting!
Red Oak Cabinet Wood Type
Oak, in general, is a very hard, heavy kind of wood, which often gives the impression of strength and durability. And in actuality, for such a solid, long-lasting cabinet wood type, it’s not as expensive as one might think. The course grain in this material often varies from vertical grain swoops to a more distinctive “swoop” pattern, providing more curvature in the grain. It’s an absolutely timeless material, for sure.
One of the main reasons why I prefer this material over others is it’s versatility. Choosing this material gives you the option of staining it to your fancy. Which, if you’re like me, and grow too accustomed to a certain look over a period of time, then this will be the way to go. A refreshing look is merely a couple stain coats away.
      White Oak Cabinet Wood Type
White Oak is obviously very similar to its “red” counterpart, except for one bit – it’s a little stronger. With more golden tones, this wood type will give you the elegant look that you desire, and is literally perfect with any style. As pictured, White Oak is definitely more subtle in its grain. It seems softer, gentler than the red oak. I’d love to tell you that it’s similar in price, but the fact is, most times it’s only available in custom order.
I’ll say this much, too, a clear finish will brilliantly highlight the grain in this cabinet wood type. On the other hand,  stain could possibly oversaturate it, exaggerating the grain, making it look kind of two-toned. Not a good look.
        Maple Cabinet Wood Type
Maple gives you this lovely look of fine-grain with a gentle, light color. Now, it is slightly more expensive than oak, but it’s not near as dense. It can be stained, but in my opinion if you want to achieve the best look, simply apply a thin coat of clear or natural finish to enhance the texture of this wood type. Trust me, the effects are magnificent in Maple.
This look provides a more contemporary approach to your kitchen or bath remodel. It’s known as a shock-resistant material, as well, and is incredibly durable. It takes paint like a breeze, too! Very versatile, and it’s made to withstand great temperatures and won’t crack or warp like some other materials may do. Sidenote: Because of the aforementioned, this material is quite popular for heavier cabinetry, such as dressers and kitchen cabinets.
        Hickory Cabinet Wood Type
Lighter than oak, but very, very similar in grain pattern and durability. It’s one of the strongest, hardest woods out there! There’s a sort of yellowish hue to it, almost creamy, and where it can also be stained, this material (much like Maple) is better suited with a fine layer of clear coat or natural finish. This is simply to emphasize the wonderful grain lines.
I’m a sucker for them, so I’ll be going that route each and every time. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it, right? More often than not, this material has been used to achieve that lovely rustic style. Because of this, it’s rarely seen as a custom or semi-custom cabinetry. It also needs to be noted that where this type is usually seen with a creamy color, it can also be seen in a dark reddish brown color OR nearly black. Dark hickory is 100% a favorite of mine.
        Cherry Cabinet Wood Type
This material is hard enough to withstand a number of mishaps. Attention parents, if you have little ones running around your kitchen, this material just might be the one for you. It can be used for a number of styles, but is more commonly seen as elegant and formal as a traditional style. Although, there is some versatility to it. I’ve seen this wood type achieved magnificently in contemporary kitchen designs.
One of the absolute best qualities of this cabinet wood type is how it literally ages in time, growing darker with the days. Yes, just like fine wine, the unique look deeps through the years. Now, this type is a bit costly, mind you, which is why it’s often seen as a “luxury” wood.
        Birch Cabinet Wood Type
A fine, fine, durably built wood that is slightly darker than maple, but not by much. It takes finishes very well, and is versatile in that it can guise as a more luxurious wood with a few, simple tweaks. When it’s stained properly, the look can do wonders, disguising as a Maple or Cherry wood type. Because of it’s irregular color, birch is relatively inexpensive. In fact, it’s 25-75% cheaper than other types like cherry or maple.
        Pine Cabinet Wood Type
Ah, now here’s one that sits apart from the rest. Pine is the ONLY softwood species that is commonly used in cabinetry. Because of this, it dents more easier than the others. Definitely not impenetrable, this one. Interestingly enough, this wood type is often used for rustic pieces, like farmhouse-style tables and chairs. If you’ve ever been to Cracker Barrel, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. And now I’m thinking about biscuits and gravy. Excellent.
It’s low-cost, takes paint well, but where some might say it’s perfect for kids’ furniture, I beg to differ. Kids can be a rowdy bunch, especially in the playroom, and this material simply isn’t built for that kind of debauchery. Just throwin’ that out there.
Okay, people, there’s seven of the most commonly used cabinet wood types found in kitchen and bath cabinetry. As you can see, the majority of them get an A for durability, which should be a significant factor in your decision-making process! I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that we offer some fine cabinetry here at Builders Surplus that features these amazing cabinet wood types. Come check out what we have, and we would be glad to offer our professional advice during a free kitchen design consultation. Until the, be safe, stay blessed, and enjoy 2017!
