The Worst Person in the World (2021) dir. Joachim Trier
I always worried something would go wrong, but the things that went wrong were never what I worried about.

Under the Grease-Stained Bandages Pt. 2
Tumblr media
summary: charles is a mechanic who has made a name for himself and max is a racer who has been admiring his work for a while. the blonde wants charles on his team, but charles prefers to fly solo.
Charles sat on his front porch, twisting a singular flower between his index and thumb. His white button-up hung loosely around his neck, one too many buttons undone for what would be considered proper professional attire. A golden necklace adorned his neck. A golden ring hung from its chain, with a small inscription on its interior. His eyes drifted down to his watch, 6:59. Was he being played? Was it all for not? He began to stand up, realizing that this might’ve been the dumbest scam he’d ever fallen for when a slick, dark blue car pulled up to the sidewalk. It was an Aston Martin, but from the distance he sat at, he couldn’t tell the model or the driver. The tinted passenger window slid down, revealing the blonde’s cheeky grin. “Hop in, Frenchie!” Max called out, shooting a wink as if he knew he’d already gotten under Charles’ skin.  When the brunette stood up, his eyes carefully dragging across the frame of the car he realized that it was none other than a Valkyrie. His eyebrows raised in an impressed fashion, taking slow strides towards the car. He leaned down, resting his forearms on the passenger door’s arm and ducking his head down to stare at the man driving. “I suppose this isn’t too bad,” the brunette teased, tapping the interior of the driver’s side door. The yellow rose he had spun between his fingers earlier dropped onto the passenger seat. Charles looked at Max with a crooked smile, as if beyond proud of his offering to the other.
Max fought the butterflies that flew rampantly through his stomach as if they fought to be freed from the cocoon his body so perfectly had made for them. Pink bristled his cheeks as he delicately picked up the flower, staring so intently at the petals that one might’ve thought they’d fall away if he didn’t keep looking. Breaking away from his trance, Max tucked the rose into the small pocket in his driver-side door. His hands returned to the wheel, his finger anxiously tapping to the rhythm of the song that quietly hummed from the speakers. “You gonna get in or stare?” Max teased.  “I don’t trust strangers to drive me.” Charles retorted, staring at Max intently.  “Well, you don’t have a choice, and I can promise you I’m the better driver between us.” Max winked, a cocky smile breaking across his face. Charles rolled his eyes at the egotistical comment, knowing that, without a doubt, he was the better driver between the two. “You speak a lot to not know what you’re talking about,” the brunette mumbled as he popped open the passenger door, carefully sliding into the seat beside the blonde.

I'm still processing my intense feelings after finally seeing "Worst Person in the world", being totally blown away by it and already ranking it along with "Madeline's Madeline" as my favorite film of the 21st century. It felt so real (even with the surreal moments and scenes), so relatable, so humanistic and so of our time, touching on many relevant subjects in such an intelligent and nuanced way. At times very funny, at times very sad - but even that isn't dragged into total despair, it's infused with a dose of optimism even in the very dire situations and that's where the magic really happens. Led by the truly fantastic Renate Reinsve (a total revelation), she brings the film to absolute peak and the time stand still (freeze frame) scene deserves to go into film history and books. I dunno if a perfect film really exists, but this was the closest it got to one in my mind in recent times.
On a personal note, if i ever find love, i hope it's remotely like the one between the 3 main characters, you rarely encounter something so relatable and genuine.
