She was just what he needed, Kakashi stopped infront of his old pupil, his eyes quirking up in a smile. Oh- oh no, it was definitely going to be a mission. He only smiled like that when he had to dish them out.

"How would YOU like to go to Iwa with me? Sasuke and Naruto are off for the next week and I'd like to have a Bodyguard that I'm close to. This job gets so boring-"

He wondered what was on Sasuke's mind. Maybe it was nothing at all? Kakashi had a hard time telling when it came to this one, still it was enough for his shoulder to brush against the Uchiha's.

"What's that look for?"

Itachi? The war? It could be so much, he just didn't want to see Sasuke go tunneling back down. There was nothing good at the end of those dark burrows of the mind, just more sadness, more depressions and temptation. His book snapped shut, a hand gently clapping the younger mans shoulder.

"Want some barbecue?"

He came to Ino's shop often, usually for flowers to leave at the memorial. It was usually her father that would catch him, give him that same sad look. But after the war, after the war it was Ino that often found the Hokage wondering in. He always made his own bouquet, a small hobby he caught onto over the years, plucking flowers meant for those he mourned.

It was solemn and beautiful and it cleared that little patch of darkness in his mind as he laid them out on the counter for her to tie off.

"I don't think I ever got to talk to you that much- did I?"

He never had the chance, he thought.

So harsh.

The yank hurt his pride, just a bit, enough for his hand to stay in the air for a few moments before lowering. He understood how trauma worked, hell he had a lot of it himself but, this kid was mean as hell sometimes!

"Sasuke, perhaps we should talk more? About the feelings, you're going through?"

Something to lighten up that load a bit. Kakashi let his hands slip into his pockets as they walked, his lips pressing into a thin line behind his mask. Yeah, he'd pay for the food. An empty stomach would make anyone irritable.

Looking over his shoulder at his former teacher, his eyes narrow at the question. He figured it would be obvious why he’s so tense here.

“I don’t want to be here.” He declares, letting the words hand between them. The only reason he returns is because he has to, not out of want or need. There’s too much history here he’d rather not be reminded of. Shoving his hands in his pockets, he jerks his shoulder away from Kakashi’s grasp. 

“If you’re paying,” he says after a few moments, “lead the way.”

He was watching, honestly Sakura came such a long way. Her advancements in medical jutsu blew him out of the water! Maybe it was his age showing? Every-time he visited his old team he would be surprised at how much they've grown.

Well- most of them.

Kakashi sighed as he thought back to Sasuke, the kid was still emotionally stunted to the point of pushing others away and he could see the lingering effects it held. Naruto and Sakura still seemed to hold hope for their friend. Something that had to be admired. He waited till Sakura wrapped her work up, making himself known with a wave.

"How's my favorite pupil today?!"

She'd make him go with those first, plus- it's been a while since he spent time with Sakura. He didn't want to neglect his bond with his old students, after all, they were a part of his life as much as he was theirs.

His head tilted a bit as he thought about some of the people he could bring outside of Sakura. Gai would be a horrible bodyguard excuse but, he could use some time out of Konoha. He really wanted to avoid asking Sasuke, he's been in a mood as of late.

"If you don't want to, there's always Shizune?"
