They've both had such a long day, haven't they? It wasn't the first time that Wylan had gone by the daycare and been delivered unto him the sleepiest little girl after who knows how much playing with her friends. It's nice she gets along so well with them, though the agent imagines her frustration at the lack of energy to keep up as long as she'd like.

The last of said energy she had now spent chatting with dad on the trip home. She goes on so many tangents that even with all his experience with interrogations and somniums, he finds himself tested.

Sae is greeted by both, let your imagination decide who has more enthusiasm and affection for mom. Dinner is eaten. Another day coming to a close. Everyone had such a long schedule full of excitement, how is Wylan the last one standing? Well. That's not a problem.

"...pfft." A small chuckle escapes him, coming back from the washroom to find both of his treasures passed out on the couch. Neck rolls, and a familiar hum escapes his throat as he turns off the tv. "...mister sandman~" Sae and Seina get carefully scooped into his arms.

"Bring me two dreams." A chuckle. "And make them the cutest, that I've ever seen." Careful navigation out of the living room and towards the bedrooms. "Give them big hearts, that'll never freeze over~" ....yeah, for tonight at least until Sae wakes up again, she can share Seina's bed. The two get deposited.

"...and tell them that... something else... that rhymes with... clover? Shit. Ah well. I had the one good line at least. Goodnight you two."

a list of literary references in aitsf: nirvana initiative chapter titles

tidied up this ol' twitter thread. basically: every single chapter title in aini is a reference to a work of literature, i figured out most of them. here's an explanation of where they came from and what they mean. let us begin.

"a strange tale"/"dispossessed"/"alone" (chapter 0) reference 'the turn of the screw' by henry james.

the framing device of this novella is a group of friends reading a manuscript written by someone else. ryuki being interrogated by mizuki is something of a framing device for what we perceive as his 'side' of the story, six years ago. this is also a quintessential piece of gothic fiction, which is famously concerned with the subconscious and repression- two themes aitsf is very interested in!

"anyone imagines"/"ought to know" (ryuki chapter 1) reference the bible verse corinthians 8:2

"If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know"

naix is an ideology that has the power of religion over its believers. this quotation reflects that people who don't believe in the ideology who think they understand the nature of the world (and believe it's real) are ignorant to the fact it's a simulation.

"nothing to be done"/"go" (ryuki chapter 2) reference 'waiting for godot' by samuel beckett

"nothing to be done" is something of a reoccurring joke in the play. much time is spent watching characters act aimlessly, accomplish little, and lack purpose. these chapters in the game have a lot to do with ryuki feeling frustrated by tokiko's indecipherable philosophical ramblings.

"farewell"/"joy for anguish"/"smile for tears" (ryuki chapter 3) reference 'farewell' by anne bronte.

"And who can tell but Heaven, at last, May answer all my thousand prayers, And bid the future pay the past With joy for anguish, smiles for tears?"

this poem is about the pain of saying goodbye to a loved one. of course, "saying goodbye" is a classic euphemism for death. these titles likely reference shoma reckoning with komeji's death. the joy/anguish duo are strange parallel chapters where komeji lives or dies.

"well known"/"mind of god" (ryuki c4 r1) reference 'a brief history of time' by stephen hawking

"If we do discover a theory of everything…it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason—for then we would truly know the mind of God."

these chapters introduce us to tearer as a character, who is, of course, closely linked to naix and their ideology. naix believe they understood the nature of human existence, and accomplished the goal of knowing 'the mind of god'.

"i found me"/"past its ken" (ryuki c4 r2) reference "the masked face" by thomas hardy

"I found me in a great surging space, I" At either end a door" ... "There once complained a goosequill pen To the scribe of the Infinite Of the words it had to write Because they were past its ken."

this poem is about people with a negative outlook who struggle to comprehend that there is more to the world than they know. shoma only believed in shallow simulation theory to justify his depression. "past its ken" means beyond one's established knowledge.

"not all a dream"/"she was the universe" (ryuki chapter 5 r1) reference "darkness" by lord byron

"I had a dream, which was not all a dream. The bright sun was extinguish'd" ... "Darkness had no need Of aid from them—She was the Universe."

this poem describes an apocalypse that resembles a natural disaster. fitting that this route leads to the explosion ending, involving the collapse of the underground cave. darkness becomes "the universe"- ryuki is traumatised.

"pass mildly away"/"end where i begun" (mizuki c1) reference "a valediction: forbidding mourning" by john donne

"As virtuous men pass mildly away, And whisper to their souls to go" … "Thy firmness makes my circle just, And makes me end where I begun."

this poem is about two lovers parting, but i think the game uses it to reflect platonic relationships. kizuna has lost bibi. bibi lost mizuki. mizuki lost date. family members who love each other deeply have been apart for a long time.

"the expense of spirit"/"hell" (mizuki chapter 3) reference sonnet 129 by william shakespeare.

"The expense of spirit in a waste of shame Is lust in action..."

this poem theorises that after people satisfy their lust (their desires), they're left with shame. this could be a metaphor for chikara's experiments, but he doesn't seem to feel shame. i think it's about mizuki wanting answers about the institute until she gets them and they're painful.

"all living things"/"of arms and of man" (mizuki chapter 4 m2) references virgil's "the aenid".

"I sing of arms and of the man, fated to be an exile, who long since left the land of Troy and came to Italy to the shores of Lavinium"

i think a parallel is drawn between lien and the protag of the aenid, aeneas. he flees the fall of troy and travels to rome, becoming the original descendant of the ancient romans. lien escapes the 'tragedy' of his life of crime and becomes something of a hero to kizuna.

"who's there"/"bid the soldiers shoot" (mizuki chapter 4 m2/m3) reference the first and final lines of william shakespeare's "hamlet".

the first line is spoken by a guard who hears the ghost of hamlet sr. in this route, jin's corpse is found in the freezer... not quite a ghost. the final line is spoken by fortinbras, an invading prince, upon storming the palace and finding the corpses of the whole cast. he commands the shots to commemorate the deaths of the royalty. lien and kizuna escape among the gunfire of chieda's armed goons... some commemoration.

"all that we are" (mizuki c5 m2) is a buddha quote.

“All that we are is the result of what we have thought: it is founded on our thoughts and made up of our thoughts. If a man speak or act with an evil thought, suffering follows him as the wheel follows the hoof of the beast that draws the wagon…. If a man speak or act with a good thought, happiness follows him like a shadow that never leaves him.”

this chapter precedes gen and amame's end. gen highlights that he considers amame to be a naturally kind and loving person in a way that others haven't been towards him. this quotation implies that good things follow kind people, which doesn't follow considering the tragic end amame gets here.

"sweet silent thought" (mizuki chapter 5 m3) references shakespeare's sonnet 30

When to the sessions of sweet silent thought I summon up remembrance of things past, I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought, And with old woes new wail my dear time's waste

this poem is about regrets. when you think "sweet silent thoughts" (contemplate your life), you feel unhappy and consumed by what-ifs. interesting that this chapter is the direct opposite of the poem- lien and kizuna take their chance and run away together. no regrets!

"births"/"the end of craving" (mizuki c5 m1) is a buddha quote once more.

simply put, to reach the end of craving is to achieve the titular nirvana and a higher state of being.

"braver than all flowers" (epilogue) references "proof of immortality "by william carlos williams

"for there is one thing braver than all flowers; richer than clear gems; wider than the sky"

this is a sort of humorous poem about how the one thing that humans throughout history have in common is ignorance. maybe it's a ref to how the mizukis used their wit and investigation skills to overcome that ignorance and win the day?

"all this happened, more or less" (ryuki diverge) references the opening line of slaughterhouse-five by kurt vonnegut.

this is regarded as a crazy opening line for a crazy novel. it's the literary equivalent of "well, that happened" for better or worse, much like this ending.

the only currently missing reference is 'traveler'/'left behind'.

PSA. / 2024 goals !

the reason i haven't been writing a lot is i've mostly been on my OC trying to play catch up on her lore and worldbuilding. you can find her in the pinned post . also i've been planning what i want to do for mizuki for 2024, and my interest very normal love for best girl only gets better each year. i just hope to do justice by her in my own way as i figure out what i'm doing post AI1.

as i'm canon divergent and i have a few things to talk about that i'll be hoping to capture or discuss hopefully some of this year that are parts of my mizuki's canon ! so i'll try doing it in uh, the most organized way because one goal i have at least for 2024 is better blog organization . it's too late to make a sideblog for musings / etc . THINGS I'LL BE DOING THIS YEAR . - focusing on catch up. unless a thread is requested to be dropped, please message me if so, i'll be continuing it. some i will drop for my own sanity, not because i don't want to write with you again! - seasonal / holidays asks will just be holiday asks with no specific content save for people i owe, ex: bubblez' kizuna or thane's trunks, etc. why? i think mizuki deserves to celebrate the holidays or anything remotely happy because while aiba is arguably as of now her best support system, let's be real, i genuinely want to find and work on any of her relationships because she's severely lacking in support. even from 2023. i'll try to stay more on the ball for again, my own sanity this year when i reblog them. - i will be writing my version of post-canon mizuki and child mizuki, that goes from her time before adoption from date, aka with shoko and renju which will be tagged appropriately because honestly mizuki doesn't know many reliable adult figures in her life, and it makes me very sad that she's arguably more mature than...most people save say, boss or pewter or hitomi etc. she deserves better! just because AI2 certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea, and it isn't mine in a LOT of ways, i still took stuff from it, and i don't think it's fair to halt mizuki at 12 forever just because we fairly have critique of NI / AINI and not let her grow up and experience a hopeful future and more bonds to fill the huge hole in her heart. let her be happy is the goal !

now i'm working on mizuki's post canon verse, as i've restarted aitsf 1 to move to aitsf 2, where i'll take a few things that i won't likely budge on unless you meet me halfway !

the verse title for anything post-canon and generally for 18 year old mizuki / teen mizuki or post explosion mizuki will be this verse tag!

now onto her post canon details i do have figured out.

mizuki and aiba are partners. one thing that's consistent is through her time with date, that can still be a thing because they ARE a family, albeit i feel estranged granted the resolution route is canon, so mizuki never really got to bond with him, get her aphonia cured, vice versa, is aiba's care through time in his eye socket appreciating the girl's strength and endurance and intelligence in both games. you can have more than one partner, and until / if we have another game and mizuki possibly gets another partner and i debate the chemistry, aiba is mizuki's partner and aiba is generally mostly with mizuki, but that doesn't mean she isn't with date too. she can love more than one person. and both dates are equally dear to her.

mizuki was still experimented on until 3 years old at horadori institute, albeit she has blurry memories at best, and i debate if she should fully remember! one factor of her godlike superhuman strength. but she also is trained in most japanese martial arts she can get her hands on! she is NOT a clone of bibi, bibi doesn't exist whatsoever despite me enjoying her personality, even if i felt it was made to mimic mizuki herself, if others who have muses with canon bonds to bibi, please talk to me so we can plot it out if you keep her as part of your canon ! as long as we meet halfway i'm more than happy to work with you !

mizuki is still a rookie detective and psyncer at ABIS. in my canon, she actually looks to ryuki, also new, but older for advice and i like to think as dual protagonists that they should have been, they get to do some cases together! only if a ryuki is willing of course.

for now, she's working on small to medium cases with aiba. the explosion still happened that took her vision clean out. she does this because of the gruesome history she has, not wanting others to suffer the same kind of unimaginable trauma she has with both biological parents murdered in various means and i'm still debating whether tearer even exists. he likely will, and if people also have the other culprit's actions in their canon, please talk to me too and i'll work together with you on that !

mizuki still runs lemniscate and sunfish pocket. she doesn't have the heart yet to really let go of her neglectful biological father's companies, even if he didn't care for her in a way she needed. in time, i'll see how she feels about this, as i do plan for mizuki to continue her education, as the girl is extremely intelligent.

mizuki is still best friends with iris, but my mizuki also considers amame and kizuna two of her really close friends, but they aren't a sister to her like iris is. they're certainly caring of her, and she'd protect them with her life, but she isn't as close to them as iris, and all of them do hang out together from what i've seen.

my mizuki is a lot more skeptical for the kizunas out there, of lien. she isn't comfortable with his advances towards one of her best friends and generally is a lot more protective. that said, it's all according to people who write kizzy. naturally she's fiercely protective of iris, who now is someone who works for her too as the president of an entertainment company.

my mizuki comes from the MIZUKI ROUTE in terms of character development but NOT THE PLOT EVENTS . iris is not inhabited by so sejima. date and mizuki DO bond like a father and daughter. date unless a date talks to me, DOES cure her aphonia or it's hitomi herself like canon because hitomi is the mom she deserves imho. but i tend to take away the development of her character and their relationship otherwise i feel the date family bond is....pretty estranged or mizuki is MUCH more doubtful of date caring for her at all granted the routes and how she tends to get overlooked a lot.

basically i want to as one of i'm sure other mizuki-mun's, give her my best in my own way, at my own pace !

and those are my goals as i replay the games (again!) . i hope to keep developing mizuki and thank you for being so patient with me as always, everyone ! also kinda sorry for the long post but it was all necessary !

Tajikistan is a landlocked country in central Asia, bordered by Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, China, and Kyrgyzstan. It is the official home of the Tajiks, an Iranian ethnic group. Tajikistan was home to many well-known early civilizations including the ancient city of Sarazm, the Oxus civilization, Andronovo culture, and many others. This area experienced the rise and fall of many empires including the soviet empire in 1929. Within the years of the soviet occupation, Tajikistan was home to a literary explosion. The Tajik literary centers include Bukhara and Samarkand in what is now Uzbekistan where there is a large Tajik population. The literature that has survived from Tajikistan and other large Tajik populations is predominantly Socialist Realism, a genre expressed largely by writer, communist, and educator Sadriddin Aini. His work also includes novels and memoirs. Another writer is Abu’l Qasem Lahuti, who wrote “socialist realist” verse and lyrical poetry. Another writer is Mirzo Tursunzoda, he collected Tajik Oral Literature and wrote extensively on social change in Tajikistan. Tajikistan has a rich and varied body of poets, novelists, and intellectuals that were inspired by these writers.

You’ll have a harder time finding people that Lyla dislikes. She’s not one to create or play into animosity and would rather the various employees get along. Of course, she can’t exactly talk to anyone all the time so it falls to her trying to get Wylan to do that. And you can imagine how that goes. She looks upon Boss and Pewter quite fondly, and until Eira leaves during the 6 years ... well, it’s neutral. Eira doesn’t really talk to the AI.

The other AI however is probably a more interesting question to consider. They’re able to talk and network almost all the time after all.

Aiba: Good relations. They’re both the more ‘work minded’ of the cast around ABIS so the times that Mizuki or Date and Wylan work together the amount of productivity is likely to be higher.

Tama: ...mixed. Most of Tama’s mannerisms and jokes are a little much for the more timid ai-ball, not to mention that Ryuki and Wylan would be mostly indifferent to each other. Ryuki’s a Date fanboy, and I get the feeling he works with but has less care for the other agents like Wylan. Maybe that warms up post AINI?

Gouma: Nervous. As much as Jin’s AI probably gets along with both her and her partner, the feeling isn’t necessarily reciprocated and their very brash forward behavior can be confusing at best and scary at worst.

Marco: Great!!! Probably the one she enjoys talking with the most, when they permit it. The shyness of Bibi’s ai-ball doesn’t inexplicably vanish with Lyla but there’s a better understanding with them than the others undoubtedly.

Mizuki looks up from her manga ready to retort the stupid senile old man. It's instinctual for her, after all. But really, she's the one who's reading manga when on the clock for work with ABIS. It'd make sense for someone to scold her. This isn't about that. Date's got something else going on with her.

"What are you talking about? I--" That's when a flash of horror hits her in the face after realization pops. Features sink, and then she leaps to her feet. As if she'd seen a ghost. Or felt it. Touched it. Equal parts spooky horror reaction.

"YOU DIDN'T EAT IT? BUT I LEFT THE BOX AND CARD ON THE COUNTER! That means the cake's been... sitting on the counter for two weeks?! Oh gross. So gross oh my god. How did you not smell it? How does it not smell now? I know your place is gross now you moved back in to it but-"

Mizuki rolls her head back, clutching it before she throws herself forward once again to shake Date's shoulders. If you think about it, she's kinda returning a hug? Hm.

checklist / note to myself *

gonna work this month on all fall related, halloween too , asks , so if anyone wants to send some, the meme is HERE ! don't be a stranger , i follow people for a reason ! i know i owe in that meme which is my focus because shorter things right now are my bread and butter , trunks, kizzy , etc ! it's still open all this month , as i'm someone who will write holidays long after the holiday is due .

in the past i used to punish myself a lot for just . . . not feeling it writing-wise. that doesn't mean i think i shouldn't say sorry if i have been keeping others , but just not to make it something toxic ; like a punishment or measurement of my worth as a writer.

i also think once i clear some of my drafts , feel comfortable enough to , i'd like to ask for a lot of people's interest trackers . i need to be more initiative (no pun) into getting to know new mutuals , all of you whom have tons of talent . that includes me plotting in time, mizuki's psyncing into your muse's brain if ... you'll let her . and don't worry, mizuki is sturdy as hell she's definitely equipped to see the unexplainable horrors . . she's lived it too.

i'm still working slowly on my thoughts, as my mizuki is aini divergent 90 percent , save aiba is her partner at present , shared with date of course ! but usually since she's more active in my canon , mizuki is someone i think would be a great longterm ABIS agent, but also someone who wants to go to college, and should . she's above average IQ in spades , but with running renju's talent agency and sunfish pocket , and also being a special agent to a secret organization within the police force ? she's busy.

of course there's also so much so so much to explore with her in the original, which is in my top five. lots of things i want to explore and many wishlists to be had . so yeah , i think mizuki needs a break before she starts college at some point, learns to balance all her responsibilities while still enjoying being a teenager .

that verse will probably be a long time in work , and aini will need to be replayed , and i'll try to keep the high salt about it turned more into something . . . productive ? like worldbuilding and story building for mizuki ! but yes , i love exploring all the ages she's been listed as, at present she's probably in the middle of being 18. i have to check the times of the games whoops. but please know if you're expecting only one version i switch between both equally . if you met her at 12, you'll likely get more of her at 12 unless we plot a timeskip. if you met her at 18 you'll get her at 18 ! rewinding to 12 might be a little weird unless your muse is a hidden psyncer boss didn't tell her about .

so yes, fall memes, draft clearing and some dropping, mizuki aini divergent verse , wish-list (over time) and reaching out to an interest checker or just honestly, send me an ask anytime. i may not get to it fastest , but i will . i have drafts as disorganized as i am. but this is kinda stuff that i'll be focusing on in the next few months, fall memes and fall things the primary for this one, albeit with some drafts !

Ertanians - supplementary material

Let me list a few fun facts that come with the fanfic Ertanians.

Names Most of the names in the fic come (at least partially) from random name generators. Most of the full names of the Guardian siblings were picked syllable by syllable according to what name came up in the generator. However, the short versions of their names are mostly not random. Razi comes from the previous fic (The Dam). In Czech “rázný” means “vigorous, resolute”, which was the characterisation I was going for in Razi‘s case. Raznedeadra is made up of random syllables, but it does sound like the Skyrim elemental spirits, daedras. Svea literally means Sweden in Swedish. I was listening to Ruina Imperii by Sabaton a lot, and the word does sound mighty and powerful to me. Sveasilovudie is made up of random syllables. Itsel, or Itsellenisaan, is a part of a verse in the Finnish song Täällä Pohjantähden Alla, “siitä suojakseni peiton minä itselleni saan” meaning “I make a blanket to cover myself with”. Itsel’s full name basically means “I make for myself”. Insa and Insattamirko are made up of random syllables, though Mirko is a variation on the Czech name Miroslav and the beginning of the name sounds like “insatiable”. Aini is “a word of Germanic origin, cognate with English ‘one’ in the sense of uniqueness” [introduction to The Kalevala by Keith Bosley]. It’s the base of the Finnish girl’s name Aino, which was my second variant, but in the end I went with Aini for reasons. Aintdonnensali is made up of random syllables. The “four hundred names” were supplied by a random name generator, and so are the words “Ertan” and “erdack”. I think I have a thing for words beginning with a wovel at this point.

Inspiration for Ertan The basic feature of Ertan, erdack viper implantation is already laid out in The Dam. I just took it to a gruesome logical end and wallowed in the suffering of babies. Funnily, Ertan is a lot more Earth-inspired than Neverhood-inspired. The average age, the school system, the medical profession, a lot of it leans on Earth tropes rather than Neverhood tropes. It was refreshing to write, honestly.

Element symbols Every Guardian generation carries some variation of the five element symbols on their bodies. In the Ertanian generation, the symbols take the form of birth marks located on the top of the left hand. The same symbol is mirrored on their familiars’ foreheads, but those are actually tattoos. Tattooing and otherwise decorating familiars is a common thing in the Ertanian culture.

Thunderstorm I didn’t fit this into the fic in the end, but Itsel and Insa call themselves Storm, and once they form a pack with Aini, they call themselves Thundestorm! Itsel and Insa would have autographed their note to Nike as Storm, but they aren’t sure he would get it. So they draw the rainy cloud at least.
