suggestions for parents: staying patient with your teens
Patience is one of the most important skills to learn as a parent, yet one of the most difficult ones to implement. How many times have you wanted to grab your teen and shake them, or just say “Because I said so” rather than dealing with the issue at hand with composure?
As a parent, we can think of patience as the ability to deal with difficult situations or problems in a calm and rational manner. Feelings may still be a part of the thought processes and the discussion at hand, but they’re able to be brought to the table in a level-headed manner. Patience also involves a level of compassion and love for self.
Science shows us how important patience is to teen and adolescent development. A 2023 study showed that children who had parents who emphasized patience had higher levels of motivation and greater self-esteem than children who did not. Studies have also shown that when parents use patience, it is a modeled behavior for children, in turn making them calm and patient.. It has also been proven that being patient with our children, leads to us being more patient with ourselves. Being patient with ourselves is proven to lead to higher self-esteem, greater motivation, and improved mood.
Here are five things you can try to make sure you’re staying patient with your teen:
Understand what makes you lose your patience. Take note of times when you feel like you’ve been quick to anger, or had a difficult time staying level-headed. If you can understand when these situations occur, you may be able to avoid them in the future. You can try de-escalating before you lose your patience, letting your teen know that you’re struggling to stay patient, or removing yourself from the situation.
Understand why you lose your patience. If you’ve identified what makes you lose your patience, you can also understand why those things make you struggle to stay calm and rational. Is there a theme to all of the things you’ve identified? Identifying why those things make you lose your patience allows you to communicate that to your teen. Teenagers are smart – help them help you.
Ensure there is open communication. Your teen may struggle to stay patient too. Create open communication in your home. Allow for space for your teen to tell you when they’re having a hard time staying patient. If they know they can share things with you, and you’ll be patient and calm in the face of whatever they share, they’re more likely to maintain a level of openness with you.
Practice and plan for de-escalation. We will all have moments where despite our best efforts, we do lose our patience, fail to stay calm, or struggle to communicate rationally. Make a plan for when those moments happen. Find a strategy that works for you when you do lose your patience, and see if you can find one that works for your teen as well. Both of you need to be calm and reset in order to return to the original problem in a productive way.
Turn that patience on yourself. Being patient with yourself leads to greater patience with your child. You will never be perfect as a parent, there is nothing called “Perfect”. You will not always have a kind, caring, response to your teen. You will never be able to keep the house conflict-free. Be patient with yourself. Be kind to yourself. Take a few moments.
Patience can be a difficult practice. Be patient with yourself as you grow, but ensure you’re committed to learning. If you’re interested in learning more about parenting and patience, visit GenZ&U!

Coping with Burnout: Student Edition
Many of us seek higher education late in life. Being a student is absolutely exhausting. Between school, your personal life, and a job, your time is stretched thin, and taking care of yourself often becomes the last priority. This leads to burnout. But what is burnout, and how do you address it?
Burnout is an individual’s response to chronic stress. It develops progressively, and is acute or chronic. It tends to manifest both physically and psychologically, with people experiencing everything from insomnia, weight loss/ gain, and chronic fatigue, to irritability, a loss of joy in day-to-day life (called anhedonia), and decreased emotionality. Burnout impacts all areas of life. It creates issues in professional environments, because of its effects on your productivity and work attitude. It can also interfere with your personal life by influencing your interpersonal intersections, your overall ability to be a good friend/partner/parent/child, or your general attitude toward those around you.
Among students in the USA, ⅓ report feeling burnt out, and 4 in 5 will experience burnout at some point in their academic career. Knowing this, and that it can cause emotional disconnect, decreased productivity, and increased physical health issues, how do you cope with it?
Research shows that the most effective ways to cope with burnout are emotional venting and behavioral disengagement. Emotional venting could be anything from talking with friends and family about how you’re feeling, to joining support groups or online chats, to formally seeking therapy. Emotional venting allows you to release some of the physical and psychological stress builds in the body, without adding the strain of problem-solving. Problem-solving is important to coping with burnout as well – but that comes later, in the recovery period when some of your burnout symptoms begin to reduce. Behavioral disengagement is what it sounds like disengaging with the behaviors that have led to your burnout. When you have academic obligations this can be tough; however, it’s possible to find little ways to reduce stress. Sleep in on the weekends. Skip a week of clubs or extra circulars. Set aside time each day to take breaks, and when you have formal time off from school, do not engage with school during that time.
Burnout is rough to experience, but there are ways to cope. Give yourself grace, space, and time to recover. If you’d like to learn more about burnout, its effects, and ways to cope, come over to GenZ&U.

In one celebrated example, a Belgian man named Pierre de Rudder had suffered a crushing blow to his leg from a falling tree. He had a compound fracture and the member became infected, but he refused amputation. The victim was almost unable to move, even with the help of crutches. A devout Catholic, he had no funds to travel to Lourdes itself, but was able to convince his employer to pay for his trip to the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in Oostacker, Belgium. The date for the pilgrimage was picked as April 7, 1875.
To understand what happened to de Rudder it is important to know the details of his medical record. A surgeon, Dr. Affenaer, had had to remove a piece of bone that had broken away and had inserted itself in the tissues. The bones were thus separated by a space of over one inch, and the patient had endured endless suffering during the eight years that had elapsed since the accident. De Rudder had seen many doctors, all of whom stated that nothing could be done, short of an amputation, to relieve the pain. Healing the broken bones was naturally out of the question. In January, 1875, another specialist, Dr. Van Hoestenberghe, had seen the patient and stated:
Rudder had an open wound at the top of the leg. In this wound one could see the two bones separated by a distance of three centimeters. There was no sign of healing. Pierre was in great pain and suffered thus since eight years before. The lower part of the leg could be moved in all directions. The heel could be lifted in such a way as to fold the leg in the middle. It could be twisted, with the heel in front and the toes in back, all these movements being only restricted by the soft tissues.
Another doctor named Verriest confirmed this statement. Nine days before the pilgrimage the wound was observed by one Jean Houtsaeghe. He saw the ends of the two bones and confirmed that Pierre had another wound on the top of his foot. Several other witnesses saw the state of his leg as he changed his bandages. All were struck by the fact that the wound was in very poor condition. A detailed description is probably unnecessary.
Given the primitive state of hygiene at the time (Lister had discovered antiseptics that very year, but his techniques were not yet in wide use) it is safe to say that Rudder was in deplorable condition. When he started his journey he spent two hours to reach the train station, walking the mile and a half distance with the help of his wife, using two crutches. A railroad employee named Bloome carried him into the train, but when he saw how his leg was swaying helplessly he couldn’t help but saying: “What are you going to Oostacker for, in such a state as yours? Why don’t you stay home instead?” “Others have been cured in Oostacker,” said Rudder. “So why not me?”
Finally they reached the little cave, where the people had erected a statute of Our Lady of Lourdes. Rudder sat down, but the crowd was such around him that his leg was repeatedly hit by passers-by, causing him great pain. He had tried to walk around the cave, like the other pilgrims, but after doing so twice he had to give up and sat down in exhaustion. He prayed. He begged to be allowed to work again, so that he could support his wife and children, and could stop relying on the charitable gifts of others. He felt deeply moved, overwhelmed by a strange feeling. Beside himself, he rose, went through the crowd, and knelt before the statue. … Then he suddenly realized what he had done! In joy, he began walking around the cave, and his wife saw him thus: “What happened?” she asked. “What are you doing? What are you doing?” She looked troubled, became dizzy, and fainted on the spot.
Rudder was immediately taken to a nearby house and his leg was examined. Not only was the wound neatly closed, but the leg had become completely normal again. The bones were no longer broken. Both legs were of equal length. Rudder was walking normally, and only experienced slight discomfort in wearing shoes again. When he arrived home, surrounded by the crowd like a national hero, his daughter threw herself into his arms, in tears. But his younger son, who had never seen him without his crutches, could not believe that this man was actually his father.
As soon as he heard of the case, Rudder’s physician, Dr. Affenaer, rushed to his house. He was thus able to observe him the day following the cure, in the morning. He carefully examined the leg and was especially struck by the fact that the bones were perfectly smooth at the place where they had been broken. This examination was performed in the presence of several witnesses, who saw Dr. Affenaer break into tears and heard him say: “You are completely cured, de Rudder. Your leg is like that of a newborn baby.”
Dr. Van Hoestenberghe also came to see his patient, but he did so only reluctantly because he refused to believe in any sort of miracle. He found Pierre working in his yard, digging. He was still incredulous and asked Rudder to submit to his examination. His patient, in a happy mood, jumped up and down before him to convince him he was really cured! The doctor found a scar just below the knee and another one on the foot. He also discovered that the bone was now unbroken and smooth throughout. Pierre was indeed walking normally. Pierre de Rudder walked normally until his death from pneumonia, twenty-three years later, in 1898.
[...]
The story could have ended on the same note of speculative wonder that characterizes most accounts of paranormal events, had it not been for Dr. Van Hoestenberghe, a man of high intelligence and integrity, a genuine scientist who had become convinced of the reality of the “miracle” but had not allowed this belief to blind him when the documentation of the facts was concerned.
Dr. Van Hoestenberghe asked and was granted permission to exhume the body and perform an autopsy on Pierre de Rudder. The operation was performed on May 24, 1899. The physician amputated both legs at the knee. The bones were examined and photographed. The pictures, which I have obtained, show with great clarity the deformation of the bones of the left leg. The healing has occurred in such a way, however, that the two legs are of equal length and the weight of the body can be equally supported. A fragment of bone is seen to be missing. The autopsy report was signed and published as part of a complete paper on the Rudder case, co-authored by Van Hoestenberghe, Deschamps, and Royer, in the Revue des Questions Scientifiques, in its issue of October, 1899.
There is no explanation for the piece of healthy white bone, over one inch long, which connects the two sections still showing the traces of breakage. In their article the three doctors raise the hypothesis of faith-healing, that Charcot had formulated in connection with his analysis of several mental cases. The hypothesis, in their view, must be discounted.
They find it hard to admit that the nervous system, even in the most advanced cases of mental imbalance, could restore the destroyed tissues in violation of the known laws of natural healing of the body: “To state this [they say] is to place oneself in opposition to the principles of medical science.” Several weeks are required for the healing of broken bones in the simplest cases. Instantaneous cure is out of the question.

Best Time to Visit Orlando and Kissimmee
For us, November and December really is the best time to visit Orlando and Kissimmee. It's the time of year that brings pumpkin spice and everything nice.
From sparkling parties, festive food, lower crowds and glorious weather, there are so many reasons to visit Orlando now. And we'll tell you why!
November & December is The Best Time to Visit Orlando Because...
The Weather is Perfect
It Blows Hot & Cold
November and December is the best time to visit Orlando for good weather. It still feels like summer, but without the sizzling temperatures. It's the perfect combination of hot and cold. And by cold, I mean Florida cold!
Warm Sunny Days: If you've put that swimsuit to the back of the closet until next year, go dig it out! October to December is the absolute perfect season to hit the awesome Orlando water parks. Disney has Typhoon Lagoon (also Blizzard Beach, closed until Jan 6). Universal has Volcano Bay. SeaWorld has Aquatica.
Cooler Nights: It can get a little cooler in the evenings. Which makes it a perfect excuse to put on that cheesy holiday sweater. Or head to Universal and wrap up in a Hogwarts robe while you cast a spell with your interactive wand. There's hot butterbeer to keep you warm.
Entertainment is in Festive Overdrive
The Orlando Theme Parks Are Mind Blowing
If you've never visited Orlando in November or December before, you're in for jaw dropping entertainment! It's the best time to visit Orlando for festive happenings. There's something on in all the parks and lots of local events too.
The highlights for us are Disney and Universal.
Disney: Nov 8 - Jan 6 Magical at any time of the year, but the holidays get an extra dose of sparkling pixie dust. Most holiday events started November 8th. The verriest merriest party on the planet is on select nights at Magic Kingdom. Queen Elsa lights up the castle in shimmering splendor every night. Hollywood Studios is in full Flurries of Fun. Epcot brings out yet another fabulous festival from November 18th.
Universal: Nov 17 - Jan 6 The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is spellbinding during the holidays. When dusk falls, magical holiday projections transform Hogwarts Castle into a dazzling spectacle. Universal Holiday Parade is packed with holiday cheer. Grinchmas takes over Seuss Landing in Islands of Adventure.
Disney Christmas Events | Universal Holidays | SeaWorld Christmas Celebration | Snowing in Celebration | Holiday Home Tours | Ice! at Gaylord Palms | What's On Guide | Thanksgiving Dining |
Less Crowds to Deal With
It Makes More Room for Fun
November and December is the best time to visit Orlando for crowds. Apart from the insanely busy Christmas/New Year week, it's much more manageable in the theme parks. That means shorter wait lines for attractions. Perhaps you'll be able to snag a rare dining reservation. The roads are quieter and the stores aren't as crowded. Apart from Black Friday that is!
And Less Crowds Mean More Room for Selfies and Photo Ops!
Both Disney and Universal have awesome instagram worthy locations. Special walls and backdrops are everywhere.
