Tax cuts initially enacted during Republican trifectas in the past 25 years slashed taxes disproportionately for the wealthy and profitable corporations, severely reducing federal revenues.
Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) has also introduced legislation to make permanent President Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, at a cost of roughly $2.6 trillion over the next decade.
If Congress wants to decrease deficits, it should look first toward reversing tax cuts that largely benefited the wealthy, which were responsible for the United States’ current fiscal outlook.

I wrote a letter for the Action Network letter campaign: Tell Congress to Restore Tax Fairness for Entertainment Workers!.
As working-class musicians, stage managers, singers, dancers, actors, stagehands and other arts workers across the country return to work, the last thing they need is a tax code that punishes them for seeking work. The Performing Artist Tax Parity Act fixes this problem! Most arts workers are employees, not contractors, who spend 20 to 30 percent of their income on necessary expenses — such as to pay for transportation, a talent agent, or equipment — to gain employment. Unfortunately, the last tax reform bill eliminated the ability of arts workers to deduct these common business expenses. Ask your member of Congress to cosponsor the bipartisan Performing Artist Tax Parity Act, H.R. 2871 introduced by Reps. Judy Chu (D-CA) and Vern Buchanan (R-FL). The bill updates the Qualified Performing Artist (QPA) deduction, modernizing a provision that has been on the books since it was signed into law in the 1980s by President Reagan, so that middle-class arts workers today can deduct their common business expenses.
Can you join me and write a letter? Click here: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/tell-congress-to-restore-tax-fairness-for-entertainment-workers?source=email&
Thanks!

The bi-annual changing of the clocks takes place this Sunday, but some federal lawmakers hope it's the last time we “spring forward” as they push to make daylight saving time permanent.
Driving the news: Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has reintroduced the Sunshine Protection Act, which was surprisingly approved by a unanimous vote in the Senate last year but wasn't voted on by the House.
The bill would eliminate the changing of clocks and “if enacted, the U.S. would not ‘fall back’ in November and would enjoy a full year of DST, instead of only eight months,” according to a fact sheet on the bill.
Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.) introduced companion legislation in the House.
It’s unclear if Congress will take up the legislation again but both bills have been referred to committees. The offices of Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy did not immediately return a request for comment.
Flashback: Daylight saving time used to run from April to October but the Energy Policy Act of 2005 extended DST by approximately four weeks from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November.
Lose an hour Sunday with time change
The big picture: The official time switch is 2 am local time Sunday — clocks are set forward one hour meaning we “lose” an hour — as daylight saving time returns after four months of standard time.
Sunrise and sunset will be about one hour later Sunday than on Saturday.
Hawaii and Arizona do not observe daylight saving time with the exception of the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona.
If federal legislation is not approved, clocks will “fall back” to standard time on Sunday, Nov. 5.
Why it matters: Health groups have called for an end to the seasonal shifting of clocks, a ritual first adopted in the U.S. more than a century ago.
The switch to daylight saving time “carries many health and accident risks and is misaligned with human circadian biology,” said the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, which is in favor of moving to “permanent, year-round standard time.”
The change affects sleep schedules and can make it hard for kids and their parents to adjust.
More than two-thirds of Americans want to stop changing their clocks, according to a March 2022 YouGov poll.
A study in the journal Current Biology predicts that year-round daylight saving time could prevent 36,550 deer deaths, 33 human deaths, 2,054 human injuries and $1.19 billion in collision costs annually.
States push for daylight saving changes
Meanwhile, 19 states have passed bills or resolutions since 2018 to make daylight saving time year-round if Congress acts, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
Florida was the first to pass legislation in 2018 and Colorado moved forward with making daylight saving permanent last year.
Other states that have taken action are: Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
California voters approved the Proposition 7 ballot initiative in 2018 but legislative action hasn't been acted on.
The latest: For the 2023 state legislative sessions, DST is on policy agendas in 22 states where 50 bills and resolutions are pending, per the National Conference of State Legislatures legislation tracker. Bills in Virginia and Wyoming were voted down.
23 of the proposed bills would authorize permanent daylight time and 15 would move to standard time.
Other states with pending legislation include: Alaska, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Yes, but: Federal law says states can unilaterally move to standard time, but must have the approval of Congress to adopt year-round daylight saving time.

Congressman Alex Mooney · Americans will soon be forced to move their clocks back and lose an hour of sunlight. Changing our clocks twice a year is inconvenient and unnecessary. That’s why I’ve co-sponsored Vern Buchanan’s H.R. 1279 to making daylight saving time permanent! #LockTheClock

Snow White
Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs
Director: David Hand
Cast: Adriana Caselotti (Snow White), Lucille La Verne (Evil Queen), Roy Atwell (Doc), Pinto Colvig (Grumpy and Sleepy), Otis Harlan (Happy), Scotty Mattraw (Bashful), Billy Gilbert (Aneezy), Eddie Collings (Dopey), Harry Stockwell (Prince), Moroni Olsen (Mirror), Stuart Buchanan (the Huntsman)
Genre: musical, fantasy
Year of release: 1937
Animated film from Walt Disney Productions released by RKO Radio Pictures based from the fairytale registered by the Brothers Grimm around 1812. Story tells about Snow White, a princess, who is attacked by a huntsman hired by her stepmother, the Queen, who married her father before his death. Running away, she meets the seven dwarfs and starts living with them after the hunter doesn’t kill her. The Queen decides to do it by herself and poisons Snow White, that faints and is later awakened by a “true love’s kiss” from the Prince.
The original story has a different ending, just like all other fairytales, but I believe even this version tells some important lessons, such as the jealousy and how being controlled by it can be destructive. But also, a sense of freedom must be given to women, as Snow White was able to find when living in the forest, away from her life as a princess in the castle.

Forgiveness for me, but not for thee.
Tumblr media
July 6, 2023
As usual whenever they see cruelty inflicted upon a group of Americans to which they don't belong, Republicans are positively giddy over the recent Supreme Court decision prohibiting President Biden's plan to forgive government-financed student loans. In a case brought by a clutch of red states with dubious legal standing, the six corrupt hacks on the Court arbitrarily ruled that Biden lacked the authority to expunge the repayment of loans owed by around 43 million individuals and totaling some $430 billion in debt principal.
Compare this to the nearly $800 billion in Paycheck Protection Program loans the federal government doled out over the last three years of which 92% (over $700 billion) were granted full or partial forgiveness, according to the Small Business Administration. While initially intended to shore up small businesses that suffered during the COVID pandemic, millions went instead to companies owned by wealthy celebrities, including Tom Brady and Khloe Kardashian, as well as more than $120 million to companies that actually prospered during COVID.
Grifting Republican congress members also grabbed a slice of the PPP pie and had their loans forgiven. Most are the same hypocrites who expressed outrage that Gen Xers, Millennials and Zoomers would not be saddled with crushing debt for years to come. And are now delighted that they still will be. Let's look at some examples.
Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA), who called President Biden's student loan forgiveness program a "giveaway," had his own $947,100 PPP loan forgiven.
Rep. Kevin Hern (R-OK) called the SCOTUS decision "awesome news." He had a $1.07 million PPP erased.
Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) harrumphed that taxpayers "should not be forced to pay the bills of the 13% of Americans with student loan debt." His $2.7 million PPP loan got entirely wiped off the books.
Other GOP members of Congress who enjoyed substantial PPP loan forgiveness include Ralph Norman ($306,520), Vicki Hartzler ($451,200), Matt Gaetz ($476,000), Lori Chavez-DeRemer ($1.3 million), Roger Williams ($1.43 million), Carol Miller ($3.1 million) and Brett Guthrie (and eye-popping $4.3 million). Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona added two more.
Markwayne Mullin had more than $1.4 million in pandemic loans forgiven. He represents 489,000 eligible [student] borrowers that were turned down today. Marjorie Taylor Greene had more than $180,000 forgiven. She represents 91,800 eligible borrowers who were turned down today.
Republican politicians are fiercely opposed to transforming government loans into grants for ordinary citizens. But they're just fine with businesses doing it. As long as they can get in on the action, too.
