Hi! I’m wondering if you have any book recommendations for me after I’ve read the whole Code Name Verity verse? I’m specifically looking for WW2 historical fiction similar (or not) to cnv:)
Hiii! Here are some WWII historical fiction recommendations to fill the Veritiverse void!
Secondary school level:
“Waiting for Anya” - Michael Morpurgo: a young teenager in a French village gets caught up in a resistance circle that helps escapees cross the border towards Spain
“Number the Stars” - Lois Lowry: a Danish girl and her family help their jewish neighbours (and close friends) escape towards safety
Young Adult:
“Salt to the Sea” - Ruta Sepetys: it follows a group of young people as they try to reach the harbour in Prussia during Operation Hannibal. Each of them has a secret. The chapters are short and easy to follow
“All the Light We Cannot See” - Anthony Doerr: it tells the story of a blind French girl and an orphan German boy, alternating between the past (their childhood and the beginning of the war) and the ‘present day’ (by the end of the war)... I personally adored the way their stories interconnected
“The Book Thief” - Markus Zusak: it’s not exactly like CNV, the tone is another, but it has a very interesting way of showing the way the Nazi government oppressed its own people

I was overcome with a wave of sadness over my grandfather and his house and his things that weren’t ours any more, and all the summers that would never come back.

While the music played, we were not doing anything but listening. We were not at war. We were not enemies. We weren’t anybody special or different from each other – just people listening. People listening to music together.

The river has a voice that doesn’t die. It is inhuman and ancient as starlight.

It felt as though time had stopped still. Maybe we were already dead and this was purgatory, circling in the frozen dark forever, looking for an enemy that might not exist.

I finally read The Enigma Game, some more Jamie Beaufort-Stuart sketches (ft. his wee sister Julie and an angsty Maddie moment)

There was strength in [the kiss], and hunger, and control, and it was like standing on the edge of a cliff in a gale, frightening but also marvellous.

It makes you very uncomfortable to realise that your emotional attachment to something is an indulgence.

I am ashamed to put down here what happened next, but I shall, as a sort of penance for being so utterly shallow.
