how to keep yourself entertained while in deep space alone for six months
at the last pit stop, get everything. fuel for your ship, fuel for you, everything.
the takeoff firefight is inevitable, just have fun and be yourself.
here begins the isolation! hope you have a tangle, because you’ll be bored as all hell otherwise. your tangle is about to be your best friend.
listen to every earth song you can stand. then listen to them again. and again. repeat until you can recite the lyrics to queen’s greatest hits randomly.
change your hair
look out your windows. space is beautiful, shame how we tend to forget it.
listen to old messages from you friends until you feel sick. turn on earth portal and listen to her voice forced to say things she’d hate if she heard herself until you break the receiver. oops
send her messages she’ll probably never hear. wonder what her parents are feeling. they’re probably over it by now, people are better at processing with other people.
listen to new earth music. how many earth months has it been? you can’t remember the conversion rates.
change your hair again. that mirror was the second best thing you ever bought. depending on your mood, the best was either the ship you’re in or a crate full of core stabilizers.
wonder if he’s still alive. ask your tangle what the earth date is. what did he say his birthday was? he did mention it, right?
change your hair again
every flat surface in the ship is now covered in paint. the stuff on the ceiling looks horrible.
ask your tangle to find pictures of vapis-10’s oceans. change your hair while he takes too long to find them.
there is paint all over your hair now. this was not supposed to happen.
at least the ceiling looks better.
will the crick in your neck ever heal?
change your hair again
sleep. a lot.
talk to your tangle about nothing. ask him to find boring books to read aloud. did you know trusk has nine different language families, but six of them use a variation of the same alphabet?
think about dying. no one knows you’re out here except for the client. if you died they wouldn’t know until you arrived. how long would it take for your ship to run out of fuel? how many corpses would you be joining? how many ships empty but not empty float through space beside you?
you are officially closer to those ships than to any habitable planet. you unseeingly pass so many dead.
arrive, in the end. hesitate, reaching for the handle. you have complete control of everything in here. are you so willing to give it up?
leave the ship with your hand on your gun.
