Woolly Mammoth
The woolly mammoth, Mammuthus primigenius, is an extinct herbivore related to elephants who trudged across the steppe-tundras of Eurasia and North America from around 300,000 years ago until their numbers seriously dropped from around 11,000 years ago. A few last stragglers survived into the Holocene on island refuges off the coast of Siberia and Alaska. One of these - Wrangel Island - harboured the last known group of mammoths until around 3,700 years ago.

Happy International Women's Day! . Some of the most well known women from the past are the famous "Venus Figurines" that are found all over the world from as far back as the Paleolithic. The exact significance of these figurines is still a matter of discussion, as is the appropriateness of the name itself, and whether all of these beautifully diverse figurines should be lumped into one typological category. . If you're interested in learning more about those figurines depicted in this post, check out the past #TeaDay reels (also shared in stories!). Left to right: Venus of Brassempouy, Venus of Dolní Věstonice, Orkney Venus, Venus of Willendorf. . What's your favourite (pre)historic depiction of women? . #InternationalWomensDay #VenusFigurine #Venus #VenusOfWillendorf #VenusOfDolniVestonice #WestrayWife #OrkneyVenus #WomenOfPrehistory #WomenOfThePast #FemalePower #archaeologist #ArchaeologyLovers #ArchaeologyLife #prehistoric #prehistory #ArchaeologistsOfInstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/Cph3W4aqq_k/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Venus Figurines Showcases Superiority With 'Holiday' In 2015 two college friends Jaidyn Daniels and Brad Holzberger discovered their love for music and decided to come together and start a band in Southern Tasmania, they later welcomed Cameron Quinn and Angus Wilks to the band and since then Venus Figurines has gained traction in Southern Tasmania, and continues to expand their wings. Listening to songs of Venus Figurines one could hear the sound of different musicians like Foo Fighters, The Smashing Pumpkins, Deep Purple, The Dirty Nil, and Violent Soho this isn’t surprising because the band is heavily influenced by them/ Their latest single ‘Holiday’ opens with come explosive guitar riffs then accentuated with rhythmic drums that pave way for the magic incoming. Holiday is off the band's forthcoming album, Modern Paradigm which is expected to be out in the middle of 2023. "Holiday" is taken from a person's perspective where they are undervalued and taken advantage of in a workplace where their superiors line their pockets whilst living the high life at the expense of their underlings who are less fortunate. - Venus Figurines Listening to Holiday feels Nostalgic, the instruments which were used makes the lyrics of the song stand out while giving music lovers something to jam to. The song gives fans a sneak peek of what to expect from the band's sophomore album. The band's outstanding amity and musicianship are on full display in the hard-hitting garage rock song "Holiday," which has killer guitar riffs, fuzzy melodic bass lines, and groovy percussion. Jaidyn Daniels - vocals, guitar | Brad Holzberger - drums, percussion | Cameron Quinn - guitar, backing vocals | Angus Wilks - bass guitar Listen to Holiday below: Follow Venus Figurines on Facebook Twitter Spotify Bandcamp Youtube Instagram Songkick

Venus of Willendorf, estimated to have been made 30,000 BCE. When nature and women were sacred, our big breasts and hips were worshiped, in the modern times this was made us forget because loving ourselves didn't make them money. I imagine you at least seeing this now and blowing your hair away with smile on your face and remember that YOU ARE A FULL TIME GODDESS. If you like to get this print for yourself or any goddess around you, available as a digital download at my #etsyshop. Naama Steinbock and Idan Friedman, of Reddish Studio, have created a playful sculpture display called “Venus of Jaffa”. The goddesses are made from earthenware-colored balloons, inflated within a copper wire frame, creating a natural curve within the form. Balloons, with their limited life span, give the plump bodies of the original figurines a modern and transitory quality. “While the archeological Venus statuettes have survived tens of thousands of years,” Steinbock and Friedman note, “the new addition to their dynasty is only ephemeral and has the lifespan of a party decoration.”
I just love the everlasting adoration of the Venus figurine!

Ice Age
An ice age is a period in which the earth's climate is colder than normal, with ice sheets capping the poles and glaciers dominating higher altitudes. Within an ice age, there are varying pulses of colder and warmer climatic conditions, known as 'glacials' and 'interglacials'. Even within the interglacials, ice continues to cover at least one of the poles. In contrast, outside an ice age temperatures are higher and more stable, and there is far less ice all around. The earth has thus far made it through at least five significant ice ages.

And we're live! . By this I don't mean the Venus of Dolní Věstonice and the candle, although it might seem as if they are alive when you listen in to the brand new podcast episodes which have now been released to the world! So head to your podcasting platform of choice and like / follow / rate / subscribe to "Tea-break Time Travel" to hear the first two episodes of this brand new @archpodnet produced series (hosted by me!). . Episode one ("the soul of the object") looks at the Venus - or should I say the Woman - of Dolní Věstonice and takes a dive into the craftsmanship behind this beautiful figurine as well as the phenomenon of paleolithic clay working. And all thanks to my amazing guest, Sarah Lord from @pottedhistory . Episode two ("a flame from my hearth to yours") investigates the history of candles and the ethics and development of candlemaking. Providing an expert insight into this topic is none other than the fantastic Ashleigh Airey from @ashwoodcandles . I had so much fun recording these episodes, and I'm so excited to hear what you think! . #podcast #newpodcast #archaeology #archaeologistsofinstagram #archaeologist #archaeologylife #archaeologylovers #palaeolithic #candles #prehistoric #prehistory #venusfigurine #dolnivestonice #teaday #scicomm #sciencecommunication https://www.instagram.com/p/CfV44MIrKu4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Paleolithic Art
The first non-functional human-made objects that could be clearly classified as art date back to the Upper Paleolithic (c. 50,000 to c. 12,000 years ago) in Europe. Although Upper Paleolithic art is mostly associated with rock art, besides the famous cave paintings of France and Spain, the art of the Late Stone Age also includes carefully carved animal figurines, Venus figurines, perforated beads and shells, decorated tools, flutes, and other portable objects. This gallery features 15 images of the world's oldest artworks.
