VENUS, ADONIS AND CUPID(1595) by ANNIBALE CARRACCI
VENUS, ADONIS, AND CUPID focuses on a tale best known for its association with OVID, the ROMAN poet. CARRACCI shows the scene just before VENUS is hit by CUPID’s arrow, in which she falls in love with ADONIS (whose hounds are shown accompanying him as he embarks on an imprudent hunt with an angry boar).
In the background, we see a couple of pigeons, which symbolize love. The two figures are supported by a complex backdrop of ancient ruins and a chaotic sky, which adds drama to the story.
VENUS, ADONIS, and CUPID shows CARRACCI’s broad range of influences, incorporating elements from VERONESE, TITIAN, and GRECO-ROMAN sculptures. This fable was painted by Veronese as well as TITIAN, and there are similarities in the composition, where VENUS interacts with ADONIS before a naturalistic backdrop.
As a naturalist painter, CARRACCI’s special talent shines through here, as his sculptural molding of the figure’s bodies, and the light that illuminates the smoothness of their skin, creates a subtle realism that might have put him at odds with the MANNERISTS’ preference for realism. CARRACCI’s talent for playing with light is also evident in his use of cloth materials, particularly in the beautiful iridescent shimmer of ADONIS’ robe.
