you never really celebrated birthdays. for one because you never had anyone to celebrate with, and two because nobody ever really cared about the morbid daughter of hades. however percy jackson loved birthdays and made it his life mission to make sure you had the best birthday

for a month before your birth date he began preparations for your special day. he knew you wouldn’t want anything crazy, just something simple so that’s what he stuck with. your day would go as this: percy would let you sleep in as long as you’d like, of course with him by your side. that is until he would make your favorite breakfast (it took lots of bribery wine to be able to use the kitchen), then bringing it to you in your bed when you awoke

after breakfast you would read for a bit, percy happy to do so as long as you were happy doing it. later he would take you to the lake for a swim before dinner (which was cake, he wouldn’t let you eat anything else saying, ���it’s crucial to eat cake on your birthday’)

after dinner he would bring you to a secluded spot in the forest, one he had ventured upon while on a walk one morning. a beautiful waterfall cascading down the rocks. this part was the most special part of the evening- or just the whole day in general. the present he would gift you had been waiting in cabin three for many months before, however percy wanted to wait to give it to you until the moment was right, which he thought would be your birthday (aka today, duh!)

every nerve in his body was triggered on the way there. what if you hated the present? would you break up with him? would you hate him? all his negative thoughts disappear when you give him the smile he holds so dear in his heart, one reserved just for him

percy gently takes your hand, forcing you to avert your gaze from the water to him. “I want to give you my present”

your smile grows wider if that’s even possible. you watch as percy takes a velvet pouch from his pocket, placing it in your free hand

“I kinda need my hand for this” you say, eyeing the hand percy has in his

“oh! yes, sorry” he untwines his hand from yours, allowing you to open the pouch, your starry eyes twinkling when you see what’s inside. “I’ve had it for months, I’ve just been waiting for the right moment to give it to you”

“percy!” you beam, throwing your arms around his neck, he happily returns the hug. your next words are whispered, “you got me a promise ring”

percy is sure every nerve ever flowing through him disappears. “yes. a promise that one day I’ll make it a wedding ring, I swear it”

you pull back to face him, his look of adoration nearly making you fold. “let me put it on you” he unwraps one arm from your waist, taking your hand holding the ring, sliding it on the finger people put wedding rings on

“I love it” you whisper, admiring the ring on your hand. you give one last glance to percy before leaning in for a kiss (percy made you wait all day for this claiming he wanted to ‘save your birthday kiss for tonight’). his arms wrap back around your waist, pulling you closer. a days worth of yearning and love pooling out into every kiss

you pull away only for a moment. “let’s go back to your cabin?”

“whatever you want. It’s your birthday after all”

« Are you sure this is were we should go my love?

Yes!” Your smile is contagious and your Felix can only smile as you grab his hand, little warm one in his big cold one, leading him away from one of the biggest Parisian mall and into little streets.

The weather was bad for humans, but perfect for a vampire in disguise, so when Felix asked you if you wanted to go shopping with him you quickly accepted. Not only because you loved spending time with your mate, but also because you both shared a passion for the gothic lifestyle and nothing was better than going shopping with another goth.

After the Indien Boutique and a few thrifts shops where you found some nice shirts and velvet pieces, you wanted to visit one last shop with your Felix. One that carried your beloved Victorian and romantic style.

One more turn, and the shop came into view. It was so discreet that one could easily miss the sign showing the presence of the Pentagramme Shop. You entered with Felix in your little goth paradise. The clothes were expensive, but really high quality and you knew that Felix wouldn’t let you pay anyway, the vampire wanting so much to spoil the little love he had waited so long for.

And spoiling you, Felix had intended to. When he first stepped with you in the shop, he loved the elegance and luxurious aspect of the clothing. Flowy shirts, satin corsets, brocard skirts and velvet cloaks and jackets: this shop had everything he could have ever asked to spoil his darling mate! And that’s what he did.

Spending hours browsing the racks, your love making you try outfit after outfit, each one more goth and luxurious than the precedent one, your lover basking in the looks of pure joy every time you looked at yourself in the mirror.

He ended up buying you more than you whished him to, but how could he not spoil you, his chérie?

Hand in hand again, you left the shop together, going back to that small apartment you called your home. Once there, your beloved helped you wash every piece of clothing, goth rock playing in the background. Happiness was floating in the air, and as you were done with your cleaning the song Dance d’Amour by the 69 Eyes started.

Felix could not resist, and leading you to the leaving room he took you in his embrace and lead you into a dance. Soon many laughter and endearments could be heard through the flat, full of promises of a love that would last forever.

J'avais depuis longtemps connaissance de ce livre et en avait lu quelques extraits mais je dois dire que j'ai été surprise par la majorité des tournants pris dans ce dernier.

Dans mon imaginaire: une entrée dans le monde des débuts du music-hall et du cabaret, dans un âge d'or de Londre teinté par la misère et la luxure. Une histoire d'amour virevoltante et toxique à la fois.

Cela, Tipping The Velvet nous le donne, mais à un tiers environ, alors que je me demande pourquoi le climax arrive déjà et ce qui peut bien arriver dans le reste du livre, Kitty et Nan se séparent, le music-hall s'en va, et tout devient sombre, pluvieux, poisseux. Une toute autre ambiance s'installe, celle de la prostitution, de bas-fonds et de la pauvreté. Ensuite, celle du beau monde, de la cage dorée et des riches lesbiennes qui dînent dans de grands salons et échangent des gossips. Enfin, le milieu lower-middle-class, la famille, le repos et la stabilité.

A ce titre, loin d'être la romance calme et distrayante que j'avais anticipé, Sarah Waters propose un véritable Bildungsroman, où notre héros-ine traverse les couches sociales une par unes, y trouvant d'autres sapphistes exprimant chacune à leur manière leurs désirs opprimés.

Le premier, peut-être, roman d'initation lesbien purement fictif, non apparenté à des mémoires comme Oranges are not the only fruit. Par moments, Tipping the Velvet ressemble plus à un Orlando notamment par l'identité forte et pourtant mouvante de son personnage principal.

Avec ces changements fréquents d'ambiance, il est difficile de s'ennuyer ou de passer un mauvais moment de lecture. Chaque "acte" propose une prose nouvelle et l'évolution de son personnage est réussie et fascinante à suivre.

Je ne sais pas où placer cette pensée mais j'aime lire des livres où la seuxalité et le désir des femmes ne sont pas enfermés, laissés sur le côté ou elliptiques. Nan désire, Nan fucks, Nan wants. Et elle vous emmerde.
