Vel opened her hands to find what looked like a necklace, a thin black cord threaded through a circular piece of leather with a simple but sturdy metal center. It seemed to be etched with a phrase in the native language of Aldhani, but the letters had long since faded out of comprehension. “Dhani jewelry?” she asked, gently turning the item over in her hands. Cinta nodded. “I asked Gorn about it while we were over there. He said it’s a charm,” Cinta informed her. “You wear it or take it with you and it should bring good fortune, keep you safe.” The side of Vel’s mouth curled up in a grin as her gaze met Cinta’s eyes. “I already have a good luck charm.”

I had the opportunity to commission a piece of art from the wonderful @onceuponavoid and I could not be happier! I've adored every Velcinta work put out already and this one is no exception.

I’ve wanted to have an illustration of this scene from my fic (oh, love, get me) out of the cold for about a year now (really since I started noticing this thing around Vel's walking stick) and here it is! I hope y'all love it as much as I do!

Summary

One hundred years ago, the people of Aermainh waged war against their own gods and sent them back to the realm from which they came in an event known as the Godsend. Since then, magic has been a finite resource - the blood of the gods' only casualty, metered out slowly, and this precious ichor is running out.

The spoiled youngest son of a governor, Velius Mattia could not care less about the ichor running through his own veins when he drops out of Laryce Academy for Mages. Frustrated with his lack of innate talent and the grueling coursework, he runs away to the capital city of Elaboros to celebrate the first centennial of the Godsend and avoid the wrath of his demanding family.

Ortag Garrok has never left the arid northern desert of Aermainh or, indeed, his own village before he's banished. Accused of a crime he didn't commit and far out of his depth, he travels deep into human territory looking for somewhere new to belong.

On the beach of the Elaborate Sound, these unlikely companions are enlisted to aid a forgotten minor god, Raptora, who has been trapped on Aermainh for a hundred years with no way home. They resolve to help the Lord of Oaths open the gate to the Aviarium in exchange for all that they dream - but Vel and Garrok will soon discover that there's good reason Raptora's otherworldly kin were banished.

I'm not really a writeblr bc I barely write and also barely -blr, but I follow a couple and I'm super inspired by their passion and posting so I'm. Trying it out. Idk I'm nervous but whatever.

I've been working and thinking about Aermainh forever - I first thought of the name and gods in 2018, and this iteration has been in progress (though on a backburner) since late 2022. I wanted to create my own fantasy world for a couple reasons:

Firstly, I've been writing Elder Scrolls fic with OC focus since 2016 and wanted my own world to play with since I was basically writing original fiction without having to do any worldbuilding, but using someone else's world has its own drawbacks

And second, I want to create the kind of book I want to read, in the most self-indulgent sense possible. M/M romance, maybe explicit smut (still deciding lol), but all alongside the sweeping, immersive world and wonder of my favorite paperback fantasy novels. I'm especially inspired by Scott Lynch's Gentlemen Bastard Sequence and the Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling.

Also, I just think big lizard people are neat. Maybe that's my TES-brain disease. I love Argonians so much.

Love my totally-not-a-witch totally-not-catholic-either character Vel, loved drawing him in the Sonoran Desert where he calls home, really am pleased with how this turned out.

hi hello i decided that my courier will now own a horse! i think her name will be Perch because its a fish and in polish its okoń and it means "o! horse!!" and i think its just really fucking funny

the horse is a sleipnir, they are created by @owligator, truly beautiful creatures

roughly written backstory under the cut

Vels found the horse as a young foal when he was still a raider, who escaped ncr farms so she was already cropped. He fed it etc disney princess stuff and ended up doing a lot of raiding on this horse, they closed a quick, close bond, so the horse followed him to the followers when vels decided he no longer could be a raider. She was kind of a menace but was actually well liked by the followers, usually just hanging around, being a pest, and ocasionally when needed worked to aid the followers. When Vels took the job as a courier he was quite good at it due to the better transport, and that's why he was hired by mr House. Unfortunately when he was doing that delivery he was caught because Perch was shot, he fell of her and lost conciousness. Perch was shot fatally but managed to escape some distance untill she collaped into nearby toxic waste, which acutally turned her into a glowing ghoul horse. That turned her partially feral then but because of the connection, and she still through the fog recognized Vels as herd (family?), so she went to find him and almost bit off his fingers. Because still she feral, she no longer is his full time steed, more like a stray dog that always hangs around, and she still lets herself be ridden but its more likely she will keep a distance from settlements and larger groups (and eat any meat she stumbles upon, attack and be hostile towards most living things)

Due to choking on radioactive goo before death she now leaks it, out of mouth, nose and through her ribs, it seems almost neverending, they are also accumulated in her tissue, the eyes, mouth is all glowing, in some places even glowing though her skin. She is highly radioactive, but as long as you carry tons of rad-X and radaway you SHOULD be safe enaugh
