There's a huge range of diverse thoughts and opinions within veganism, the same way there's a huge range of diversity of thoughts and opinions within Christianity or Buddhism or Islam or leftism. It's a philosophy and way of life. Anyone is within their rights to criticize veganism but how valuable is that criticism when it refuses to acknowledge that veganism isn't a monolith? At what point does it stop being legitimate criticism and start being straw manning?

As a person who is different from others in many ways, I have been treated horribly from time to time. I've been seen as something less than human, and I'd argue that that experience has influenced my world view and led to my veganism.

For me, it seems impossible to be treated not just differently, but even maliciously, for being something they are not, and still continue to do that to others. Just like I didn't choose all the aspects of me that some people so hate me for, non-human animals didn't choose to be non-human or be born to farms. They never wanted to be taken to the slaughterhouses - they had no choice.

We cannot give other animals an inherent, lesser value. We aren't in the position to determine their purpose. Non-human animals are not below us and will never be here for our momentary enjoyment whether it is from food or amusement.

In many ways we are the same.

tofu: do you have a favorite use for tofu?

i love fried tofu in pretty much any situation, and i also love tofu in soups like hot and sour soup, miso soup, or tom kha. honestly i love pretty much any tofu as long as it’s cooked halfway decent. 

friends: top five favorite animals?

how could i choose?? dragons are my all time favorite animal but i also love all corvids, all rodents and nocturnal animals like possums, rats, and raccoons, as well as bugs and insects, and i love “farm animals” like cows, horses, goats, and pigs. honestly it’d be harder to find an animal i didn’t like.

transition? have any advice for new vegans?

in my experience, the longer you’re vegan the easier it gets. seek out vegan culture and community via books, meetups, activism, and social media - the more you’re surrounded by people who get you the easier it is. if someone doesn’t approve of your veganism, feed them delicious vegan food until they do. lastly and most importantly, do not fall prey to people who are trying to peddle veganism as a part of diet culture. this is an extremely easy pattern of thinking to fall into, and often results in an eating disorder and discomfort with your body and your relationship with food. this is something a lot of “influencer vegans” peddle on youtube and instagram and it’s extremely easy to be sucked into. i wish i had known this when i went vegan. when people say veganism is not a diet, they mean veganism is not about losing weight or looking a certain way, it’s about animal liberation. radical political movements are inherently anti diet culture.

I wish other vegans would stop trying to appeal to the idea of Devine Motherhood. (Ex. Arguments like: "No mother should be separated from her babies" or "All mothers are meant to nurture their children" or "It's wrong to deprive someone of motherhood")

Mothers are capable of being shitty to their children. There's no special nurturing instinct that possesses someone's soul that moment they give birth. Mothers (regardless of species) can reject their babies, they can feel nothing but numbness twords them. Mothers can treat their children poorly.

Likewise, fathers (regardless of species) can be kind and nurturing. They can hold all or many of the qualities that we associate with motherhood.

There's no version of this argument that doesn't feed into gender and sex essentialism.

The special vegetables were a gift from other Midaat volunteers (I volunteer in that organisation a bit) who wanted to make me happy while I am stuck at home with covid. Other stuff are from the supermarket.
