I think it’s interesting how Gary really likes Rage Against the Machine. It kind of makes me think that he wants secretly wants something more for himself.
But he’s still feeding the machine (Selina).

Would you be willing/interested in doing an analysis of Dan and Amy from Veep? Specifically how their relationship changed with the new showrunner, the seemingly over the top horrible treatment Dan displayed towards her in season 7, and what Reid said about him not actually feeling romantic love towards Amy? And I searched your tags and saw you thought the writers were just too coward to make them actually happen, could you expand?
OK. So. We have Reid's quote
“I think Dan has a lot of love for Amy, but I think from his part, none of it is romantic. One, it’s just getting his rocks off, And two, I think he really appreciates her. I think he sees that we’re birds of a feather,” he said. “I think Dan is certainly more immoral than she is, but I think he’s like ‘if I can just get her to come down to my level, we operate really well together. Because she’s sharky, she’s cagey, she’s smart, and she’s vicious. I think Dan sees himself a little bit in her. I think that’s where that connection comes. But I don’t think Dan has romantic love for… almost anyone.”
and my main issue with this quote is that he says "But I don't think Dan has romantic love for ... almost anyone" because the 'almost anyone', the exception to this, would be Amy because of everything he said before that.
Because yes, Dan does not put any value on romantic relationships. It is established in the pilot that Dan's primary priority is his career and that he will use romantic relationships to advance it
and he discards these relationships as soon as he feels like they're no longer of value to him
which is something Dan does consistently. He doesn't value interpersonal relationships at all, including potential friendships. He cuts off Jonah when he realizes that he can't use him for information.
But he never does that with Amy. He never sees Amy as valueless to him
Certainly, they'll compete, and it might not stay clean, but he wants her career to advance with his, he wants them to advance together,
when he thinks that she's pregnant, he is genuinely concerned about what that would do for her career
when she leaves to be with Selina, he's flabbergasted because he thinks it's career suicide
He wants to win but he also wants to see her win
That is the highest form of intimacy for a character like Dan, and in the earlier/Iannucci seasons (and sorta season 5), that is present.
Yes, Dan is self-obsessed, yes, he is self-centred, yes, he is narcissistic, yes he is opportunistic and insensitive, but he looks out for Amy
to the point that even though he's bad with "basic empathy", he does do his best to be of comfort to her regarding her dad
and even saves her from her family at the hospital while also allowing himself to be dragged to a family Thanksgiving a few seasons later.
I also find his jealousy of Ed in season 2
interesting because of how he says, "You swore you were only going to date outside of D.C."
because I don't think it would be a stretch to say that Dan would want to be a power couple with Amy and it may not be romantic in the traditional sense of the word but in the context of Veep and in the context of Dan and in the context of Amy, and Dan and Amy, hitching himself to the one person who consistently helps him with jobs and access and who he in turn consistently helps with jobs and access and who have an odd sense of loyalty to each other
there is a type of romance to that.
So the earlier seasons do all of this while also being aware of Amy and Dan actually having chemistry and acknowledging that there is tension there and showcasing that tension in their interactions. In the later seasons --- which I think butcher all of the characters --- it's almost as though Dan and Amy don't have a personal relationship at all. Dan becomes such a caricature of himself that he's almost not a human character anymore and therefore how he treats Amy is absent all of the subtleties and -- Selina's favourite word -- nuances that made their dynamic work and that also made it fun because Dan is written exactly as how the characters facetiously describe him without any other layers, which then impacts the Amy and Dan relationship.
I don't remember when I said the writes were cowards but I think I meant it more like, PUT THEM TOGETHER, YOU COWARDS.

Law & Order "Freedom Of Expression" -- Welcome Aboard Reid Scott, The Premiere Episode Itself? An Epic Miss
Spoiler alert, if you haven't seen the 23rd (reboot 3rd) season premiere of Law & Order, do not read anything other than the title if you don't want to be spoiled; otherwise on with the review.
"Freedom of Expression" (writers: Pamela Wechsler (teleplay), Rick Eid, & creator Dick Wolf / directed by: Alexander Hall) leaves a lot to be desired in this 23rd season opener of the Mothership series. The Law & Order franchise's staple since it's inception is taking the stories from current events (AKA episodes being "ripped from the headlines"), however this premiere takes that way too far, even by mother ship standards. I'm going to get into that in a later moment but first, there is some good, or at least it is in my opinion. Click below to read my full review and analysis.
That good is Senior Detective Vincent Reilly, who is portrayed by Reid Scott of Veep fame. It appears that Reilly may have a dark side and just as dark history with NYPD, coming off as literally very trigger happy as early as the opening teaser in the episode. He literally threatened to shoot a suspect who was wielding a knife - which Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) managed to disarm from the suspect, Reilly not being a fan of the way Shaw handled it - and Reilly subsequently shoots and kills another suspect near the episode's end. This is something I'm sure the series will explore later on in the upcoming fourth episode of the season, but this puts an asterisk next to this detective's name.
Meanwhile the series' previous asterisk, Detective Frank Cosgrove (Jeffrey Donovan, who departed during the start of the season's production in November due to creative differences) got a brief mention in the worst way to describe a characters exit. "He got jammed up for being too honest," and it "being a bad time to have an opinion," which is the exchange Shaw and Reilly had about Cosgrove in the squad room. Really? Seriously? THIS is how you have the characters discuss another one's exit? And opinion about what? Knowing Frank Cosgrove, it probably an opinion that was personal to him that should have no reflection on how he should have performed his duty as a police officer. Meanwhile, breaking the 4th wall here, if you will, this could be a hint to how Jeffrey Donovan's random exit came to be... he may have wanted a say on where he wanted something to go and was told that he could go. Honestly, if there wasn't going to be a serious effort in trying to give this character a decent/proper exit, I would have rather they cut it out of the episode like they did with Anthony Anderson's exit back in season 22.
As for Reid Scott? He's meshing good on screen with Mehcad Brooks. They have a pretty chill chemistry going here. The best thing? Scott isn't having to force a Bronx accent like Jeffrey Donovan did for Cosgrove. It feels great to see his lines come out with his natural tone. The entire L&O reboot cast is top notch, the problems continue to lie with the storylines themselves... something that clearly people at Wolf Entertainment and NBC don't seem to care about with this reboot.
Now that is the bad of this entire premiere episode. It's a dud of a story in it's entirety. It's filled with political talking points, mixed with current events that are occurring both domestically and foreign. I felt more like I was watching an op-ed on Nightly News as opposed to a basic Law & Order episode. The cherry of the episode is the still ongoing Israel/Hamas/Palestine conflict that is the base of the entire episode. You can still be against what's going on in the Middle East while championing for Israel, Palestine, and/or Judaism. Innocent life is innocent life, period. But that is not what this discussion is about, this is about the Law & Order episode that reinforces divisiveness. Dixon (Camryn Manheim) yelling about "Israel's war crimes," Price (Hugh Dancy) insisting Maroun (Odelya Halevi) was/should be affected by what's going on overseas and her not wanting to weigh in on it but instead on the defendant being the face of the Left. And to top is all off, "Hang 'Em High" Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston) ], who is barely showcased, is still pushing to make deals on high profile cases? It just all felt off and I can't put it into words.
In summary, I basically give the mothership a barely solid D. It's the 23rd season's premiere, 3rd of the reboot. Rarely do shows get opportunities such as this! This opener should have been an opportunity to showcase our current characters, potentially bringing in an old one and of course our newest arrival in Reilly (Scott). It needed to be about more than just a "compelling case" (that is not very compelling at all). Ripping the headlines is one thing but this episode didn't do any kind of deviation, it was direct. Other than Reilly's two moments with suspects, where was the suspense? The energy? The continuity from the past? The guest stars? The magic?
This reboot is stuck in a boring weekly repetitive creative cycle that revolves around telling the stories with political undertones and stereotypes that the original series was never in, even when it was in the rocky 16-18th seasons when the writing staff was mostly Los Angeles based. I would say I hope the writers/executive producers make a change, but that's basically a waste, as they have yet to do it since this reboot started. And the fact that creator Dick Wolf co-wrote this piece of merda and let it go to air? Just says how he feels about the reboot too.
This episode is not Law & Order... I don't know what show it is. CNN Tonight? Hannity? Newsmax Live? Do better Law & Order. Do better. Be better.

Rapid Response Trump Camp Puts to Bed X Post by Harris 'Interns' Citing AP's 'Fake News' Vance Quote
Thursday has become one of the worst days in Vice President Kamala Harris' mismanaged and flailing presidential run. Let's take a stroll through a few of the previous troubling incidents and statements so far, and see where it leads.
Team Harris began the day with catastrophic tidings via the poll analysis of Nate Silver...and whispers continuing to swirl like the Sonoran Desert's monsoon winds that the campaign is having regrets about who Kamala picked as her running mate.
Whoops: Report That Harris Team Regrets Not Picking Shapiro, As Nate Silver Has More Bad News for Them
Democrat veep nominee and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz didn't have things any better, with the revelation of his comments of effusive support for pro-Hamas protesters reminding everyone why he was little more than a security blanket for Harris during her recent shambles of an interview with CNN.
But perhaps more damaging was that Walz also received a subpoena from the U.S. House of Representatives, after reports surfaced that he and his gubernatorial office, along with a shady nonprofit in Minnesota--and the chief of the Biden Department of Education--may have acted in a conspiracy to bilk taxpayers of $250 million meant for COVID-19 relief in schools.
Read More:
YIKES: Tim Walz's Remarks About Gaza Just Revealed Why They Don't Want Him Answering Questions
NEW: House GOP Subpoenas MN Gov. Walz on Allegations His Office Knew About $250M COVID-19 Fraud Scheme
Things only went downhill from there for Harris-Walz in the evening, though. During a campaign stop on Thursday, Ohio Senator JD Vance, the 2024 Republican vice presidential nominee, spoke about the horrific school shooting in Georgia on Wednesday, in which two teachers and two children were murdered by another student.
As my colleague, Bob Hoge wrote, not only did the Associated Press mangle the factual wording of what Vance said, but the Harris-Vance campaign mimeographed it to commit what could charitably be described as a character assassination on former President Donald Trump's running mate:
READ:
MORE LIES: Kamala Harris, Associated Press Completely Distort JD Vance's Message About School Shootings
Hoge called it a disgusting display, and he nailed it in one word. Here, though, is the icing on the campaign collapse cake for Kamala. In contrast to the single-A, sophomoric work product of the Harris social media hooligan squad, Team Trump must have had its top-tier rapid response team on the clock tonight--because they didn't mess around and demolished that dumb post to smithereens:
Here's Team Trump's spot-on response, which put the other folks' post right to bed:
In case you can't see the post, it reads:
Kamala's interns just released a statement pushing FAKE NEWS that the Associated Press just retracted. Watch the full video and you'll clearly see that JD Vance does not say what they claim he said. These morons do nothing but lie every single day.
There isn't one incorrect word in that post. Lying is all that the Democrats do, and to do it when something can be so easily debunked in an instant says so much. These are hateful and dishonest people, who must have a lower skill level at basic marketing than your average associate at a cellphone case kiosk at the mall.
How in the world did anyone decide that these people should be in charge of making the vice president of one of the worst presidents in U.S. history appear to be a palatable choice for the American people come November? Whoever hired them should hand them their pink slips first thing on Friday morning, and then tender their own resignation immediately.
Anyway, it's too late for Team Harris to, in a manner of speaking, "be unburdened by what has been":

Oh, hard agree. I think you're right that this was a notable change that is Worthy of Analysis. Like, you're SO correct about his bypassing of systemic conversation. I think this is one way in which canon Light is very much Seventeen Years Old and then thrown into stasis by an unchanging, all-encompassing goal without ever reflecting. I don't have a whole understanding of the Japanese context of the character -- I love when people on here are contextualizing, it's so significant and I eat it all up -- but I sense the musical is fundamentally more American in its themes, and less concerned with Light's character growth (or lack thereof) because there is no time-skip to exemplify that. Ooh I'm having so much fun thinking about this but I could be Just Saying Things.
Also put "those who stand enjoyer" on my gravestone srsly. I am also sometimes confused about Those!Light's politics and now I'm inspired to, like, collect data on all the things he does and line them up to decipher, because sometimes I thought he was making vaguely left-leaning choices (source needed) and then, of course, he makes really horrific choices (source not as needed). But at one point he definitely does say he chose blue because he looks better in it. I assume that's commentary on political systems and the people in power all kinda believing the same things, deep down. Very Veep-esque.
I've seen people being annoyed about "Where is the Justice" and the fact that it potentially makes Light a more sympathetic character in the musical than anywhere else. Certainly no one is on Soichiro's side when he's all "laws are made for everyone / we're treated all the same" when as a society I think we all understand how untrue that is. So, yeah, I see why the sound blew up on TikTok with the corporations making their regulations and stuff. Sure.
But I actually think it's kind of a good setup. Like you're kinda on this kid's side. The justice system IS fucked. Whole ensemble sing-along fucked, yes yes yes go go go. So when the turn comes and the kid's like "I know the solution! EVERYONE SHOULD DIE" it's kinda like ... oh shit. Yeah maybe we should have been practicing some media literacy this whole time? Like maybe someone can be right about the system being a mess and we don't have to follow them because they are the loudest one identifying that? Maybe that's an important lesson? It also thematically sets up the whole thing which is that there is no All Good or All Bad. (I know this isn't what Ohba says and he sees Soichiro as Very Good but I do think that in adaptations of the story set or staged now, we have to acknowledge the problems with that... but that is not what this post is about.)
Anyway this is all to say that I see no problem with any of it and, idk, I'll defend the musical with my every breath probably.
#I am procrastinating so hard right now!#I just wanna compare various retellings of this narrative all day long instead of Doing The Work Today#Death Note#death note the musical#those who stand for nothing fall for anything#Envy is the best Those! poster also so I am extra honoured

Hello friend 🌻 I used to hang around here a whole lot in 2019. I am currently rewatching Veep (for the 6th time) and I want to shout about Dan and Amy. Also, I’m rereading BMTL - it’s even better than I remember! Hope you’re doing well ✨✨
Hey, it's so nice to hear from you! I'm so glad you came by and left a message!! I miss 2019 when everyone was on here processing their feelings about Veep S7 and I would get all kinds of fun analysis asks in my inbox. I always want to shout about Dan and Amy. Sometimes I think about the way Dan reaches over to spin his glass when Amy is telling him that she got Sophie her own room and I feel, as the youths say, feral. One day I'm going to write up that night as it should have gone.
And I'm so glad you are rereading BMTL! I know it's been a long time since I've updated, but I'm still here and always thinking about my version of Dan and Amy and mischievous Cassie. I'm always thinking of little bits and drabbles in that universe...recently I've been thinking a lot about BMTL Dan and Amy in the early days right after Selina lost her election, what an intimate and important and probably confusing time that was for them.
Thanks so much for stopping by my inbox...I hope you are doing well too! 🌻

Time for a little rant. This is what pisses me off about Veep.
I was a casual fan for the first 6 years of the show. I rooted for Dan and Amy, but they weren’t something I specifically watched for. Especially after season 5, I kind of gave up on them ever happening - I even forgot about the hotel room/Nevada moment completely. And during season 6...forget it. I accepted it as literally never happening.
Then the s6 finale happened, grabbed me and pulled me into the deep end. The ship that I had thought was dead was alive and happening and real. And I was okay with waiting a couple years because, it was happening. Did I think it would be happily ever after with kids and babies? No. I thought there would be a serious struggle and a lot of battling between them but it would lead them to each other in some way.
But now...ugh. This is so far from how I saw it going. Dan especially...the nuance and layers (minimal that he had) are nearly gone. I feel like the scraps we’re getting are primarily due to Reid. And his chemistry with Anna. It’s just very strange, and almost feels like Mandel is trying to (and I don’t mean this as a way to minimize this issue) gaslight shippers a bit...saying what we’ve seen all these years isn’t real.
Anyway, I’m not sure how to speculate from here on out. My expectations are super low - as many have already spec’d, and based on some quotes from Reid today - I think Dan is going to end up in his 50s married to a 20 year old and still up to his old tricks...and still trying to string Amy along a bit. If they have a tender moment or two before the big time jump, I wouldn’t be surprised, but I don’t see them ending up together. I think my big question is whether her inevitable (it seems) second pregnancy is his or not. And if she ends up happy with someone else. I sure as hell hope she does.

hello, everyone! I wanted to make a more formal introduction post!
about me: my name is juno, i use they/she pronouns and i am twenty-one years old. i am a sociology major and have a fondness for writing, especially whenever it comes to dissecting media. at heart, i am a poet so even my analysis might contain some sort of little grotesque rawness to it.
interests: succession, veep, mad men, the thick of it, horror in general, harold lloyd films, psychosexual films, paul dano/zach woods/david dastmalchian filmography, character studies, the feminist perspective, religious imagery, joan of arc, homoeroticism in writing, cannibalism used not for love but for girlhood, dissecting gender as a social construct. i might make fanfics in the near future!
this is my personal safe space and i’d like for it to be one for those that interact with my account here! everyone is welcome. my views are quite leftist and i won’t tolerate bigotry, so please be mindful of everyone here.
i’m really excited to continue this blog! i’ve only recently really been active on here and i’ve been quite fun! please don’t ever be afraid to inbox me or message me if you’d ever like to either chat or a question, suggestion, etc. :o)
i really appreciate being able to discuss things with people and while you might see me perhaps post more about certain things than other, don’t be afraid to inbox me about something i’ve not brought up.

🎂 Thurs 13 August 🎨
Act 2 of the LP Show, Liam's livestream concert experience series, was been announced- it'll be on the 29th, Liam's birthday! Tickets are listed (sometimes: veeps keeps putting the event up then taking it down) but not available to buy just yet but that'll be soon I'm sure. An official birthday show sounds so cool, I bet that'll be really good. Niall posted the big winner of his Heartbreak Weather fanart contest plus a favorite entry for each song and they all look great, congratulations to all the artists! Niall says, "Shout out to all of the finalists and runner ups as well, it was a really difficult choice to make." Someone won the raffle for the fifteen minute call with Louis today too, but they're not publicly announcing who so either the winner will tell us about it or they won't.
And! Remember the 'journalist' I was making fun of yesterday for their terrible article about Harry and Louis in Italy? Soooo it turns out the writer was, are you sure you're ready for this plot twist... the most notorious of all the 1D related celeb stalkers, Boopsy!! She's known for, among other things, pushing the (often unreasonably) tolerant Harry Styles to the point where he took out a restraining order against her. If she's looking to move into a new career I support that in theory but based on her work on this site journalism is, uh, not it. As if writing an article about something probably made up wasn't bad enough, she then came up with a whole fantastical backstory based on literally nothing and just... published that. And fans ate it up! With media literacy like this it's honestly no wonder the world is the way it is, ugh. Anyway it being by her explains the 'secret band meeting' spin: getting those reunion rumor clicks is of course good stuff but now I see that it was also fandom politics, an attempt to provide a reason for H and L allegedly being seen together other than, well... you know.
#Niall is also seen at the salon getting a haircut or something. the worker is wearing a face shield with no mask#which studies show provides approximately zero protection for either the worker or the customers#don't do that. still better than Niall though who is of course wearing nothing whatsoever#Niall Horan#Liam Payne#Louis Tomlinson#louis#niall#liam#the lp show#veeps#13 august 2020#boopsy#boy was i right when i said that author would be writing about Harry girlfriend rumors next though she already has!! called it#I seriously don't even understand everyone calling that a Larry article and saying it's a sign of changing narrative like.... how?#a celeb clickbait site simply saying their names in the same place is uh not as unusual as people are acting like#the twitter larrie scene is fully off the rails#and completely uninterested in reality based analysis#this post needs a meme at the bottom: boopsy???#I'm cackling at people's tags today I'm glad people were as blindsided by the boopsy reveal as i was what a plot twist

“copy of a copy of a copy” | analysis & interpretation
i’m a bit late to this as usual but here are my interpretations of the lyrics of louis’ new song “copy of a copy of a copy”!!
disclaimer: these are just my own interpretations, you could see things differently and of course only louis knows the true meaning behind the song, this is just speculation.
from how i see it, there could be several meanings to the song, but mostly i think it’s about being closeted/manipulated/controlled in the music industry. let’s take a look at the individual lyrics:
“it’s an old curse/dreamers diving headfirst”
essentially, it’s been happening for a long time and it’s an evil/misfortune that befalls people. people who are chasing their dreams join the music industry and sign their contracts without really knowing or understanding what’s going to happen to them.
“can’t get through the glass”
may refer to being in a glass closet, i.e. having your sexuality be known by many people but not being able to publicly acknowledge it, so he’s not able to come out of the closet.
“caring only kills love/a kiss won’t bring it back”
this lyric talks about how caring about someone, presumably someone he isn’t allowed to care about, kills the idea of love because of how difficult and painful their relationship is, and even a kiss can’t mend it.
“i know that the first blow hits you cold”
the first time he realized he was being closeted and controlled against his will, it hit him hard, and this may imply that he got used to it after a while.
“young man, hush your crying/dry your tears away”
he’s told to be brave and not cry; may also mean that crying is useless and no one will listen to him. could also be referring to the stereotype that males should suck it up and keep their emotions in.
“you won’t be the first or be the last to bleed”
closeting and manipulation happens everywhere in the music/entertainment industry and he isn’t the only person to experience this.
“every broken heart as far as your eye can see/it's a copy of a copy of a copy”
like the previous lyric, this lyric talks about how this is happening everywhere, it’s happened before and it will happen in the future. talking about how things are unoriginal and are copies may also be about he is forced to be unoriginal and be someone he isn’t, and he has to choose between being authentic or being successful.
“i can hear you, howling 'til your lungs hurt”
louis might either be talking to his past self or to someone who is experiencing the same thing he is experiencing, and here whoever he is talking to is screaming to be heard and seen for who they are but they feel like no one can hear them and they feel lost.
“so let this be your comfort/you're not the only one, no/in a strange way, all in this together/been this way forever, you're not the only one”
again, this is about how he’s not the only person going through this and he can find some small comfort in the fact that there are so many others like him who are being closeted, manipulated and controlled in the industry.
so, overall, i think the song is about how louis is being closeted, controlled and manipulated in the music industry. it may be him talking to his younger self and trying to comfort himself, telling younger louis he isn’t alone and he will be heard and seen.
personally, this song’s meaning brings to mind some of the hidden messages from the “just like you” lyric video, particularly the newspaper articles mentioning george michael’s battle with sony and “professional slavery” within the music industry, but those are just my thoughts. let me know what you think!
