Xbox One: New Tales From The Borderlands
So, a birthday came and went, and with it I finally got my hands on the latest game in the Borderlands Saga! Coming in to this, I thought this was going to include Telltale and be similar to the other one. Boy was I wrong in all the best ways possible. Let’s jump in, also isn’t it nice to see the Xbox One get some love?
Tumblr media
Control your corner of the universe with New Tales from the Borderlands - Deluxe Edition! This Edition includes: - Both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S digital versions of New Tales from the Borderlands. - Tales from the Borderlands Full Game: Play as Rhys and Fiona in this hilarious, heart-wrenching story set on the desert world of Pandora Take a stand against ruthless corporate overlords in this narrative-driven adventure! More info here: https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/store/new-tales-from-the-borderlands-deluxe-edition/9P9JZ8K1TNBM/0010
My Thoughts On The Game:
This game is middle ground pricing, even with the deluxe edition at $50. But, still massive value for how much work went into the game. To boot, I got a digital download code for Tales From The Borderlands and the Adventure Capital Pack. The code is not yet working for me, but based on research they seem to be working on it.
Gameplay... just getting started, the graphics look really good. Classic Borderlands style but you can tell the technology got better. You agree to a couple of things from Take Two and Gearbox to start. And why are people so sensitive that we have to have a content warning? Classic opening by Marcus. (Is it just me or would you pay to have Marcus read anything to you?)
Great music, gameplay is much more like borderlands and a lot less like telltale. Timeline wise this happens after B3. It’s nice to have players you played before but they are now NPC’s. You follow multiple story lines at once. Vaultlander battles are really one of my favorite parts, and I could see that being a spin off/merchandising opportunity.
I truly hope this leads to Borderlands 4, or even sequels to this while we wait for Borderlands 4. But this was so much fun, and even if you need to play the other games to catch up-so worth it. One of the better games I have played in a while. Happy gaming y’all!

been thinking about how rhys was an absolute asshole in new tales? i know that people were upset about it, understandable! (i would be too if my fav turned dickish :(( )
but he did idolize jack. and the series’ whole thing is about how much capitalism destroys lives and worlds. power corrupts and all of that. i know he fought back, but still. people can change!! but yea
i’m guessing because, as a vault hunter, he was afraid of us. respected us? but as a regular citizen, he didn’t care. profits > anything, unless you’re face-to-face with a vault hunter. it makes sense for him to not be a mustache-twirling-villain, but still be a dickhead to some, and friendly with others. morally grey??
i like the perspective of regular folk, also. ngl, tho, i will not be surprised if there’s a turn against the vault hunters again. how they seem to be idolized now? be pretty cool if the vibes were back to how they were in bl1. (i love the godtier vibes of them, but i also love the ‘nobody’ vibes on bl1)
point being: capitalism bad, eat the rhys.

Finally played ntftb and I was expecting it to be much worse than it was.
Badass Superfan and L0U13 have my heart but I wish he was allowed to do stuff instead of being constantly on security duty. Anu and Stapleface should’ve kissed or Anu and Phuong. Considering the writing was very 3 I thought I’d hate the characters but I actually enjoyed most of them. The humour was obviously cringy but it’s borderlands so. As someone who didn’t really like the first Tales and doesn’t care about Rhys I’m glad I got him snapped but all his lines felt very Jack like which was painful. Shout out to Torgue who appeared on a hologram did absolutely nothing then left love that for him, don’t understand why Athena would’ve been there though.
Very unpopular opinion but I enjoyed it and it wasn’t the worst game in the series for me.

Something I noticed that I REALLY don't like is just how much current borderlands seems to be trying to diminish Rhys and Fiona's personalities and achievements.
It started out with Rhys in Borderlands 3, where Vaughn implied he was fake and that they haven't spoken in years for some reason??? Then it happened again in New Tales, where Rhys was written as incompetent, and an awful boss that fires his employees for having ONE bad idea.
It also essentially calls him a warmonger that's focused entirely on profits, and has no moral compass beyond "the almighty dollar". Going as far as to explicitly state that that is literally Atlas's motto.
Tumblr media
Aside from all that it also says that Atlas is essentially failing and that Rhys has absolutely no idea what he's doing, which is especially weird considering how in Borderlands 3 it's stated that Promethea is finally starting to do well for itself again, and through Echo logs you hear that even Marcus is impressed with how well Rhys is doing.
So for Rhys we have him losing connection with his best friend and being called an idiot, fake, being mischaracterised as a terrible person that apparently learnt nothing and has regressed as a person to a borderline unrecognisable state.
----------------------------------------------
And now we get to Fiona. Since borderlands 3 treats the female protagonist of Tales as if she just doesn't exist, Fiona's story continues in Debt or Alive so...
SPOILER WARNING FOR DEBT OR ALIVE.
Not only is Fiona characterised VERY strangely in the book but they also just give Sasha credit for some of what Fiona does, and Fiona alone tends to be the target of blame in the book. Oh and she gets compared to Handsome Jack for good measure.
Tumblr media
To start off with, Fiona doesn't even get her wish from the Vault of the Traveller. She gives it to Sasha, and Sasha wishes for a rare Vaultlander figurine of Typhon DeLeon which is destroyed a couple of chapters later. So not only does Fiona not even get to use her wish but the product of the wish gets destroyed anyway so it's entirely pointless.
Fiona also just decides to not be a vault hunter. That conversation she can have with Rhys SECONDS before this happens, about how it suits her, about how she's sad the adventure is over? It's just ignored. She immediately gives it up because she doesn't want Sasha vault hunting and getting put in danger again. Sure she still likes vault hunting but it is immediately given up. (I could write a whole other post about why this bugs me and I probably will).
Fiona has flaws that are addressed in the books, as they should be, all characters have to have flaws, but she is the only one out of the sisters to have flaws addressed. Sasha's are treated as if they don't exist, even when they're very apparent. Fiona learns to not be overprotective, and that she can't stop Sasha from doing things she wants to BUT Sasha doesn't learn anything. She does impulsive things that endanger both her and Fiona, and her risking their safety for fun or on a whim is just never mentioned. (Again something else I'll definitely talk about in another post).
Fiona is also consistently the one who comes up with the plans in the book, while Sasha is either not doing anything or suggesting they take the easy way out. Fiona is the one to start removing the debt cuffs from people while Sasha stands there bewildered, asking what she's doing. Fiona is the one to come up with the plan to scam the billionaires so that they can use the money to free everyone from debt while Sasha suggests just funding Gaige's revenge scheme (and assumedly just abandoning the people in debt??). And Fiona is the one to figure out how to get into Holloway's panic room and save everyone.
Fiona having her moments to shine would be great if they consistently didn't end with her being called an idiot, getting badly hurt, failing, or at one point being compared to Handsome Jack of all people. (Additional point: Sasha doesn't even defend her when she's compared to Jack, which is weird and very out of character.)
This might be petty but the book also gives credit to Sasha for Fiona surviving Bossanova's murder rally in Tales. Which is really weird considering Sasha and Fiona were separated during the entirety of that event. So instead of mentioning a time where Sasha actually helped save Fiona, like in the bio-dome when she was caught by Finch and Kroger, I guess they're actively retconning an event to give Sasha the credit. For some reason.
Fiona also has to confront Sasha about how she's treating Rhys, but then like a chapter later she literally apologises for all that, despite having every right to call Sasha out for that. So again Sasha's flaws are not being recognised as actual flaws and instead it's Fiona who's somehow in the wrong and Sasha learns nothing. Sure by the end of the book she considers Rhys her boyfriend but she is never the one to tell him. Fiona is, because Sasha just doesn't bother to, because it never treats her as someone who has to grow as a person. Sasha is usually either just used as a plot device to progress things or just doing almost nothing while being given credit, instead of being developed like a proper character. I'd call her a shell of what Tales Sasha was but even that feels too generous.
I used to really want to see the Tales characters in other borderlands media, but at this point I just dread it. Because why would I want to see my favourite characters being wildly mischaracterised and mistreated by the franchise?

The Return of AI Handsome Jack
An au/headcanon I came up with. If you want to know more, I written a little about it under here.
Basically, If Rhys kept the ECHO-Eye implant and reinstalled it in the events of Borderlands 3. When Handsome Jack returns, Rhys asks him for help and they come up with a deal. (Which Handsome Jack begrudgingly accepts.) The reason Rhys acts out of character sometimes? That's when Handsome Jack takes control and "helps" Rhys. Once Rhys is back in control, he checks the security footage to see what Handsome Jack has done. Which always ends up with Rhys complaining and nitpicking to Handsome Jack. Always asking Handsome Jack stuff like "I'm not that whiny! Am I...?" or "You seriously think I'd be frustrated for not winning that Zer0 Vaultlander!? Okay, I would, but I wouldn't react like that!"
There was going to be more comics about this idea, but I ran out of steam. This comic was sitting in my WIP folder for months. So, I thought it would be better to post it, instead of letting it rot.
So, alright, thank you for coming to my TED Talk :D

Borderlands: Debt or Alive
"You seem to misunderstand who you're talking to," I growled. "We did this to save you. We're the good guys." "Funny," Fittzwiggins said, a cruel smile curling his lip. "I seem to remember one Handsome Jack saying much the same thing."
Things I was expecting from Borderlands: Debt or Alive--my girls, guns, and fun.
Things I got from Borderlands: Debt or Alive--my girls, guns, fun, Rhysha goodness, Fiona being Very Gay, existential crises, and class revolution.
A solid entry into the Borderlands universe, Anthony Burch doesn't disappoint, returning with the same wit and charm to his writing that made me fall in love with Borderlands 2. Fast-paced and action-packed, this isn't your standard novel and reads almost like a movie script, but it's so much fun, and, well, so MUCH FUN!!!
(If you haven't played Borderlands 2 and Tales from the Borderlands, this book might not make much sense or be enjoyable for you, just a head's up.)
After running and gunning for so long, when con artist sisters Fiona and Sasha finally get their Big Break, they find themselves wallowing in apathy, missing...what, they're not quite sure, but whatever it is, it's preventing them from enjoying their new life of luxury. It only takes Sasha's second death, Fiona's first death, Deathtrap's destruction (don't worry, he gets rebuilt!), Gaige's torture (twice), and an uprising against Eden-5's uber wealthy Elite for them to figure it out, but they get there!
I was hoping--PRAYING--for some Rhysha goodness, and Burch more than delivered; in-between bouts of dealing with her own mortality and the cold realization that nothing awaits her after death, Sasha examines her life, where she's at, what her future holds, and where Rhys slots into it all. I've compiled the following list of Rhysha moments:
Chapter 1 p. 13-14 - Taking place during the last battle with the Guardian, Sasha reflects over the events of Tales, with an emphasis on how she developed feelings for Rhys (and vice versa), largely due to how loyal he was to his friends and the lengths he'd go to protect them. p. 16 - Sasha's death scene, where Rhys is sobbing uncontrollably (described as "heartbreak" by Fiona) and Sasha thinks to herself that he's "[d]umb as a rock" but that he has a "big heart".
Chapter 2 p. 20 - Fiona wonders if she's going to be stuck in the Vault forever while Rhys is free to go and hit on her sister. p. 25 - Sasha's eyes light up with joy, something they haven't done since they were kids--and, Fiona adds in a footnote, since Rhys started flirting with her (she tries not to think about that though). p. 27 - Sasha wishes for a Vaultlander collectible from the Vault, something she learned about from Rhys. He told her about them when she "accidentally brushed my hand against Rhys's arm and he got so nervous he wouldn't stop talking about these things for twenty minutes." Fiona tells her that she can do better, to which Sasha tells her to stop being "such a mom" and that Rhys is "a nice guy".
Chapter 4 p. 39 - The sisters discuss the Vaultlander, Rhys, and whether or not Rhys has ever taken his Vaultlander figures out to play with them (he told Sasha that he hasn't because they're a "sound financial and artistic investment"; the sisters both think he has though).
Chapter 6 p. 50-51 - NOT Rhysha related, but just one--and the most significant--of the many sections that screamed "FIONA LOVES WOMEN!!!!" to me. There is no hetero explanation for the amount of detail with which Fiona observes Holloway. NONE. Chapter 9 p. 71 - Sasha says that meeting Rhys couldn't have been for nothing. Chapter 10 p. 79 - Sasha is able to get a debt cuff off of Fiona because Rhys taught her how to hack. This comes in handy several times throughout the book. Chapter 15 p. 111 - Fiona notes that Sasha ECHOchats with Rhys almost every day. Chapter 16 p. 114-116 - Half of this chapter is Sasha talking to Rhys. Both admit that they miss each other, even if they're in a weird are-we-or-aren't-we place. Sasha thinks that Rhys is a kind, handsome himbo with ambition. Rhys blushes while saying she means a lot to him and Sasha realizes that she likes him. Chapter 31 p. 220-226 - Soooo much happens in these pages! The first thing that comes up is that Sasha notices the beginning of Rhys's mustache and that he's altered his voice. The tone turns serious when Rhys asks if he can call her his girlfriend, to which Sasha apologizes and says that she's not ready for that until she knows that she can promise him with certainty the future that he deserves. Rhys understands and is willing to do whatever is necessary as long as she's happy, to which Sasha admits to herself that she can see them being more--eventually. Things take a MORE serious turn when Rhys asks her how she's doing and Sasha tells him the truth--the full truth, which isn't something she normally would do, but feels comfortable doing so with Rhys because she cares about him and actually wants to let him in to her life. Rhys helps the sisters get back on track and renews their fighting spirits. Chapter 32 p. 227 - Fiona once against questions why Sasha is crushing on Rhys when his brilliant idea to disguise the guns he sent to them is by writing "Not Guns" on the pallets. Sasha says that his heart is in the right place, to which Fiona responds, "[w]here his brain should be." p. 228 - Sasha quotes Rhys ("Mustaches are a facial accoutrement that convey trustworthiness, masculinity, and culture without ever needing to leave the cozy confines of one's upper lip."), much to Fiona's horror, and when his parroted words succeed in swaying the secbot to let the "mustache wax" (pallets of guns) through, Sasha gets an air of "see-Rhys-can-be-useful-who-looks-silly-now" about her. Chapter 34 p. 237-242 - Taking up the bulk of this chapter, Fiona and Sasha argue over Sasha and her inability to make up her mind when it comes to whether or not she wants to be in a relationship with Rhys. Fiona points out that they're not living out of a caravan anymore, not constantly on the run, and that Rhys is a "decently handsome idiot who worships the ground you walk on", going so far to admit that she--Fiona--even likes him. She encourages Sasha to make a decision one way or the other--it's only fair to the both of them. Chapter 36 p. 255 - Fiona hands Sasha a note that Rhys handwrote for her that he sent with the gun shipment. A "big, dumb smile" appears on Sasha's face. Epilogue p. 308-309 - Fiona sends a text-only ECHOcomm to Rhys. Fiona thanks Rhys for everything he's done for her, and for being good to Sasha (of course, she follows up by saying that if he's ever NOT good to her, she'll hunt him down and fill his brain with bullets). She reluctantly congratulates him on officially being Sasha's "long-distance boyfriend".
…and there you have it! RHYSHA GOODNESS IN THE YEAR 2024 THANK YOU ANTHONY BURCH!!!!!
Even without all that Rhysha goodness, Debt or Alive is a solid book and a wild ride with plenty of love, laughs, and anarchy. (Side note: The sisters' last name is Dillon? Dillon?????)

An assortment of Borderlands headcanons that I have saved up and I'm on when I'm going to ramble about these, but I'm doing it now. LET'S GOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tina would sometimes crochet whenever she fidgets, these would result in cute little yarn plushies that she would give to her friends.
Despite being one of the smarter vault hunters, Maya has shown to be a little dense at times (like one time she asked Lilith if she has extra closet space for her books, Lilith only responded with the most deadpanned face ever imagined while Maya was waiting for an answer) You can blame the monks for that.
Ironically despite being called “The Firehawk” Lilith has a mild phobia of birds (huge ones specifically) She’s ok with small ones like with Bloodwing and Little Talon, though she was taken off once she’d noticed Talon grew way bigger than Bloodwing did.
Hammerlock likes to collect novelty nick-nacks (tea/coffee cups, souvenirs from gift shops, those singing animatronic fish trophy's ECT) and has also dragged Wainwright down the rabbit hole into collecting little trinkets they’ll find while on holiday (One being a paperweight that looked like a eldritch squid god that he keeps on his desk)
Gaige having ADHD is something that everyone agrees with. But I like to add that while she can spend hours reading multi chapter fanfictions on the ECHOnet, she however can’t finish an actual book and would spend hours skimming the same two pages and getting a headache from it. However give her a comic book/graphic novel (something like The Bone series) literally anything with pictures and she can easily get though those in an afternoon.
During her recovery, Angel has taken to age regression to cope with what Jack did to her. Lilith and Gaige understand and would help with her coping.
Clay is definitely the type of guy that can’t be labeled (sexuality wise). But at the same time he’s not too picky on who or what he likes and is open to whatever.
Wainwright and Alistair would host the best house parties hands down, especially during the holiday seasons.
Example: On Bloody Harvest, The Jakobs Manor would become a haunted house attraction filled with all sorts of spooks and treats and during the summer season, the two would invite the Raiders for a big cookout/pool party.
Moze has Hirsutism (excess hair growth in unexpected areas of the body) though it is hardly noticeable because
1. It's usually around her chest and stomach which she would shave off (just because she's a soldier doesn't mean she has to give up personal care and it's really itchy)
And 2. She's been taking hormone medication so it does reduce it
However she'll have some days where she would forget to do either due to mental shutdowns.
Despite Outer Krieg's violent tendencies, he is no moron. He has a very strange patchwork of knowledge, it's anyone's guess what he knows about any given topic.
Tyreen has a deep fear of dating/romance, this mainly stems from the idea that it'll end up like with her mom and dad.
Maya has a very soft spot for children. She really hates the idea that adults would use and abuse one for their own personal gain (like what happened to her)
There have been some days when Maya would use her powers to do the most stupid and mundane things, like phaselocking and feeding herself a pizza because she's too lazy to use her hands.
Unknown to herself and everyone else, Maya has the ability to sense ghostly/supernatural presence. She gets a feeling like she's being watched at times.
Contrary to popular beliefs, the Handsome Jack and Typhon DeLeon vaultlander figures are nowhere near valuable. Ironically it's the Claptrap figure that's the most valuable and most rarest.
Typhons """"""fame"""""" has been dwindling ever since it's been reveled that he's nothing more than a gross deadbeat that took other people's credit, and newer generations of vault hunters see him as a poser
Maya has Astraphobia (fear of thunderstorms). This stems from when she was a kid back at Athenas, if a storm comes by the temple, she would hide and freeze up, praying for it to end. This trauma stems further with the fact that back then she didn't have anyone to go to for comfort.
While thunderstorms are very uncommon on Pandora (at least in the part's where the Raiders reside) when they do come, Krieg is right there to comfort her throughout the storm.
(more TBA later)

WE FINISHED THE BOOK!!! [A day ago, technically]
This is going to be a >>MOSTLY<< spoiler free post, and I'm gonna post my full opinion a week or two from now to give people time to read it. There's a read more just in case.
In my unbiased opinion, I'd give the book a 7.5/10. For what if had to work with [from some of the later games], I feel like things were done well, with the exception of a handful of parts dragging it down. Eden-5 had very interesting world building. They didn't move around much, but it was still cool to see another planet and have a plot not too centered around corporations.
In my BIASED opinion though, it's a 6/10, probably even lower. I'll try to talk about both sides in this post just to be a LITTLE fair.
When the book had it's good moments, they were GREAT. For the most part, Fiona and Sasha were written well, and had good character moments. Gaige was given some of the development she needed, and her dynamic with the sisters was humourous to me. I felt like it did a good job showing a difference between people like the tales characters in the borderlands universe [normal people, and people from games like BL2 [vault hunters that are crazy in a WAAAAY different way].
However, what drops the book down to a six is it's bad parts. I won't say how, but the crystal from NTFTBL [ew], is not only mentioned, but a huge plot point. It's not a secret that I absolutely hated that game, but the crystal takes away a huge universal consequence, but that's a discussion for another post.[and also fucks up what could've been some of the best moments in the book]. Other than that and one other thing, no more mention of that game. There's only one other mention-ish of BL3, and it's not good, but there's only one I can remember. Keeping the other games out of it, imo, was a great idea.
While we don't get to see much of the other tales characters, which is a bummer, it's somewhat understandable. As for the other tales characters, they're absent besides a few cameos from Rhys and some mentions. There are some tales/post tales Rhys moments and mentions that still seem in character, which was nice. BUT, Rhys' absolute character assassination during bl3 and onwards persists in one of his cameos, and the sisters say ABSOLUTELY nothing about it. NOTHING!!! If this post wasn't supposed to be a shorter, less spoiler-y and less opinion riddled, I'd go on forever about how livid I am. Also, the Vaultlander shit was fucking stupid.
I would still at least read a summary of the book at least, if you don't want to read it. There are some parts, for my fellow artists and writers, that can be taken from. But, if you were looking for stuff of ALL the tales characters, or something that COMPLETELY fixed what gearbox fucked up, it's definitely not the book or that. Still, 6/10, the reaaally good parts and the REAL bad parts are at each other's throats constantly. Me and Doglin agreed that there were definitely limitations on what Burch could do, and gearbox probably had say in a bunch of things, but BOY do I have my gripes about this book.

I wish that Rhys and Fiona had actually been teleported somewhere else for another adventure after Tales. I don't like that the treasure of the vault was a wish that ultimately meant nothing anyway.
Rhys had already been starting to build up Atlas so why did he suddenly need more paperwork, Fiona just gave her wish away to Sasha who wished for a vaultlander that ends up getting destroyed not long after. Why would they even have to vanish for a few minutes to get a wish?
AU where Rhys and Fiona both actually get sent somewhere unknown when they open the treasure chest, and find something strange on the other side and they only discover it's purpose as the story progresses. Or where they gain something like an ability based on the kind of person they are.
AU where we actually get to see more of how they've developed, see them meet new characters as they try to figure out a way to get back home and understand why they were sent to this new place. Where they use the skills they learnt before and advance them as they travel.
AU where Gearbox actually progresses stories instead of ignoring the existence of plot points for years, butchering characters personalities, and actually shows characters grow and develop in a way that feels natural.
