Codex Entry #62: Hard in Hightown: Chapter ???

Donnen wiped spilled ale off the bar, listening to the cries of the birds and the crashing of waves outside. Another slow day on the Amaranthine Coast. The tavern didn't get many visitors—just a little too far south of the Antivan border to catch the caravans—but he hadn't opened it to make a profit.

If Jean-Marc Stroud was left behind in the Fade during the main quest Here Lies the Abyss...

He poured a glass of plum brandy from a chipped decanter and carried it out to the patio, where an impressive Orlesian mustache was keeping company with an old Grey Warden playing a minuet on a lute.

Donnen handed the brandy to the Warden, in some deference to his mustache, and the gentleman accepted it with grace, placing the glass on the table before finishing the last measure of his song.

"You have my thanks, guardsman." The Orlesian set the lute on a nearby chair and allowed the brandy to approach his mustache. The mustache did not appear impressed with the vintage.

"It's just Donnen these days," he replied, looking out over the waves. "My time in the Kirkwall guard is over."

"I spent so many years in and around the City of Chains," the Warden sighed. "We're both lucky to have escaped her clutches."

The sun was setting behind them, drawing long shadows on the ground that stretched toward the sea.

"Maybe." Donnen shrugged, watching the waves turn dark in the distance. "Some days, I'm not sure all of me made it out."

"To what we've left behind." The Orlesian raised his glass in a toast, and the two men watched the light fade over the ocean in peace.

If a male Hawke was left behind in the Fade...

He poured some noxious Ander stout from an oak cask into a heavy tankard and carried it outside to a dark-haired nobleman on the patio idly strumming a lute so out of tune, it sounded like some other instrument, perhaps a tuba or a kettle drum, trying to invent music from scratch.

Donnen handed over the tankard, only half-hoping it would stop him from playing any more.

"That's very kind of you, guardsman." Thankfully, the gentleman set aside his lute and took the tankard, putting his feet up on the table in front of him.

"It's just Donnen these days," he replied, looking out over the waves. "My time in the Kirkwall guard is over."

"It's never really gone." The nobleman smiled. "Kirkwall. It finds its way into your soul, and once it gets there, you carry it always."

The sun was setting behind them, casting long shadows from the tavern down to the water. A flock of cormorants took advantage of the fading light to dive for fish making their way back out to sea.

"Maybe so." Donnen smiled, too. "But the world can always use a Champion or a guardsman wherever they happen to go."

The gentleman raised his tankard. "I'll drink to that."

And the two men watched the last of the light disappear in peace.

If a female Hawke was left behind in the Fade...

He poured a glass of red Orlesian wine and carried it out to the patio where Lady Marielle sat, playing a lute for the benefit of a distant flock of cormorants and a sleepy mabari hound.

Donnen handed her the glass with a smile. "Can I get you anything else, your ladyship?"

"That's very kind of you, guardsman." Marielle set aside her lute; the sleepy hound looked up, annoyed at having its lullaby interrupted.

"It's just Donnen these days," he replied, looking out over the waves. "My time in the Kirkwall guard is over."

"Is it?" She smiled slyly over the glass. "You don't think naming a tavern The Watch was a sign that perhaps you can take the guardsman out of Kirkwall, and even out of the Guard, but he never... quite leaves?"

The sun was setting behind them. The hound stretched and ambled over to the table to lay his head on Lady Marielle's knee and beg for table scraps. In the distance, the cormorants took off in a single motion to return to their roosts up the shore.

Donnen smiled back. "Maybe you're right. But tonight I'm off duty, your ladyship."

"Marielle," she corrected. "And to answer your question, you can get me some company. One guardsman might suffice."

And the two of them watched the last of the light disappear together in peace.

If Alistair was left behind in the Fade...

He poured a glass of smoky Fereldan whisky and carried it out to the patio where a sandy-haired fellow was attempting to play the lute. Or murder the lute. Or murder the concept of music itself. It probably didn't help that the man was holding the lute straight out in front of him as if he feared it were a snake that might bite him.

Donnen offered the fellow the glass, fervently hoping it would make the playing stop.

"Guardsman! You came to my rescue just in time!" The blond man took the glass with a sheepish laugh and all but threw the lute into a nearby chair.

"It's just Donnen these days," he replied, looking out over the waves. "My time in the Kirkwall guard is over."

"Retirement is grand, isn't it? No more responsibility, no more senior officers yelling at you, no more Kirkwall..." The other man looked wistfully out at the birds diving into the waves down the coast.

The sun was setting behind them, turning the Amaranthine Ocean a deep sapphire and sending the seabirds back up the cliffs to their nests.

"Kirwall's still out there. Along with all those other things. I just didn't bring them to the bar." Donnen grinned. "So what did you retire from?"

"You wouldn't believe me if I told you." The man gave him a lopsided grin in return. "You want to hear a badly told story about a bastard prince with an unholy love of cheese?"

"Why not? We've got time."

And while the blond man spun his unlikely tale, the two of them watched the last of the light vanish in peace.

If Loghain Mac Tir was left behind in the Fade...

He poured the last dregs of a pale Fereldan lager into a mug and headed out to the patio where an old soldier sat strumming a particularly battered-looking lute.

Donnen held out the mug like a peace offering.

"Thank you, guardsman." The soldier set aside the lute in favor of the mug with a businesslike efficiency. The grizzled mabari curled up at his feet flicked one ear, dreaming.

"It's just Donnen these days," He replied, looking out over the waves. "My time in the Kirkwall guard is over."

"Is it?" the soldier sighed, looking down at the sleeping dog. "If you don't still wake up from dreams about patrols, you're luckier than most."

The sun slipped down another notch in the sky behind them, and the wind coming in off the sea turned cooler.

"You know what I miss?" Donnen said. "The smell of the Lowtown Bazaar in the morning. Two dozen bakeries with loaves of bread and sweet pies in the oven."

"There are worse things," the soldier laughed, "to remember about home than the smell of pies baking." Then he sighed again. "You really are luckier than most."

Donnen smiled. "Maybe so."

The old soldier raised his mug. "Here's to home."

At his feet, the hound twitched her paws, chasing rabbits in her sleep, and the last light faded from the sky in peace.

Hello everyone, back with the third and final post about my Dragon Age: Dreadwolf story ideas and now we're talking about companions and advisors.

As always, SPOILERS for the games and expanded media and also understand that these are simply ideas and not expectations for the new game.

Warriors

Andefels Grey Warden: satisfies the traditional "Grey Warden" companion while also giving further insight into Anderfels' culture and beliefs

Kal Sharok Dwarven Warrior: representative of Kal-Sharok and allows more insight into Kal-Sharok

Mortalitasi-Revived Spirit Warrior: nice Nevarran representation and satisfies the "unconventional" companion (think Shale, Justice, and Cole) . Recruitment could work similar to the Grunt recruitment mission from Mass Effect 2, where you're originally trying to recruit a Mortalitasi mage but they can no longer join you and leave you with their "best work".

Rogues

Scout Lace Harding: somewhat satisfies the previous recurring character returning as a playable character (Oghren in Awakening, Anders in 2 and Varric in Inquisition)

Knight Squire Vaea: extended media representation

Antivan Crow: return of Antivan companion representation

Mages

Liberati Elven Mage: Tevinter Imperium representation

Tal-Vashoth Saarebas: Seheron/Qunari Representation

Rivani Seer-Apprentice: Rivaini representation and could be an unexpected key ally to give information on the true nature of Solas via her relationships with the spirits of the Fade

For now, all of these companions are considered romance options since why not (excluding the Nevarran corpse lol)

Advisors

Dorian Pavus + Maevaris Tilani: Tevinter leaders and could give more insight into the Lucerni political faction that they lead.

Varric Tethras: given his presence in trailers and expanded media, I think it would be for the best to have him as an advisor that can provide resources to our PC via the Merchant's Guild.

The Inquisitor: personal history and unfinished business with Solas and would love for the Inquisitor to have a sorta mentor relationship with the next hero.

Essentially, these companion choices directly line up with the possible origin ideas from the last post. I think it would just be really cool for our PC to have at least one companion they can directly relate to i.e. an Antivan Crow PC talking about previous contracts with the Antivan Crow companion, a female mage Rivani Lord of Fortune explaining to the Rivani Seer Apprentice why they didn't become a Seer Apprentice as well, etc.

his house isn't happy but his family is supportive and also they have given up on telling him what to do long ago. the one time they tried to matchmake him, his perspective wife decided to follow her dreams and ran away to antiva.

depending on how they met it's not impossible he flirted with varric. he will do it again because is he just supposed to NOT flirt with famous author varric tethras?!

tall for a dwarf to go with lucanis being a short king.

your regular hypercompetent servant who is actually plotting a revolution. on the side she's looking for her favourite uncle who disappeared months ago. if he got killed she would like to know by whom and shank them.

conceptually, started as the watson to neve's noir holmes and instead she became a jeeves.

bargained his way into the grey wardens in exchange for help with his clan and now he is faithfully fighting darkspawn - preferably nearby other dalish clans, thank you very much. "wardens can't have families" but no one said anything about not checking up on your allies, did they. spent a few years in the deep roads and learnt some dwarven and also likes dwarven food. depending on the world state he might or might not have spent a night with a warden hawke. he definitely hit on velanna and she said no. his sister is a keeper.

i predict many "no, the OTHER dalish grey warden" moments.

he's supposed to be the stoic type on the outside.

between the circle and becoming an assassin that at least can go whatever the fuck they want, at five years old they already picked becoming an assassin.

i think he'll probably not be a mage but whatever role i think will work better to be a mortalitasi assistent.

also I like the idea that she left a guy at the (metaphorical) altar when she killed a bear for their engagement and realised she was dreading it and would rather go have another round with the bear. she gave the pelt to her mom for safekeeping "i am definitely getting married one day I promise".

she always makes sure to bring jewelry for her mother and her sisters at every arlathvhen (she WILL attend even if it kills her).

there aren't that many options as a vashoth to build a life but sometimes you go hunting and thinking and stumble in people doing cool fade stuff in the woods.

i honestly ship harding so much with one of my inquisitors that romancing her myself is going to annoy me a bit, I can already tell. i really like this guy tho. oldest sister is working for the company lead by my ashkari adaar in a timeline where she isn't inquisitor.

Cold Feet by ____ (Male Hawke/Cassandra Pentaghast/Varric Tethras, 5.7k, Explicit)

Summary: Domestic intimacies and polyamory negotiations. Mostly post-Inquistion.

Reccer Note: Adorable mix of fluff and more steamy scenes. Bonus points in my heart for Varric/Hawke being such a steady start point for this. Varric sounding very much like Varric and ofc connecting with Cassandra through his writing.

Of Solitude and Contemplation by ____ (Anders/Cullen Rutherford, 2.9k, PG13)

Summary: Cullen Rutherford contemplates his relationship with Anders as he goes about his morning routine. Shameless domestic fluff.

Reccer Note: This is one of those ships that I technically like but have yet to see written in a way I could truly appreciate. That being said, this one got very close. My only issue is that whenever I seem to stumble upon fics with Cullen and a mage (various characters), they're always fics from Cullen's POV and lean towards how difficult it is for him to be with a mage. And not, you know, how he was shit to mages and maybe that should be addressed before the blissful happy ending. This fic at least brushes on this, so again. One of the best fics I've read for this ship.

Full Circle by _____ (Anders/Bethany Hawke/Nathaniel Howe, 3.1k, PG13)

Summary: Life would go on no matter what.

Reccer Note: I love when fics about Anders do not ignore Justice. That's a small note, aside from that: great and in-character Bethany, as well as Nathaniel, but it's especially noteworthy with Bethany. Also I'm always impressed with authors who within a small word count can show a progression of a relationship over the years.

Mistakes have consequences by _____ (Female Hawke/Loghain Mac Tir, 1.8k, Mature.)

Summary: In which Hawke has an unfortunate encounter with too many bandits, a fortunate encounter with Loghain Mac Tir, and a bit of accidental nudity.

Reccer Note: I can't be the only one who always finds it confusing and hilarious how Hawke refers to Loghain as their Warden friend in Inquisition. This is an interesting take on that. But mostly I love the way Loghain is written here. 10/10.

The Maker's Sense of Humor by ____ (Gamlen Amell/Orana, 2.8k, PG13)

Summary: Gamlen had given up on finding his soulmate. But the Blooming Rose had become his haunt, and one of the only places he wasn't judged and found wanting. Which is why, of course, he heard the words stamped on his skin from a woman less than half his age, after he'd made peace with the fact he'd never have what his sister did. The Maker had a sense of humor, and once again Gamlen was the butt of His joke. Except this time, there was no joke.

Reccer Note: What can I say? I have a giant soft spot for Gamlen. And he is so sad in this one. I love the melancholy feel of this fic and would happily read something longer for this unexpected ship.

Summary: In days, months, and years, a family is formed.

Reccer Note: I don't read Gen fics very often but this was really a love take and on the few and far between slower moments for this trio that truly made them into the team and friends that they are.

AU to the Dark Horse Dragon Age Comic ‘Until We Sleep’.

Note - I wrote this years ago, probably around 2016 when I was exploring the life of my Queen Cousland had Alistair died. The idea was that this iteration of Elissa Cousland would then appear in fic as the Warden Contact for ‘Here Lies the Abyss’ in DA:I. I’m not sure why I never shared it, I’m not sure why now feels like the right time, but it’s a fic I’ve always been proud of.

'Demons are coming,' the dwarf yelled, cutting across Elissa. 'And the furious Magister who you have pissed off,' he continued jabbing his finger at her.

She laughed. It was a hysterical chuckle. 'I've never met a Magister in my life,' she said, shooting a look at Maric. 'When would I have the time? I've been in Denerim.'

'Elissa.' Maric cut her off with a quiet, authoritative tone she not heard from him before. When she looked at him, he looked concerned. Possibly sad, his hand reaching out to her. 'Let them speak.'

'What? No,' Elissa protested, running her hand through her hair as the nagging sensation ran through her like a cold trickle down her spine. She stiffened. 'Where's Alistair?'

'Pardon?' Said the dwarf

Elissa paid him no heed as she remained focused on Maric. 'Where is my husband, Your Majesty?'

4E 198 — At around 25 years old she faked her death and escaped into Skyrim. Was slowly starving but met a Giant family traveling home after burying the giantess's husband at Secunda's Kiss. They took her in.

The family lived at Steamcrag Camp and consisted of a Grandfather, the grandfather's daughter and his two granddaughters.

4E 201 — At 28 years old a pair of Khajiit Thalmor spies posing as caravan members come searching for her, she is forced to kill them. The companions Vilkas and Farkas come investigating, she defeats them before running to hide in Riften.

Varric Tethras was a dwarf of many talents and resources, generally as unflappable as he was irreverent. It was no wonder that he and Vivian were thick as thieves—literally, though Carver supposed Vivian probably didn’t do as much thieving these days now that she had a mountain of wealth and titles. She certainly didn’t have to anyway, not that a lack of necessity had ever discouraged his sister before.

Varric put his hands on his hips as he surveyed the small pile of dwarf corpses that had been dragged into the cellar of the Amell estate. “When you find trouble, Hawke, you certainly don’t half-ass it. What did you do to piss off the Carta this time? I thought you’d stayed out of their business since that whole nug smuggling disaster last year.”

“Nug smuggling?” Adara asked before Carver could give her a warning look. If Vivian and Varric were encouraged to start storytelling, they risked being here well into the night.

“Less lucrative than lyrium smuggling but somehow more chaotic,” Varric said with a wink. “The docks smelled like nug shit for weeks.” He chuckled. “I’ll tell you about it sometime, Angel.”

There are easier ways to get into Val Royeaux. Several, in fact. But Varric Tethras, fool that he is, has never been one to take the easy road. If he was built that way, after all, he’d have given up his epic romance back when it was still the wise thing to do.

Instead, he’s shivering in the back of a mule cart like an illicit shipment of lyrium, hat pulled low over his eyes and the collars of his duster popped. He looks like just another Carta bruiser without his trademark red silk and flashy gold jewelry, Bianca hidden under his coat for once. Anyone looking will assume he’s off to spend his ill-earned coin on the cheapest ale he can find.

Varric’s got classier plans though.

It’s not easy or cheap to arrange a date in Val Royeaux from Kirkwall, especially when he can’t put the whole shindig under his name. Varric’s willing to put the work in for a special occasion, though, and for this one he’s pulled out all the stops. Flowers. Good wine. The fresh saltwater oysters Bianca likes…

It’s been ten years since their failed elopement, after all, and that’s the damn closest thing they have to an anniversary. May as well celebrate in style.

As the cart passes down one of the broad avenues, Varric leaps nimbly from the back and strolls nonchalantly to a private little inn tucked behind ornate hedges styled like druffalos of all things. As if anyone in Val Royeaux has seen a druffalo in their lives. He hums under his breath, amused by the improbability of it all, and ducks through the private entrance down the charming cobblestone walk.

His contacts were right, it’s the perfect place for a secret assignation. No wonder it’s one of the most popular spots in Orlais for philandering nobles. That almost certainly means it’s being watched by a nice little cabal of spies, but Varric’s been drowning in paperwork for months. The inevitable assasination attempt will be just the excitement he needs.
