If you want an example of how crappy MMA cornering can hurt fight careers, look no further than Paige VanZant. Breaks her arm vs Jessica Rose Clark but goes back out there for the last round and still loses. She’s had to pull out of like 3 or 4 fights since and has only been able to fight once since January 2018 because that same arm keeps getting hurt.

UFC Fight Night 124: Stephens vs. Choi Results
By Joel Croichy
1/16/2018
Sunday, UFC returned to action with UFC Fight Night: “Stephens vs. Choi” inside Scottrade Center in St. Louis. In the headliner, Jeremy Stephens (27–14) stopped Doo Ho Choi (14–3) via TKO in the second round.
Once again, Stephens displayed on Sunday his incredible knockout ability after dismantling prospect Choi inside the second round. It was a feeling out process in round one with both competitors staying in the pocket and exchanging strikes. The power Stephens possesses in his hands gave him the clear advantage, and he landed huge shots that rattled his opponent. In round two, while Choi was moving back toward the cage, Stephens landed a monstrous right that dropped him. With Choi laying on his back, Stephens then delivered a series of ground strikes which led to the TKO win.
In the co-main event, Jessica-Rose Clark (9–4–1) extended her winning streak to three after scoring a decision win over Paige VanZant (7–4). For the most part, both competitors seemed matched up evenly in the wrestling department. With Clark having the size advantage, she successfully secured and maintained dominant positions over her opponent. VanZant was down on the cards heading into the final round, but she showed ton of heart and relied mostly on kicks while on the feet. In the end, all three judges favored Clark as the winner.
Impressively Kamaru Usman (12–1) extended his winning streak to 11 after picking up a unanimous decision win over Emil Meek (9–3–1). Usman relied heavily on his phenomenal ground game to out-wrestled his opponent for majority of the fight. Kicking off the main card, Darren Elkins (25–5) secured a comeback win over featherweight newcomer and heavy striker, Michael Johnson (17–13). In the first round, Johnson was getting the best out of Elkins by displaying his sharp striking skills. Elkins kept his composure in the second round, took the bout to the ground, and then delivered strikes to his opponent. Eventually, Elkins found an opening, locked his arms under Johnson’s neck, and captured a submission win.
With this win, Stephens now has earned his second consecutive win and captured his 27th victory in his career. With a featherweight division filled with elite competitors in the top ten, it’s going to be exciting to see who the UFC matchmakers will pair Stephens up next. See the full results below:

I’ve spent the last 45 minutes trying to contextualize a bunch of semi-related but completely separate incidents with the UFC in recent months. Couldn’t really do it beyond “being a woman in this sport must suck a lot”. Instead, here are my two trains of thought:
UFC 228: The UFC announces the 228 PPV card with a surprising 3 women’s bouts. Flyweight champion Nicco Montano vs Valentina Shevchenko, Jessica Andrade vs Karolina Kowalkiewicz, and Tatiana Suarez vs Carla Esparza. Great card (in my opinion) featuring two amazing fights featuring 2 former strawweight title challengers, a former UFC champion, and the best prospect on the women’s side of MMA. Well, apparently someone bitched and moaned to Dana about there being 3 women’s bouts on the card so Tatiana Suarez vs Carla Esparza gets bumped to the FS1 prelims in favor of a welterweight scrap between Niko Price and Abdul Razak Alhassan. Alhassan wins by 43 second knockout to open the card. 3 weeks later, Alhassan is indicted on sexual assault charges stemming from an incident back in March. While I most certainly do not fault the UFC for booking Alhassan because ‘how could the know?’, it does leave a sour taste in my mouth that a PPV spot was basically taken from Suarez and Esparza because the UFC got cold feet on too many women’s bouts on a PPV. As a result, they end up putting over a guy who turned out to be an alleged rapist instead of exposing one of the most talented women’s prospects with a great backstory to their PPV buying audience.
Since June or July, the UFC (particularly Dana White) has been openly flirting with the idea of signing disgraced former NFL star Greg Hardy to the promotion. He’s been featured on a couple of UFC Fight Pass cards, in fact acting as the draw for a lot of media coverage to the platform. And I can see why he’s enticing as a prospect: he’s a world class athlete in a division devoid of world class athleticism. Or any athleticism for that matter. The problem is he’s an awful human being who lost his NFL job (in part anyway) because he beat the crap out of his ex-girlfriend and threatened to murder her. During this time it has been announced the UFC had a 9 figure deal worked out with ESPN to move UFC fight cards on to multiple ESPN platforms, including their new streaming service ESPN+. The first of these ESPN+ cards will be at the Barclays in Brooklyn on Jan. 19, 2019. It will feature arguably the most popular women’s fighter on the roster at the moment, Paige VanZant. VanZant was originally scheduled to fight fellow flyweight Rachael Ostovich. Ostovich, however, has been forced off the card. About a week before this post was made (two months out from the fight), Ostovich was attacked in her home by her husband. The assault left Ostovich with a broken orbital among other injuries. And while it is an extremely sad situation, it’s not too uncommon to find victims of abuse on the women’s side of MMA. Ostovich’s original opponent Paige VanZant recently released a book detailing how she was the victim of sexual assault and how it almost drove her to suicide. This past summer, UFC flyweight Andrea “KGB” Lee’s husband had a warrant put out on him due to domestic abuse charges. UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas has been vocal about the sexual abuse she experienced while growing up. Former UFC flyweight Bec Rawlings has a public split with an abusive ex-husband who was later arrested on domestic assault charges with another woman. And these are the women the UFC want Greg Hardy to share their platform and resources with. I can’t imagine many of them are comfortable with that. In fact, there’s at least one that has been vocal in her opposition to the UFC doing business with Hardy: Heather Jo-Clark, herself a survivor of domestic abuse.
And that’s only recent stuff that scratches the surface (Rumble, Team Lloyd Irvin, War Machine, Thiago Silva, Travis Browne, etc). Point being a lot of women - fighters, hobbyists, and fans - use this sport as a refuge. Would be nice if it treated them with the same kind of respect.
