Some language thoughts

More train of thought stuff, this time on language. Raatasingh has a lot of words for friend, all of which begin with the prefix ta-. I was thinking about whether Rishi Muluhai Awir would call Dekha Banjaree Keroor her nephew, or if Raatasingh even has a word for nephew, and then I was like, of course it does. They are obsessed with family lines and even track lineage with line names, so of course they have a word for each member of the family.

Tangenting briefly, Raatasira only (currently) recognize two genders, and so I don’t forget this because I cannot find my notes anywhere, the words for he and her are us (oos) and ut (oot), him and her are useh (oo-SEH) and usat (oo-SAHT), and his and her are pa useh (pah oo-SEH) and pa usat (pah oo-SAHT). Pa indicates that something belongs to the following noun.

I think most nouns in Raatasingh are non-gendered, except for ones that are dealing with actual people. I think that animals are lumped with inanimate objects as non-gendered. We’ll say that it and its are uze (oo-ZAY) and pa uze. Anything in Raatasingh that has the “z” sound was cribbed from Takasingh*, just as an aside.

OKAY back to my original uh, train. Ta- means friend, so I think that ge- (said with a hard “g”) will indicate familial relation. They have a word for every conceivable family member. Here are a few I am pulling out of the top of my head:

Gen: (GEHN) Parent of either sex. Geneh is father, and genat is mother. However, this is just to indicate familial relation, it is not a term of address. Raatasira paski address their parents as Apan, Apena, or Abi... kind of depending on context and on personal preference. So if Banjaree was introducing you to Geet, he’d say, “This is my geneh, Geet Banjaree Keroor. Abi, this is the nice person reading this post.”

Get: (GEHT) Your child. Geteh is son, getat is daughter. Parents usually call their child kiki or aori or oo, all of which are onomatopoeia for infant noises. This is like calling your child “kiddo” or “baby” or “cutie”.

Gehen: (geh-HEN) Sibling. Geheneh is brother and gehenat is sister. If you want to indicate birth order, you add the number afterward. So gehenat 1, gehenat 2, etc.

Genur: (GEHN-oor) Grandparent. Genureh is grandfather, genurat is grandmother, and you also indicate maternal or paternal lines by adding vansheh or vanshat. So, genureh vanshat is your maternal grandfather. To achieve great-grandparents, you add numbers to indicate how many generations removed.

Gei: (GEHee, one syllable) Uncle. Geieh (GEHee-eh, two syllables) is uncle, geiat (GEHee-aht, two syllables) is aunt. Again, add vansheh/vanshat to indicate paternal/maternal lineage.

Gehai: (GEH-hai) Cousin. Gehaieh is male cousin, though it’s often shortened just to geh, and gehaiat is female cousin. Again, you can indicate lineage. They have totally different words for second, third, etc. cousins, which I am not going to go into.

I think that adopted children would get the friend ta- prefix, because they are not related by blood. This in no way belittles the adopted child, as Raatasira paski put huge value in adopting children. It just indicates the kid is not genetically related to their parents. We’ll say an adopted child is taet (TAH-eht), or taeteh or taetat.
