Celebrating Black History Month with an innovative horticulturalist who made the commercialisation of Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia) possible.

Natural vanilla flavour comes from the dried seed pods of the Vanilla orchid, which is native to Mexico. In its native habitat, the orchid relies on two local bee species to pollinate the flowers. Non-pollinated flowers do not form the pods, and without pollinator there would be no source of natural vanilla flavour.

Edmond Albius (1829 – 9 August 1880) was a horticulturalist from Réunion. Born into slavery, Albius became an important figure in the cultivation of vanilla. At the age of 12, he invented a technique for pollinating vanilla orchids quickly and profitably. Albius's technique revolutionized the cultivation of vanilla and made it possible to profitably grow vanilla beans away from their native range.

French colonists brought vanilla beans to Réunion and nearby Mauritius in the 1820s with the hope of starting production there. However, the vines were sterile because no insect would pollinate them.

Albius's enslaver, Mr. Beaumont, taught him the basics of botany, including how to fertilize flowers. In 1841, Albius invented a method to quickly pollinate the vanilla orchid using a thin stick or blade of grass and a simple thumb gesture. Using the stick or grass blade, field hands lift the rostellum, the flap that separates the male anther from the female stigma, and then, with their thumbs, smear the sticky pollen from the anther over the stigma.

Sadly, Edmond Albius did not profit from his innovation and spent the rest of his life as a humble kitchen servant.

It’s been a year since I acquired my darling Vanilla Planifolia, and I’m happy to report it is going strong. I repotted it for the first time in early spring. I decided to repot it again; this time in terra cotta for better aeration, and I added a moss pole for it to climb. I used: •1/2 inch square mesh opening, green vinyl coated hardware cloth •Wire cutters • 4 inch standard cable ties (a.k.a. zip ties) •8.25 inch terra cotta flower pot •Long-fiber sphagnum moss •Orchid coarse blend bark mix •Perlite •Sphagnum peat moss Using the wire cutter, I cut the hardware cloth and rolled it into a cylindrical shape. Then opened it to lightly pack in damp long-fiber sphagnum moss that was soaked in water, with excess squeezed out. After wrapping and slightly overlapping the wire mesh openings, I zip tied them, and cut the visible excess plastic with wire cutters. Upon placing the pole in the terra cotta pot, I filled in the bottom half of the pot with the blend of orchid bark mix, perlite, and sphagnum peat moss. Do not use standard potting soil for orchids. I added the vanilla orchid root ball, filled in more aforementioned substrate mixture, and topped off the last 1-2 inches with long-fiber sphagnum moss (for moisture retention). After training and wrapping the short vines around the moss pole, I gave it a generous watering to settle everything in place. Still young, this orchid won’t be mature enough to support flowers and vanilla pods for a couple more years. Ela é uma orquídea trepadeira; então por isso é importante deixar um apoio (parede ou árvore, por exemplo) para ela poder subir. Ela também não tem raiz embaixo, apenas dos lados no caule!! Você pode daí adubo foliar, e Bokashi (adubo orgânico). Uma mudinha dessa demora uns 3-4 anos para florir.
