Forget Me Not
Attended on Thursday, September 6, 2018.
Playing at the Revue Stage.
This was my first show of this year’s Fringe. There was a decently sized audience for the performance being at 5:00 - the theatre was about half full.
Rob Gee has had experience working as a registered nurse in psychiatric units around the UK and Australia. It is evident that many of the show’s details, regarding both the inner workings of the senior care facility as well as how dementia gradually robs people of their identity, come from someone who has experienced them. The most telling detail is the “baffle lock”: the doors of the ward could not legally be locked, so there would be a regular doorhandle and one placed near the top of the door that needed to be used at the same time for the door to open. For folks with demetia, they could only remember one doorhandle at a time.
The play begins with a letter from Elsie, who knows how her dementia is likely to progress and asks that she be treated with kindness and dignity. And that her husband be treated gently. It is a sincere moment that had me tearing up.
The ward has thirty patients and four attendants on shift at a time. We are introduced to many of them through the eyes of a fairly sympathetic attendant. The mystery aspect of the plot involves the accidental death of Elsie and the investigation that her husband tries to make into its details as his memory begins to fade as well.
The strength of this show rests on its honest look at the workers and patients of the ward. Rob moves between characters with clarity, and I appreciate that I was never confused about who was talking. To do this, the character details were often on the side of cliché, such as the uppity ward manager and the low-voiced male nurse. I feel as though the mystery aspect of the plot was less interesting than the insider’s view of the politics and patients of the ward. Setting up plausible suspects and evidence that may lead to a possible killer or simply be a red herring was less engaging than hearing about the patient would did get through the baffle lock. I spoke with another audience member who absolutely loved this show, so I am of the mind that my expectations for the mystery part of it were pretty high going in.
Forget Me Not has won many awards at multiple Fringes. I expect that it will be more difficult to gets tickets to this show as the festival continues.

Recap day 4
Well today was a very fringy day. We saw a bit of everything today. Our top show of the day was operatic panic attack. TJ's shows are generally super personal but this was even more so. It really felt like TJ was baring his sole, just putting it all out there. Panic attacks are no joke and he does an amazing job of demonstrating what it feels like when you're having one. He's outdone himself with this show and got a well deserved standing ovation and many hugs!!
We also loved how to really, really love a woman. This show is exactly as the title describes in great detail. It's a show about loving the
pussy in painstaking detail. Very educational and very very funny.
The Russian play was our final show of the day and we are so glad we stuck it out at the Firehall. We were there for 7 hours! The main character in the show is very funny playing young Sonja and the older Russian flower shop owner. She makes you really care about her so when things go wrong and stop being so funny you really are sad for her. Well worth the wait and a great way to cap off the nite.
In between we saw Ingenue which was pretty good. The songs were very good and she has an amazing voice. The devil's daughter was a great little drama with the ominous father overshadowing his daughter's entire life in a disturbing way.
And finally R'n'J which was interesting but very very confusing. Still don't really know what happened but it was interesting to watch. But that's the fringe for you. A little bit of everything and not everyone feels the same way about it.

Fringe-for-all!
Wednesday the 5th
The Fringe-for-all was a blast as always. There are shows that seem to fly under my radar until I see their bit at the FFA. The quote of the night was “Sometimes you have to get a little weird and hope for the best.”
The following are the shows that impressed me the most last night.
Unscriptured
I will hopefully be seeing this tonight. I do have a vollie pass but will be monitoring the number of tickets left for this and all of my Arts Umbrella shows as I expect the tickets will be selling out quickly. And all the previous shows I’ve seen from Travis have been such fun.
Vampires in Barcelona
The snippet was a story about the ghost at the Cultch. He seems like an engaging storyteller.
Poly Queer Love Ballad
The snippet we heard was fantastic. Great singing, funny story, excellent delivery.
Flute Loops
They were held over at the Edmonton Fringe. This is also the only show I desperately want to see that just will not fit in my schedule.
Hardly Trying
Solo show performed by the writer who insists that the show has not yet been written. She’s seventeen, local, and had such an engaging presence on stage that I had to add her show to my lineup.
The ADHD Project
Another show where I was impressed by the actor to the point of adding the show to my schedule.
Fake Ghost Tours
This one just seems like so much fun.
Banned in the USA
The snippet was his theory of Genesis being like a developer’s blog. He seems like someone I could easily listen to for an hour.
Al Lafrance
I am very intrigued by the premise of this show, about how sleep deprivation can mess with your memory and perception. Another really engaging performer.
No Belles
Much more poetic than I was expecting. Seems like it will be a well-crafted show.

Day 8
No I'm getting sad! Only 4 more days of madness and then it's back to that mysteriously growing pile of laundry. But wait, No! Next week we have pick plus. Yes yes. So today we are off island all nite. You belong here at Havana. Can't wait to see Martin's show. The food, yes, a meal. Maybe at via tevere. Then were checking out some clown action in my name is Sumiko at what lab and finally st 16 for lights, camera and odd jobs.
Haven't heard a word about it. Now off to do our 10,000 steps.

Angels and Aliens
Attended on Saturday, September 8, 2018.
Playing at Studio 1398.
I am a huge fan of shows that are presented well and have an interesting premise. This one fits the bill perfectly.
The main idea of the show is that two roommates had had an awkward encounter the previous evening and were struggling with the fallout. One of them discovers a phone app for two players where one is an alien influence and the other is an angelic influence on a simulated developing world. The story then flips between the roommates, the angels of the Human Relations department, and the aliens Bob and Bob.
The plot is meant to be a metaphor for the relationship between the roommates, yet I found myself far more intrigued with the game dynamics. The world developed along the same lines as human history, which led to some very funny social commentary. The angels were confused as to why all of the religions valued similar things on paper yet continued to fight with each other about the details for getting to heaven. “Why would they get to come here?” The aliens kept giving mankind new technology so they would stop relying on “dinosaur goo” and it would then be weaponized.
The show is masterfully put together. The way that the different spaces are established, the tight script, and the polished delivery all make this one of my favourite shows of the Fringe. It’s also something that I’ve come to expect from shows with Jeff Leard, who did The Jupiter Rebellion a few years ago and was another favourite show of mine.
