Snap from a recent project on Barnston Island. QUICK FACTS - Barnston Island is located within the traditional territory of the Katzie First Nation and was settled by Europeans in the mid 1800's. The Island was named after George Barnston, a Hudson's Bay Company clerk. Agriculture has been a prominent land use on Barnston Island for over a century. The Volcano is a new painting that I started last year while contemplating the power of Black rage. So often we can hold onto a festering ball of debilitating anger. But I always remind myself that we as a people have always had the power to transform anger into an anchor centred in love, protection, resilience, and justice. If that anchor becomes too heavy, we can transform it into a bouquet of flame and give it away 🌋

The Breath of Life is a new painting inspired by a visceral need to breathe both physically and spiritually. In my previous series “Dance of the Summoner”, I found myself exploring the aesthetic qualities of spirituality and cosmologies from the Nigerian diaspora. But recently I have been challenging myself to embody and inhabit the lessons, metaphors, and creation stories in a more personal way. The Breath of Life is a meditation on the elemental aspects of inhaling, exhaling, filtering, creating new systems, and literally giving yourself life.
