'Battlefield 4' Beta looks promising

The beta version of “Battlefield 4” was released Tuesday by EA and DICE, and I’ve enjoyed about 8 hours of playtime during the past week of virtual military goodness. Whether you are familiar with the series or a first-time player, the game is fun and does not disappoint, even in its beta version.

Introduced in “Battlefield 3,” the Battlefield Battlelog is used to view stats and weapons/unlocks and to browse servers on which to play. The Battlelog now allows players to customize their soldiers as well as change the weapon loadouts, view an overhead map of the game running in real time and much more. Also not found in the beta version but set to be released in the final version, Commander Mode will be operable from the Battlelog, which will be available through a mobile app on both iOS and Android devices. This gives players the option to use a tablet or smartphone as a second screen, so they even have something to do while waiting for a respawn.

New changes to the game’s engine, Frostbite, are very apparent when playing on a server. There is a bit more detail in characters, vehicles and other textures. The Conquest map “Siege on Shanghai” is pretty enormous and offers much to do. There are tons of things with which to interact across the map including elevators, containers, doors, security gates and more. The complexity of things to do in the map is surreal. Also, with the new Levolution features, DICE has introduced things that can be altered within the game’s map. Players can destroy roads or even bring down a skyscraper to change the entire map for some interesting gameplay-altering mechanics.

The physics have been adjusted to the game as well. “Battlefield” has always been a graphically stunning video game, but DICE has taken it a step further and improved upon the realism even more: Statues, pillars and buildings can be torn apart, and water now reacts realistically. Also, players can now dive in the water instead of acting as a sitting duck for enemy fire.

I saw a vast amount of weapons during my play-through and even unlocked a few. Players still can change the barrel, optics and other options as before, but classes have been tweaked a bit. For instance, the Recon class now allows for C4 support, and the Support class now can use the XM25 Airburst grenade rifle, also known as the “newb tube.”

Although it’s the beta version and sometimes freezes and lags, the game is ridiculously fun. It’s definitely a step up from “Battlefield 3.” With new mechanics, physics and mobile integration, “Battlefield 4” should have no problem replacing “BF3.” It’s a shame there are only two modes — Conquest and Domination — with one map and only a few vehicles. This player can’t wait for the full version, as it will be a Day 1 purchase for sure.
