How To Order Custom Valves With Ferrea Racing Components
Tumblr media
[embedded content]
Generally, when it comes to regulators, a lot of people just rely on what goes along with the heads, whether it’s an helpful aftermarket solution, or whatever comes by your cylinder head porter. But , once we all well know, the primary of this hobby is doing different things, and doing so, you are probably going to find yourself in a scenario where the off-the-shelf options won’t meet your needs. Whether it’s because you have an oddball combination or because you’re simply doing something custom.
Understanding this, Ferrea Racing Components offers custom valves to accompany its wide selection of off-the-shelf performance control device options. However , one of the most challenging areas of ordering custom valves is getting the particular specs exactly right. “We obtain a lot of requests on how to start the custom making valves, ” states Ferrea’s Zeke Urrutia. In order to accelerate that process for everyone involved, Urrutia offers these tips for the four vital measurements.
These 4 measurements (head diameter, upper still left; overall length, upper right; originate diameter, lower left; tip size, lower right) are the cornerstones to get a custom valve order began. From there, the Ferrea tech series can help with all the other measurements based on the application.
Mind Diameter
Could one might seem obvious, as it is the most-often-referred to measurement whenever discussing valves, correctly measuring it is necessary. In the case of trying to match an existing control device, using calipers, simply measure the mind of the valve from edge in order to edge. Not a difficult measurement in any respect, but a crucial one.
Overall Length
Another crucial, but simple to measure dimension is the valve’s general length. By simply measuring from the suggestion of the valvestem to the face from the valve with a set of calipers, you can find the valve’s overall length. Something to note here, is the more exact you can be here (more digits towards the right of the decimal point) the greater. You might also need calipers longer than the regular 6-inch variety if you have valves that will measure longer than six in .. It sounds obvious, but most people just have a six-inch caliper in their resource.
Stem Size
Probably the simplest measurement to take and the hardest in order to mess up is the valve stem size. Measuring to the thousandth here is sufficient to get the proper valve stem size.
Tip Duration
The last from the four major measurements is the suggestion length. That measurement is in the top of the valve lock groove towards the tip of the valve. This can be difficult, as you’ll need to use the cutter edge of the caliper to fit inside the lock groove for an accurate dimension.
The Ferrea custom valve purchase form contains every possible measurement on the valve needed to create a design. Fortunately, the tech line can help you along with most of those, once you know your 4 major specifications.
With those four measurements, together with your application — be it naturally equiped, nitrous, turbocharged, or supercharged — and your valve lock groove design and the number of valve lock grooves, you’ll be ahead of the curve once you reach out to Ferrea’s tech line, that will help you complete the custom valve form (found here) and get a person into a set of valves that are ideal for your application.

Weekend
Santa Cruz trip
Brought sleeping bags for overnight at New Brighton State Beach. Highway 1 down, Soquel to ice cream up. Caltrain home from Sunnyvale.
Notes: - Significant hills on the way there: Skyline to watertower on the way to Pacifica, the winding thing out of Pacifica to Devil’s Slide, long steep hill somewhere between HMB and Pescadero, two other similarly steep hills that required some downhill momentum but were still long and grueling, then a few after Pescadero that just required momentum. - Scariest part: going downhill towards Pomponio State Beach, I was feet in the triangle to gain momentum and almost at the bottom of the hill when suddenly a blue sedan pulls directly in front of me cuz they’re trying to pass the car in front of them in the northbound lane. SUPER scary. Fortunately I was kinda close to the shoulder. If I had been in the middle of the southbound lane they woulda killed me. - Left late at 10:30AM after fiddling with racks and such; got into Pescadero around 14:30; Capitola around 18:00. Got drinks and dinner then back to campsite. Stars were nice. - Leaving NBSB at 7, got donuts at Donut Station, then onward to Soquel. Not as bad as Loma Prieta, which I did with Conrad last year, but still grueling. Some other cyclists passed us and we never caught them. - After Summit Road, got on Los Gatos Creek Trail, hit some horrible downhill steep gravel nightmare (gravel is not for me). Then rode through Oak Meadow Park. Folks in Los Gatos are considerate and self-aware???? amazing. Take notes, San Francisco. The trail was quite nice as well. Rode through Campbell for a while, which I also liked (nice/interesting landscaping), and eventually got to Mitsuwa. - After ice cream and snacks rode to Caltrain during which we passed through more nice landscaping and I got a flat. Diagnosed flat and arrived at Sunnyvale Caltrain Station, where my tire gave out immediately. Rediagnosed on train and discovered puncture right near the valvestem. No idea why. This was my first experience using CO2 cartridge so maybe I fucked up. - Upon arrival at 4th and King we hit up REI for air (patched my tube but ran out of CO2) and stocked up on two more cartridges.
Overall: - good scenery, great riding partner. - Also now I know I can ride anywhere on the gangster now that I’ve ridden this. It was struggle but it got done. Ratio was 47x19 again.

I bought my ultra-rare dream car from a museum! via /r/cars
I bought my ultra-rare dream car from a museum!
It's also been featured on Car & Driver, Hooniverse, Top Gear (Philippines but still) and a few others. Even living in SoCal, I've only bumped into one or two others at car shows.
That's right, it's a Takayanagi Miluira!
Or not.
Here's some pics for you. It's better than you'd expect.
Now, you may have checked my flair and wondered how I could see so few at car shows. Is it an off-year Shelby? Is it that 2009 Iacocca? Both of those were in the same exhibit, but no. On the bright side, it's a Mustang too. On the not so bright side, it's a Mustang II.
Specs:
88hp 2.3L 4 cylinder, 4spd, 6.75" rear end
Base model notchback.
Only year that didn't come with a V8 at all
Can't physically fit a V8 due to core support
Options: Ghia Interior (mostly), AM Radio, dealer installed whitewalls, bumper overriders and side molding, and of course California Emissions
Little backstory, my school had field trips all the way through High School and when we went to the Petersen (both times) it was always between exhibits when everything was being moved around. Fantastic experience. A new exhibit called Mustangs Forever: 50 Years of a Legend was going to open the next day, so I peeked my head in and started laughing. Of all the cars to put in view of the entrance, they chose this‽ So of course, my friends and I all laugh at it.
Cut to about a year ago, and I'm screwing around on eBay for a car to supplement my barnfind CJ-5 and what do I see but... Well, long story short I won after the other bidder backed out. Went out to get it and boom, it's LA Fashion Week that night so the whole parking lot is full of decorations and curtains and stuff. I head around back and talk to the man in charge of the cars, who was overseeing the transport of the original Green Hornet Black Beauty and a 1938 Delahaye Type 135M Competition Roadster by Figoni et Falaschi. He disappears inside and comes out with my car on an ultra-rad $20,000? car transporter. We get it loaded up on the U-Haul trailer and drag it home.
Since then, I've gotten it running again (sitting for 4 years) and replaced the brand new looking tires that were from 2007 and made it shake at 60 MPH. Seriously, the tires were in better shape than the year-old tires on my truck. I've washed it with soap twice and both times something has broken. First the valvestem extenders got caught on the track at the car wash and popped out of the wheel, and then the D in F O R D fell off in my hand the next time I tried washing it by hand. I now understand why the hardcore Mustang guys use baby wipes to clean their cars. They'd disintegrate otherwise. Before I inevitably take heat from the detail guys for running it through an automated car wash, nothing has changed on the car since the '70s and the washes have only gotten more advanced. If it could take it then it can take it now.
My favorite part of the car has been going to shows with it. One time, at the Supercar Sunday Christmas show, I rolled in behind a bright orange G-Wagen 4x42 and a matching Aventador. As I was waiting in line, some guy shouted over at me, "HEY! Lee Iacocca got fired for that!" which made my day. A little later, some guys my dad's age walked by and mentioned how they would have ignored it a few years ago but now it's really cool. At another show I got a "what the hell is that?" from the peanut gallery as i pulled in.
The best upside is being immune to roasts. What are they gonna tell me, it's a Mustang II?

Fixing Out of Round Steel Wheels
What do you do when you find the wheels on your ride are out of round? Worse yet, what if the company you got them from is no longer in business? As we found out when we needed some custom work done with our 8-lug wheels, we turned to Wheelsmith, the wheel experts in Corona, California.
The father and son team of Bob and Chris Sage have been in the wheel manufacturing business for decades, with the elder Sage having come from Western Wheel in Fresno back in the early ’70s (a company that is deeply rooted in hot rodding’s history). In 1992 they started Wheelsmith, and now their lineup of wheels has many diameters and styles, including a wide range of spoked-wheel configurations, which are becoming increasingly popular nowadays.
Our special case was a simple 8-lug, 16×8 steel wheel that had gone out of round. The original manufacturer was no longer in business and that particular wheel was no longer offered, so Wheelsmith took us up on our quest to have our old wheel centers added to a new hoop.
The process is simple but what makes Wheelsmith different than most wheel manufacturers out there is the hands-on quality control that happens day in and day out. No excuses, just exactly what you want the way you ordered it. We followed along as they made the swap, making quick work of the jam we were in, and now we’re back on the road again! CT
The old wheels were out of round and no longer made with the 8-lug pattern in the 16×8 size hoop we needed, so Wheelsmith came to the rescue and made a custom set of wheels for us.
Before the center gets knocked out, a measurement of its backspace was made: 4 1/16 inches.
Using a plasma torch, quick work was made of the five welds holding the center to the hoop. Extra cuts were also made from the edge of the wheel across the hoop to help loosen things up.
A large piece of brass is used to hammer out the old center.
The center’s old weld edges were then ground off.
In preparation for the new center, the valvestem hole was punched in the new Wheelsmith hoop.
The mounting surface of the old center was also ground to ensure it’ll mount flat to the brake drum.
Since these wheels will be powdercoated, the hoop seam is also ground flat.
Wheelsmith’s Rico “Ricky Bobby” Avila prepares the machine that will accurately press the center to the correct backspace measurement.
With making minor adjustments, the 3-ton press gently places the wheel center where it needs to be.
A double-check of the center’s location reveals it to have the correct 4 1/16-inch backspace.
To make sure the wheel’s center will be perfectly vertical in the hoop, minor adjustments are made after consulting a dial caliper.
Spinning the wheel with the dial caliper reveals the center is now perfectly centered in the hoop.
After tack-welding the center in place, Avila MIG welds the five sections where the wheel center touches the hoop.
Now it’s off to the powdercoater along with the other three wheels.
