In the 1950s, Monteiro joined the Portuguese Colonial Police in Goa, where he interrogated Goan liberation movement activists.[10][3] Much of the brutal torture during interrogations took place at Valpoi Police Station and, eventually, Monteiro became infamous and feared throughout Portuguese India;[7] by the closing years of Portuguese rule in India there were even several local theatre songs of the feared Agent Monteiro.[10]

Grande Island and Malvan Island are popular scuba diving spots where you can dive into the depths and experience the beauty of colorful coral reefs and schools of tropical fish.
For those who prefer to stay closer to the surface, snorkeling is a great option. Many tour operators provide snorkeling equipment and guided trips, allowing you to witness the underwater beauty without extensive training.

Pitter-Pattering in Goa!
Contradicting its tininess, the beautiful land of Goa never ceases to amuse its visitors. Although widely popular to be visited during warmer days, Goa is a delight in the monsoons equally. This land of beaches, picturesque sceneries and a superabundant list of activities is a wondrous treat during the rains! Here are few things to consider visiting Goa during the monsoons –
1. Pocket Friendly Vacation
From flight tickets to plush accommodation, everything is cheap during the monsoon in Goa. As its less frequented during the rainy season, one can enjoy 5-star stay options at incredibly jaw dropping prices. With travel and accommodation into place, your monsoon trip to Goa will hardly pinch your pocket.
2. Private-Beach Experience
Be ready to expect less crowded beaches, no waiting-lines at restaurants, empty roads, less noise and lesser chaos. The otherwise buzzing state of Goa comes to a lazy halt during the monsoons. You can literally ‘dance like no one is watching’! Also experience the exquisiteness of strolling on a private beach as there are hardly any tourists wandering.
3. Visit the mighty Dudhsagar Waterfalls
This sight is a must-visit during the rains on your trip to Goa! A pride of the state, this mighty waterfall is in its full glory at this time of the year. Witness lush greenery, a misty evening and a breathtaking sight of the Dudhsagar Waterfalls. The adventurous in you can also enjoy thrills of white water rafting, popular in this season.
4. Wildlife at its Best
Why would one visit a wildlife sanctuary in Goa? The answer remains – to experience nature at its best! With the rains cleaning down the sanctuaries and spreading greener spaces, Goa offers an exotic treat to animal lovers. Tourists can explore the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary which is located in North Goa near Valpoi to be able to spot Bengal Tigers. Equally frequented are the Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary and Mollem National Park along the Goa Karnatak border. Children can also marvel at the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary which hosts a park, a mini zoo and nature trails.
5. Spice Plantations
Exploring the flora of this region, one cannot miss the spice plantations spread extensively from kitchen gardens to professional farms. Some spice plantations like at Savoi-Verem are a popular attraction in the state. Highly recommended by locals, these plantations come alive beautifully during the rains. Take a guided tour to experience the aroma of cinnamon and cardamom uplift your senses.
So pack your bags, as the rain Gods are ready to pour over the hot state of Goa! Experience Goa in a totally different light to rejuvenate and have a splendid vacation! Bon Voyage!

WATERFALLS
The moment people land in Goa, they are exited about the parties and beaches. It’s justifiable since these are the primary highlights of Goa, but the state has a lot more. We are talking about something that is known to only a select few, those who know the state beyond its usual tourist attraction "The waterfalls". Hidden away in the lush Western Ghats, there are several of these cascades of cool water in the state that would refresh any worn out soul. So go ahead reading list of the must-visit waterfalls in Goa:
Hivre Waterfalls
Hivre is a village positioned seventy-five km from Panaji in Sattari Taluka. From Hivre you can see the Sahyadris mountains whose peak just blend into the sky, while its feet appear to float on a sea of green fields. And somewhere in between this, a patch of white catches the eye – the distant Hivrem waterfall.
Yes one can go right up into but only after a brisk walk of about 45 minutes, including some tough climbing. After panting and puffing, the Hivrem waterfall finally stands right before your eyes ! Its cooling nature make one gasp with pleasure as the pains of the workout just get washed away in the crystal waters .Hivrem is a picturesque part of Goa that is little known and less explored. Hivrem is a village that plays hard to get – it is situated 15 kms from Valpoi.
The trek is about 7- 8 km through dense tropical vegetation. You may come across the Indian giant squirrel or catch a glimpse of deer or the wild Indian Gaur. Birdwatchers can feast their eyes on a variety of rare species also present here.
Tambdi Surla
This waterfall is 90 minutes away from the temple. If you are visiting the temple, a trek to the waterfalls should be a must in your to-do list. The falls is located amidst thick forest, so it is recommended to take a local guide along. The trek might take a little more than 90 minutes depending on the steep ascent.
Once you reach the waterfalls, you will find your painful trek a worthy adventure. The breathtaking nature, cascading falls and the drizzle on your face, it is the best thing you will ever experience.
The trail from the temple to the Tambdi Surla waterfalls is quite simple and easy to follow. While on your route, you will also find a few streams flowing down the hills. The fresh air and pristine water will definitely make you fall in love with the place. Initially, the path of trekking is quite wide but gradually the path narrows.
Though you won’t come across animals like leopards on your way yes, be prepared as it is home to a large number of reptiles, small and big. You may find a few snakes or some other small animals. The best thing about the trek is spotting colorful birds which can’t be seen in the crowded cities.
Dudhsagar Waterfalls
At a distance of 71 km from Panjim Kadamba Bus Stand, 50 km from Margao Railway Station and 10 km from Kulem, Dudhsagar Falls is the largest and highest fall of Goa. It is one of the must visit Goa tourist places and is often represented in promotion of Goa Tourism. Dudhsagar Falls is another popular attraction not to miss in a Goa tour packages. This falls is a four tiered waterfall located on the Mandovi River in Goa. This waterfall is amongst India's tallest waterfalls with a height of 310 m (1017 feet) and an average width of 30 m (100 feet) at it's peak. This falls is located inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary, at the border between Karnataka and Goa states.
Dudhsagar literally means a Sea of Milk in the local Konkani language and gets its name as it appears like an overflowing sea of milk. It is a four tiered waterfall with different ways to reach each level.
