Today we uphold the values of the lnternational Brigades, the brave volunteers who risked their all to fight Fascism in Spain while Franco dispatched orders to massacre Spanish civilians, sending the Nazi Condor Legion, the CTV of Mussolini and the Moroccan troops to exterminate the resisting working class citizens who supported the Spanish Republic. While Franco ordered the bombardment of civilian targets and the national treasures at the Prado Museum, the lnternational Brigades endured terrible fighting conditions on what was to them foreign soil. When Franco admirers and fascist supporters fill their mouths with 'patriotism and national pride', remember who planned and executed the Spanish Holocaust. In memory of my good friends and comrades who served in the lnternational Brigades and who would have thoroughly enjoyed reading the news yesterday about Franco's impending exhumation. In memory of David Lomon, who was imprisoned and tortured by Franco's troops in Spain. In memory of Patricio Azcarate, who endured the trauma of the Battle of the Ebro at age 17 and would have cried with relief yesterday. Thinking of all our comrades who suffered the reprisals and lost their relatives in Spain or Mauthausen. Thinking of all the Spaniards with stolen identities thanks to Franco. Justice is about to be served at last. It is a drop in the ocean, but it is the beginning. Since the majority of the Valley of the Fallen memorial is built into the mountain side, the majority of people traveling across Spain wouldn’t even know it’s there except for the gigantic cross that has been placed on top of the mountain.
