Snow Days
Tumblr media
While there is presently a winter surge hitting the northern half of the country, last month the Gulf Coast had a snow storm that shut down much of the areas from New Orleans to Pensacola for a few days.  Warnings of blizzard like conditions popped up on my phone the morning of and here in Mobile, Alabama our 130 year old record for single day snow fall was broken with up to 7.5 inches of snow recorded.
Tumblr media
These aren’t the kind of weather conditions most people on the coast are use to experiencing (myself included), so of course I wanted to get out and experience it while grabbing some good old weather features with my camera.  I’ve experienced extreme weather in the forms of more hurricanes then I can easily name and some tornadoes as well but this was the first honest snow storm of my adult life.
Tumblr media
I didn’t want to get on the roads in this storm partially because I lack all wheel drive on my car but also because I was worried how all the other drivers would handle the rare snow-and-ice covered roads, so I decided just walking around my area of town would have to do.  The last extreme winter storm that made it’s way through the southeast was about 4 years ago.  I was working on a film production in south Georgia at the time and while I had enough cold weather clothing to get through a week and a half of night shoots in freezing temps without getting sick, I wasn’t exactly comfortable.  “Never again” I told myself and started stocking up on some winter gear essentials thanks to a few end of season sales.
Tumblr media
Although I was layered up underneath it, the puffer jacket from Eddie Bower kept me nice and toasty while some great photography-oriented winter gloves from Vallerret made it easy to operate my cameras.  My sneaker boots from Forsake are waterproof so combined with the thickest pair of Smart Wool socks I own I was able to keep my feet warm even when covered in snow.
Tumblr media
My camera’s needed cover as well, so I had a basic Manfrotto rain cover over my Fuji Pro 3 with a nice 23mm 1.4 prime for my close shots and a solid ThinkTank cover on my Fuji XH2s with 50-140mm 2.8 for those compressed shots of the snow falling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As I’ve said earlier it’s rare I have to photograph in conditions like this, so being able to take my winter gear and cameras for a walk let me safely test drive shooting in heavy snow conditions (especially if I ever find myself on several weeks of overnight shooting again during a winter surge). Snow, especially a snow storm, is so rare down here that I kept making excuses to go back outside and walk around the neighborhood looking for photos (logging over 6 miles according to my Apple Watch). I ended making a solid set of 17 images that I sent to ZumaPress for licensing. I wish I could experience weather like this like this at least once a year, allowing winter (which feels more like spring/ fall most months on the coast) to feel like a real season. It was really a joy to experience for myself and I know all the kids in the area who got out of school for the week will be talking about it for years to come.

Reposted from @filiphrebenda EN: Again and again - the best moments are often unexpected. This one is from our autumn expedition to Iceland. We were traveling with the group to the south of the country when we suddenly seen this amazing scene in front of us. We quickly parked the cars, ran outside with the equipment and looked for an interesting foreground, until the interesting "ufo cloud", swirling around the hill, disappeared. We were fast so we made it! A scene like this is just unique. I am very glad that we responded quickly ⛰ ___________________________ SK: Zas a znova - tie najlepšje momenty sú často nečakané. Rýchlo sme odstavili autá, vybehli von s technikou a hľadali zaujímavé popredie, kým nám ten zaujímavý “ufo oblak” krútiaci sa okolo kopca zmizne. Boli sme rýchli a tak sme to stihli. Queen of the Dolomites: sunrise on top of the world
It was a still, windless night when my alarm buzzed me away before 5am, with the stars still twinkling outside and no light yet on the horizon in the Dolomites this past January.
Knowing I was in for a treat, I flung off the covers and bundled myself up with multiple merino layers beneath my ski gear. Today was going to be great!
While I have never professed to be a morning person, sunrise on top of 3000 meter mountain in the Italian Alps can tempt even me out of bed, as long as there an espresso or two thrown in there. I’m glad I can always count on that in Italy.
Come wintertime, there is a very unique experience offered in the Agordino region of the Dolomites. Every Friday you have the chance to take the cablecar to the top of the Marmolada mountain very early in the morning and watch the sunrise from the platforms at the top at 3,265 meters.
Known locally as the Queen of the Dolomites, I was excited to pay homage and was prepared to fangirl accordingly.
30 photos that prove the Agordino in the Dolomites is a winter wonderland
And breakfast at the Punta Serauta is included afterwards. Think bottomless bubbles, all the pastries and cakes, endless cured ham and meats (because Italy) and all of the cappuccino! All hail Italy!
You then can ski one of the most famous runs in the Dolomites, the 12 kilometer “la Bellunese” run back down to Malga Ciapèla, the longest run in the area.
You can also take the cable car back down if skiing or long runs aren’t your thing, or perhaps if you have wobbly tired legs from too much snowboarding the day before (I’m not speaking from experience here or anything…)
Learning to snowboard in New Zealand where there aren’t cable cars or gondolas to the tops of the mountains, I’m always so impressed by the infrastructure in Europe and their ability to built a way to the top of a massive peak seemingly with ease.
The famous Marmolada cableway to the top of the mountain is impressive, to say the least, and even if you don’t ski, you should definitely take a journey to the top on any trip to the Dolomites.
It’s made up of three segments that connect Malga Ciapèla (at 1,450m), with Coston d’Antermoja (2,350m), Serauta (2,950m) before heading all the way to the summit station at Punta Rocca (3,265m).
The day before while skiing below I could see the shimmering iconic Marmolada glacier below, and I was excited to head up to the top of the mountain for sunrise.
It was absolutely frigid and dark when we all piled in the huge cablecar pre-sunrise to head up to the top of Marmolada, packed in close with all our skis. With the windchill at a balmy -20° C, I was glad for the extra layers.
We were halfway up to the top when I realized I didn’t have my phone with me. Completely panicking I forced the guys we were with to use the “find my phone” feature only to confirm it was in the parking lot.
Phew, must have left it in the car. Onwards!
The history is strong in this part of the Dolomites, and during WWI the border between Italy and Austria-Hungry ran across the Marmolada, making it the frontline for fighting in the region. Soldiers lived in deep tunnels inside the glacier for years and warfare was conducted high up on the mountains. It was around then that the via ferrata system was created here.
You might have even heard about it once and a while in the news as the glacier retreats, sometimes soldiers’ belongings and even their bodies are rediscovered on the ice. Morbidly fascinating!
Being the absolute history nerd that I am, I was positively frothing to check out the Marmolada Grande Guerra: Museum of the Great War at one of the cableway stops – in fact it’s highest museum in Europe clocking in at 3,000 meters.
My Vallerret Markhof gloves were ESSENTIAL in these freezing conditions to take photos
The sky was just starting to lighten when we emerged on top of the world at the cablecar station of Punta Rocca.
So cold I can only describe it as white walker weather, you could only have your hands bare for a minute or two before you lost all feeling in your fingers. It was so cold that my breath froze on my hair into icicles and created a layer of frost on my camera where I breathed. If I had my phone with me, the battery would have surely died instantly.
Call me crazy, but I find that crisp frosty cold very beautiful. The snow sparkles and the world seems frozen in time, almost as if we were inside a snow globe about to be shaken. I love it.
And New Zealand has made me tough. Living in a cold place without central heating for years has hardened me up, and most people had either scattered back inside for breakfast or begun their first ski run down la Bellunese back down to earth by the time the sun actually began to peep out over the mountains.
I couldn’t believe it; they were missing the best part.
All of the sudden the mountains exploded with color, with Sella in the distance lit up orange and gold and beams of sunlight trickled between all the peaks in the distance. It was absolute magic.
It was in that moment, watching the world wake up from the top of the queen of the Dolomites that I fell in love with the Agordino. What a place! I truly felt her immensity and scale and privelage for getting to experience it in such a wonderful time of day.
And to be rewarded with treats and cake afterwards? And get to snowboard down? What. A. Day.
About 6 hours later we returned to the carpark only for me to discover that I hadn’t left my phone inside the car, rather it had fallen out of my pocket into the snow slush next to the door of the car and frozen solid. But to my delight, after sticking it into my pants for about 15 minutes, it de-thawed and worked just fun!
Have you ever experienced a sunrise like this from on top of a mountain? Have you met the Queen of the Dolomites? Spill!
Many thanks to Dolomites Maadness for hosting me in the Agordino – like always I’m keeping it real – all opinions are my own, like you could expect less from me!

IP Roundtable (EP-212)
Click the title of the article to read this post on Improve Photography, which includes all media files mentioned.
Update: Mike Thompson on Facebook told me about the Midi2LR conroller.  It’s open source and you can pick up a $60 midi controller that looks quite nice for using Lightroom.
Update: New Tamron 70-200.
Topic 1:  WPPI Report
Who had the coolest session?
What companies at the expo were most interesting?
What’s a technique you learned?
What print companies caught your eye?
Is it a conference worth attending?
Topic 2: Improve Photography Plus.  Where we’ve been, where we’re headed.
Sandy is now working on IP+
One class a month added, extra when we can
More meetups coming soon
Midroll: Squarespace
Zenfolio
Topic 3: Photo Buds
Rusty Parkhurst: This was really a turning point in my photography journey.  Not only does it challenge us to get out shooting more, but it is also good to have someone along for safety reasons.  Especially when venturing out into the wilds for landscape photography.
Photography workshops are a great way to meet new people and make friends that could become life-long friends.  It’s great to have someone to bounce ideas off of and to get advice from as well as gear recommendations.
Question of the Week:
Traci Agnew: Since my iPad is dying, I want to replace it with something that I can also edit photos on. (I primarily use Lightroom) Someone recently told me that the new iPad pro is good for editing. Anyone have any experience with that or should I look at a macbook? I use an iMac at home and want something that is convenient to take on vacation with me.
How to decide what gels to use (½ CTO vs Full CTO) -Sandy
I shoot a lot of events, and need to use gels often. If I’m in a new place, and don’t know how yellow the lights are, I personally will just set my kelvin to 5500 (no flash), and see how awful it looks. If it’s SUPER yellow, I use a full CT.
Is there a better way to do it? No one taught me how to do it that way, so I’m not sure where I came up with it to tell you the truth.

What to pack for a trip to Antarctica
Packing for an adventure overseas can be stressful at the best of times. But packing for Antarctica? Where do you even start? Last January I headed down to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula with Quark Expeditions.
It took 10 years of travel for me to become the packing queen that I am today; it didn’t just happen overnight, guys. And packing for a month in Antarctica was the ultimate test for me. BRING. IT. ON.
25 photos that will inspire you to visit Antarctica
In fact there was only one thing I needed to buy for the whole trip, can you guess what it was? Everything else I already owned from my adventures around New Zealand. Honestly my house looks like an ad for Backcountry.com. I should start doing gear rentals.
To be fair, I did overpack, which is one of my common mistakes but I’d rather be safe than sorry, and a month at sea with no internet meant I needed a few extras, like games, books, journaling things, and maybe a cheeky bottle of gin.
While there are plenty of helpful packing lists out there, and every trip will usually send out its own list too, I wanted to share my own personal experience of what you might need for an expedition cruise down to Antarctica as well as the subantarctic islands of South Georgia and the Falklands.
Gin aside, here are my best tips of what to pack. Enjoy!
10 things that surprised me in Antarctica
Not recommended to go naked in Antarctica, though it’s a lot of fun I hear
If pictures could show the wind….
Outer layers
Step 1. Everything you wear on the outside in Antarctica needs to be waterproof, windproof, and penguin-poo proof.
And by waterproof, I mean REALLY waterproof, not sort of waterproof. I’m talking Goretex here or something similar, don’t be cheap because the weather down on the last continent can only be described as wild and unforgiving.
You will get wet a lot. And also not necessarily because of the snow or rain, which trust me, can happen at a moment’s notice, but for the zodiac boat rides to and from shore or cruises. The swells can come out of nowhere and you’re gonna get wet with the spray of the sea if not soaked. And it’s rough salty water too that can destroy your stuff after a while, go heavy duty. If I didn’t rinse my gear regularly in the shower, it would get caked with salt.
One of the coldest days
One of the warmest days on the Falkland Islands
This means waterproof pants and windproof shell/rain jacket with a hood. Waterproof gloves or mittens. I have started using these really cool photography gloves by Vallerret that are super handy where you can pull back the end of the finger and thumb to use the controls on the camera.
All the trips I’ve been on provide you with rubber muckboots or gumboots for the landings, but I bring hiking boots too.
If you travel with a company like Quark Expeditions, they give you one of their signature special yellow parkas, which has a shell and a removable fleece puffer inside.
North Face bib      Trekking Pants     Hiking Boots      Photography Gloves
That is all poop. Not mud. At all.
Jarrad Seng’s take on activewear, what lurks beneath the rain pants
I have a few different pairs of pants I would wear, and even wear my snow pants sometimes, though they were getting a bit tight after 3 weeks of bottomless buffets on board (yikes) though this year I upgraded to Goretex bib snowboard pants, which have a bit more, ah, room shall we say in the waist department.
Also pack a tight beanie or two, it’ll be cold and no one likes cold ears, am I right? Also it’s windy as all hell, remember where you are: the roaring 40s, furious 50s, and screaming 60s. If your hat isn’t tight, it’ll be a goner, and you’ll be in trouble for littering in a pristine environment, even if you didn’t mean to.
Batten down the hatches as they say.
Beanie 1         Beanie 2           Jacket 1            Jacket 2
Inner layers
Underneath my rain jacket, I usually wore several layers I could pull off on land if needed. Since moving to New Zealand five years ago, I quickly became obsessed with merino wool aka the magic fabric.
It dries fast, wicks away moisture from your skin, keeps you warm when you need it, and it doesn’t itch, and it doesn’t smell! This means you can rewear it over and over again on the trip. Even my underwear is merino. I do change that though.
Thermal top 1        Merino hoodie        Thermal top 2         Puffer jacket        Flannel Shirt
I start with either a short sleeve or long sleeve thin merino shirt, followed up with a merino hoodie. I’m not kidding, I’m obsessed. I usually bring 3-4 merino shirts and one hoodie and one or two fleece shirts I can layer.
And if it’s really cold I’ll wear a thin puffer jacket on top before putting my wet weather gear over it. As they say in New Zealand, we are not here to fuck spiders i.e. not mess around.
The best base layers have thumbholes – all Mons Royale does!
I wear a pair of merino leggings underneath my wet weather pants, the same thermals I wear when I go snowboarding in the winter. I usually bring two pairs.
My feet are decked out in the thickest wool socks you can find. I bring several pairs, and by several I mean like five pairs, no one wants cold feet though they stay pretty warm inside the good boots the ships provide.
I also bring a pair of thin glove liners or thin gloves I can wear easily than my preferred big old mittens or wear inside my mittens.
Don’t forget my wooly merino undies and sports bras! They are game-changers, guys. And I also have a merino wool neck gaiter or buff that I always wear.
Merino leggings            Merino sports bra           Wooly socks         Merino neck warmer
Extra boring bits and bobs
If you guessed the one thing I had to buy for this trip was seasickness meds, you were right!
I don’t actually get seasick really, but who’s gonna take that chance on the notorious Drake Passage? Not me, that’s for sure. My doctor prescribed Cyclizine, again we’re not here to fuck spiders with some lame ginger tablets or hippy patch. Gimme the real stuff. These are the roughest seas on earth.
I had two camera backpacks, one large and one small for the trip depending on the landings and the weather, and I also had a few small dry bags I could chuck stuff into if needed.
Also be sure to double check what kind of outlets are on board the ship, they move all over the world and sometimes it can surprise.
The ugly sweater diaries continue… Jarrad can’t be tamed
I brought a water bottle of course, along with the other necessities like sunglasses (used once), earplugs (just do it, even if it’s not for snoring roommates the booming of the ship in storms is loud as), an eye mask (there’s no nighttime and also I day nap a lot), and sunscreen, you know, since we destroyed the ozone layer.
For down time on the ship, of which there is heaps, I wore normal casual comfy clothes. The temperature on board can actually be pretty warm so I would have t-shirts on hand and some easy shoes I could wear around, though you want non-slip ones for when you go out on deck a lot.
I also brought my favorite Onepiece onesie, which I shamelessly wore all the time! And I might add received more than one compliment on. Which might have been sarcastic but who cares. It was so comfortable, and it wasn’t like I was trying to meet anyone or anything.
Everything gets shoved willy nilly into my favorite large North Face Duffel. An icon. Can you go to Antarctica with anything less? I don’t think so.
Camp Duffel                  Day Pack              Camera bag             Dry Bags
Fun stuff
Now for the stuff you really want to know, all of the fun and random crap that made it inside my Mary Poppins bottomless North Face duffel bag.
Where to begin?
Yahtzee! You will be spending days at sea with total strangers and no Facebook. What to do? Board games! They usually have some on board but I also brought my own, from Yahtzee to Uno to Scrabble among many others, it’s a great way to meet people in the beginning.
I also brought my own pillow because I’m a princess. And an insomniac, and anything that helps me sleep better is worth its weight in gold.
Heaps of books! I love reading so I downloaded a few fun novels on my Kindle which were great to read in bed when we had 10 meter swells and Yahtzee was out of the question. I also brought half a dozen paperbacks too, all books about Antarctica and the early explorers. If you only bring one book, make sure it’s Shackleton’s Endurance. It’s incredible to read from the comforts of a modern-day ship.
I also brought a blank Moleskine sketchbook that I used to journal and draw during the trip. I used to always do this when traveling but have stopped in recent years and it was a great way to go back to my roots.
And finally, don’t forget a swimsuit! Bathers, togs, whatever you call them. You’ll likely have the chance to do the polar plunge and jump into the icy waters which I highly recommend.
While it’s important to pack all of the essentials because the weather in Antarctica is unforgiving, it’s also a trip with plenty of downtime to make sure you pack a few little treats and goodies for yourself too!
What did I miss? Have any tips for packing for the Antarctic? Share!
