Valentine's Day with Kayce Dutton is a handpicked bouquet of wildflowers from the soft, quiet meadow where you had your first kiss, the one that turns golden when the setting sun washes over it.

It’s slow, tender kisses in the darkness of your bedroom, when the sky outside is wavering shades of black and blue just before dawn starts to break, when the birds have just begun to become restless in the trees, ready to sing.

It’s breakfast in bed and a steaming hot bath nestled in Kayce’s arms.

It’s a trail ride and a picnic—desserts long forgotten as you kiss him senseless in the swaying grass. As he places a violet behind your ear.

It’s a crackling bonfire, curled up in Kayce’s flannel as he strums away at a guitar, singing a song he wrote for you.

It’s you and Kayce and your shared breath and heaving chests as you climb into his lap and forget the rest of the world exists under a blanket of stars.

(Please suspend your disbelief and forget that it’s very cold in Montana in February for the sake of this 😂)

Driving hours home from college to surprise your boyfriend for Valentine’s Day may not have been the best decision—given that you pull up to his street only to find his ex’s car parked in his driveway.

And your dad’s away on a business trip, so you can’t even hang out with him while you’re in town. Thus you resign yourself to a miserable evening binging bad movies in his living room as you make use of whatever freezer-burned ice cream lurks in the kitchen.

That is, until you swing open the door to your childhood home to find none other than Santiago Garcia leaning over your dad’s fish tank with a container of food in his hands.

Perhaps you’re a little too lonely, or maybe you’ve just had a stupid crush on your dad’s handsome best friend for far too goddamn long. Whatever it is, something compels you to share the embarrassing, sordid details of your love life with Santiago as he leans against the kitchen counter, gazing at you intently as he sips a cup of coffee.

Later, when you’re half undressed and climbing into his lap with your breathy sighs and kiss swollen lips, Santi thinks to himself—when your dad asked him to “check in on the house,” fucking his daughter probably wasn’t what he had in mind in between "feeding the fish" and "watering the plants."
