I am once again deeply, extremely unwell about Garrus and Shepard's eye colours. What do you mean Garrus has tiny specks of green in that blue. What do you mean when Shepard looks into his eyes, into that blue dotted with green, she sees the home planet she should know but doesn't. What do you mean her eyes are green with little lime tint. What do you mean this is the homeworld Garrus knew, before it burned before his eyes. What do you mean they literally see home in each others eyes. How could I ever be normal about that.

I remember Garrus complains a lot in the third game when you take him to an ice world but I forgot he would complain about this even in the first game.
Put on a sweater, bird boy.
Tumblr media
Liara profusely apologised after the mission thinking she had made some MASSIVE social mistake and overthinking it until she was in a state of anxiety. As is ME1 Liara's way.

I am endlessly enamored by Garrus’ change across the 3 games. The way he refers Shepard as Commander in ME like he’s speaking to a living god rather than a person, to the breathlessly reverent way he says “Shepard… I thought you were dead,” when you meet him as Archangel, to the confident and almost jovial way he greets you on Menae, as if he never had a doubt in his mind that Shepard would inevitably show up for him.

"To be loved is to be known" is a quote that I've been thinking about a lot recently, especially when it comes to how well that quote can work with garrus and Shepard's relationship. Both platonically and romantically.
Even before his romance, from the moment you recruit garrus, he's checking up on Shepard without any prompting. "Frankly, i'm more worried about you. Cerberus, Shepard?" He knows that Shepard wouldn't be working with them without a damn good reason, so he accepts whatever reason Shep has, instead choosing to voice his worries and rejoin Shepard as if those 2 years never happened. He trusts shepard enough to join a potentially dangerous workplace, knowing shepard would not allow anything to happen to him.
Not to mention that Shepard didn't exactly get to officially ask Garrus to join the crew, he just woke up in a new Normandy med bay and they both knew he would be there until the end. No Shepard without Vakarian, and all.
In mass effect 3, regardless of romance or bro/femshep, Garrus is the one to get Shepard to rest after Tuchanka. He knows that besides Earth, losing Mordin was the first personal hit that Shepard has taken since the war started. Being a pessimist, he is also more than aware that it won't be the last and that there's only so much that platitudes can do. So he does what he can, reassuring Shepard that he will keep an eye on things (unromanced) and will wake her (romanced) if anything happens. He knows the stress and burden that's been placed on her, so he does what he can to lessen it just enough to get a few hours of sleep.
My personal favourite romance scene in the 3rd game is the conversation with him after Thessia, despite Shepard's worsening mood when speaking to the crew post-mission, he continues as normal. He doesn't make a huge deal out of the mission and instead, Shepard is met with relief with the news about his family, critical thinking when discussing the call he made, then sharing her own thoughts before allowing herself to receive his comfort.
Garrus knows what Shepard needs in these circumstances, he's always there to give her the truth as well as to reassure her. "But humans want to save everyone. In this war, that's not going to happen." , "I tend to expect the worst, anyway." and "Before a certain turian with no romantic skills to speak of tries to cheer you up?"
He doesn't sugarcoat his thoughts, he doesn't downplay anything for her sake because he knows she needs someone to be that rock for her.
It goes both ways as well, especially if you view the outcomes of Garrus' loyalty as Shepard acting on behalf of what Garrus will need vs what he wants if you talk him down from taking the shot. Shepard knows that Garrus is standing on a thin line between getting justice for his team or acting out of revenge. She knows that shooting sidonis won't undo the hurt and will just be another body piled on top of it all, this time the blood actually being on his hands.
Or, if you prefer the renegade path, Shepard knows that Garrus needs to take out the final thing keeping him tied to Omega. That Garrus needs his team to be avenged so that he can stop carrying those souls with him and finally put them to rest.
It's such a brief discussion, but after recruiting him in me3, shepard is also very quick to ask about his family and then reassure him that they will be okay. After everything they have been through (not even just with the reapers) and all the losses they have collectively endured, she still doesn't hesitate to comfort him when it comes to his family.
I just love these two and their relationship so much

shakarian nation, could i perhaps interest you maybe in checking out my one turian kind of woman playlist which i literally cannot stop listening to on loop for the past year?
it is for now my only humble silly offering to this fandom, and i feel like i need to somehow express my gratitude for all those wonderful fanworks i consume daily that keep me afloat
i swear y'all just unceasingly reinforce my confidence that nothing will ever be able to top those two for me, as if the game itself hasn't done the job enough
but that's okay, i refuse to be normal about them anyway
so if you could give it a try that would mean a whole great lot to me

“ when you love something, you protect it. ” for mass effect please! Any character is fine ^^
You've opened the floodgates for this one- there are so many opinions I didn't know what to settle on. A little bit of Legion never hurt anyone though.
A small hiss of pain escapes Commander Shepard as a vibrant flash of red slices across their shoulder. The wound was minor on its own, something that the reinstated Spectre could have walked off if not for the many other hits that they took battling their way up to the ground station.
"We need medigel here!" Liara called out, the dread and worry in her eyes a rock sinking to the bottom of the Commander's stomach.
They were probably low on supplies as is.
If they even had any left.
But they worked with whatever they had- scrounging scraps of medigel amongst the team, the Shadow Broker provided some first aid to Shepard while Legion and Garrus gave the two much-needed cover fire.
It'd buy them time, though not nearly enough for them to catch their breaths.
"C'mon! This way!" Garrus yelled, helping the Commander up onto their feet before the squad ran for the makeshift cover-up ahead.
"The jammer is just up ahead," Dr. T'soni reminded the group- most likely a haphazard attempt at bringing up the morale- to remind everyone that the target was near, but one that worked well enough considering the circumstances.
A shot, then the sound of a hard thud as another collector behind them dropped to the ground.
"Affirmative," Legion popped the heat sink on their rifle, optic keeping on the path behind them clear as the team approached the summit of the cliffs.
They were never the talkative type, but the attempt at a response was reassuring to the doctor- and to the Commander as well.
They'd make out of this planet, easy.
All they needed to do was strap the explosives on the towers and blow the place to kingdom come. That, and dealing with the small army of collectors swarming their backside all the way back to the rendevous point in the clearing below.
Like they said.
Easy.
Having clawed their way past the last units of resistance up ahead, Shepard pulled out a pack of explosives and tossed it to Legion- deciding it best to let the AI set up the charges while Liara and Garrus held back what forces they could.
Not five minutes later the Geth unit returned, taking down one or two of the husks with their sniper as a silent way of announcing their presence.
Just how many were left? Twenty? Thirty? In the haze of battle, it was a little hard to tell. A blur really.
"Shepard Commander, alternating position advised."
Agreed. They needed to get out of there, and fast.
"Cover us," The orders were swift, smooth off the tongue from years of experience in the field. "Liara, go! Clear the way forward." A short word of acknowledgment, the Shadowbroker nodding as she lead the way forward- pistol held high.
The journey down was easier- having to only worry about one side of the battle certainly had that effect.
Then there was a sharp flash of light- the familiar, hostile heat of a shot barreling past the Commander, past the Geth behind them.
And right into the jammer.
Run.
They grabbed Legion's arm, yanking them forward and towards the others further down the hill.
They needed to-
BOOM.
The sudden explosion rang through the Commander's ears, shockwaves sending them and their crew tumbling. There was a singing in the air, something whistling in the wind.
Move. Now- their body screamed at them- begged them, Shepard sucking in a breath of air knew they had little choice but to oblige their instinct for survival. Now wasn't the time to lose focus.
Getting onto their feet and off of Legion, Shepard turned- weapon drawn to the noise.
Then that all too familiar sear came at them with a vengeance.
The world seemed to stand still as they dropped their rifle, the clattering dull to their ears.
A shaky hand moved to their shoulder, feeling something wet- something warm.
The smell of metal hung heavy in the air.
Blood, there was blood.
Shit.
Shrapnel?
Falling onto their knees, the world turned hazy-the Commander fighting against the pain, fighting against the shock. And failing miserably as the sounds of their comrades died upon their deaf ears.
Their presence- silhouettes fading from consciousness as quickly as they had appeared in the corner of Shepard's vision.
But that was hours ago, Commander Shepard was now safely on the Normandy and receiving proper treatment. They'd survive to live another day, maybe even be able to tell the tale of their mission like it was nothing- like it was just another day in the life of Commander Shepard.
Still, there was something the Geth unit couldn't comprehend, couldn't understand about humans. About the Commander.
"Damn, did you come to check on me too? I said I'm fine," Shepard laughed, the attempt at dry humor lost on the unit standing in the medical bay.
"Negative," Legion responded simply, their plates shifting as the mobile platform got out of the entryway and made its way to their leader's side. "We were informed of your condition."
Curious.
"Is this a social visit then?" A hint of surprise in Shepard's voice was understandable since most of the crew kept to their own corners of the Normandy. So seeing someone away from their post was odd enough, but Legion of all people?
A small shift of their face plates again, Legion shaking their head slightly after a brief pause to gather the consensus. "Negative, this unit wishes to make an inquiry."
"Oh?" A small smile, "Inquire away,"
"Inquiry. Shepard Commander pulled us before the explosion. Why?" It made no sense to the Geth unit, and it certainly didn't make sense to many others who barely-viewed Geth as sentient life much less a life worth saving in the middle of battle.
And on top of that, if one were to compare the physiology of a human and a Geth unit- one was better designed and better optimized to take impact damage.
It simply made no sense.
But the answer was simple according to Shepard Commander, the human wrapping a small hand around Legion's- their voice firm and filled with resolve.
"When you love something, you protect it. Simple as that."
Was it that simple though?
Legion's processors ran at the speed of light itself, more questions, and more inquiries bubbling around in their collective minds.
But they relented, letting go of Shepard's hand and lowering their head slightly.
"Answer... noted."
