Vaisakhi Mela 2019
Vaisakhi is the biggest celebration in the Sikh calendar, it is an historical and religious Sikh festival. It is always celebrated on 13 or 14thApril every year. It commemorates the year in 1699 when Guru Gobind Singh a sikh leader and warrior formed a religious group called the khalsa.
Tumblr media
The Sikhs believed that Guru Gobind Singh gathered all sikh to the Indian city called the Anandpur Sahib, Punjab. Guru Gobind Singh asked the crowd “who is prepared to die for their faith” Five men out of the crowd stepped forward and were taken into a tent separetly. The Guru re-appeared with a blooded sword in his hand and the five men were beside the guru. Guru Gobind singh were so proud of them and he decided to call the five men “ Panj Pyare” which mean five loved ones, and this was the birth of khalsa.
Tumblr media
The event took place in Birmingham Handsworth park where two procession also known as the Nagar Kirtan took place- one from hockley, the other from smethick heading towards handsworth park. The procession is led by the “panj pyare” who are followed by the guru granth sahib, the holy sikh scripture which is placed on a float that is decorated with flowers. There were also elderly women singing sikh hyms to celebrate the joyful day and they were accommodated on a open truck.
Tumblr media
Atleast 100,000 people attended the event from different race, there was also a funfair for children, exhibtions, charity stand and food stalls. The food was also prepared by the sikh gudwaras across the black country called the langar. There was also a marquee tent in the middle of the part event for all the Sikhs to worship called the Darbar, that was open to all communities to visit and understand the Sikh faith. The marquee was decorated in night blue and white drapes, ahead was achient swords that were used by sikh warriors in the 1600s- one of them were Guru Gobind Singh Swords.
Tumblr media
On the other half of the Darbar Hal,  there were three men were singing hyms which is called the Sangat. There accompanied with three religious instrument, one is called the vaja which is a wind instrument and the second instrument is called the tabla which is similar to drums however they play the instrument by hands. Seasons change, a new year starts Across India this weekend diverse communities celebrated the arrival of the New Year. Traditionally celebrated on either the 13th or 14th April, the timing of the festival corresponds with the solar calendar and ancient harvest cycle. For me in Mumbai, it also feels like the summer has truly started.
Known under various monikers, festivities occur nationwide. For Sikhs Vaisakhi marks the birth of the Khalsa (1699), while in Bangladesh Pahela Baisakh is a national holiday and the first day of the Bengali calendar. In Kerala the holiday is called Vishu (meaning equality) and centres around Lord Vishnu. This is similar to the celebration of Puthandu in Tamil Nadu; in both states a tray filled with auspicious items (milk, sweets and fruits) is arranged and pujas held in front of them. For me, the weekend evokes memories of candy-floss and hot jalebis at the annual Vaisakhi melas in Birmingham. Us kids would race ahead to the noisy, bright and magpie enticing fairground rides waiting for us in the park. My grandparents in the mean time piously joined the crowds of devotees parading down Smethwick’s terraced streets, waving orange flags emblazoned with the khanda (sikh faith symbol).
This year, my first Vaisakhi in India and home of the bhangra music and sweet treats I revelled in as a child, I did nothing. Thoughts of joining the celebrations at the local gurudwara crossed my mind but a pervasive, childish shyness stopped me. What’s the fun on your own? Disappointed in myself as the day wound up, I lay in bed and resolved next year to seek out the simple pleasure of seasonal celebrations.

Dera Ghazi Khan
Tumblr media
Dera Ghazi Khan (Urdu: ڈيره غازي خان‎), abbreviated as D. G. Khan, is a city in the Punjab province of Pakistan. It is the 19th largest city of Pakistan by population.[5] It is the headquarters of the Dera Ghazi Khan District and Dera Ghazi Khan Division.
History
Foundation
Dera Ghazi Khan was founded in the end of 15th century and was named after Ghazi Khan Mirrani, son of Haji Khan Mirrani who was a powerful Baloch chieftain. 15 generations of Mirranis ruled the area.
Post Independence
After the success of the Pakistan Movement, which lead to the independence of Pakistan in 1947, the minority Hindus and Sikhs migrated to India while many Muslims refugees from India settled down in the Dera Ghazi Khan District. Many Hindus and Sikhs from Dera Ghazi Khan settled in Delhi found Derawal Nagar along with the migrants from Dera Ismail Khan.
Geography and Climate
Dera Ghazi Khan is located at 30’03” N and 70’38” E. The overall climate of the city is dry with little rainfall. The winter is mild, but it is very hot in summer. The average high temperature during summer is about 107 °F (42 °C), while during winter the average low is 40 °F (4 °C). The prevailing wind direction is North-South. Due to the barren mountains of Koh-Suleman (Sulaiman Mountains) and the sandy soil of the area, windstorms are common in the summer. During summer, the temperatures are generally amongst the highest in Pakistan. Fort Munro, located on the edge of Punjab Province, has relatively cooler weather. In winter, scattered snowfall has been reported.
Demographics
The majority of the population is poor but they have been ruled by the rich landlords and chiefs of Baloch tribes which played a significant role in the national and provincial politics. Some of these feudals use the title Sardar for themselves, including former President of Pakistan Farooq Leghari, Governors of Punjab Zulfiqar Ali Khosa, Sardar Akram Khan Malghani Sardar of the Malghani Balouch tribe and Latif Khosa, Chief Minister of Punjab Dost Muhammad Khosa, present Chief Secretary of Punjab, Nasir Mehmood Khosa, Former Inspector General Police of Punjab, Tariq Khosa, and present Supreme Court Judge Asif Khosa. The city is one of the oldest districts in South Asia. Dera Ghazi Khan did not develop like other cities in Punjab. Based on the surveys of 2004–2005, Dera Ghazi Khan district is considered as one of the twenty poorest districts of Pakistan with about 51% of its population living below the poverty line.
Transport
Air
Dera Ghazi Khan International Airport is 15 km (9.3 mi) from the city centre of Dera Ghazi Khan. It caters mainly to the population of Dera Ghazi Khan.
Culture
Fairs and festivals
Sangh Mela, is a Vaisakhi fair during March and April, and has been celebrated in Sakhi Sarwar by people coming from Jhang and Faisalabad for centuries. This festival is celebrated by Hindus and Muslims, especially at the time of wheat harvesting. In some places it is known as Basant. Throughout history, a large number of followers coming from different religions became the followers of Sakhi Sarwar. Max Arthur Macauliffe, a colonial office appointed in Punjab, observed in 1875 that not only Muslims but Hindus also visited the shrines during the [urs]. In the 1911 census of India, 79,085 Sikhs reported to be followers of Sakhi Sarwar.
Cuisine
Sohan Halwa is a traditional sweet made by boiling a mixture of water, sugar, milk and wheatflour (coarse pieces)/cornflour until it becomes solid.
