Cesarean Birth is Birth
by Kira
While April is Cesarean Awareness Month, we need more than a month a year to celebrate the beauty and magic that is cesarean birth.
There is constant downplaying of the miracle of cesarean birth. Facebook statuses announcing births via cesarean say things like “Alex laboured so hard for 24 hours but eventually, had to have a c-section” or “Kay stubbornly didn’t want to come out, so we had to have a cesarean. Baby’s okay and mama is okay. Thank you for all the warm wishes.”
We had to have. No wonder there is a stigma surrounding Cesarean birth when language consistently minimizes the strength and energy that goes into a Cesarean birth. It frames a cesarean birth as something that happens to an individual, rather something that they actively participate in.
Gentle disclaimer before I move on: I’m not saying that every baby should be born via cesarean, or that it is a better way to birth. I am saying that we need to reframe how we talk about cesarean births.
Cesarean birth is not a failure. It does not make you a failure. It does not mean that you did not try, that you are any less of a parent, or that you are not going to be able to breastfeed or bond with your baby.
You are allowed to and should grieve the birth that you had planned for and let yourself feel that loss.
And then remember. Cesarean birth is birth. It is a beautiful and powerful way to bring a baby into the world.
As a doula, I suggest emotionally preparing for all types of birth, in case your birth does not go as you imagined it. Get informed. Learn about cesarean birth. Ask your care provider about the hospital’s policies.
Check out the Family Centered Cesarean website. Look into the clear drape and vaginal seeding.
And finally, think about recovery time and support. Recovery time for a cesarean birth (for any kind of birth, really) varies considerably, but it’s fair to expect a few weeks of limited mobility, staying in bed and not being able to lift things. Consider having a conversations with the friends and family that are planning to support you after the birth about what would happen if you had a cesarean birth.
And finally, remember. Cesarean birth is birth.

C-section Vaginal Seeding
Hello, I was wondering if there are any Spanish speaking moms here who have had a C-section and did vaginal seeding or a mom to be who is considering doing vaginal seeding.
