Varjoissa vaeltaja - Finland

I also just remembered the Finnish version of the Aragorn poem and it’s... well it annoys me a bit.

The Finnish edition had a different translator specifically for the poems, Panu Pekkanen, while everything else was translated by Kersti Juva and Eila Pennanen. Which sounds like a decent decision: make sure that the poetry gets the attention it deserves. But I get the sense that Pekkanen was probably focusing more on making the poetry sound good in Finnish than making sure the meaning behind it came across properly.

So this is how it goes in Finnish:

Ei kaikki kiiltävä kultaa lie,

vaeltaja ei eksy jokainen,

ei vahvalta vanhuus voimia vie,

syviin juuriin ei ulotu pakkanen.

Tuli tuhkasta jälleen pilkahtaa,

valo varjoista syttyvä on;

terä miekan murtunut yhteen saa,

ja kruunataan kruunuton. 

Most of this is great actually, it sounds good and it captures the essense of the original... but the first line translates to “all that glitters may not be gold”, which is just the opposite of Strider who does not glitter but is gold (metaphorically). The direct translation of the original line would be “kaikki mikä on kultaa ei kiillä“ or more fluently “ei kaikki kultainen kiillä”, although that obviously doesn’t fit the meter or the rhyme scheme. You could go with ei kaikki kulta kiiltävää lie, which sounds a bit clunky but I guess it works as the counter to the idiom, which is known in Finland too. I think people would catch that it’s an inversion.

I also don’t like vaeltaja ei eksy jokainen (roughly: “not all wanderers get lost”), for one thing I think it should be ei vaeltaja eksy jokainen, which is just a change in word order but it sounds so much better and matches better with the first line. Also I feel like the verb vaeltaa in Finnish does not have the same connotations as the verb wander in English. I do like how they sort of sound similar, it’s very satisfying, but vaeltaa is much more like “roam“ or “hike“. It doesn’t really have the connotation of straying from your course? at least not in my mind.

And especially so in this case with the derived term vaeltaja, as the agent noun, in particular. Like why are you telling me not all hikers get lost, I never assumed they would! I assume most of them probably know what they’re doing!

I mean I’m exaggerating a bit, you could interpret vaeltaa as having somewhat of a sense of meandering or something like that, and you can say anna mielesi vaeltaa to mean "let your mind wander" and you CAN translate vaeltaja as “wanderer”, but still. When I hear vaeltaja, the first impression I have is closer to “hiker”. For wandering without quite knowing where you are or where you’re going I would use harhailla, but that doesn’t work for Strider. Vaeltaja IS the right word for Strider, it just doesn’t have as much ambiguity as wanderer so the wordplay doesn’t quite work.

That said I don’t know if there’s a better way to translate that one. Maybe something more like “ei erämaassa eksy jokainen“ which would be like “not everyone gets lost in the wilderness“. idk. It has alliteration at least!

Those match nicely, both have triple alliteration and both start with ei. It appeals to me.

But I would be fine with ei vaeltaja eksy jokainen too, it’s close enough. Just change the word order, please. It makes so much sense that I always say it that way by accident anyway, whenever I try to recite the poem.

WIP Intro: Their Illuminating Voices

Excerpt

The last thing Ava heard as she began to lose consciousness was Michael shouting her name, the sound echoing as she slipped into darkness.

She woke up to the white room and the bright fluorescent light, and for a moment she thought she was in the hospital, a sense of relief washing over her at the idea of being somewhere safe. The feeling was short-lived as the memories of the day came back to her, dread settling in the pit of her stomach as she remembered where she really was.

Synopsis: A young woman, Ava, discovers her family might be part of a prophecy, and learns that she's being targeted by a ruthless intergalactic dictator, known only as the Woman, who doesn't want that prophecy to come true. After undergoing a serious trauma that reawakens old wounds, she must learn how to readjust to her marital and family life, and cope with the stress of a rewarding but dangerous job, all while trying to figure out a way to stop the Woman and keep herself and her family safe.

POV Characters

Ava Lorien: A 23-year-old mixed-race woman who is trying desperately to protect her family from a merciless dictator, while learning how to process the difficult emotions stirred up by a recent traumatic experience. She works for an organization called the Intergalactic Association for Peace and Protection (IAPP) that is attempting to end oppression across the galaxies. She is also newly married and struggling to deal with the changes that has created in her family life. 

Michael: A 305-year-old humanoid alien from a planet called Vaeltaja, and Ava's husband. Like Ava, he is trying to protect his family from the Woman, but he also wants revenge. The Woman was responsible for the near extinction of his species, including the deaths of many of his closest loved ones. He works with Ava at IAPP. He struggles to be supportive of Ava after her recent trauma because of how much it reminds him of his own painful past. 

Tess: A 47-year-old South Asian woman and mother to Ava and Ava's two sisters. Her husband, Jack, died nine years ago, and she still hasn't dealt with her grief. She overworks herself to avoid her emotions, and now must face the fact that she has unintentionally neglected her daughters. She struggles to help Ava process her trauma, while also coping with the new struggles of her other daughters as they deal with Ava's reduced presence in their lives and discover a long-held family secret. 

Athena: A 321-year-old Vaeltaja woman and Michael's sister. She practically raised Michael due to their largely absent parents and is Michael and Ava's boss at IAPP. She works very hard at her job, while also working on taking down the Woman to avenge her lost loved ones and protect the only family she has left. 

Dani: A seventeen-year-old mixed-race girl and Ava's sister. She has a very difficult relationship with her mother, while idolizing her late father, and keeping her sisters at a distance. The tension only grows as she discovers that her mother has been keeping a secret about her father from her for her whole life, and she decides she's willing to do anything to learn more about her father's past.

Hiya All

Thank you to the wonderful people who helped out with the last money situation. Right now I'm not actually in the negative, which is happily weird, though I am sure when I get my laptop back that will change, as my laptop is currently in the shop, so I am using my old one, which doesn't work that well cause age but hey!

I've been in a lot of pain and exhausted more often then not.

Also having a depressive flare up, that's not helped matters much.

One advantage of being on my old laptop is I have gotten some writing done, so when I get my other laptop back, and the art already done for it available, I'll be doing some posting. A'course, working on some of those WIPs has me moping about the lack of comments recently. I know that over all they shouldn't be that big a deal, and last week I got a lovely one on Different Paths, but sometimes I just wish that I'd get random ones occasionally on the older stuff.

I originally started this update on 8/25/2021 but ended up passing out, and then getting easily distracted between pain flares.

Hopefully I will get my laptop back tomorrow, would have had it back on Tuesday, but luck wasn't with me, and the repairman accidentally got the wrong battery to replace my fried one.

I can't remember if I managed to pay last months electric or not, I know that I have got my internet paid up.
