Travis Miles x Vadim Bobrov Fic (preview)

Vadim stood, telling one of his favorite stories to some travelers. This one was the story about the mirelurk. Although, the story has changed dramatically the more Vadim tells it. Travis heard the story originally. Vadim was walking past a body of water and out came a mirelurk. It came scuttering out towards him, to which he shot its head off and it slunked back into the water and drifted off. Nowadays, the story changes in detail depending on how many people are listening, and how drunk they are. In today's special version of the story, he apparently fought two mirelurk hunters with a bottle of Bobrovs best on one hand, and a fist in the other. Sure, it’s fake as all hell, but Vadims raw charisma and passion behind his words made the story real in it’s own sense. Travis watched just barely out of sight. Vadim flew his arms into the air roaring as apparently another mirelurk jumped out of the water, this one was the mighty king. A few drunk customers laughed and screamed as Vadim described the ugly mandibles and bulging eyes. Most of all, he made an effort to describe the slobber dripping down the beast's chin. Travis silently grinned to his ears as he listened. 

“And so there I was, da’ bodies of the other sea monsters at my feet, and the mighty king coming straight for my face,” Vadim punched out the words ‘mighty’ and ‘face’ from his chest. His voice boomed above the rest. It was the loudest sound in the bar. An absolutely hammered guy, leaning hard to the right exclaimed, “what happened?”

“I tell you, friend. I stood, a little scared but not too scared. I back up and pull out my-” as Vadim spoke the sentence, he glanced over and caught a glimpse of Travis standing there. He had to do a double take, making sure he saw the radio boy. “Travis!!”

The story immediately ended. Vadims smile took over his entire face as he stomped over to the scrawny guy. Travis looked down bashfully, but a small grin never left his lips. Drunk folks at the bar called back for Vadim, but he paid them no mind. Vadims arms were outstretched as he closed the distance between them. He immediately took Travis’ face in his hands, playfully shaking him with a warm look in his eyes. 

“Travis my boy! Good to see you!”

“Hi,” Travis muttered just loud enough to be heard. Vadim took him into his arms, giving him a large bear hug. Travis just about melted in the embrace. Unfortunately it ended fast. Vadim gave him a quick pat on the cheek before holding his shoulders firmly. 

“What are you doing here my lyubimyy tovarisch?” 

“I came to say hi… is that okay?”

“Yes! Yes! Of course!” He practically shouted. Normally loud voices bother Travis, but the Bobrov brothers were the exception. Vadim turned his head to the side and shouted, “brother! Travis is here!”

Faintly, Yefims voice could be heard exclaiming Travis’ name. It took him a moment to walk out of the hallway, with all the people and all, but after a few seconds he came around the corner and saw the two of them. A soft smile crossed his lips and he leaned against the wall. Arms crossed, he nodded towards the two of them. He casually shouted over the rest of the voices “good to see you Travis. I didn’t expect to see you today.”

“Me neither,” Vadim chimed in and wrapped an arm around Travis’ scrawny shoulders.

Fallout 4; Taking care of a Teen!Asian!Sole

Travis Miles

He felt like he needed to be a good influence to you, even though he's not older than you by a lot. Around you he grows a bit of a backbone. In the Doug-out he interrupts your conversation with Vadim to take away your shot and yell at him. Only to realize Vadim didn't realize you were a kid and unintentionally pressured you into having one.

In his quest he protected you during the fight and didn't want you to go to save Vadim, but he also knew he couldn't stop you. He didn't want to see you hurt due to something that was technically his fault. Actually punches Vadim before hugging him, calling him stupid for involving himself with raiders.

You would think he would be like an older brother but the role he takes in your life is akin to a father figure. Before you leave Diamond city he checks if you have the supplies to get across the Commonwealth. When you are there he takes you to get noodles, he'll listen to your adventures while eating. You are always welcomed to stay at his house if you don't want to stay at the Doug-out. He's always there to be your rock to lean on or even just to reminisce about life before the war.

Overall, Travis doesn't treat your race as anything because it is very far into the apocalypse, the concepts of race is almost nonexistent. To him you just have features he's seen from a few other people.

Nick Valentine

He remembers before the war, that includes all the Asian hate. Luckily for you, he never believed in calling random citizens 'commie bastards' in fact he's sympathetic. The only real difference in how he treats you is he'll ask about the culture because he knows a very limited amount.

Does help you with the main quest but low-key doesn't give you an option to dismiss him. He hates that a kid was put through this and is subjected to the woes of the Commonwealth. But at the same time he doesn't want to stop you. Productivity is a way of grieving, you lost both your parents, your little brother got kidnapped, and the world ended as you knew it. It wouldn't be right for him to tell you to let it go.

Actually closes the Agency for a while to travel with you. Not that he doesn't trust you, of course not, he doesn't trust everyone else. This is the Commonwealth, land of 'get mauled by a radiated bear' and home of the 'I'll kill you for a fancy-lad'. The world's not in the best place for someone who's not equipped.

Deacon

When Des recruited you he thought she was joking and was really surprised when she put you to the test with him supervising. After the mission he knew you could handle yourself but talking to you made him realize the gravity of you being a kid, and it hit him like a bus. He yelled at Des, away from everyone of course but she was less than pleased. The Railroad couldn't afford to be picky, he knew that, but using a kid who wanted to find their baby brother was a new all time low.

He jokingly asked if you were a spy before the war and immediately regretted it. The look of pure shame on your face was unforgettable to him. He apologized real fast. You forgave him but he beat himself up about it for the next week.

He didn't want to get attached to you, he didn't want you to get attached to him. But he did and you did. Not from a lack of trying. He did the whole 'you can't trust everyone' shtick but you just kinda stuck with him. To be fair, what teenager wouldn't find him cool as hell? Dude Agent 47 his way through the Commonwealth.

The one bonus of their disastrous last attempt to get to the Gunners was that it’d given them a chance to properly plan this time.  Ivy and MacCready spent a week holed up in a room at the Dugout waiting for her ankle to heal.  She’d had to promise Dr Sun that she’d stay off it for at least that long if she didn’t want to cause herself any lasting damage - though it was hard to be sure whether that was from the sprain or as a consequence of disregarding doctor’s orders.  

To her surprise, Mac had been a star about it all.  Even though this definitely wasn’t what he’d signed himself up for when she’d wandered into the Third Rail looking for shelter from the rain and the super mutants, and wandered back out, half-cut with a mercenary she wasn’t quite sure what to do with.  

He seemed to have taken Dr Sun’s words to heart, scolding her any time she tried to move somewhere other than the bathroom.  Not that he’d been sat around all week.  In the times he’d left her to their dingy rented room, with nothing but a disconcertingly confident Travis ringing tinnily from her pipboy speakers, he’d been busy.  

They were fully restocked with ammo and supplies.  The only thing he hadn’t picked up yet was stimpaks - if either of them could get more caps out of Solomon for their Forest Grove damages, it was Ivy.  He even patiently (well, as patiently as he could manage) endured Vadim’s unsubtle insinuations every time he returned to the room.  More than once Ivy had heard the barman heartily laughing “Do you need drinks?  It’s important to stay hydrated, tovarisch” before MacCready had a chance to slam the door - grumbling to himself and pulling his hat down low to hide his obviously flushed cheeks.  

But his crowning achievement was acquiring an old map that covered the area around the interchange.  He danced around telling her how he’d come across it, but he’d disappeared for pretty much a whole day, coming back looking exhausted and battered, with the proudest grin plastered across his face.  She suspected he’d snuck back to the library.  

If she thought too hard about him facing down super mutants on his own she broke out in a cold sweat, so instead she focussed on looking as impressed as he obviously wanted her to.  

The extra time in Diamond City had been a blessing in disguise.  By the end of the week, when Ivy was up and about again, she’d managed to get her hands on the right kind of “junk”, as Mac called it, to make a suppressor for her rifle.  She’d offered it to him first, but he’d insisted “I’d rather have them coming after me and leave you to pick them off in peace, angel.”

That damn nickname.  He was never going to let it drop.  There it was, any time he thought she was being too good, or whenever he found an excuse to smirk at her and say “Aren’t you worried you’re going to tarnish that halo.”

2011-ben az egyik első Recorder magazinban összeállítottam és megírtunk egy húszas listát a húsz évvel korábbi, 1991-es legjobb albumokról, a dologból hagyomány lett. A listák 1992-től közösen készültek az aktuális stábbal, 1998-at tekintettük át így utoljára a Recorderben. A sorozatot a távozásom után is folytatni akartuk, legalább a kilencvenes évtizedre húsz évvel visszatekintő sort lezárni 1999-cel, ami – néhány hónap meg nem feszített munkája után – íme, itten.

Tíz barátom, Csada Gergely, Elekes Roland, Fábián Titusz, Forrai Krisztián, Lékó Tamás, Németh Róbert, Salamon Csaba, Szabó Benedek, Szabó Csaba, Varga Zsófia szállt be a listába rajtam kívül. A végeredmény egyfajta keresztmetszet arra, hogy mi is volt húsz éve (sok más, főleg önmagukban álló albumcsodák mellett: a Dre-Timbaland-Neptunes triász megalapozta a 2000-es évek pop- és hiphop-hangzását, a posztbritpop-melankólia megágyazott a még retrósabb rockreneszánszoknak, az albumképes elektronika pedig csúcson volt), egy ajánlat arra, hogy miért is érdemes ápolni a kapcsolatot a nemfriss zenékkel. Persze az egyéni listákért talán még inkább érdemes lentebb görgetni, sokat mondanak arról, hogy mennyifélék vagyunk, hogy mennyiféleségben tudunk egyfelé húzni, hogy mennyi, hatását hosszan őrző zene van a világban. Jó szemezgetést, nosztalgiázást, ismerkedést, boldog zenehallgatást minden nyitott fülnek 2020-ban is!

It had started with Madelyn declaring that she was bored. Herand Deacon had hunkered down for the evening in Diamond City, waiting out theradstorm in some dark corner of the Dugout Inn. Somewhere between the cheapbeer, Vadim’s nonsensical tales and Travis’ ramblings floating from the nearbyradio, she decided she needed a better distraction.

Deacon’s imagination led to the two participating in trustexercises. At first, Madelyn assumed it would mean she would be fallingbackwards into his arms (or worse, all six-feet-two of him into her tinierframe). Her partner had a different idea.

He leaned over the tiny table they occupied, mouth goingcompletely askew in a shit-eating grin. “A staring contest!”

“I’m not sure what that has to do with trust,” shedoubtfully replied.

“We need to learn each other’s cues, each other’s subtleties—it’sall in a look, in the eyes,” he paused. “Imagine that I ran into you here andneeded to convey a secret message, just by staring you down. Would you know howto reply? Didn’t they write about this in pre-war books?”

Madelyn knew there was some truth to what Deacon wassaying (and yes, there were so many books on psychology that shehad skimmed through in pre-law)—but she wasn’t about to satisfy him that easily.“All this theoretical talk for someone who wears reflective sunglasses, evenwhen it’s pitch-black outside.”  

He puffed his lips, waving his hand dismissively. “You haveto learn to look past the lenses.”

It all sounded like some ancient guarded secret better foundin a mystery novel, but again—Madelyn was bored—she was better offhumoring Deacon. Finally, she nodded at him, scooting the empty bottle beerbottles to edge of the table.

“Rules?”

“First person to blink loses.”

She frowned. “And how do I know you won’t cheat?”

Deacon leaned over the table in preparation with a smirk. “You’lljust have to trust me.”

With a sigh, Madelyn copied his stance, crossing her armsover the small space, finding herself closer to his face so their eyes werelevel. Within thirty seconds her eyes started to strain but she stayeddetermined, not wanting to give Deacon the gratification of a win, especiallywhen the odds had been stacked in his favor. As they—she—continued tostare him down, they leaned closer and closer over the table until eventuallytheir foreheads were lightly pressed together. Madelyn widened her eyes alittle to keep them focused as she waggled her nose—a distraction. Assoon as she felt Deacon’s subtle flinch, she was beaming.

“Ah!” she exclaimed. “You blinked!”

He whined as he pulled away, snapping his fingers in mock disappointment.“You got me.”

“We never discussed compensation,” she noted, tapping thetable.

“Tell me what you want,” he smiled, knowing his usual line typicallydid the trick of making her blush. Though, this time, she was more thanprepared. She tilted her head in the direction of the front door.

“Weather sounds like it’s clearing up,” she paused so Deaconcould turn to take a listen. “Why don’t you buy us a couple of swatters fromMoe and I’ll teach you how they played in 2077.”

That suggestion jumpstarted his expression. “Oh, Charmer—you’reon!”

Onward to the Q&A!

What is your name? “My full name is Osa Claire Lockhart. Everybody calls me Claire. Sometimes General, or Bullseye. But usually, it’s just Claire.”

How old are you? “Oh, um, do you want my literal age? I don’t like counting the 210 years I spent frozen inside a cryopod, so let’s just say I’m 33.”

What do you look like? “I’m a short gal with long -- longish? yeah, longish -- red hair, blue eyes, and some freckles around my nose and cheeks. And I guess I’m brawny for a woman. Working out helps me keep a clear head. And, you know, alive. But let me tell you: you can have as many muscles as my hubby and you can still end up with a Deathclaw’s claw marks on your cheek. Which... I did. In my defense, the power armor I wore was fitted for some tall dude and it was the first time I’d ever seen one of them beasts.” 

Where are you from? Where do you live now? “I’m from a very small town in Texas called Blue Fields, named after all the bluebonnets that used to grow there. When I turned 18, I joined the army. I was stationed in the Yukon for a while, then Anchorage, Alaska... and then, when I was discharged, I moved back home. Graduated from Texas A&M, then moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts when I was accepted into Harvard Law School. When I got married, I moved to Sanctuary Hills. Nowadays, I live in Diamond City in the Commonwealth... Wow, I’ve lived in a lot of places.” 

What was your childhood like? “It... wasn’t that great, but Mom tried to give me and my brothers as many good memories as she could.”

What groups are your friendly with? Are you allied with any factions? “I’m the General of the Minutemen. I can be friendly with any group that wants to help the people of the Commonwealth. And ‘people’ includes humans, synths, and ghouls.”

Tell me about your best friend. “My best friend? Well... I assume you mean my best friend outside of any family members. That would be Preston. I don’t know what would’ve happened to me if he hadn’t asked me to join the Minutemen. Because I, um, don’t do well alone, and I was in a dark... very dark place when I left the vault. Helping Preston and the Quincy survivors gave me a purpose. One other than revenge. And I... don’t think I’ll ever be able to repay him.”

Do you have a family? Tell me about them! “Growing up, my family was my mom and dad, my older brother, my younger brother, and our abuela. I got married after graduating law school, and Nate and I had a baby boy we named Sean. Almost all of them are gone now, obviously.”

What about a partner or partners? “Danse and I got married a few months ago. He used to be a Brotherhood of Steel paladin but that’s a whole other can of worms. He’s still my hero in power armor, though.”

Who are your enemies and why? “Um... There are groups in the Commonwealth that I dislike and the Institute has been destroyed for months now. But enemies? Not at the moment. Some people see me as the enemy. Lot of Institute refugees won’t accept any help from me or the Minutemen. Can’t really blame them.”

Have you ever heard of the Brotherhood of Steel? What do you think about them? “Oh, I’ve heard of them. I’m still grateful for their help. I’m still good friends with Scribe Haylen, and I guess Knight Rhys, too. But let me just say Elder Maxson and I are currently not on speaking terms.” 

What about the Enclave? “Everything I know about the Enclave are things Danse and Deacon have told me. Apparently, they’re the remnants of the United States’ government. I bet they were all the cowards who sent us soldiers to fight the wars they made.”

How do you feel about Super Mutants? “I listened to some of the holotapes I found in the old Robotics lab...” Claire physically shivers. “All the people they kidnapped, they turned them into super mutants and released them into the Commonwealth. It’s awful. But when one of ‘em attacks you, you don’t have the luxury to feel guilty.”

What’s the craziest fight you’ve ever been in? “Oh God, you’d think it’d be the time I met Cait and fought her in the Combat Zone. But no. It’s got to be that ‘fake’ fight that was meant to give Travis some confidence. I might have broken one of them goon’s nose, and then Vadim refused to pay him and his partner. Don’t tell Vadim I said this but he kinda deserved to be kidnapped.”

Have you ever fought Deathclaw? “Yeah, that’s how I got the pretty scars on my cheek.”

Do you like fighting? “I don’t like fighting but it’s unavoidable in the wasteland.”

What’s your weapon of choice? “A tried and true 10mm pistol and the laser rifle Danse gave me. But if I need something with a bit of oomph, I’ll use a gauss rifle. That thing saved my ass when the Institute attacked the Castle.”

How do you survive? Your wits, your charm, your skills, brute force, or some combination? (a.k.a. what’s your S.P.E.C.I.A.L.?) “I’m a medal-winning sharpshooter -- not that I’m bragging -- I can ran faster than most raiders, and... I listen to people. You might not think being a good listener will help you survive the Commonwealth but people want to be heard. That hasn’t changed in over 200 years.”

Have you ever been in a vault? What do you think about them? “... Yes. I’ve been in a vault. I’m alive because of a vault. I’d rather stay away from most of them, though.”

How do you beat all the radiation around here? Has it affected you? “Well, I haven’t turned into a ghoul, so that’s something. I take a Rad-X every morning and seek shelter whenever a radstorm rolls through. That’s about all anyone can do.”

What’s your favorite wasteland critter? “Probably the radchickens and the brahmin.”

What’s your least favorite wasteland critter? “Mole rats. I don’t care if Deacon thinks they’re so ugly they’re cute, they JUMP out from the underGROUND.”

How do you feel about robots? “Codsworth waited for over 200 years for someone -- anyone -- from my family to leave the vault and find him. Most robots are built to perform one task and they do it well, but Codsworth? He’s irreplaceable.”

How many caps do you have on you right now? “Answering that question is a great way to get robbed.”

Nuka Cola or Sunset Sarsaparilla? “Both drinks were widely available in Texas but I’ve always been a Nuka Cola girl. My favorite flavor Nuka Victory but stores in the northeast only ever sold it during the summer. Unless you went to Nuka World.”

Do you do chems? “No. I remember when in Anchorage our superior officers would overlook any psycho and jet use, but I never touched it. Too worried I’d end up like my dad and my older brother.”

Do you ever think about the pre-war world? “Not as much as I did when I left the vault. I still miss it sometimes.”

What’s your deepest regret? What would you do differently? “... I don’t think I can talk about that right now.”

What’s your biggest achievement? Or what do you hope to achieve? “I used to think my biggest achievement was becoming a lawyer but everything paled in comparison to becoming a mom. Wow, that sounds really cliche, doesn’t it?” Claire takes a deep breath to keep from crying. “I guess my deepest regret and my biggest achievement will always have Sean in common.”

What do you want for your future? For yourself? Your friends? The world? Claire takes a moment to answer. “I want to see the Commonwealth thrive. I want it to be a land for the people. I don’t know how we’re going to do it, but if the West has the NCR, I don’t see why the East can’t have the Commonwealth.”

"Verdammnt schwein", Angela muttered under her breath as she stomped back to Publick Occurrences. Out of the corner of her eye, two Diamond City guards did their very best to look pre-occupied with anything but her. "Anything I can do to help, Doc?", Valentine asked. Angela frowned. "Short of a full epidemiological lab, I'm going to have to make do with field expedients and hope for the best. It doesn't help that the sanitation in Diamond City isn't a lot better than some of the junker slums." "Hmm", Valentine mused. "A full bug hunt lab, eh? Well, in the mean time, what do you need?" He opened the door to Piper's home and they stepped inside. Angela injected a measured dose of Med-X into Nat. "I need a dozen sterilized glass bottles, ten litres of purified water, half a kilo of salt, and two litres of pure alcohol. I've got almost everything else I need here." She sighed, her shoulders slumping. "Please tell Miss Wright, Piper, I will do my very best." Valentine was silent for a moment, his eyes flicking from Nat to Angela, then he smiled. "You know what, Angel? I think I'm gonna start believing in miracles." Nick turned to the door. "Look after the kid. I'll be right back." Angela nodded. - - - - - Nick Valentine almost swaggered as he returned to his office, he was feeling so good. Even the rain seemed delightful. While he had been gone, Ellie had managed to calm Piper down, getting her to drink some water. Piper was in one of the chairs his clients usually sat in, looking ashamed. "Nick, I wanna apologise. I made myself look like a total fool with Angela." He sank to one knee in front of her, his hand on her shoulder in understanding. "Don't sweat it, kid. Everyone is allowed to freak out once in a while. Nat's in good hands from what I can see. Angela seems to know her stuff." She could barely meet his honest gaze. "Do you have a place to crash? Angela said Nat might have a flu, so that could mean a quarantine. That is, if you don't come down with it too." Piper smiled wistfully. "Yeah. Blue gave me a spare key to his Outfeild trailer. I'm good." Nick patted her shoulder approvingly. "Good. Get some rest. And, speaking of our favorite pre-war relic, I have an errand to run." - - - - - Piper and Nick parted ways, Piper heading to the trailer, and Nick went to the Dugout Inn. "Valentine, you rusty bastard, no gunning down my customers like last time!", Vadim yelled as he entered. "Fine by me. I'll let the next wastelander who can't take a joke or hold their liquor shoot you", Nick replied calmly. Vadim mimed being shot in the heart. "You wound me! Ha!", he grinned. "So, ready to try my moonshine?" "Actually, your hooch is the reason I'm here. I'll take three gallons of the stuff." Vadim stared at Nick in disbelief. "Don't play vith me, Nicky. A joke is a joke, but Bobrov's Best is a matter of pride." Vadim waved a finger at the battered synth. "I'm dead serious, Vadim. Three gallons, and I need as many sterilized bottles as you have lying around. I also need a box of salt, and a case of purified water. Send the bill to my office, I'll pay you in the morning." "Jesus, Valentine, this must be a hell of a party you're planning." Vadim said. "I'll lug the hooch and water myself. Can you or Scarlet drop off the bottles and salt at Publick Occurrences? Just leave them at the office door.", Nick requested. "Piper? Is she alright?" Vadim paled at a thought as he hefted the gallon jugs onto the bar counter. "Not the leetle one, Nat?", he guessed. Nick nodded silently as be took the jugs. Vadim scowled. "I will bring everything else. Personally." "Will wonders never cease? Vadim, you've got a heart of gold." - - - - - The supplies delivered to Dr. Zeigler's capable hands, Nick made his way to Diamond City Radio. He knocked and let himself in. "This is Travis 'Lonely' Miles, and coming right up, the Three Suns and 'Worry Worry Worry'." The lanky DJ looked up as Nick entered, and paled slightly.
