Beltway Sniper Attacks
At 5:20 P.M on October 2, 2002, Ann Chapman was preparing for the end of the day at the hobby retailers in Aspen Hill, Maryland, at which she worked as a cashier. With no warning, the window of the shop suddenly cracked and she felt the wind of a high-velocity .223 rifle bullet crack past her head, so close that it touched her hair. She had just survived the first attempted killing by the individual who would become known as the Beltway Sniper (so called because he seemed to use the Washington Beltway road system to move between attacks), a person who for the next three weeks would terrorize the states of Washington D.C, Maryland, and Virginia. By October 24, 10 people were dead and three were seriously injured.
_______________________________________________
Lethal Accuracy
Within 45 minutes of the shooting at Aspen Hill, the Beltway Sniper took his second shot. This time his aim was perfect-a single bullet killed 55-year old James Martin as he walked across the parking lot of a Glenmont supermarket. These incidents in themselves warranted a major police investigation, but nothing prepared the local police for what would occur the following day, Thursday October 3. Between 7:41 A.M and 9:15 P.M, the faceless sniper shot dead another five people. What was apparent was that the selection of victims had a distinctly random quality about it. They included 39-year old James Buchanan, 34-year old housecleaner Sarah Ramos, and 72-year old father of five Pascal Charlot. All had been killed in open, public locations within reach of major roadways. By the end of the day, it was not only state and Federal law enforcement agencies that were bursting into action, but also a startled urban media. Panic rippled through the public, stirred even further by the shooting of a 43-year old mother of two, Caroline Seawell as she loaded up her minivan with goods outside a mall in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. She survived, but for the citizens using and living around the Washington Beltway, casual activities such as filling the car at the gas station or using a supermarket now seemed fraught with risk.
The main figurehead of the police investigation into the murders was the police chief of Montgomery County, Charles Moose. The Montgomery County police, however, provided the command center for a particularly wide investigation that involved agencies such as the Virginia Department of Transportation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tabacco, and Firearms (BATF) and the FBI. All pooled their forensic and investigatory resources in an attempt to find the killer before he struck again.
Timeline of a Murder
1: October 3, 2002. 8:46 A.M Sarah Ramos, a 34-year old Salvadorean immigrant of Silver Springs, Maryland, sits on a bench outside the Leisure World Shopping Centre in Aspen Hill. Ramos works several jobs, and is waiting for a bus to come and take her to another place of work.
2: John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo are parked nearby in their blue Chevrolet Caprice. They have already shot two people dead in the last hour, one at 7:41 A.M and the next at 8:12. They spot Ramos sat on the bench, reading to pass the time.
3: Muhammad moves into the rear of the car, lying flat on the specially designed luggage compartment. In the rear of the trunk, he has already drilled two holes-one for the muzzle of the weapon, and the other for the telescopic sight of the gun. He now takes aim at Ramos.
4: 8:47 A.M Muhammad fires a single shot. Witnesses at the scene recall hearing a crack, then seeing Ramos slump forward, with blood pouring from her head. The .223 bullet from Muhammad’s Bushmaster rifle destroys Ramos’ brain and skull, killing her instantly.
5: Muhammad and Malvo, having taken a young, promising and innocent life, pull away from the scene. They kill two more people that day alone. Initial 911 calls at the scene report that the women has shot herself. Only when police investigators arrive do they realize that she has been shot by a third party.
Tarot Card Killer
Unfortunately, for many days to come the Beltway Sniper seem to have the advantage. At 8:09 A.M on Monday October 7, shortly after Charles Moose had cautiously reassured the public that there was no reason to keep children off school, the sniper put a bullet through a 13-year-old Iran Brown outside Benjamin Tasker Middle School in Bowie, Maryland. Incredibly the boy survived, but for the police it was apparent that not only was the sniper feeding off the media coverage, but he was also a potential child killer. There was another alarming development - the Death card from a pack of Tarot Cards was found at the scene of the shooting inscribed with the words “Call me God.” In addition to the title Beltway Sniper, the shooter was now also labeled the “Tarot Card Killer.” Radio and TV broadcasts were now filled with experts, real and professed, who offered profiles of the killer and suggestions as to how the police could track him down. Yet despite hurling huge law enforcement resources at the ease, the sniper seemed to remain elusive.
Finding A Killer
Between the Iran Brown shooting and October 22, five more people were shot dead by the sniper, mostly in parking lots or gas stations around Virginia and Maryland. The killer was also becoming bolder, more tatunting. He started to leave messages and letters around the scenes of the shootings, boasting to the police about his impunity while also making blackmail demands for millions of dollars and threatening that “Your children are not safe, anywhere, at anytime.”Yet the sniper’s confidence would actually be his undoing. In a mocking phone call to Chief Moose’s office, the sniper mentioned his involvement in an armed robbery in Montgomery, Alabama, in September 2002, during which a liquor store clerk was shot dead. The FBI pulled details of the crime, and obtained fingerprints from a handgun magazine dropped near the scene of the crime. The FBI ran the fingerprints through their national database, and found that they belonged to 17-year old John Lee Malvo, a known associate of 41-year old ex-soldier John Allen Muhammad. Vehicle license checks revealed that Muhammad owned a blue Chevrolet Caprice that had been checked during random traffic stops around the areas of the shootings over the past few weeks. (For many days during the investigation, the police had been looking for a white box van believed to be associated with the shootings, although investigations into this vehicle proved to be a waste of time.) On October 24, around 3 A.M., the blue Caprice was spotted in a parking lot in Frederick, Maryland. Within minutes, police and FBI tactical units surrounded the vehicle and apprehended Malvo and Muhammad, who both gave themselves up with surprising compliance. Discovered in a bag in the car was Muhammad’s Bushmaster XM-15 .223 rifle, which forensics later linked to 11 of the 14 shootings. Further investigations revealed that the Caprice had been modified so that Muhammad could lay across the floor of the trunk and shoot through a small aperture drilled into the trunk itself, a modification that explained the inability of witnesses to provide sightings of the shooter.
Profiling
John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo were a curious pair. Muhammad was the sniper-he had served in the U.S Army for nine years, during which time he saw active service in the first Gulf War (1990-1) and became classified as an expert in M16 rifle marksmanship. (The Bushmaster XM-15 is a civilian/law enforcement version of the military M16.) Malvo seemed to have simply acted as his compliant sidekick. Muhammad was actually born John Williams, but later changed his surname to reflect on a conversion to Islam in the 1980s. His life up to the murders was a litany of emotional, marital and commercial failures. If we were to spot a final catalyst for killing spree, it may have been when his (second) ex-wife won full custody of their three children, with a restraining order placed upon Muhammad. Many people go through tough lives without resorting to serial murder. During the trial in 2003, the court found both men guilty, sentencing Malvo to life imprisonment without parole and Muhammad to death. Despite his appeals, Muhammad was executed by lethal injection on November 10, 2009.

System weaknesses - including the failure of some pumps and power-generating turbines - were exposed after an Aug. 5 deluge flooded homes and businesses in some sections of the city. New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said 109 of its 120 pumps are functioning, which is 92 percent capacity. Some 26 backup generators were in place. Efforts to clean thousands of street catch basins have been stepped up, with vacuum trucks dispatched to various areas to suck out thick mud and debris. Landrieu also said flood-prone underpasses would be blocked Saturday to keep motorists from driving into standing water. 'Right now this storm should not bring us anything that we're not prepared to handle,' Landrieu said Saturday. Forecaster said Nate could dump 3 to 6 inches (7 to 15 centimeters) of rain on the region - with isolated totals of up to 10 inches (25 centimeters). Storm surge was as big a worry as rain. As is often done during the approach of storms, the city ordered evacuation of some low-lying communities near the water and its levee system - an estimated 1,000 homes. And communities along the Gulf and near Lake Pontchartrain were looking at the possibility of storm surge flooding. In Mississippi, the state highway department said crews were lowering high masts that hold street lights along the coast to keep the lights from becoming projectiles in high winds. On Alabama's Dauphin Island - a barrier island south of Mobile, Alabama - owners hauled boats out of the water ahead of the storm's approach. The major concern was the storm surge was projected to coincide with high tide. Shelters were being open for coastal residents. 'The west end of the island floods in a good thunderstorm,' said Chad Palmer, the owner of FinAtics Inshor

In a Galaxy Not Too Far Away...
By Andrew Tobin
On June 29th, 2017, the House Armed Services Committee voted to create a new sixth branch of the military that would take on the Air Force’s duties protecting our satellites orbiting earth in addition to expanding the military’s control over not just our airspace, but our space-space. This proposed branch would be aptly named the Space Corps., and, according to one of the co-writers of the bill, Alabama Rep. Mike Rogers (R), the branch would be dedicated to addressing the “very real threats from China and Russia” in addition to providing readiness for the fact that “warfighting has become absolutely dependent on space.” As an average US citizen whose thoughts of war generally hover between “please no” and “this is too expensive”, the thought of involving our country in a lower tech and likely bloodier Star Wars scenario is worrisome, to say the least.
That’s not to say that this new stride towards space warfare is lacking a precedent. After all, were it not for our competitive relationship with Russia, NASA would not exist. In fact, almost all of our excursions into outer space have been fueled somewhat by an undercurrent of competition and suspicion, starting with the US taking note of the fact that Sputnik (the first satellite launched by Russia) was built around the body of an old, repurposed ballistic missile and creating an entirely new agency within the Executive Branch in response. According to the aforementioned Mike Rogers, this is simply more of the same competition with China and Russia that the US has been pumping money into since the beginning of the Cold War. My question is: is it actually the same conflict?
The US has always been on shaky terms with Russia, and has an even stranger relationship with China, as we just now begin to recognize them as a world power on par with our own. Russia has never truly abandoned their surveillance of the US (and vice versa), and recent allegations of espionage and electoral manipulation by Russian hackers shows how our world politics and methods of warfare change as constantly as our technology does. With terrifying ideas like space lasers and kinetic bombardment possibly entering reality in the near future, it’s not too hard to see our current state of uneasy peace with Russia and China escalating into another conflict on the level of the Cold War or worse. After all, nothing is colder than the vacuum of space.

the bachelor, season 21, episode 1: i most certainly am not here for the right reasons
I’m pretty sure I’ve never been so excited in my life for one thing.
I’m also pretty sure no one has worked harder to make one person happen than ABC did for Nick. They’re not claiming it’s “The Most Exciting Season Yet”, thank god - it’s “Unlike Anything You’ve Ever Seen Before”. God damn it, ABC. You are not clever.
Nick is uncomfortable saying he’s The Bachelor, and we get a full on montage of him half-naked and even FULL NAKED!!!! I still can’t decide if I think Nick is cute, and this will be my personal journey this year - Is Nick Hot, Or Is He A Body And Good Facial Hair? I just know that Nick has more personality in his pinky finger than Manila Envelope and Water-Based Oatmeal1 ever could. We get a montage of Nick’s terrible hair2 and terrible experiences on this franchise. He also talks with his hands in front of his mouth and has communication issues. Apparently, his family is thrilled with him being the Bachelor, which is hilarious because anyone else’s family would talk them out of doing this show for the FOURTH time. But instead his sister gives him some shitty advice about picking girls up in cars, and we get the obligatory Kiss From A Rose/I’m The Bachelor Now photoshoot montage. Nick’s gonna give us all happy endings, and my friend Katie is pumped.
Speaking of Manila Envelope and Water-Based Oatmeal, they join Sean Lowe, who’s season I’ve seen but barely remember except for Tierra the Tierrable for a chat about the fact that Nick is considered to be an asshole and make jokes that he’s done the show four times. I love that this is going to be A Thing this season. Nick’s afraid of failing on TV AGAIN and all of America is sadly rooting for this too. Not out of dislike for Nick, but wouldn’t it be interesting if SIX people rejected him? Manila Envelope or Water-Based Oatmeal (YMMV) manages to give Nick some good advice about not changing for the show ‘cause everyone’s gonna love him!
When I’m The First Black Bachelorette, my advice to the incumbent will be:
We’re greeted with the first shot of The Artist Formerly Known As My Mortal Enemy, Chris Harrison. Now that I’m enemies with James Kennedy, I had to replace Chris. He was super cool about it, though. He still knows what he did, though. Trust me. He knows what he did. He’s going to introduce us to our Final Four and Others! This is an actual trope of this show - the final four is always featured in the opening segment, along with the two or three others who are topics of discussion this season. You know you’re gonna get a good or bad edit depending whether or not you’re one of the Chosen Six.
WE MEET SOME OF THE LADIEZ!!!!!
Rachel, who I already decided will be Our Real First Black Bachelorette, is an attorney from Dallas. We get a montage of her vacuuming and dancing and talking about how she wants love, but doesn’t believe in love at first sight, but hopes to feel a connection straight off the bat. Rachel, at 31, is one of the oldest contestants this season, and I adore Rachel. Danielle is 27 and owns 3 nail salons. She’s kind of bland. Vanessa, who’s from Quebec3 and speaks English, Italian, and French, and is a special needs teacher. She’s more of a unicorn than Joelle on Ben’s season. She’s far too perfect and Ben is gonna love her. Jacqueline is a lonely nursing student who loves cats and talks to animals. It takes a “certain kind of guy” to handle Jacqueline, which means he’s going to hate her.
Raven reads her bible and watches football in Huxie, Alabama. She’s the second small business owner on the show, and... yeah, i got nothing for Raven. She’s another one who’s just there and probably makes it to the end as The Shocker. Corinne is glamorous and lives in Miami. She’s a 24-year-old woman with a fucking nanny who she needs to live. She runs a “multi-million dollar company” that he dad is passing over to her, and Corinne is this season’s villain and probably final four. Alexis is weird and embarrassing, Danielle is a nurse. GOD these women are... bland.
Taylor is a mental health professional and is fucking gorgeous. She psychoanalyzes Nick, which scares me, considering she’s never met him. Not a huge fan of armchair psychology, even though that is literally the basis of this blog. She talks about being biracial and I’m glad this is a discussion being had on this show. Colorism is so real and such a problem - most of mainstream America probably has zero clue about the internalized hatred within a lot of the black community when it comes down to the actual color of your skin. Liz and Nick fucked at Jade and Tanner’s wedding, where Liz was the maid of honor. They call it “hooking up” but they refuse to admit they bangalanged. Liz refused to give Nick her number after the torrid affair and regrets it because now he’s going to be rich, famous, and have over a million Instagram followers, the dream of every person who participates in his mess of a series.
Note: There has been almost a week between the above paragraph and the rest of this blog. Last week was crazy, sorry y’all. I’ll do better for you this season, I promise.
Anyway, we resume with the Meeting of The Women, also known as the Limo Introductions. Chris Harrison welcomes him back because this is the second time Nick’s doing this - how many times are we going to reference that this is Nick’s fourth go-around???? - and they talk about how Nick is controversial. Remember when Madonna kissed Britney Spears was controversial? Now, a former Salesforce representative-turned-model is “controversial”. Words mean nothing and I am losing more of myself every single day. Nick hopes to finally meet The One, because... that is literally the point of this show.
A GIF Interpretation of My Reaction To Meeting The Bachelor If I Were to Compete on This Show: 4
Danielle is the first from the limo, which combined with her opening segment places her heavily in the top 4. Elizabeth is 24, wearing white lace, and is nervous. She’s basically wearing a wedding dress, and that’s all I got from this. My Queen Rachel shows up, looking gorgeous in a red dress and a red lip, and then makes a football joke. RACHEL, YOU ARE THE BEST. I LOVE YOU. Christen does a fan dance, wears a yellow dress Reese Witherspoon5 is dying to wear to next year’s Golden Globes, and much like everyone else, is excited.
Taylor The Mental Health Professional is only 23?! She calls him a piece of shit (blaming her friends), which is... not the best note to start on and things get weird quick. Nick does not want to meet her friends. laughed so hard because as someone who has also insulted someone upon initial meeting, it’s all in your recovery, and Taylor The Mental Health Professional flubbed. Oh, Taylor. You probably will go home tonight. Kristina wants to get to know him for him, Angela is a model who’s there because El Bachelor is Nick and wears a two-piece gown. Lauren shows up in ALL SEQUINS and her last name is “Hussy”, and makes a solid “Viall-Hussy” joke. Lauren, I already like you. Who are you, Lauren? Can we be friends? I’m down with your sense of humor6.
I wonder how many times they’ll use the word “excited” tonight? Elizabeth wants to form her OWN opinions about him because she’s a Woman Who Does What She Wants. They all believe that Nick on Paradise is the real Nick, not the former Nick who was the asshole on The Bachelor. Ida Marie and Taylor show up, and Ida Marie does a trust fall with him - is this my middle school theatre camp? - and Olivia from Alaska gives him an Eskimo kiss, which feels... obtuse. Someone comes running in - Sarah - and makes a runner-up joke. I’d be pissed if I had to run in any kind of dress. I’d be pissed if I had to run, period. Jasmine G’s body is on point, she looks gorgeous in teal, and she brought Neil Lane with her. I guess Nick and Neil Lane will see each other FIVE TIMES over the course of this show. See? Even I can’t stop mentioning how many times Nick has been on this show. It’s all kind of pointless, and weird, and so is the following “I’m not wearing underwear” non-joke from Hailey, who is also 23. Some of the girls this season are showing their age early on, damn.
Astrid speaks German and gets hella sexy with Nick in a language he doesn’t understand. All the girls are trying to bang him already, damn. I love it. OH NO, LIZ HAS ARRIVED. I’M SCARED FOR HER ALREADY. Nick gives a stifled smile to her like he’s trying to place her - not a good sign, Liz The Doula - and doesn’t even acknowledge that the two of them know each other. HE HAS NO IDEA. I LOVE THIS PLOTLINE ALREADY. Nick “thinks he met her already” which is amazing because he’s literally not sure. Liz weirds me out - there’s a robotic thing about her that scares me. LizBot 2000 reminds me of a strange beauty pageant girl.
Corinne is here for Nick and gives him a hug token to cash in later. Corinne, I already dislike you. Vanessa speaks French to Nick, and I hate her dress. I really like her, though. Some girl brings maple syrup and my boyfriend went on a rant about bringing sticky brown water to a first date and I stopped paying attention to what was going on. Raven has a cute accent, and Jaimi is the second person in the culinary arts this season. Jaimi has “balls” as in she has a septum piercing? WHAT? HOW IS THIS A THING? There’s so much wrong about that. There are a few more introductions I pretty much ran through - Savannah, Josephine (who gives him a book with a hot dog in it?). Lacey arrives on a camel and makes a hump joke, and the girls can’t get over that they didn’t come up with that concept. It is a really good one. Alexis is an aspiring dolphin Trainer and wears a shark suit7, but considers herself to be a dolphin. Remember on Burning Love when Jennifer Aniston wore THE EXACT SAME COSTUME? REMEMBER THIS? MAGGIE, REMEMBER? I AM DEAD, BURNING LOVE AND THIS SHOW ARE OFFICIALLY THE SAME THING.
Everyone’s wearing red, and everyone is upset about it. Next season no one will wear red ever. The season after that, no one will wear red. Hailey, Rachel, Taylor, Lacey, Angela, and Dominique all wear red. There may even be more of them that I didn’t notice. Nick is greeted by the women with a cocktail and thanks them for being there because he’s done it 100 times.
Rachel gets the first time with Nick, and they flirt. Hard. She’s such a fucking queen, she’s a star from the get-go. She, like me, has more cousins than siblings, and she loves everyone in her family. She’s got goals and is good at her job. Christen teaches Nick to ballroom dance - for some reason, I feel like Nick is the rare white guy who can actually dance - and Danielle talks about how she really wants a rose that night. I actually think Nick is approaching this like an adult? With thought and confidence and a good amount of self-deprecation, which is nice.
Chris Harrison drops...
THE FIRST IMPRESSION ROSE!!!!!!!!
Corinne does something with tokens and really wants to kiss him tonight. Vanessa’s friend submitted her for the show and considers it fate that the only guy she wanted was Nick, and Nick’s now Le Bachelor. Vanessa wants to kiss him so badly and it seems like it might happen until Corinne, confirming her space as this season’s villain, comes in and interrupts him to kiss him. Everyone sees, of course, and everyone’s shocked. Corinne’s so gross, she’s all but smiling during the kiss which is so weird. This season is weird. Corinne is described as “the first one to kiss him, and the first one to double-dip.” They’re not wrong, but the season has officially begun.
Jasmine G is upset because she wanted time to talk to him and Nick asks her to wait briefly. The girls start drinking heavily to cope because this show and the environment is anxiety inducing. Everyone wants to be friends with Alexis the Dolphin Shark, who insists she’s a dolphin. Corinne makes weird references to her body being possibly ugly under there. Alexis is drunk and in the pool, and Nick finds her there and insists she’s a shark. It really is concerning that she refuses to acknowledge that she’s a shark. Her costume has a fin. Nick tells her she’s gotta keep it on all night long because he’s probably into that. Doesn't Nick Being a Furry seem like a thing that would happen in 2017?
LizBot 2000 cannot get over the fact that she’s met Nick before and is really excited that he doesn’t remember - girl, that is a BAD THING that he doesn’t remember. Nick admits that he does remember her7 and it’s been a while since they last saw each other. He’s basically confused as to why she wouldn’t give him her number but feels comfortable enough going on this show8. She still thinks he was a dick before she saw him on Paradise, and Nick is hella confused. He just calls her out on her bullshit time and time again and it’s incredible. They get interrupted and LizBot tries to stall but Nick’s like, “uh, hell no, I’m gonna talk to everyone tonight, sorry.” and ditches her.
Everyone’s nervous because the First Impression Rose is still out there, and everyone’s worried Corinne might get it because she kissed him first, and Corinne’s not worried. The girl who gave him maple syrup is Canada, of course, some girl has a Carrie Bradshaw quote? WHY DOES ANYONE WANT TO BE CARRIE BRADSHAW? Her boyfriend Danielle M. seems too shy and timid for this show, but I like her. She’s a nurse for sick babies and likes the challenge. They seem to have a cute rapport, and Nick comes for the First Impression Rose.
OMG. OMG. OH MY GOD9.
IT GOES TO MY QUEEN AND GODDESS RACHEL.
YES.
YES!!!!!!!!!
THIS SEASON IS ALREADY AMAZING.
A BLACK WOMAN GETS THE FIRST IMPRESSION ROSE, TRACEE ELLIS ROSS WINS A GOLDEN GLOBE, VIOLA DAVIS WINS A GOLDEN GLOBE, AND EVERYTHING IS BETTER FOR US ALL10.
Nick says it was “obvious” that he wanted to give the rose to Rachel by the end of the night, and they kiss. I am alive. You can tell she was genuinely shocked. They hold hands. This is true love.
We’re headed into the Rose Ceremony, but not before Nick confers with Chris Harrison. He's pissed at Liz.
Roses go to: Vanessa, Danielle, Christen, Astrid/Astird, Corinne (who thought she might not get a rose because she kissed him), Elizabeth W, Jasmine G (who cried when she thought she wouldn’t get time with him), Raven, Kristina (who also cried because she didn’t know what to expect), Danielle M, Sarah, Josephine, Lacey, Taylor The Mental Health Professional, Alexis (who still refuses to admit she’s a shark), Hailey, Whitney, Dominique, Jaimi11, Brittany (who seems like an irl Cecily Strong character from SNL), and LizBot 2000, of course.
That means we’re losing Olivia, Angela, Ida Marie, Briana, Susannah, Michelle, and Lauren, who never evolved past “Viall-Hussey”, which is so sad. I liked her. Can’t wait to see all of you in Paradise, though! We’ll certainly have forgotten you by that point.
This Season, on La Bachelor: NICK FREEZES TO DEATH, Into The Wild-style. Lots of dancing! Lots of kissing! Lots of adventures! Finland! Jaimi’s bisexual! THE FUCKING BACKSTREET BOYS. Corinne takes her top off for a photograph, everyone wants to fuck Nick, and Liz tells everyone about her and Nick banging. Vanessa cries, everyone cries, and Corinne is an immature villain. Corinne tries to bang Nick, and Nick cries a ton. Nick doesn’t like being The Bachelor? And the proposals happen in an elk lodge. Gross. Currently crossing my fingers that Nick gets rejected a third time, despite my current love for him.
See you tomorrow for Vanderpump Rules, and Wednesday for The Bachelor, and THE FIRST EPISODE OF MY PODCAST. I'll post details about it soon.
Random Assessments from The Desk of Amanda:
Initial thoughts about Nick: He’s great.I think he’s going to be a great Bachelor, maybe the best in Bachelor history, which is saying a lot. He’s charming, self-deprecating, and seems to be in it for real, which is strange.
Bachelor Fantasy Picks: Vanessa, Rachel, Danielle.
Vanessa looks like Brunette Jessica Chastain, Michaela Watkins, Andi Dorfman, Julia Roberts, Madeleine Stowe, Jennifer Love Hewitt.
Corinne and Sarah have the same face and different hair.
My boyfriend claims the key to making past the first night: asking the Bachelor/Ette how they’re feeling and if things are going well. Make it about them, y’all. Don’t try to sell yourself. Also, be super-de-duper hot.
I hate the voice-overs of people hoping to be called.
NO ONE GOT WASTED DRUNK ON THE FIRST NIGHT AND MADE A FOOL OF THEMSELVES. What a disappointment.
Nick and Kaitlyn really, really hate each other.
In this new year, I’m literally thrilled that Josh and Amanda are donzo for good and for realsies. BYE HEAUX.
Chris and Ben, disrespectfully. ↩︎
Was his hair ORANGE in Kaitlyn’s season? ORANGE? ↩︎
I hate the Quebecois French accent. ↩︎
Kim’s old face! ↩︎
Reese only wears yellow or purple on the red carpet, and it is so boring. ↩︎
I would totally be the girl who competes on this show with the sole purpose of making friends. I’m here to make friends, not to win. ↩︎
After some producer prodding, probably. ↩︎ ↩︎
It’s because she wants to shill weight-loss teas and go on Marriage Boot Camp like her best friends Jade And Tanner, The Golden Couple Who Got Engaged In Paradise And Married On TV Earlier Last Year, Remember Them? ↩︎
My favorite part of the FIR is that it sits in front of the girls, taunting them for hours. ↩︎
I also love the girls who are trying not to be like “... But she’s black????” It’s so obvious. #BlackGirlMagic is real. ↩︎
My boyfriend referred to her as “Septum Piercing”, so that’s her name. ↩︎

Rural and suburban folk in the midwest and everywhere else have the same culture and values as their southern counterparts and are viewed with hatred and contempt by the urbanite hippies. It will be over quickly since you cant get food in the cities without shipping it in. They are also a powerful and vocal but tiny minority. Their pets will tear their progressive urban utopias apart. It won’t be a civil war. The cities will be anarchy, the south will be race war, and everybody in the cities will die. It’ll be over so quick it wouldn’t be fair to call it a war I think California or large parts of the Bay Area on down turn into Latino ethnic states. Depending what happens to the Chinese population in the Bay the Chicoms might actually push in to carve out a sphere of influence in SF. Texas and Florida turn into Hispanic/White semi-ethnostate states with token black populations. They deport all their Nogs to Miss, Lousinana, Alabama. The nogs will likely end with Mississippi as an ethnostate when they get pushed out of those ther states plus Georgia. That place will be where any blacks that don’t play ball under those new regimes will be deported to. The Northeast turns into a bloodbath for years, but the Great Plains and Pacific norwest come out fine. Thoughts?
Unlike the first civil war, the urban areas are now completely dependent upon rural areas to survive. We are also extremely infrastructure dependent. Remember when the first civil war happened before the electrical grid existed. It occurred before the significant supply of urban water came from wastewater plants and reclamation (requiring power and lots of chemical shipments).
The moment the infrastructure like highways and railways to the cities are destroyed or captured is the moment the urban areas begin to starve and riot. The urban areas will literally destroy themselves as the inhabitants panic just trying to survive (food, water, electricity will be gone quickly).
Which is what we want. A good anon should have mapped out key infrastructure near him that supports his area and the next urban area and have a plan of dealing with or securing it in SHTF.
Also know where your Nog areas are and think of natural ways to keep them bottled in.
Critical infrastructure like substations, power plants, aqueducts and pumping plants will be heavily defended as high priority assets. Many cities also have ports and will be able to receive goods and support from allies. They won't be completely isolated. Also a fair amount of inland cities will likely side with rural areas (middle america).
In a real SHTF hot civil war, law enforcement will be low priority. Infested areas will be rampant with gangs going full highwayman, hijacking citizens and raiding homes. It will be fucking ugly. You can't really bottle them in. Nog gangs would essentially be running their own micro insurgencies inside the overall conflict.
Both sides will have insider threats. Civil war is not simple. It's not pretty. It's not thou are on and who wins. And if you don't die, your way of life will be changed, likely for the rest of your life.
Imagine the small minority of sympathizers in your area poisoning your town's water supply. Imagine organized firestarting all around your town burning your house down and killing many of your friends and family. Its not going to be fun and clean. There are no pure divisions. Its not like everyone north of X state is the enemy, its more like X% of your local populace is now going to try to kill you and your family covertly.
Nobody could tell you accurately. It would take a concerted effort to revolt by a lot of people. Civil wars typically start in 2 ways:
You usually see a shit-ton of the people in the streets protesting the government (which we don't). The whole resist trump marches and shit are not comprised of people who want a civil war, they are mostly comprised of people who just don't like the president and want someone else in office; they are not willing to sacrifice their lives in this effort.
Or
The country is invaded or some kind of governmental collapse causes a power vacuum.
In otherwords, we are not close to a civil war. We do see an extremely anemic threat of domestic terror from Antifa, but that can be almost instantly quelled. If the federal government designates them a terrorist organization, they will be completely fucked. Their loudest, most influential, and violent will be v& and shipped to Guantanamo so fast their heads will spin.
I’d say 10 years at least but no more than 20.
In the next ten years and after this census we are really going to start feeling some demographics realities. After the census a lot of interior red states are going to lose congressional seats and EC votes (the seats matter more) to Blue states- that’s what this influx has been about from the getgo. Remember the census counts everyone with a pulse for congressional representation NOT legal citizens so the next reapportionment secures a Democratic Congress for perpetuity.
The Republicans will NEVER take back the house. Within 16 years white demographics are not enough to hold an election. That’s when the real fun begins...
I wouldn't bet on it. As we stand now, the democratic party stands to be hoisted by their own petards. The acceptance rate of socialist policies by young americans is dangerously high, and this could stand to make the current cracks in the democrat party now to fracturing fissures in as little as 10 years. If a real fracture occurs and another party forms. the democrats essentially lose a large percent of their young to mid-30s voting base and republicans (if they hold their sails) will dominate them. Right now there is just too much up in the air to make a solid determination either way, just that we aren't close yet.
Except the socialist policies are more accepted by the younger non-white voting base and their numbers are rapidly rising. Furthermore Bernie has successfully managed to create a marriage of that socialism with “racial justice”. Effectively socialism gives the minorities their “equitable” share of American wealth.
The only non-whites that are not hip to this were already elites back home before fleeing socialism to come here. They’re already Republican and there’s simply are just not enough. The issue is the Democrats have tapped into the poorest classes in the hemisphere and have been importing them by the millions over the last decade. I know these people- they will vote to line their pockets. They are two layers deep into the Democratic Party- they get financial justice from socialism AND racial justice from wealth redistribution.
Don’t discount the fact that the education system isn’t built to handle this influx either. These kids will grow up without skills and without an economy to participate in and they will be angry and they will coming to whites for their due.
I prophecy that a man will appear. A good man who loves his nation. (CIA CLOWN) He will tell us that minorities are to blame for dividing us. He will unite whites. Blacks will be given Florida because of trace sympathy about slavery. A wall will be built just south of Jacksonville, all the way across to the other side. Hispanics will be shipped en masse to their countries of origin. Jewish assets will be seized and they will be sent to Israel. The LGBT community will be identified as a health crisis that endangers everyone else with the threat of STD’s and they will be banned an shunned. Mental hospitals will be restored and they will be put in them where they all belong. Having been sickened with interventionism, the US will return to the old ways of war. Destroying nations that don’t behave and leaving them in ruins without giving aid or helping them rebuild thus reverting countries back to the Stone Age. A moratorium will be put on all immigration except from European countries and Australia. Except for Swedes. Because we don’t accept cucks.
But Blacks? Mestizo and Indian hispanics? The Democratic Party appeals to them at all aspects of their life from young to old. The post Great Society Democratic party is built upon a foundation of pandering to nonwhites and growing their numbers in order to solidify their power. It’s machine politics and they did it before with the Irish except what you have today are minorities that are too far away from being accepted into white society and supporting the current power structure. Castiza hispanics yes but Blacks and the rest- no. The majority of Blacks and low class hispanics will never accept white rule as a basic tenet of this society.
No matter how hard the Trumpster tries to redefine the national main to include based people of all races it is too late and that line will not hold- the cat is already out of the bag and the non-based Blacks and hispanics want their gibs from Whitey.
Marianne Williamson literally just did some math on the stage “involving 40 acres and a mule” and she actually sounded like she knew what she was talking about lol
Cities now have massive populations of leeches, criminals, and non combatants that would require enormous resources and manpower to keep in line. The major coastal cities could theoretically survive on foreign aid but I don't think they will be able to organize an army that can be used to project power into the rural areas, especially if they have tens of thousands of people tied down maintaining order and guarding infrastructure. The major coastal cities could survive on foreign aid for a long time and would be difficult to assault. Expect foreign combat troops to be deployed as well. Probably hundreds of thousands split between the coastal cities. Most of the liberal sides combat power will likely come from allied military formations.
Interior cities wont survive such a conflict. The interior of the country would be easy to secure but the most realistic chance of ending the war would be to capture the nuclear arsenal and use it to threaten the countries supplying the liberal side. Otherwise I don't see how such a war could be brought to an end.
You didn't realize there was a white pill hidden in #WhiteGenocide did you? Neither did the Jews. They did this to themselves.

Whites are the fiercest and most capable warriors. Do not fuck with us.
http://magaimg.net/img/7nez.jpg
Nostalgia for our culture and stolen prosperity is what will fuel the revolution. This is why the Jews seek to destroy our history. It is our kryptonite.
http://magaimg.net/img/7rey.jpg
We also own the largest amount of guns for a single homogenous civilian group. 46 million white, right wing adults own 125 million firearms. For context, this is 21 times larger than the world's largest army of 2.1 million soldiers in China and 31 times larger than the U.S. Army, most of whom are on the right.

And despite all the Jewish brainwashing and trickery, we are waking up unlike never before and realizing we are part of a much larger group. IT IS OK TO BE WHITE.
http://magaimg.net/img/7heq.jpg
The Jews hate to see a group superior to theirs create the wonders of the world.
http://magaimg.net/img/7nf1.jpg
This is why they throw everything they have at us. Through all their media outlets, they try to convince us being white is a curse and is detrimental to the world.

The reality is that there will come a time in the very near future when the white man wakes up and decides he's done taking shit. The world will change forever.
http://magaimg.net/img/7h4p.jpg
NO MORE BROTHER WARS
http://magaimg.net/img/7nfo.jpg
That depends on how much the rest of the world is willing to ethnically cleanse white americans. All of africa and the middle east would be willing to take down america. China wants a piece of our ass. Latin America is going to zerg rush as many shock troops as possible through the southern border. The only true allies we'll get are europeans in either europe or Australia/New Zealand. Maybe some based asians at best but I doubt the Japs are going to help us after the nukes we dropped on them. If the rest of the world gets told that America is now le ebil fascist nation then it's possible that they'll gang up on us to split up America. That doesn't even include the people already here that are willing to slaughter whites. We have a chance at winning but it's going to be tough. Most of the world is going to turn it's back on us but they're pretty much already doing that
The United States was founded as and always intended to be a European ethnostate. Immigration of anyone non European WAS NOT ALLOWED until the Immigration and Nationality act of 1965. The Jews played an outsized role in getting this legislation passed and ushering in the genocide of whites in America.

Bluster aside, US and China vulnerable to pain from tariffs
WASHINGTON — The U.S. and Chinese governments have been flashing a lot of bravado just before firing the first shots in a conflict that risks erupting into a mutually damaging trade war.
“China will not bow in the face of threats and blackmail, nor will it be shaken in its resolve to defend global free trade,” a spokesman for Beijing’s Commerce Ministry declared Thursday, one day before the two sides were to subject billions of dollars of each other’s goods to punishing tariffs.
President Donald Trump, who ran for the White House on a vow to force China and other nations to reform their policies, has insisted that a trade war would be easy to win.
Yet among the people and business in both countries that are suddenly under threat from higher costs, closed-off markets and deep uncertainties, there’s far less confidence. A trade war between the world’s two biggest economies will leave casualties — from makers of musical instruments to farmers in America’s Midwest to a manufacturer of soldering irons south of Shanghai.
In some areas and industries, pain is already being felt.
“There’s going to be an awful lot of battles lost on the way,” said Tim Velde, a fourth-generation farmer in western Minnesota’s Yellow Medicine County who is bracing for China’s tariffs on American soybeans. “I don’t see anybody winning.”
Tong Feibing, general manager of China’s Ningbo Top East Technology Co., which makes soldering irons and had been exporting 30 per cent of its output to the United States — before sales plunged in advance of tariffs — is worried.
“There is a chance the company will lose money and might bankrupt,” Tong warned. “I will do whatever I can, including layoffs.”
At 12:01 a.m. Eastern time Friday, the United States was set to slap tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese products. And Beijing was ready to respond in kind. From there, the hostilities could escalate quickly and drastically. Trump has threatened to slap tariffs on up to $450 billion in Chinese imports — nearly 90 per cent of all goods China sent the U.S. last year — if Beijing continues to retaliate and doesn’t yield to Trump’s demands.
The Trump administration wants China to drop what it calls its predatory drive to supplant American technological dominance, through tactics that include forcing U.S. companies to reveal trade secrets in return for access to the Chinese market and committing cyber-theft.
Trade wars can draw blood in several ways. Exporters face taxes on what they ship across the Pacific. This makes their products more expensive and less competitive.
And importers must pay more for the foreign machinery and components they buy — and then decide whether they can afford to pass along those higher costs to their customers.
In choosing the Chinese goods to tax, the Trump administration tried to limit the impact on American consumers. It aimed instead mainly at industrial products. Yet those tariffs will hurt American companies that rely on Chinese-made components and machinery.
Most Americans wouldn’t recognize the vast majority of the Chinese imports that the Trump administration is targeting. But they would recognize the companies that use them.
PetSmart, for example, says the administration’s tariffs will inflate the cost of imported water filters for home aquariums. Jacuzzi has said its hot tubs and bathtubs will be affected by higher U.S. tariffs on pumps. Newell Brands, which owns Rubbermaid, says Americans may face higher costs for its imported FoodSaver vacuum sealer products, which are used to store and preserve food.
Moog Music Inc. in Asheville, North Carolina, known for synthesizers used by the likes of David Bowie and Michael Jackson, warns that the tariffs on imported Chinese circuit boards and other parts will “immediately and drastically” increase the cost of its instruments and might require layoffs. In a worst-case scenario, Moog said, it might have to move some manufacturing overseas. It’s urging employees to call their congressional representatives to protest the tariffs.
In southern China, a company that makes LED-lighting is scrambling to find alternatives to the U.S. market, which used to buy 30 per cent of its output. The company’s salespeople have looked instead for buyers from Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, according to company manager Yang Zhuangnin. He said the company, based near Hong Kong, will try to make improvements to draw American buyers despite higher prices.
“Another method we have been thinking about is to send almost-finished products to another country, and then do the simple production there and re-export to the United States,” Yang said. “Clients may have other ways and suggestions. We’ll see.”
In selecting American products for retaliatory tariffs, Beijing chose many that would inflict political as well as economic pain. Its target list is heavy on American farm exports — a shot at Trump supporters in the nation’s heartland. Farmers are also well-represented by lobbyists and powerful members of Congress who might be able to influence the Trump administration.
Don Bloss, who grows corn, soybeans, sorghum and what on 3,5000 acres of rolling land in southeastern Nebraska, says the tariff threat has already driven down crop prices.
“Right now,” Bloss said, “it’s a matter of how much money you’re going to lose, not how much money you’re going to make.”
Automakers could endure pain, too, once China applies higher tariffs to vehicles from the United States. Beijing already imposes a 25 per cent tariff on imported autos. Retaliatory tariffs would likely double that tax, said Kristen Dziczek of the Center for Automotive Research, an industry think-tank . That could mean trouble for BMW, Mercedes, Tesla and Ford, the largest exporters of vehicles from the U.S. to China.
All would likely raise prices, which would slow sales and could force production cuts. A result could be layoffs, Dziczek said, especially at a BMW SUV factory near Spartanburg, South Carolina, and a Mercedes SUV plant near Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In addition, the SUVs those plants make include parts from overseas that would be subject to increased U.S. tariffs, further raising prices, she said.
Trump’s trade team insists that the United States wields a decisive edge over China in a trade war: China sells much more to America ($524 billion last year) than Americans sell China ($188 billion) and so is more vulnerable to tariffs.
But trade analysts are skeptical that Beijing will blink first. The question, said Philip Levy of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, is which side has more political tolerance for pain.
“From China’s perspective, this is an unacceptable foreign assault that they will resist at all costs,” said Levy, who was a trade adviser in President George W. Bush’s White House. “From the perspective of U.S. businesses and farms, this is a self-inflicted wound. That will lead to mounting pressure on members of Congress, which does retain the power to do something about it.”

Alabama’s Dayspring Dairy: Startup From Scratch
By Tim King
Starting an on-farm sheep dairy from scratch is a daunting challenge but it can be done: Greg and Ana Kelly, of Dayspring Dairy near Gallant, Alabama, are proof of it.
Neither Greg nor Ana had any farming experience before they decided to become shepherds and cheesemakers. Greg’s experience as an information technology manager certainly had not prepared him for his new career.
“Neither of us had any previous experience aside from the goat in my grandfather’s back yard,” Greg said. “We were both city kids, so we had a very steep learning curve, which we filled with a lot of traveling to learn, classes and reading.”
Ana’s years of work as a chef and food stylist has helped her as the cheese maker at Dayspring and her hobby was likely the seed that germinated into their family’s current business.
“Years before we dreamed of starting a farm I regularly made yogurt and yogurt cheese for the family,” she said. “We then started making mozzarella.”
Once the Kellys decided to become cheese makers and livestock managers they faced two questions: Where would their farm be and what species of livestock would provide milk for their cheese?
To answer the last question the Kellys did some market research. “Looking around our area we discovered that there are already a number of cow and goat cheese operations,” Greg said. “Entering an already mature market and competing with established businesses was not a recipe for success. When we finally did visit a sheep dairy, we both knew that was what we wanted. We absolutely loved the cheese and the animals.”
But to continue their newly discovered love of dairy sheep the Kellys needed land with grass. Preferably low-cost land, since they had established a budget for themselves. The hilly land in northeastern Alabama’s piedmont region, near unincorporated Gallant and not far from Birmingham, was ideal.
“Our main requirement was finding good pasture land that would be ready for sheep,” Greg said. “We actually had very little choice, due to a limited budget. And were thrilled to find this farm within our budget.”

Even old pros say they got dozens of tips for their flocks by reading this guide. YES! I want this Free Report »
Dairying with Friesian Crosses on Gulf Coast Native Sheep
But of course there was a problem: That rich grassy land in the southern U.S. was not a good location to raise North America’s most productive dairy breed.
East Friesian sheep, with their origins in cool Northern Germany, do well on grass, but aren’t genetically prepared to handle the heat and parasites of the southern United States. And worming the East Friesians was not an option: “An animal on wormers can’t be milked,” Greg says.
But, for the last three hundred years, southern shepherds have been developing a breed that is up to the challenge of the region’s hot and humid climate: The Native Gulf Coast Sheep, or Piney Woods Sheep, can take all the parasites the southern U.S. can throw at them.
So Greg and Ana chose to combine East Friesian’s high production genetics with the parasite and foot rot resistance of Native Gulf Coast Sheep.
“We got our first small flock of Gulf Coast ewes from a farm near Athens, Georgia,” Greg said. “We bred them to a Friesian ram we bought from the first sheep dairy we visited in Tennessee. They are considered to be ‘milky,’ so mixing them with the Friesians does lessen the milk volume, but not as much as would be expected. Given the parasite loads in the deep south it’s a strategy that has worked for us. Last season and this season to date, we have not used any chemical wormers on any of our adult sheep and very little on the lambs.”
Greg says the ram lambs are sold readily to various ethnic customers.
Gulf Coast Sheep, like East Friesians, do well on a largely forage diet. Dayspring farm is able to keep its sheep on pasture for ten months of the year. High quality alfalfa is purchased to get the flock through the other two months.
“We do provide a custom made feed to the ewes during milking, to make certain they have enough calories to produce their maximum amount of milk and stay healthy,” Greg said.
Greg says it was a great blessing to find affordable grassland in Alabama’s piedmont region, near enough to commercial centers like Birmingham, Huntsville and Atlanta to find plenty of buyers for their sheep dairy products.
Setting Up A Dairy Operation
Greg learned a lot about shepherding from Tennessee shepherd and cheese maker Sheri Palko. He also took classes at the Sheep Dairy School in Spooner, Wisconsin.
“The school was absolutely fantastic and really prepared me to run a dairy and care for the animals. Sadly, it’s no longer being offered,” he said.
Ana found mentors and organized classes to be helpful as well.
“Once we landed on starting a cheese business in earnest, I attended cheese making courses in Kentucky and Vermont,” she said. “I also worked alongside two southern cheese makers for mentoring.”
Ana says that learning to make cheese with cows milk is helpful but that there are differences between cow and sheep milk.
“The cheese making classes I took focused on cow’s milk since it is so readily available,” she said. “There are slight changes that have to be made when adapting a cow cheese recipe to work with sheep milk. Also, there are certain cheeses, such as mozzarella-string cheese, that don’t work with sheep milk due to the high protein content that interferes with a stretchable curd formation.”
As Ana and Greg were learning the art and craft of their new skills they also had to design buildings to house the milking parlor, the cheese making operation, lambing facilities and other aspects of their new business. Greg said that the biggest expense they faced when starting their business was the steel building.
“But it’s hard to beat the durability and flexibility of this building,” he said.
Greg challenged himself by doing most of the construction work himself.
“I grew up doing construction and carpentry type work with my dad and grandfather, but never having built something of this magnitude forced me to stretch my skill-set,” he said. “If you know where to look, you can see my mistakes. Rest assured I don’t point them out.”
Greg, who is responsible for milking duties on the farm, designed a double sided pit milking parlor as part of the multi-purpose building.
“Looking at pictures and notes from our travels and classes I sat down and drew one up,” he said. “The parlor is able to accommodate twenty-four sheep at a time. I knew we would have to start with bucket milkers, but eventually we would move to a pipeline system, so I designed it to allow that later on.”
Because a lot of small cow dairies have gone out of business in recent decades there is a lot of stainless steel milking gear available, Greg says.
“I was eventually able to purchase a whole pipeline system intended for cows including ‘Clean in Place’ (CIP) 7.5 horsepower vacuum pump, all of the stainless pipe, sinks and a host of fittings for only $2000,” he said. “I did have to drive to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to get it but it was well worth it. Adapting it to sheep was relatively simple with replacement claws and an updated pulsator system.”
Greg is primarily responsible for milking and livestock management at Dayspring Dairy. He says that milking, from prep to clean-up, takes about three hours.
By crossing dairy Friesians on “milky” Gulf Coast Native ewes, worming was all but eliminated, despite northeast Alabama’s short, mild winters, hot, humid summers and the Kellys’ largely pasture-based sheep operation.
Cheese Biz Strategies
Ana is in charge of cheese making. She says that she had a number of objectives in mind when they chose which cheeses to market.
“We wanted cheeses that would have broad appeal, be relatively easy to make with minimal labor, and have exceptional shelf life and storability,” she said. “Our fresh cheeses are pasteurized, which allows us to sell them right away for a rapid revenue stream. We do a few select aged cheeses from raw milk that have to be aged for a minimum of sixty days. But there again, they are simpler to make and can age for over a year.”
The fresh cheeses that Ana makes include Fresca spreadable cheese, Halloumi and Feta.
Halloumi is a unique cheese because it doesn’t melt. When it’s sautéed, grilled or fried, it forms a crisp, golden brown crust.
The three types of aged cheese that Ana makes are a Spanish cheese called Manchego and two types of Gouda, including one with truffles.
Ana’s previous work, as a food stylist, was helpful in creating the attractive product photos on the Dayspring website.
The Kellys sell their cheese at farmers markets in Birmingham, Huntsville and Atlanta, as well as at festivals, online at their website and from their farm store. Their farm store is part of their farm tourism enterprise.
“We really enjoy visitors to the farm. It’s a pleasure to see the reactions they have to seeing sheep and how everything is produced,” Greg said.
Farm visitors—everything from school children to groups of senior citizens—learn not only about cheese making but also about the making of Dayspring’s unique caramel, Dulce de Leche.
Many small-scale cattle dairy operations have gone out of business in recent decades, leaving behind lots of used but still very usable stainless dairy equipment at affordable prices. This 12-on-each-side pit milking parlor speeds the milking process and was all home built.
“My father is Colombian and I lived for many years in South America,” Ana said. “Dulce de Leche style caramels are basically the peanut butter of South America. It’s everywhere and every country makes different styles. Greg was the one that came up with the idea of making ours from sheep milk. As far as we know, we are the only ones in the entire country making it from sheep milk. The caramel production has actually been more difficult and technical than cheese, but the trade-off is a shelf stable product that is in a totally different category than cheese and is simply delicious.”
Shelf stability is important because Dayspring is a seasonal dairy. There are a few months of each year when they aren’t producing milk or making cheese. Sales of the shelf stable Dulce de Leche to the local Whole Foods store—and through other markets—provide an income stream during that period. Greg says that the Kellys chose to be seasonal so as to keep their sanity.
“In our travels, I met a lot of dairymen and women who were year-round milkers,” he said. “Many hadn’t left their immediate area in years. If you’re making a living selling fluid milk, year round is a requirement. However, with cheese, we’re able to buffer those few months with sales of frozen soft cheese, caramel and aged cheese. So sales don’t stop. We just get a break from production and may squeeze a vacation in. This is also the time of year that we do major improvements or repairs that may not be possible while producing.”
Ana worked as a food stylist in the past, so she was experienced in making good products more appealing to buyers. Her strategies in choosing products to make helped assure success in an industry familiar to few consumers and very few other farm operators.
You can find photos and videos of Dayspring Dairy products, as well as the milking parlor and the East Friesian-Gulf Coast crossbred sheep at their website, DayspringDairy.com.
You can also order the two varieties of sheep milk caramel or any of their aged or fresh cheeses at the same site. The dairy’s phone is 205-359-9955.

U.S. Gulf Coast Braces For Fast-Approaching Hurricane Nate
Map tracks the forecast and positioning outlook for Hurricane Nate; 2c x 6 inches; 96.3 mm x 152 mm;
NEW ORLEANS — Rain bands from fast-moving Hurricane Nate lashed southeast Louisiana on Saturday afternoon as the storm headed for an evening landfall and residents in vulnerable, low-lying areas fled.
“It’s coming,” Larry Bertron said as he and his wife Kimberlee prepared to leave their home in the Braithwaite community of vulnerable Plaquemines Parish.
Hurricane veterans, they lost one home in south Louisiana to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and were preparing to leave the home they rebuilt after Hurricane Isaac in 2012. Many of the houses around theirs remain abandoned and blighted from Isaac.
“This will be it,” said Bertron, who complained that local officials haven’t done enough to improve area levees. “If it floods again, this will be it. I can’t live on promises.”
Nate was located midday Saturday about 105 miles (170 kilometers) south of the mouth of the Mississippi River. It was still a Category 1 storm but was expected to reach Category 2 strength before making landfall. Nate killed at least 21 people after strafing Central America earlier in the week.
States of emergency were declared in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama; officials announced evacuation orders in low-lying areas and the opening of shelters for anyone who needs them. New Orleans residents fretted over a city drainage system in which weaknesses were revealed during summer flash floods.
Waterside sections of New Orleans, outside the city’s levee system, were under an evacuation order. About 2,000 people were affected. But not everyone was complying.
Gabriel Black of New Orleans’ Venetian Isles community sent his wife, a friend, and three dogs to a hotel in the city. Black stayed behind because an 81-year-old neighbor refused to leave.
“I know it sounds insane, but he has bad legs and he doesn’t have anybody who can get to him,” Black said.
Others nearby were staying as well. Nancy and Cleve Bell said their house is built so high off the ground that it stayed dry in the floods after Hurricane Katrina. Nancy Bell said they have a generator and plenty of supplies, and will be safe.
Anticipation of Nate’s high winds, rain and storm surge prompted evacuations in the barrier island town of Grand Isle and the coastal town of Lafitte.
The vast majority of New Orleans residents were not under such an order. But a 7 p.m. curfew was declared for the city, whose fragile pumping and drainage system could face a major test once Nate strikes. System weaknesses - including the failure of some pumps and power-generating turbines - were exposed after an Aug. 5 deluge flooded homes and businesses in some sections of the city.
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said 109 of 120 pumps are functioning, which is 92 percent capacity.
“Right now this storm should not bring us anything that we’re not prepared to handle,” Landrieu said Saturday.
Forecaster said Nate could dump 3 to 6 inches (7 to 15 centimeters) of rain on the region — with isolated totals of up to 10 inches (25 centimeters).
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said he spoke with President Trump on Saturday morning. “He assured me that LA would have all the assistance we need as we prepare for #Nate,” the governor posted on Twitter.
In Alabama, the Bankhead Tunnel - which passes under the Mobile River - was closed, with large doors and sandbags covering the entrances. On Dauphin Island — a barrier island south of Mobile — owners hauled boats out of the water. The major concern was the storm surge was projected to coincide with high tide. Shelters were being open for coastal residents.
Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency in six southernmost counties. State officials warned storm surge was the biggest danger in that state’s low-lying coastal areas, as well as high winds that could damage mobile homes. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency announced the opening of shelters on the coast Saturday. Crews were lowering high masts that hold street lights along the coast to keep the lights from becoming projectiles in high winds.
The National Hurricane Center said a hurricane warning was in effect from Grand Isle, Louisiana, to the Alabama-Florida border and also for metropolitan New Orleans and nearby Lake Pontchartrain. Tropical storm warnings extended west of Grand Isle to Morgan City, Louisiana, and around Lake Maurepas and east of the Alabama-Florida border to the Okaloosa-Walton County line in the Florida Panhandle.
