I've just realized Oak is a character everyone's pushing on the Throne, to power, but even though he doesn't want it, he's hardly passive or truly irresponsible. He wants to chase after his lady-love, but that doesn't mean he'll let others to fend for themselves. And eventually, he even accepts position of power to stay with his beloved.
It's just refreshing to watch a hero, who doesn't run and throw it all away for others- "better suited"- to take care of it.
Alina Starkov would never, and yes- I'm also still bitter about Elsa in second Frozen and that shit MCU pulled with Thor.

A.J Pollard’s biography on Edward IV was so cringe lol (generic; minor but frustrating inaccuracies; intensely judgmental at times and oddly dismissive at others while never considering the broader context; entirely diminished and trivialized Elizabeth Woodville as both queen and wife of his main subject in the name of "defending" her; created a false dichotomy between Edward and Henry VII’s styles of ruling and lauded the latter at the former’s expense even though Henry literally followed Edward’s example for the very things Pollard was criticizing Edward for; had a downright nonsensical and thoroughly misleading conclusion about Edward’s legacy & Richard’s usurpation that was based entirely on hindsight, Pollard's own assumptions, and the complete downplaying Richard’s agency and actions to emphasize what Pollard wrongly and misleadingly claimed were Edward's so-called 'failings', etc, etc)
I wanted to buy his book on Henry V but after reading this shitshow and the synopsis of that book, im guessing it's going to be 10x worse, so...no thanks
#history media#this was written months ago im posting it to get it out of my drafts#it wasn't necessarily BAD. it was generic and readable. but it was very disappointing and misleading and its conclusion was just nonsense#listen I have no patience for the dumbfuck idea that edward somehow had the ultimate responsibility for his own son's deposition because#of his 'policies' during his reign. like I said it's based fully on hindsight and entirely devoid of actual context. it's bafflingly stupid#literally everyone expected Edward V to succeed his father and 'both hoped for and expected' (Croyland's own words) a successful reign#Edward V's deposition was richard and solely Richard's fault lol this should not be difficult to understand#the reason Richard's usurpation was possible in the first place was bcause everyone expected E5 to succeed and didn't expect Richard#do to what he did. nothing would have happened without his initiative and decisions. it had nothing to do with Edward's 'policies'#Edward's policies were fine. henry vii - who pollard vaunts to no end - literally *followed* them#and claiming that he failed to unite England under the Yorkist dynasty is just plain stupid#buddy if he truly failed at that then neither Richard III nor Henry VII would have thrones lol. both emphasized continuity with#him when aiming for the throne. like the whole point of 1483-85 was that it was a conflict WITHIN the 'Yorkist' dynasty#it was not an external threat against it.#'his legacy failed' his legacy didn't fail his brother destroyed it (while also presenting himself as his heir because logic what's logic?)#henry's victory was very much the triumph of his legacy (a claimant chosen by his supporters as the husband of his daughter)#like this is really not my interpretation it is literally what happened#i'm not trying to glorify e4 but his son did inherit the throne in a more advantageous circumstances than any other minor king of england#and frankly than most other adult kings. dumping blame on Edward's literal corpse rather than acknowledge Richard's agency is so tasteless#the problem isn't that edward made a mistake in trusting his brother. many other kings including Henry V also trusted theirs.#the problem is that his brother was willing to break that trust in a way that was unprecedented and broke all political norms of that age#ie: Richard's usurpation occurred because of Richard who re-ignited conflict to make himself king. please drill this into your head#also btw this illogical 'interpretation' is based entirely on Charles Ross' hatred and derision towards Elizabeth Woodville and her family#if you agree with this inteterpretation you agree with his vilification of them 🤷🏻‍♀️#anyway if you want a better interpretation that's actually analytical and looks a relevant rather than a flawed retrospective perspective#i would recommend rosemary horrox's 'richard iii: a study of service' and david horspool's 'richard iii: a ruler and his reputation'#anyway one last time: STOP downplaying Richard's agency and actions. historians who do this are stupid and embarrassing. bye.#(i should really post horspool's glorious takedown of ross and Pollard huh? it was very entertaining to read)

@mvndrvke ( theldry )
the fabric in her hands is the color of the moon, a silver white silken contraption—one that shines golden in the fire light. the princess holds it up in between her and theldry with a small, noncommittal hum, and a line forming in between her brows. she avoided just light colors on herself, yet the cut and design of it was lovely. wondering if perhaps she would not look too sallow in the torchlit ballroom, she was torn between this one, and a maroon velvet. one of her favorites. though the princess herself still stood in her riding leathers, her lips pursed. her eyes raise to offer her lady a soft, “ what say you ? it is a beautiful thing but, i do not know what i might pair it with, “ and perhaps of most import, “have you decided what you are going to wear this eve ? “

#having absolutely so many thoughts rn about maegor even outside of abo being his mother's son and this is objectively a terrible thing#bcs visenya is objectively terrible and she's hot while doing it what do you want me to do about that#but anyway. thoughts of maegor feeling violently cheated out of his birthright. not rhaena not the throne. aenys.#bcs visenya's birthright was not dragonstone it was rhaenys and aegon i and maybe not aegon i's dragonseed but he was her brother too#(orys)#and so she took that too#maegor who while aenys is heir and aenys sits the throne has CONSIDERABLY less issue with the succession and considerably MORE issue with.#aenys's marriage lol. he's like her?? a mere cousin??? not even a dragonrider?? not even a TARGARYEN?? unacceptable#he's LIVID when they wed him to ceryse instead to placate him. especially because at least rhaena would be his BLOOD jesus CHRIST#he doesn't let it stand for long tho!! either aegon i bends (he does) or he breaks (he won't) and when maegor comes to him DEMANDING#what he is owed. aegon i is like idk son. dragons aren't hounds. i can hardly tie them up and deliver them at your feet.#i.e. if your dragon refuses you not even i can help you. tame him yourself.#and that's wayyyy too much permission. maegor is VISENYA'S SON. so that's all he needs to be like bet. BET.#and boom this is how in a different world maegor did not usurp rhaena/aegon the uncrowned cause aegon is actually the fruit of his womb 🤣🤣#black magic womb!! what's a little blood sacrifice and black magic to get the mount you want. what's a lit manipulation and babytrapping#and seduction. and child-brideing. and homewrecking. and also giving birth to severely fucked up kids.#tho not as fucked up as maegor himself because they're not black magic THEMSELVES the womb that carried them is. the body that bore them is#think reneesme and bella's pregnancy. yes that. except maegor can take it even while v young because he's not entirely NORMAL.#to put it simple he's more balerion than he is aegon. he's more like a dragon than a person. constitution wise. this is not a good thing.#mind u he and alyssa v have CRAZY beef. aenys named his firstborn daughter after his mother and maegor named his firstborn aegon to show off#be like 'see? i gave you a son. aren't i better?' gloating whore. nasty asshole. tsk. serves him right that alyssa v fucks him over#he wanted to name his next kid after visenya (hence the first viserys) but he and alyssa v were pregnant at the same time#and she gave birth first. and stole his whole ass name for viserys. maegor got so livid he went into premature labor AND had to be stopped#from murdering aenys for allowing that. by aegon i himself. man had to pull out all his dad cards. still a miracle tho#terribly nyra and visenya style labor after that. three days of agony. visenya and aegon i play lion parents. vhagar is being SO loud#gives birth to a daughter—severely premature but big enough to pass for a small full term baby. she's smaller than aegon was but she's fiery#bruised by the labor but has maegor's eyes (visenya's eyes) and aenys's curly hair which is more cold than silver—like rhaenys's was#and maegor decides that if alyssa v stole his thunder for her first son then he shall steal hers for his first daughter. names her lysarra.#after alarra massey aka alyssa's mother. and then he's like NOW I'm good. moving on!! look brother a daughter 🥰 a bride for your son 🥰🥰#and meanwhile aenys is about to have a mental BREAK because maegor was only a little over halfway along and they were supposed to have TIME

Royal Ball AU
Tumblr media
Did Hilbert know what he was going to get himself into when he decided to sneak into a royal ball (other than a less-than-pleasant experience should he get caught)? No.
Was that going to stop him from sneaking into a royal ball? Also no.
Hilbert is the son of a former legendary adventurer, now a tavern keep. He helps maintain the tavern with his sister and his mother - his father is a treasure hunter and his contribution financially supports the tavern.
One night - more specifically, the night of a ball celebrating the princess’ birthday - Hilbert found himself wondering what such an event was actually like. Dancing was always a hobby of his, and he found himself wondering if he could sneak in and not get caught. He knew that it wouldn’t be possible without a fancy outfit for him to wear, so he resigned himself to wondering.
That was before he found the outfit in his room. Probably the most elegant outfit he had ever laid eyes on, and it was exactly his size too! He had no idea how it got there (*cough* @silverdeer *cough*) but he wasn’t going to question it.
With the help of Michelle - his Oshawott familiar - distracting the guards, Hilbert slipped into the event with no issues. There were some that could tell he wasn’t exactly invited - for example, Blue ( @evoblue ) and Lucas ( @timebranded ), but the two didn’t call the guards on him, nor did anybody else seem to have a clue. He even got to dance with the princess ( @unovasrose )! Not that he knew it was the princess he had asked to dance.
With his stunt - more specifically, his total inability to lie about it even if it was to save his skin - Hilbert also caught the attention of a certain god of fire that valued honesty above all else (spoiler alert it’s totally Reshi). They were more amused than anything else, so they decided to grant him their blessing.
Reshiram’s blessing gave Hilbert access to fire magic and a ‘get out of jail free card, because who would be dumb enough to imprison someone favored by a god of fire?

V; Main - The boys are the local modern-day wizards for a small West Texas town by the name of Morningstar. They deal with weird shit at least three times a week, some of it supernatural, most of it due to the locals fucking around and finding out.
V; Royal - Oleander is the crown prince of a rather dark kingdom, and is set to inherit the throne from his tyrant of a father, an evil sorcerer who will stop at nothing to gain absolute power. Ezra is Ollie’s magic tutor, a mysterious but kind wizard with more than a few secrets up his sleeves. He makes no effort to hide that he’s a tiefling, as it’s earned him quite a bit of respect in the eyes of the king, but he does hide a tender heart and a plotting mind behind a deceptively youthful face. Oleander is the ruler their kingdom needs, and Ezra intends to prove it.

Before reading The Prisoner's Throne, I skimmed through posts about it that appeared in #The Folk of the Air, and seeing the amount of hate towards Suren, I started the book expecting something horrible from her... except nothing really happens?
There's some standard prisoner-treatment she's not even present to, and one instance of demonstration of the bridle's power, when she believes he betrayed her and that's it?
Like: Please, provide direct quotes. I wanna read those atrocities. I'm confused!

"It is difficult to argue that [Edward IV] was wrong in what he did. His advancement of [Richard of Gloucester] can be criticized only by those who believe that the only good nobleman is an impotent nobleman. Medieval kings did not think in these terms. Gloucester’s power was valuable because it ensured royal control of a significant and troublesome part of the country. Nor can Edward be blamed for not foreseeing the ends to which Gloucester might put his power. The duke had been a loyal upholder of the house of York, a central figure in Edward’s polity*; there was no obvious reason why he should not occupy the same role under Edward V. In this respect, precedent was on Edward’s side. Previous minorities had seen squabbles over the distribution of power, but no young king had ever been deposed. Even royal uncles traditionally drew a line at that, something which explains why Gloucester’s actions seemed so shocking to contemporaries and, perhaps, the reason why he got away with it so easily in the short term.
In the immediate sense, Gloucester must take final responsibility for what happened in 1483. However one explains the motives behind his actions, things happened because he chose that they should: there is nothing in the previous reign which compelled him to act as he did."
-Rosemary Horrox, Richard III: A Study of Service
*Richard was also, yk, Edward's own brother who had been entirely loyal to him during his life. The problem wasn’t that Edward trusted Richard (why wouldn't he?), the problem is that Richard broke that trust in a horrible and unprecedented way to usurp a 12-year-old. Please understand the difference.
#wars of the roses#edward iv#richard iii#edward v#my post#The arguments of Ross and Pollard (et al) are so profoundly unserious and ahistorical#casting an unforeseeable turn of events as a predictable ('structural') one as David Horspool rightly puts it#Ross specifically is entirely dependent on his own horrible view of Elizabeth Woodville and her family as the basis of his analysis#but anyway. as Horrox points out later in the book:#''although earlier events [during Edward's reign] cannot be said to have caused the crisis they did have some bearing in how it developed'#namely Edward's legacy of forfeitures in the 1460s; manipulation of property descents; and fluctuating royal favour.#the most prominent and politically important of all of these were the manipulation of the Mowbray and Howard family fortunes#This is often used to enhance the unserious and ahistorical arguments of historians like Ross and Pollard that Edward doomed his son#But as Horrox points out: Edward's reign did not exist in a vacuum and needs to be analyzed by actual historical context.#from a broader perspective his actions were not especially transgressive as far as English kings were concerned#NO MONARCH (Edward III; Henry VII; etc) died with every single one of their nobles 100% content and supportive#they weren't living in Disney movies and there's no point holding Edward IV to fairytale standards that did not exist.#More importantly Horrox points out that Edward's actions (eg: the Mowbray and Howard cases) need to be put into actual perspective#They were not perceived as problems and did not cause problems during his own reign.#They did not cause problems after he died before Edward V arrived in London.#They only became problems after Richard decided to seize power and deliberately exploited them as bribes for political support#Had Richard decided to support his nephew or work with the Woodvilles - Edward's actions (@ the Mowbrays and Howards) would be irrelevant#(It's also worth pointing out that we don't know WHEN Richard decided to usurp. It if it was a more gradual desire then his depowering#of the Woodvilles by exploiting Mowbray & Howard discontent would not have not affected *Edward V's* ascension or prospects)#ie: the problem isn't that discontent existed with a few specific nobles (that was normal) the problem was how Richard took advantage of it#In theory this sort of thing would have been a potential threat for ANY heir to the throne whether they were a minor or an adult#In itself it's not really unique to Edward and it's silly when historians criticize him and him alone for it. It was more or less standard.#(if anything the fact that he was able to do them so successfully is an indication of his authority)#We come back to Horspool's point: 'Without one overriding factor' - Richard's initiative and actions - 'none of this could have happened.'#which is where this analysis of Horrox's comes in :)

@northsballad : “ there will be great festivities for his grace tonight. music, dancing, everything. “
in honor of his grace's tenth year upon the iron throne. a tourney, as well, that was little doubt going to be a splendid affair on it's own accord. lords and ladies, and landed knights flocking from all corners of the realm to attend the celebrations, whether they had the intent to participate in the melee, or joust, or merely spectate, or had merely wanted to take part in the more chivalric side to it ( a knight would then ask a lady for her favor, and win a dance, should he then emerge victorious. or a mere suit of armor. ) she supposed it was sporting enough, as long as blood was not shed. entertainment, if one had the stomach to watch. but tonight, a ball. she beams at the other, in welcome, taking a step forth until they stand side by side, " this eve and the next, i am sure, his grace has assured it shall be a grand affair, " no more then it deserves, she thinks, for such a momentous milestone. though tensions brewed beneath the surface, they had not yet bubbled over. he had done what none had done yet before save for in dorne, two years into his reign. not quite true peace, yet she did not believe it would be anything short of naive to expect such a thing when his grace now had sons. it had quieted, at the least, the past two years. she eyes the girl with renewed interest, smile turning into a full fledged grin, " then we shall be honored with your attendance ? and that of your lord father's household ? " her lord father was his grace's hand, there would be no question if lord eddard would attend. but she had heard naught of sansa, nor of her companion, the lady jeyne.

" i confess i most look forward to the dancing, " dancing, had always felt a little like flying to her, when one had a skilled dance partner. she cherished the quicker ones, most of all. to dance slowly with an unwed man as a maid, had always seemed to her as if it was bound to steer the conversation toward marriage. bearable, sometimes even enjoyable, but it had a way of shortening one's temper when it was all one heard on a particular evening. it served as fine practice when it came to the managing of her father's lords, despite. " and the feast, " the desserts, in particular. the princess had an overall fondness for sweet things, though she loved lemon cakes best of all. a heartbeat's width of time passes, and the girl sobers slightly as they walked. around them, the red keep had become alight with anticipation, a flurry of movement as servants went this way and that, making preparations for the evening's celebrations. preparing, in that, to welcome those few that would be staying in the red keep for the duration. “ what of you, my lady stark ? do you look forward to anything in particular ? “ the question is open, voice light, and more then slightly curious.

Sequel Talk
So, the basic outline of Heirs of the Throne is done.
However, goodest fur baby had a stroke over the past weekend and it was pretty scary. His vet has assured us that it was a very minor stroke, he's not in any pain, and with meds the clot can be dissolved and he can regain full control of his left side again.
YAY! But for most of Sunday and Monday I was a total wreck.
So, I finished the basic outline today and the Silver Viking gave me some fab ideas that I'm so excited about. But I had this great idea where I really wanted to switch first person POV to Miraak to create this really interesting dichotomy. Unfortunately, Miraak is a man of few words, even in his own head. Now I have to write it in third person or his chapters will be way too short.
Hopefully I'll get it sorted out soon so I can get the first chapter posted.

"Magic always comes at a cost. In some fantasy books, those consequences are lethal. When life-saving magic use threatens the user’s life, it raises the stakes of helping others. These fantasy books ask, “What would you risk for your power?”
Fantasy books where magic use is deadly are fascinating. They come from a long tradition in myth and storytelling where sacrifices are given to perform important feats. Oftentimes, these sacrifices are connected to gods or spirits, but generally, there is an equivalent exchange made for power. So, the bigger the power, the bigger the price.
When writing about the literary tradition of making deals with devils, I looked into the deadly bargaining characters have done over the years. Giving up a life or an afterlife for magic is always a dangerous choice to make. However, sometimes the risk is worth the reward. An endangered character risks dying or giving up their life in the future for magic that can immediately help them. After all, when power comes at a cost, it’s worth paying every time if you live to see another day."
