2022 Fanfic Meme
Was pleasantly surprised to be tagged by @wordsofawanderingsoul, so cheers to that!
Word Count for the year: 72,910
Number of stories posted to Ao3: 5 this year, 8 overall
Pairings written for:
Phoenix Wright/Hershel Layton
Karliah/Female Dragonborn
Fandoms I wrote for:
Ace Attorney
Professor Layton
Elder Scrolls V (Skyrim)
Batman
Ghostbusters
Most popular story: “Jason Todd...Ghostbuster?” with a total of 366 kudos and 4854 hits! (Though I will admit, I was hit with a kudos bot last year, so my kudos are skewed unfortunately)
Story I’m most proud of: Again, “Jason Todd...Ghostbuster?” has to be the one I’m most proud of because it’s my longest one with almost 50k words and I’m not even half-way through what I have planned!
Funniest: It’s a toss up between “What Do Bees Make?” and “More Than Meets the Eye.” WDBM? was a crack fic I wrote at midnight because I love the ‘What do bees make? Honey? Yes, Dear?’ gag. MTMTE is also funny because I love writing Karliah just growing increasingly exasperated at the stupid and weird things about Duna (my Dragonborn for the fic).
Saddest: "To Live Another Life,” hands down. I wrote this after a friend mentioned how if you go back to the prison cell you start off in with the Alternate Start Skyrim mod, there’s a skeleton in the bed, kinda implying you had died and were reincarnated into your current character. Legit teared up when I wrote it. (I was also (lovingly) shamed by my friend who beta’d it because I wrote the draft in Comic Sans)
Least Popular: “More Than Meets the Eye,” but I expected it because it’s an OC story. However, I am pleased to see I have some subscribers for it! Also, funny thing to note. One of my friends had actually read this fic before I told them I wrote fanfiction.
Most Cringe-worthy: I try to be proud of what I wrote, so I’m gonna take a page out of wordsofawanderingsoul’s book and go with fics that were out of my comfort zone. “To Live Another Life” was definitely something that was new territory because I had never written second-person POV before. It was a fun exercise, and I’m happy with how it turned out.
Favorite opening line(s): From “What Do Bees Make?” “They’re totally into each other.”
“I don’t think they are.”
“Apollo, I can literally hear the affection in their voices,” Athena deadpanned as she pointed to her ear. “Plus, you still can’t accept the fact that Klavier has been flirting with you since day one, so I'm taking your opinion with a grain of salt right now.”
Favorite Closing line(s): Also from “What Do Bees Make?” Neither of the two men said anything for a few seconds, both content to keep their faces hidden.
“Well, Phoenix, I believe that, as some of my students would say, we’ve been ‘had,’” the Professor sighed.
Phoenix groaned in agreement before he slowly removed his hands from his face.
“Okay, you got us.” He moved back to the couch and grabbed Layton’s hand. “Hershel and I are dating.”
Top scenes from anywhere I would choose to have illustrated:
Jason’s locker from ch 17 of “Jason Todd...Ghostbuster?
Or the meeting with a certain character in the same chapter ;)
Honestly, I’d die and go to Heaven if I could have any scene illustrated from that fic.
Karliah patching up the Dragonborn in the first chapter of MTMTE
Athena, Luke, and Apollo gossiping about Phoenix’s and Hershel’s relationship in “What Do Bees Make?”
Stories I haven’t yet written, but intend to:
Vignettes for Jason Todd...Ghostbuster?
“The Story of Sir Blue Knight and Sir Top Hat”
A one-shot based off this headcanon I made a while back
It would also serve as a story that would branch into a sequel of “I Beg Your Pardon?”, a post PLvsPW fic detailing all the craziness that’s Phoenix’s life. (If I ever decide to get my shit together and wrote more of it).
Some stories continuing after “More Than Meets the Eye” is finished.
“See No Evil, Speak No Evil”
A Daredevil/Batman: Under the Red Hood (comic) crossover fic
Basic plot summary: Jason settles down in Hell’s Kitchen after his confrontation with Batman ended with his throat getting slit by a batarang and leaving him unable to speak. He ends up meeting Matt Murdock at a church and has an enlightening encounter with the man.
Fic-writing goals for 2023:
Continue “I Beg Your Pardon?”
Attempt to get 2/3 of the way through “Jason Todd...Ghostbuster?”
If I could finish it, I’d be over the freaking moon
Finish up “More Than Meets the Eye”
I’ll throw down some writers I follow, whether they chose to do it or not is up to them.
Hey @puddlesandparkinglots @impyssadobsessions @xysidhequeen! I choose you!

A Jikook Guide to RunBTS: 66-80
Things in this batch start out a little slow, KM-wise, but seriously pick up around the Toronto episodes. It features the episodes where both RM and Jin ask if JK and JM are a couple, so it includes the giggly hand-push game that helped make me a jikook believer!
As usual, let me know if I’ve missed anything or should take another look at something. :)
Ep 66 "BTS in a Comic Book Cafe Part 1" (Ep: 2 / KM: 1)
The one that I can’t help but feel would be more fun if I was more familiar with the comics involved, but the guys make it cute anyway
3:08 - This is a little hard to see because they use weird angles and cuts, but JK sings a piece of a theme song and JM catches his eye and sings with him.
9:23 - JK leans in over JM's shoulder to see how many people are on the comic book page
10:18 - JM does the same when it's JK's turn
BEHIND 10:29 - JM jokes around with JK and does the playful chest tap thing
Ep 67 "BTS in a Comic Book Cafe Part 2" (Ep: 3 / KM: 1)
None
BEHIND 7:28 - JM asks JK if there's a comic book he wants and says he'll buy it for him if so
Ep 68 "Heart Pang" (Ep: 1 / KM: 0)
The one where I can't for the life of me understand the board game they are playing
None.
Ep 69 "BTS in Toronto Part 1" (Ep: 4 / KM: 5)
The Toronto one where Jikook wear matching denim shirts while going to Niagara Falls, getting lunch, and playing games
2:36 - RM says there are certain people who will struggle with the wake up challenge. JK and JM readily seem to admit it's them.
6:29 - JM hangs back (to walk with JK?) when the rest of the group starts heading for the Falls.
8:06 - There's a "teleporting" moment where Jin is in between JM and JK, then the camera cuts away, then it comes back and jikook are next to each other. They stay next to each other as they walk on.
9:52 - You can see jikook interacting in the background.
12:25 - JM takes a photo of JK and gets him to giggle, then they huddle to look at the pic.
13:56 - JM puts his arm around JK and takes a selca in the background, causing RM to ask "what, are you a couple or something? Both wearing denim shirts?" He says it fairly seriously for a line that seems like it's supposed to be a joke and they don't laugh or say anything in response - it looks like JM looks away and flips his hair while JK shifts and awkwardly rubs his forehead. You can also see a quiet exchange after between RM and JM where RM says no to something, then nods at JK. Unclear if it's related, but including it just in case.
15:25 - JK doesnn't try to distract JM while he did the staring contest like he did with Hobi. When Jimin passes, JK is the only one to clap.
18:04 - Quick moment where you can see JK start to rub the arm of JM's shirt before the camera cuts away.
18:50 - JM laughs and touches JK's chest after JK loses the rocks paper scissor game, too.
19:53 - When the other five walk away and JK is doing something with his mic, we don't see where JM is.
22:02 - JK appears to help JM with something with his camera in the foreground.
BEHIND 4:12 - After JHope scolds JK for letting Suga pour everyone's water, JK goes to pour JM some water, then puts the pitcher down. JM seemingly tries to help him out by saying it's a new trend for the oldest to pour water.
Ep 70 "BTS in Toronto Part 2" (Ep: 3 / KM: 5)
The Toronto one where the guys go shopping, pick beds, and play games
1:15 - JK slows down to walk side by side with JM.
2:00 - When JK messes up the game he was confident he'd win, JK laughs and playfully shoves at his chest.
7:23 - When JK loses a game and has to buy the others hoodies, JM sneaks a hat into the pile while JK has his back turned. RM rats him out.
8:01 - JM quietly puts the hat back in the pile, then walks over and hugs JK.
8:40 - JK walks over to Jimin to show him something (sunglasses he wanted?).
20:30 - When they're all joking around about whether they can fit four people on a bed, JK moves JM into an L-shape and then lays down nested with him.
BEHIND 0:09 - JK calls out "Jimin-ssi!" and tosses JM that hat he bought him.
4:49 - When the guys are all stretching and JM is in an inconvenient place, JK calls him "Jimin-ssi" again, essentially feels up his calf, and then pushes his upper thigh, all purportedly to get him to move over.
5:28 - JK kneels down behind JM, who's on all fours, and holds his hips to correct his position (I am literally just describing what happens in the clip, but I kind of feel like I'm writing porn, here...). JK then picks Jimin up to move him over a bit. Both giggle as JK starts to stand up and then the camera cuts away. I can't even begin to think what exercising looks like for these two when there aren't cameras on them...
6:55 - JK reads out the words on the Jimin shirt they're all wearing, which happen to be, "BTS Park Jimin, I love you! I root for you! I'm ARMY!" with a huge grin on his face. Jimin laughs - no one else does - and then jokes that they should wear the shirts back to Korea, prompting JK to tell him "bye!" and wave while giggling.
7:37 - Jimin shows the parts of the shirt design he would change by poking JK's chest, and then JK and JM share a fairly steamy look until RM interrupts.
7:52 - JK folds up the shirt so JM's face looks weird and Jimin points to him doing it and laughs. No one else does. Man, these two were really in their own world this whole Toronto trip, weren't they?
8:02 - JM tries to give JK some advice on the game he's about to play. Before starting, JK starts what seems like it's going to be a silly pose, but ends up being him dragging his fingers down his face, neck, and chest. Sadly for JK, JM wasn't looking. Happily for us, we can look as much as we want.
8:18 - When JM wins a game, JK claps for him. You can probably guess by now that he's the only one who does.
10:09 - JM steals a piece of steak, then JK does some cross-cut teleporting to come over and sink down into a chair next to him. JM overdoes making his eyes look big and innocent (perhaps hoping to get caught and scolded?).
10:35 - JM makes Jin move when he takes JM's seat next to JK I feel like just the Behind for this episode needs it's own jikook rating! And most of it is watching JK lead the guys in a workout. If you're going to watch just one Run Behind, consider making it this one!
Ep 71 "BTS in Toronto Part 3" (Ep: 3 / KM: 3)
The Toronto one where the guys have dinner, have breakfast, and play games
14:28 - Maybe nothing, but just to note it - in this and the next shot, you can see JM heading towards where JK is lying back on the couch after losing a game, then there's an abrupt cut and everyone is in a totally different position.
29:20 - JK tells JM the "super-pancake" he made is for him since he has to do the penalties.
BEHIND 6:59 - JM says that he thinks JK will want to eat and calls out for him.
Ep 72 "BTS and Mafia" (Ep: 3 / KM: 2)
The one in which we learn that BTS is so terrible at the Mafia game that it almost comes back around to being impressive
3:10 - When Jin says JK is suspicious because he isn't talking, JM defends him, saying "you know he doesn't talk much."
8:34 - JM seems to direct his appeal to be spared to JK.
18:16 - JK compliments how well Jimin is doing at the game.
20:13 - After Jimin says he's ARMY, JK asks, "do you like me that much?" Then there's a quick cut and Jin is doing a Jim Halpert face at the camera.
28:03 - Confusing maybe-moment - let me know if it's clearer to anyone else! - but after JH is sending finger heart guns, JM points gun fingers directly at JK for no apparent reason.
BEHIND 2:39 - Before they start playing, JK predicts that JM and Jin will be good at the game.
Eps 73-76 “Run BTS Drama Parts 1-4″ (n/a)
The ones where BTS spend four episodes making a “comedic” skit
01:09 - After JK explains that he had a wisdom tooth taken out, Jimin adds the info that they had to take out the whole root. 09:10 - Even though V is the "director" of Jimin's scene, JK speaks up and takes over the role, saying that directors use informal language and repeating twice in informal language "Jimin, let's go!" He continues speaking informally when Jimin messes up and JK scolds him. 11:40 - When it's JK's turn to deliver a line and he gets nervous about remembering it, JM reads it out loud for him. He also says as soon as JK delivers the line that he did the best job and adds to Hobi, "he doesn't get embarassed, I told you." 16:26 - It's a little hard to see for sure, but it looks like Jimin votes for JK when it's time to choose who should be the skit's director. I'm going to be totally honest with you guys - I didn't rewatch these episodes past this. I first saw it months ago and remember being disappointed and fairly bored through most of it past the first half of the first episode - I don't find the skit funny and the behind-the-scenes stuff isn't amusing enough to make a four-part episode about. I’m sure there are others who completely disagree with me and no judgment if you don't share my opinion! But I'm doing this guide for fun and I don't want to spend two hours rewatching them.
I don't recall a ton of jikook beyond the above - I think there's a moment in part 3 where JK is getting tired and Jimin offers to take over slating for him. So, anyone who is a fan and knows / finds more jikook moments, please let me know and I will update this guide to reflect that. Otherwise, let's happily move along. :)
Ep 77 “Food Guest Part 1″ (Ep: 4 / KM: 5)
The weirdly-named ones that are prob better translated as "food connoisseurs" but the specifics of the foods theme don't really matter because JIKOOK
07:41 - When Jin says JK and JM will be competing in a palm-push game, JM says he's already lost (because JK is strong).
07:55 - I'm fairly certain that, if you're a jikook-er, you've seen this moment. It's so unabashedly flirty a description can't really do it justice. JK and JM are supposed to be playing a game where they put their palms together and shove to see who can make the other lose their balance. JM shoves lightly at JK's chest before they even start the game, then both start giggling. Still giggly, JM asks if JK's ready and JK says he is. JM pushes at JK's palms and JK just swings his arms back as they look at each other and smile. Jin interrupts to ask, "are you a dating couple?" (that's the most direct translation - V app translation is "are you two together?"). JK and JM both laugh, the latter so hard that he spins around, thus losing the game.
17:08 - JK is staring so intently at Jimin on his knees with a blow-pen in his mouth that he completely misses RM trying to give him a high five. Jin has to call for JK to please respond to RM before JK looks away and returns the high five, laughing and apologizing. He looks back immediately after.
BEHIND 0:58 - JK gives JM a shoulder massage while holding his chest as JM makes satisfied noises. I've seen this clip in compilations before, but hadn't realized it was also from this episode. It's really the gift that keeps on giving!
4:29 - Just prior to the above palm-push game, JM reaches out to do something to JK's sleeve (I think?). The camera cuts before we see clearly.
4:31 - Slightly different angle of JM and JK giggling at the start of the palm-push game.
7:11 - Reveals that RM actually tried to high five JK and was ignored TWICE before Jin called JK's attention away from JM on his knees with a blow-pen in his mouth.
Ep 78 “Food Guest Part 2″ (Ep: 3 / KM: 3)
15:00 - JK jokingly asks what the answer is and Jimin giggles at him as the on-screen text says, "how adorable." Unsurprisingly, the others are less enamored. (JK's biggest fans = 1. Jimin 2. Run BTS on-screen text writers)
BEHIND 9:56 - JK watches JM dance playfully, then wiggles his own hips, seeming to want JM's attention. Jimin smiles and starts to say something that gets cut off.
10:03 - JK films JM as JM dances and smiles while looking into the camera. Jimin is doing silly dance, but JK zooms in on his joyful face. He quickly licks his lips as he watches.

20-25!
Aaah thank you!!!
20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)
So, one thing I usually want to ramble about (and don’t often get to lol) is relationship development, or a lot of times, portraying that development in a very short piece (like a lot of my oneshots.)
I don’t often have time for multichapter things (and as I type, have at least three in the works that need me to finish their next chapters lol), so being able to show like...stable love and care and comfort between two characters that is realistic in like 1,000 to 2,000 and some words is both a challenge and goal for me.
I love slow burn and fics with a lot of build up, but my bread and butter is writing little snapshots into moments, and in order for those to work, I have to be able to pull the reader in right away with good characterization, interesting plot, and what I can only refer to as a sense of ‘always’/stability: in other words, most things in the story come off as well-established, even if the reader isn’t getting chapters and chapters of build up about it. They can ‘feel’ in what’s written there that what I’m telling them about these characters with their relationship, the love that’s there, has ‘always’ been there, or been there for a very long time by the time we, as readers, get to see it via the fic.
It’s an exercise in trust as much as anything else between me and my readers too, and it makes my day any time I get comments that let me know I’ve succeeded in this.
21. What other medium do you think your story would work well as? (film, webcomic, animated series?)
Tbh, I’ve actually got a few fic ideas I haven’t written purely because they’d probably work better as a comic (problem with that: I can’t draw well enough to make it happen in that format.) So I think I would lean comic/graphic novel for a lot of my works, though there are a few I’d love to see filmed too, in a universe where that could happen lol!
22. Do you reread your old works? How do you feel about them?
I do! (often because that’s how I catch my typos lol.) Most of the stuff I’ve written in the past 3 years or so, I’m chill with. Anything older...is a little cringe if only because I can see spots where I could have written something better or differently. Or it’s for a fandom I don’t write for anymore, and I’m embarrassed of it lol (see my Sherlock and Dr. Who thing...or don’t, is probably better.)
23. What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?
I’ve had a few things rattling around, that I’ve actually started working on now with some encouragement from one of the Discord servers I’m in. A Sandman (the Gaiman graphic novel) AU for Queen, and what I’m calling the Returned AU, also for Queen.
For the Returned, it’s essentially what it says on the tin: people who’ve died (like Freddie, Jim, and other various friends/family) come back to life, at the age they were happiest/liked the way they looked most/etc. They aren’t exactly zombies, but it is discovered that they do age incredibly slowly after “coming back” and are functionally immortal (which is in turns cool and concerning for them.) I have a whole thing about how Queen reforms and reintegrates, to have John back onstage, keeping Adam but also having him and Freddie share the role of singer (with so much playful catty bantering, as to be expected with two powerhouse gays.) Not to mention how those who have come back react to a world that is different from the one they left, and that is both better and scarier in some pretty huge ways.
It’s a v big topic, with so much within it, that I’ve always put it off as Too Much, but I’ve since found out there’s interest from folks in ideas like this, so I’m hoping to make it happen someday, along with the Sandman AU (explanation for that one: I love that graphic novel series, I love Queen, and I can see exactly which of the Endless each band member should be, plus who else should fill out the rest of the Endless, since there are seven of them but only four band members in the original Queen line up, as well as filling the roles of other key characters from the series.)
In particular, I leave you with the idea of Roger as Death. For example, this panel:
But put Roger in there, and tell me it isn’t perfect lol.
24. Would you say your writing has changed over time?
Oh definitely! I think I’ve improved in form and in general, and I’ve also experimented more with what I write, and how (I used to be all horror and angst, it’s nice to reside in the softer part of things more often now, lol.) I like where I am now, but I’d be a fool if I didn’t admit that I’m sure my writing will likely change again as I get older, and have different and new life experiences. It’ll be interesting to see where it goes in the future!
25. What part of writing is the most fun?
That’s a three-way tie between A. having a really good idea that flows easily and quickly, B. that afterglow when a piece is finished, and C. finding out via comments, kudos, etc., that my writing made someone happy or that they really enjoyed it. I never have enough time to reply to the comments I get on AO3, but every single one and every kudos email I get makes my day!
#text and photo post#ask box things#ajlkfd sorry this took me ages to finish typing#I got caught in a few WIPs as I was answering these#I loved all of these though thank u for asking!!#apineappleheart

The Hiatus
I’ve been dreading the idea of writing this, but the fact that I am at all means that I’m coming out of my funk and am looking onward towards moving ahead, and hopefully forward, once again with this project in the future. I’m afraid I’ve got a lot of explaining to do. Wouldn’t you know it? Life got in the way again.
It seems that every new Writing Season, something always happens to me to shift things around and make it near-impossible towards writing Mega Man X. I’ve been mulling over how to talk about all of this without getting too personal on an MMX blog. But the fact is that what happened to me is very personal. And very complicated. So I’m gonna just go for it, while keeping it in simplest terms.
I broke up with my girlfriend last month. Which means I had to move out...
I can say that with dry eyes now, and without a heavy heart. It was a smooth break. Very mutual. We both knew it needed to happen, because we weren’t happy at all. (Always doing our own thing, making separate plans... etc. etc. etc.)
But back to this.
I recall back in November I had posted a Writing Exercise - What X Remembers, in an attempt to kick-start my motivation for this project. Needless to say, it didn’t work. I can tell you right now that I wasn’t exactly busy. I was burnt out.
Yes, I’ve been wanting and wanting to start this thing, but in the planning phases, I’ve also been afraid of it. Because I don’t want to mess this up. Or it’s too confusing, or disjointed. And I know how I get. I harp and harp on things until it’s perfect, or feels good enough to present. And... frankly, I was in a position where things were so bad at home, that I just wanted to spend time with her to keep everyone happy.
I would also take advantage of ‘Me-Time Monday’ as I used to call it when she’d be out doing her own thing. Except my creative outlet for those days would be working on music, which is my first passion. I’ve taken on a massive project of adding vocals to a lot of old music I had written, and even now I’m maybe half-way through that. And there were definitely certain Mondays that I wasn’t even in the mood for music... I certainly wasn’t in the mood for X.
I was depressed... She was depressed... But why?
Well... this blog, isn’t exactly about that. But what I can tell you is that we were just going through this mundane routine every day. Even our weekends became routine. And neither of us were fun to be around any more. Even upon realizing it and trying to do different things. ‘Go out on a date, Dummy!’ That’s what I would tell myself. But even nice events didn’t work. She’d complain about being tired, or full or we wouldn’t talk at all. That... was the extent of our interactions. Outside of that, we’d just watch our shows, which would entertain us, and make us laugh. We’d hold hands and stuff, sometimes. But even then... it didn’t really feel romantic. As one friend put it best, “It sounds like a friendship...”
And we both realized that last month.
So you could say that from November-February, I had slowly been working at getting my motivation toward this project back up. Despite my daily toils, I was driven to bring myself to do the things that make me happy. I had even reread most of the Writing Diaries, all the way up to Season V again, which took me down a nice bit of Nostalgia Road. Reading about the Process of this Project is just as fun as reading the actual episodes for me. It’s the Journey, not the Destination, after all.
But like I said, then February happened and we just imploded. Everything immediately broke down. My living space, my comfort zone.. where I was going to be!! I didn’t know what to do.
In week 1 I took out the time to hang out with all of my closest friends. I told everyone who needed to know first.
In week 2, I started seriously looking for places. And that was equally exciting as it was exhausting. However, I did find one thing that wouldn’t be ready for the next 2 months! And that also freaked me out. Now I had a pseudo-time table on my hands, but it was a little too long.
In week 3, I cracked. We absolutely got into a fight in our shared space. Things were so smooth as friends and roommates. We had still shared our King Size Bed, and kept it completely civil, since nothing romantic was happening in the bedroom anyway... But, at some point, some Social Media Drama occurred and I actually started acting like an Ex. It was becoming very clear to me that living together any longer was going to destroy my Mental Health. So I made the choice to get out of there, sooner than anticipated. That Friday, I put a bag together and stayed at my parent’s house.
The original plan was to ride this out as long as possible and move into the 2nd Bedroom while I start to leisurely pack, as I keep looking for places. But instead, all this drama accelerated my schedule and forced me out of that house. That weekend, I came back to grab the rest of my clothes and relocate my TV back to my Parent’s house... Which takes me to week 4.
In week 4, I focused on helping my brother with an After-school play. I changed my work hours for him and everything, but on top of that, I had an unexpected interview which could’ve changed everything!!! You see, I’ve been looking for better jobs at the same time as looking for new places. And that’s what made this so stressful. That’s even partially what caused all this drama, because one night I tried complaining about it to her, and she didn’t really seem to care much. We were acting like exes to each other, and I really couldn’t handle it. So once we got into a fight, that was the wake up call. We’re not together anymore. We can’t do this any more! Literally. It was time to get out of there and move on. Well, the job interview wasn’t in the cards... but it’s for the best, because it would’ve made this new place that I’ve been hoping for, not make sense any more. That weekend, I got together all of my books/movies/games/comics, electronics, pictures, etc. etc. while she had put together boxes of the kitchenware I get to take. By Sunday Night, basically all of my stuff was out of there. I couldn’t believe it. It was very therapeutic and bittersweet.
This takes us to Week 5 - last week. The commotion has slowed down to an abrupt halt. I’ve been very tired. Technically I have all the time in the world for MMX now, but I’m just not there yet. And I probably won’t be for another month. And I say that now, because I’m literally in between places. All of my stuff is in boxes at my Parent’s house, but this other place that I saw is in the process of coming through. Their time table accelerated a little bit. I got news yesterday that the place has been painted, and that new carpets will be installed on 3/23. As I am basically move-in ready, but also really want this to be the place, I worked with my new Landlord and asked him if I can start to leave boxes this weekend.
And that’s what I did today. Today I left the first installation of boxes into that house’s basement. It will be the new location I call my home, and the best part about it is that it’s only 5 minutes from Work. That’s HUGE. [But that too is temporary, as I still need a better job.]. One day at a time though, right?
This is primarily the reason why I’m writing today. I feel that the brunt of this Transition Period has reached it’s Apex, and from here, it’s gonna be pretty smooth sailing into the next place, as I become acquainted with my New Normal of 2020.
I’m also writing, because admittedly, I have been thinking about MMX6 again, and rather than catch up with the rest of the diaries, I just read the last one. Where I actually regressed into plot points again and still couldn’t answer certain questions, like what those stupid teleport portals are. I mean, how much of an explanation do I really need? It’s Mega Science!
I’ll be honest. I could start tomorrow, and I’d probably feel pretty good about it, until I hit my first slump. Which will most likely be the Central Museum stage. And then I won’t want to do anything.
No, my heart’s just not in it yet. I don’t want to start MMX6 on my laptop. I want to be fully set up and Comfortable in my New Place when I start Season VI properly. The silver lining is that I have all the time in the world for this and my music, now. And I’ll have to feel out that situation too, because I desperately want to do both. And that’s part of the conflict too. Both projects literally interfere with each other, because I only have enough time and energy for one or the other on any given night.
Keep in mind, once I have my own place, everything’s on me. That’s cooking, dishes, laundry and of course self-care, right? So that involves the necessary shower, and of course entertaining yourself. And that means yes, actually pulling myself away from my hobbies that I tend to wrap myself in so much.
I’m not blaming this project for losing my girl, or my music. Hell, I’m not even blaming myself. We just weren’t a good fit for each other, but we sure tried to be. For 5 Years! There was a lot of good in those 5 years too. But she changed a lot. Me too. But her, more... In a less fun way. Very easy for me to say, of course.
These things happen. People change. And we truly made the healthiest choice to end it when we did. It was really just a logical conversation about what isn’t working, and both of us literally agreeing that this doesn’t make sense any more. My friend last night put it best. “I think your relationship just ran its course. You both saw it through to a complete end, and it was really good that you chose to end it when you did, because neither of you were happy any more...”
And there it is. I suppose I’m ending this on that note. One day I’ll be ready for MMX6 again. But today is not that day. And instead, I’ll be playing the MMZ/ZX Legacy Collection in the meantime. =P. And no. Don’t get any ideas. I have NO intention of writing an MMZ Anime.

relationship status:
at the moment i’m single! and while being in a relationship sounds brilliant, the last two relationships i was involved in? didn’t work out to say the least, lucky i’m still young
favourite colour:
it’s been emerald green for the longest time but orange seems to be dethroning it at a steady pace
lipstick or chapstick:
i haven’t used chapstick since i was six but i probably should use it again, water is my substitute rn fdghdgh - and i haven’t ever used lipstick in any capacity? so i’d have to go with the former
last song i listened to:
the space traveller’s lullaby | kamasi washington - i’m trying to get through his second album rn (i left off on the second disk yesterday) and while everything he makes is undeniably amazing, it’s? a three hour album? i don’t have the attention span for his spiritual jazz, as great as it is
last movie:
monsters inc is playing on the television right now, i’ll go with that! the animation aged kinda badly but it’s still such a fun movie! sidenote: james p. sullivan? a childhood crush, so this gives me memories
top 3 tv shows/podcasts/comics:
i rarely, if ever, venture into these forms of media but! if i had to answer, i’d say;
unbreakable kimmy schmidt / parks & recreation / luke cage
taz / mbmbam (i havent like. watched a full episode of either but they seem cool,)
tf idw / …………. yeah that’s it, i’ve never read anything else. probably should!

----------------------------------
@alyonian
color(s): light colors are always nice and pleasant, though anything peachy and sandy are the best! orange (specially pastel orange) is like. the best thing
last band t-shirt i bought: usually merchandising is very expensive and i dont have the money to accommodate that, but like. i do recall having a wiggles shirt when i was five. i wore it all the time, shjdjgsksd im sure that counts
last band i saw live: i almost went to splendor in the grass last year with family, which wasn't only cool since i’ve never been out of the state since i immigrated - the festival was in queensland, which is around a two hour flight from victoria - but the lineup was pretty fuckin lit too! the xx, haim, peking duk, tash sultana, future islands, vallis alps, a.b original,, i was p excited! unfortunately my uncle fell ill and so they had to give the tickets to extended family :( otherwise, i haven't been to a single concert in my life
last song i listened to: street fighter mas | kamasi washington - up to this song on the album and i really fuckin dig this! also the video is hypnotizing
last movie i watched: monsters inc is about to finish and up next is monsters university! which like…. honestly, this is an extremely unpopular opinion but, i like it just as much as the original? my opinion might be skewed because i’m a monster [hugger], but i like everything abt the movie! except for the finale of the scare games and the last five minutes of the movie, both were just. dreadful.
last three tv shows i watched: if aggretsuko counts that’s the last series i watched of my own volition, which is a miracle in itself considering that’s legit only the second anime i’ve watched to completion (the first being shirokuma cafe, which i probably need to re-watch). otherwise, the last two shows i had beared witness to were thirteen reasons why and queer eye bc my cousin put them on! that first show i could completely do without but queer eye is iconique
last 3 characters i identified with: grimlock (legit. all of them), urdnot grunt (mass effect) and vector the crocodile (sth), i’m not sure what this says about me other than Big
book(s) i’m currently reading: i’m reading ‘maus’ by art spiegelman at the moment, for the third time i believe? i believe my classmates are supposed to be writing an essay on this next term and shit, this novel is heartbreaking, i haven't been this emotional when reading a book than… ever, really. it’s a recommendation of the highest caliber

11, 15 and 30?
11. describe your ideal day
I’d wake up at a reasonable time (maybe around 9), and not feel tired or groggy (that would be rare). I’d have my own home (at the very least, I wouldn’t be living with my parents), and I’d be productive and get stuff done at a reasonable pace. I’d exercise, go outside, do some casual shopping. Eat out at someplace nice with some friends or family. Go see a movie or go somewhere fun. Then I’d go home and go to sleep at a reasonable time. Alternatively, a day that I would also like would be one where I went on a trip somewhere cool (like Cars Land or something, haha).
15. five most influential books over your lifetime.
Hmm, idk if these are influential per se, but books I like (these are in no particular order because I suck at ordering things):
1. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Probably one of my favorite books, because it’s honestly so beautiful, in terms of the language (I like the author’s style), as well as how the author portrays this young girl’s life during the WWII Germany. It’s very beautiful, but also quite sad (I tore up during the ending). I wrote a review on it for a class.
2. As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner. I just wrote an essay on it for school a couple weeks ago. Again, I love Faulkner’s style of writing, and some of the topics in this book were very interesting. One passage in particular almost made me cry.
3. 1984 and A Brave New World (more so the latter). The ideas they discuss are fascinating.
4. Harry Potter. I grew up with these books, so some of their ideas and topics find their way into my original stories.
5. The Great Gatsby. I found the themes it discussed very interesting, especially in regards to Gatsby himself. (Also wrote an essay for it).
(Also Holden in The Catcher in the Rye intrigues me as a character).
30. pick one of your favorite quotes
(I already answered this so I’m just gonna copy it here)
OH, in addition to this, I just wanna say that one of my favorite poems is Dylan Thomas’ “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night.” There’s probably some good Shakespeare lines I like too.
Gah, I swear I have some good ones but I forget what they are. The only one I can remember off the top of my head is, “Everything was beautiful, and nothing hurt” from Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five (I didn’t care for the book itself, but I liked that line). I also like “Non timebo mala” which is Latin for “I fear no evil”, which is inscribed on the Colt in the show Supernatural. If I ever got a tattoo, I’d want it to be that line. Idk, it just gives me strength when I hear it.
My senior quote was actually, “Behind this mask there is more than just flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea… and ideas are bulletproof” from V for Vendetta, because I like that movie (haven’t read the comics). I don’t like it as much anymore, but it’s a cool line.

Introduction
Introduction
My name is William Jackson, this is my first year at University. I was born in Blackpool, and raised by a good mother, father and brother growing up and living in pubs and hotels my father has owned since I was born.
Before going to university I spent 3 years of college studying art and design, learning lots of new things in the course, drawing, printing, photoshop and ceramics. Now I am now at university, I’ve be learning new art techniques and skills to become a better artist in the future.
Digital Magazine Designs
Digital Magazine Designs
In the start of my first year at university, I made a couple of digital magazine designs in one or two projects.
One magazine was about my trip to Keswick with all of the classmates that are in the same course that I am.
The other magazine was about how the pyramids of Egypt were built in ancient Egypt.
I did the magazine designs by creating some drawings of my own (comic characters and artefacts), some images I’ve taking from the internet or taking photos from places I’ve been or seen to. I made these magazines in that kind of mixture, because I enjoy reading books since I was a little boy and I have been into comics since I was 10 or 12 years old.
What I hope to do next year is make some more magazine/comic designs and make better written work in them.

My Own Comic Designs
My Own Comic Designs
During my spare time in college and in university, I’ve been working on comic designs of my own.
The other year at college, I did a small comic strip based on the classic novel “Moby Dick”. How I did the work, was in a mixed media set of pen, pencil, dry-point printing (etching) and photoshop (on the computer) each art material I did them in order with one picture after the other with another mixture of cartridge paper, parcel paper and sugar paper to get a little historic effect in the artwork, they work really well.
The first comic design I’ve made of my own is based on the game trailer Assassin’s Creed Rogue, and the Second comic I’ve made is based from the movie Armageddon. The name of the comics are called “the hunter” it is short story about man walking through a dark background killing his fellow knights and friends in his path, the second comic is called “Armageddon” a story about how an asteroid had crashed into the earth during the time of the dinosaurs.
I did the comic design in drawing, photoshop and indesign, to make it into a successful comic design. I’m already working in third comic design and more after that.
That is something I’m wanting to do in the future, to be a comic artist.

Learning How to Make a Video
Learning How to Make a Video
During my first year at, there were a couple projects that were in video designs. Planning the video is one thing, making the video is another thing.
One video was a stop-animation of a pack of Haribos curling into a ball, then a phoenix emerges in the centre and flies away.
The other was working with one of classmates and partner Lily of a short thriller film of ourselves in old book shop, where Lily walking around the shelves for a book, till I attack and kill her with a book in hand, then later on a friend of mine is walking around town till he finds Lily’s body by the water fountain.
The videos didn’t go exactly the way I wanted them to be in, but I did my best I can in them. The problem was, in the project I had use these computer apps Premiere Pro and After Effects, and learning how to use these apps was really difficult, because I have used them before. What I’m planning to do next year is learn more of how to use these apps to make some videos and how to get some sound effect in, and for some of my own artwork, because I think it might come in handy and I have a friend who could teach me some things in creating videos.
When it comes to computers, create art in them is more difficult than drawing them in paper.

Workshop Designs
Workshop Designs
In the first term my group and I go into some workshop to learn new things for illustration and graphic design, text-style, print-making, wood-making, photography and metal-making.
I enjoyed going to them. The workshop were in six sets...
Wood
Metal
Photography
Print
Silkscreen
Embroidery
Here is what I enjoyed most is...
1. Metal- Going to the metal workshop was the first time I’ve ever been in any art course I been to, what I made in there was a metal sculpture of a dragon and took home as a Christmas present for my brother, he loved that a lot. I haven’t done any sculpting since I was thirteen, I use to do small paper sculptures dinosaurs and thunderbirds in my spare time when I was in secondary school.
2. Photography- Going to photography was the first workshop my group and I went to, so using a camera and (if we wanted to) using Lightroom for adjustments was another thing I’m familiar with and of course there is the darkroom I’m familiar with, I did some of these in a few projects when I in college. The darkroom photos I enjoyed the most, because there is some mystery of the object is without any detail or colour. I also learned how to use ultraviolet photography which was fun do to, I would like to do that again next year.
3. Print- Doing some prints is very familiar, when I was in college I did lots of printing making (lino-printing and Dry-point printing/etching). Now at university I did some more of that and learnt how to do etching on metal plates, which I kind of enjoyed doing, because I used other materials to get some shading or tonal effect, when I the plate printed it a good texture and composition.
Next year I’m planning more of these prints for one or two of my own comic designs.
4. Wood- I made wood before, when I was in secondary school, so wood-making is very familiar as well, the fun bit was making a couple of business card-holders for my brother and my dad, then doing some small drawings on them. They were both happy for what I made when I gave it to them on Christmas.
5. Silkscreen- Learning how to use silkscreen printing is different than lino-printing or dry-pointing printing (etching), but it was very interesting, because I could a couple of colours in one print but I think I can put in some more colours in other prints with some more learning.
6. Embroidery- Using the sowing was a little tricky with, but with some practise and patience, from the digital magazine of the pyramids I did a bit of artwork of the pyramids and the equipment and materials of how they were built. I might get better at other things in text-style in time.
Project Old School
Project Old School
In the first term at university, I was in my second project after the first project (the digital magazine designs).
The project was about creating eighteen to twenty-one task from a set of instructions on paper:
OLD SCHOOL
Two weeks of exciting and challenging manual tasks where only perfection is good enough!
Tasks 18-21 should be started immediately and progressed while you are working on the shorter exercises. As time management and organization are just as important as creativity it is crucial you complete all the tasks within the allocated two-week period.
BOOKS
TASK ONE (30 minutes):
Create an A5, portrait format, saddle-stitched book. It should contain 20 pages of white paper.
The cover should be made of a thin, coloured card. The front should feature a decorative motif of four, 5mm diameter holes cut through to reveal the white page below. The holes should run vertically along the right-hand edge: inset by 12-14mm (hole centres) with a spacing between each hole of 40.5mm (centre to centre).
Any page creep should be carefully trimmed.
TASK TWO (60 minutes):
Create an A5, landscape format, stab-stitched book.
It should contain 12 sheets of A5 paper and 2 sheets of thin, A5 card to act as a cover.
The holes for stitching should be placed at 15mm and 10mm from the left-hand edge.
The interior sheets should have a cut, decorative motif achieved as follows:
Sheet one contains a 50mm square hole (centered at 95mm from the right-hand edge and 74 mm from the top edge).
All subsequent sheets (apart from the last) should also feature a square hole that uses the same centre as above but diminishes in increments of 4mm per sheet (i.e. 46mm sheet two, 42mm sheet three
Any page creep should be carefully trimmed.
TASK THREE (45 Minutes):
Create an A5, landscape format, perfect bound book.
The cover should be made from a thin card.
The spine should be at least 5mm wide.
The first 20 pages should be vertically perforated 50mm from the right- hand edge. The final two pages should fold out (by an additional 40mm). Any page creep should be carefully trimmed.
Presentation
TASK FOUR (10 minutes):
Window mount a postcard behind an A4 sheet of mounting card. The mount should be hinged to a backboard.
The hole should be cut with a 45-degree bevel.
TASK FIVE (10 minutes):
Surface mount six postcards (all in the same orientation) on a mid-grey sheet of thin card
TASK SIX (10 minutes):
Using a pen draw the outline of a perfect, 47 mm square in the middle of a sheet of A4 layout paper. This should be presented in pristine condition, the only marks on the paper being the ink outline of the square.
TASK SEVEN (10 minutes):
Take an A4 piece of thin card. Using a compass draw a circle with a 50 mm radius, centered on the sheet.
Using a scalpel or craft knife cut out a perfect circle. Both pieces should be retained and presented.
The curve should be continuous and smooth (no corners)!
TASK EIGHT (20 minutes):
Emboss a circle, square and equilateral triangle onto a sheet of white, A4 cartridge paper. The shapes should be 45mm high, share a baseline and be centered (landscape) on the sheet.
TASK NINE (30 minutes):
Cut the word SHOP out of black paper and mount it on an A3 sheet
of white cartridge paper. The word should be set in uppercase letters 90mm high, be carefully spaced (kerned) and sit on a common baseline. You should use the font Rockwell Extra Bold.
As with all the tasks, no glue or construction marks should be visible.
The Third DimensionTASK TEN (30 minutes):
Using thick paper/thin card, create a perfect, white cube. Each side of the cube should be 90mm long.
TASK ELEVEN (60 minutes):
Using black, thick paper/thin card create a three-dimensional capital letter ‘R’.
You should use Rockwell Extra Bold and the letter should be 150mm high and 40mm deep. It should appear solid when viewed from any direction like this…
TASK TWELVE (10 minutes):
Create a full-size; first angle orthographic projection of your 3D letter R.
All construction lines should be in pencil with the actual projection rendered in black ink.
TASK THIRTEEN (10 minutes):
Create a full-size oblique projection of your 3D letter R.
All construction lines should be in pencil with the actual projection rendered in black ink.
TASK FOURTEEN (10 minutes):
Create a full-size isometric projection of your 3D letter R.
All construction lines should be in pencil with the actual projection rendered in black ink.
Colour and ToneTASK FIFTEEN (90 minutes):
On a stretched sheet of A3 cartridge paper, using red, blue and yellow
paint create a colour wheel that looks like the one to the right (omit the text).
The diameter of the wheel should be 200mm.
TASK SIXTEEN (30 minutes):
On the same sheet of stretched cartridge paper and using black and white paint, create a sixteen step Grey Scale that looks like this >>>
Dimensions: 240mm high X 50mm wide
TASK SEVENTEEN (30 minutes):
Using the same format as above, select one of the secondary colours you mixed earlier and position it in its correct position on the Grey Scale. Now create a tone scale for the colour by adding black to darken it and white to lighten. The scale should be positioned 15mm to the right of the Grey Scale. When complete, each step should be tonally identical to each of theGrey Scale steps that lay along side.
Squint your eyes to accurately judge tone!
A Parting of the Ways…
Tasks for Graphic Design StudentsTASK EIGHTEEN (60 minutes):
Print out the above document – Type Rendering.pdf.
On good quality tracing paper and using a sharp 2H pencil, carefully render all the copy at actual size. No construction marks should be visible on the tracing paper.
TASK NINETEEN (90 minutes):
Following the instructions (Constructed R Instructions) draw this letter to fill an A2 sheet (landscape format).
All construction lines should be included (either pencil or fine line pen). The finished R should be solidly inked in with… … ink!
TASK TWENTY (3 hours):
This is a poster designed by a German poster artist Erich Gruner. The original is painted in gouache (poster paint).
Using paint, create a perfect copy on a sheet of A3 paper. All colours and textures should be identical to the original.
We will be looking for accuracy of colour, tone and edge quality.
TASK TWENTYONE (4 hours):
A series of exercises to develop a feeling for curves…
Print out these three sheets (Exercise 1-3) at actual size (A4) and complete each design. You should use a pen for 1 & 2 and a brush for number 3.
Most of the designs are symmetrical but please note; a few are asymmetrical.
They come from a Victorian book of instruction for school children.
Print out these two sheets (Exercise 4-5) at actual size (A4).
Using brushes and black ink copy them at approximately the same size
on an A3 sheet of cartridge paper.
This is the only exercise where no preliminary drawing or tracing is allowed – all drawing should be done with the brush.
Tasks for Illustration StudentsTASK EIGHTEEN (60 minutes):
This portrait of a Breton boy by Henry Lamb is a pencil drawing on cartridge paper.
You are asked to make an accurate copy of it using the appropriate grades of pencil – as with all these tasks you can base it on a tracing.
The drawing should be approximately 150mm mm high.
TASK NINETEEN A (2 hours):
This is a dip pen and ink illustration by Mervyn Peake.
Make an accurate copy of it using the original media and techniques
The image size should be approximately 140 mm high.
TASK NINETEEN B (3 hours):
TASK TWENTY (3 hours):
This is a wood engraving by Clare Leighton
Produce an accurate copy of it using scraperboard.
The image should be approximately 180 mm tall.
This is a watercolour by Arthur Melville.
Reproduce it at the size of 300mm high on stretched watercolour paper.
TASK TWENTYONE (2 hours):
This illustration by Brad Holland is painted in Acrylics on canvas.
Paint an accurate copy of it 250mm high.
When I started doing the tasks, they all seemed simple enough to do, making small (A5) sketchbooks, creating 3D paper models and making some drawings in the artists’ style.
I didn't finish all the task, but when I presented my work, along with everyone else artwork with same tasks I had in the project to my tutors, they told me I had almost succeed everything, there were some that didn’t go the way they should be, either I didn’t follow the instructions properly or I didn’t read the brief more.
What I need to do in the future, I need to read briefs of the project a bit more carefully and if I need to ask for help on what I need to do, I’ll go to the tutors.
Art Requests
Art Requests
Before I started going to university, some people have been asking for some of my drawings, from friends of mine and local people from places I use to work.
Six people from The strictland Arms, have asked me for my artwork (a local restaurant and bar) during my time in college.
Graham- a former manager who has asked to do a drawing of favourite Car as a goodbye present.
Miles- a former assistant manager who has asked me to do drawings of all the Dinosaurs of Jurassic Park.
Olivia- a Staff member, who asked me to do a drawing of herself before her baby would be born.
Chris- A former pot-washer and chef, who asked me to do drawings of a couple gorgeous woman in 50 pin-ups and the same drawings I did for Miles, all the Dinosaurs of Jurassic Park.
Lee- A chef who has asked to do drawings of his dog and cat and a copy of my first comic design (The Hunter).
Ethan and Abi- Former staff members and best friends since primary school who have asked me to do drawings of themselves in their childhood.
A couple of tutors from Kendal College, I gave you some of my artwork as a thank you for teaching me.
Mike and Amy- Tutors of mine during college, I gave them a copy of my “Moby Dick” comic strip. A large drawing based on a museum fossil of a big shark tooth Megalodon with small drawings and facts about this extinct shark.
Amanda- A supporting tutor of mine when I need help, I gave her a photoshop design based on a song I have decided to use in a art project, (Take That- Rule the World).
At university I did some birthday drawings for my friends who share the same flat with me in the halls residence. Each of them in comic poster designs.
Euan- Of us in character designs at his side in Scotland.
Freddie- Of her and her dragons as Queen.
Micheal (Freddie’s boyfriend)- Of him and her as King and Queen of the dragons.
Jules- Of him a travelling wizard.
I also did some more drawing them as goodbye present
Myself (illustration and graphic design)- As “King of the Beasts”.
Euan (Filming)- As “King of the Scottish”.
Freddie (Fine Art)- As “Queen of the Dragons”.
Jules (Creative Writing)- As “The Travelling wizard of England”.
Lucy (Policing)- As “Captain of the Seven Seas”.
Chloe (Dancing)- As “Actress of Carlisle”.
Flat 250 (the flattop the halls residence we’re staying in)- As “The Gang of Flat 250”.
Everyone was happy of the work I made for them. There will be more art requests soon and I’m happy to make time to do them.
Christmas Drawings For My Family
Christmas Drawings For My Family
Near the end of the first term, for the Christmas holidays, I did some drawings for my family as Christmas presents. I did loads of poster-like-comic designs for nearly everyone during the holidays, there were two or three people I didn’t get drawing for them because they have just been invited into the family or didn’t know what draw for them.
My parents (Matt and Sarah)- A business card-holder, for my dad’s card in his office and a drawing of Grandma to remember her by.
My brother (David)- A business card-holder for his cards at work, a drawing of Grandma to remember and a metal sculpture of a Dragon I made from university.
My cousins (Ryan, Sophie, Oliver and Alice)- Small A5 books, each created in different sets for Sophie, Oliver and Alice and a comic poster of my Cousin Ryan.
My Uncle (Steve)- A drawing of my Grandma to remember her by.
My Aunt (Nicky)-A drawing of my Grandma to remember her by.
Family Friends (Mike, Linda, James and Emma)- A Christmas card for Mike and Linda and comic poster design for the twins James and Emma.
My Aunt’s boyfriend (Gary)- A Christmas card for him.
My Grandparents (John and Mary)- A Christmas card for them.
My Grandfather and Step Grandmother (Bill and Lee)- A Christmas card for them and an old drawing of his car.
My uncle’s Girlfriend (Olivia)- A poster drawing of her favourite singer Lady Reshurr.
My Aunt and Uncle (Mark and Nicky)- A Christmas card for them
My Aunt and Uncle (Tishe and Kent)- A Christmas card for them.
My Godfather (Will)- A Christmas card for them.
I am very proud of doing these drawings, next Christmas I’m planning to do some new drawings for my family.
Art Assessments
Art Assessments
From the other projects me and everyone in the course are doing, in the first term we have been doing some art assessments from one of the tutors.
The assessment is about working in a small group of four or five, of designing our characters in any decade and country we’ve been given and then creating a video together. The decade and country we have given for the assessment is the 1960s British.
What I enjoyed doing the most was creating my own character design. The did a character of my brother David, when I was at Secondary school I was making comic drawings based on the classic novel “The lost World” where there is a secret land full of Dinosaurs, my brother asked me to him in the story, so with a few others who have asked if they can be in the comic story. The funniest bit is when he asked was “Do not kill me in the story” and I said “Maybe”, so from looking through all the other design characters I’d drawn, I thought for this assessment I could the character design of my brother again. I did another character of a lizard man, but everyone in the group like my brother better.
For something like that, I hope to do some more character designs of my own next year.
Bottle-Cape Designs
Bottle-Cape Designs
Sometime around February, I made some more spare-time making sone new designs of my own.
Back at home me, my brother and my parents have been doing some bottle-cape collecting, placing them in a glass jar, since my Father owns the Brewery in Lancaster. When I start my first year at university and later on my job at the bar and hotel (Gosling Bridge) in Carlisle I do my own bottle-cape collecting. So around February I use the bottle-capes to create new designs for my Dad and the brewery.
During my time in secondary school I did a drawing of the brewery when it was built in Lancaster for my Father and other staff members, they then use it to display it on the pump-clips, posters, on bottles and on the brewery vans... this is something that has made me really happy to see.
What I did for the bottle-capes is stuck them in a large plank of wood and then paint over what I want to paint. So far I have made three bottle-cape designs a rose flower of Lancaster, the title or “Lancaster the Brewery”, and third design is about putting quotes from the bottle-capes I collected from the brewery, so far only my parents and my brother and my friends know I have made these designs, and soon the staff members of the brewery will be surprised of what I made.
Perspective Drawing
Perspective Drawings
Around October (Halloween), I did a project of perspective drawing.
There are other kinds of perspectives from whatever the eye is seeing.
Bird’s eye view- a bird seeing what’s below on the ground when flying.
Human’s eye view- when someone is seeing a view from a distance.
Worm’s eye view- a worm seeing what’s above in the sky when crawling through the floor.
The first thing I did was do some practise drawing of perspective
set of cubes or cuboids, one or two chessboards, and one or two
objects.
Next I did some more perspective drawing with a couple of
backgrounds. A chess set in a human/worm’s eye view at once, a steam
train of the famous Flying Scotsman, then the last perspective
drawings I did were of a deer park with sheep at a distance with my
family’s dog in close-up and a tunnel with one of my flatmates
(Freddie) at the other side to the entrance.
When I presented my work to my tutors, they were impressed that I
understood the meaning of perspective, the drawings weren’t exactly
they asked for the drawings they asked was of a dark alley street
with a cat in the centre.
This is another reason why I need to read the brief of the projects
a bit more. Look on the bright side, at least I tried.
Creating My Own Book Cover
creating My Own Book Cover
Before I went home for the Christmas holidays, I was given an other
project about creating a book cover in the artist’s style. But First
I need to do some research on the artist I was given in the project.
The artist I researched was Rockwell Kent, an illustrator who has
done his drawings in a mixture of drawing pen, painting and
printing. Seeing some of his artwork is a little like going back in
time, due to some of the book covers and pictures he has made like
Moby
Moby Dick
Mary Poppins
Bridget Jones’s Diary
Heart of Darkness
The Damned United
Pride and Prejudice
1984
Gorky Park
Tom’s Midnight Garden
The Right Stuff
Murder on the Orient Express
Midnight’s Children
The Tin Drum
Cold Comfort Farm
Under Milk Wood
Macbeth
Fahrenheit 451
The Motorcycle Diaries
Germinal
Pies and Prejudice
These were the chooses I needed to make, to create my own book cover. At first I wanted to do a book cover of Moby Dick, but since I’ve designed a comic strip of it I decide to do something else. I chose to do the Murder on the Orient Express. I chose this because I’m trying to do something different, plus my grandfather enjoy trains before I was born then I enjoy trains as well.
I made lots of drawings and prints of trains, the weapons from the murder (knife and gun). They were okay but weren’t exactly the style from the artist I was given in the project, eventually I did the artist’s style, made a couple of more drawing and decided which is the best one.
What I think could improve to develop if I were to do is add a tiny touch of red (blood) to make it a bit more of a murder.
Creating My Own Record Cover
Creating My Own Record Cover
After the Christmas holidays I started on the next project straight away at university.
My group and I were asked to create a CD/record cover based on the bands and the songs we were given from our tutors. The band and song I was given were...
The Joy Formidable- This Ladder is Ours!
Thomas Dolby- Cloudburst at Shingle Street
The Tornados- The Telstar
Doing some research and listening/watching the songs, I chose to do the Formidable Joy- This Ladder is ours! Looking at the video and reading the lyrics of the song, I then think of something I did when I was in college last year. I was working on one or two songs I (Take That- Rule the World or Tinie Tempah- Wirtten in the stars), using a couple of lines from the lyrics and designing a portrait of the song. This was something I did for a record cover of the Formidable Joy, doing some drawings, lino-prints and Photoshop designs I have the work printed from the computer and carefully cut and stick the design together, to the size and shape the record cover should be in. Presenting the design to my tutors, they tell me they record capture the imagination and energy from the pictures and quotes from the song.
If I was asked to create another record, for another song, I would chose the song I like to do.
Live-Drawing Sessions
Live-Drawing Sessions
After the Christmas holidays were done, in the second term, me and any of my group that were interested go to live-drawing sessions. When I was in college there were some live-drawing sessions going a few times, but I never went to any of them, it was for the older students to go to them, this year is the first time I went to any of them. Every week we were given a spot with a stand, board and A1 paper and the models we use for our artwork taking turns every week and every week we use different art materials to try out new things this year (trying to get us out of our comfort zone). The models was a man named Nick and a woman named Helen.
The materials we used for our drawings were...
Pen
Pencil
Charcoal crayon (Black, white and red)
Writing Ink (Using some water for tonal/shading)
Coloured Paint (oil paint, water colour paint or acrylic paint)
Most of the drawings I did of the models I’m quite proud, there are some drawings I think I could a lot better, what I need to do to make better drawing next year for live-drawings is practise by looking at the drawing with one eye and looking at the subject or object with the other eye.
Typography Projects
Typography Projects
What was a little more challenging and a little frustrating was the typography projects. One project was about creating an article I was given and write in a few sets

The article I was given was...
The Sun: Living with Our Star
Discover the story of humanity’s ever-changing relationship with our nearest star - the Sun - through hands-on expe- riences, unique objects, and stunning imagery in our latest exhibition. Set at the centre of our solar system, the Sun’s brilliant light shapes our sense of time, our health and our environment. People have tried to harness its power and uncover its secrets since the dawn of civilisation. From 3,000-year-old artefacts to upcoming space missions and even a nuclear fusion reactor, our new exhibition takes you on a visual, action-packed journey that brings the science of the Sun to life. Bask in sunlight on an indoor beach, try on historic sunglasses in a digital mirror, and watch the Sun rise around the world on a huge illuminated display as you explore the fascinating story of humankind’s relationship with our closest star. During the exhibition there will also be a screening of the absorbing documentary ‘Let There Be Light’. The screening is followed by a discussion—and most likely no shortage of lively debate—about the viability of nuclear fusion and solar energy as the answers to reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

Doing this was a little frustrating because I needed to get them...
one typeface in as many sizes as you see necessaryt
wo typefaces, each in two sizes
one typeface and its related bold, in one size only.
And get the titles and sentences a good composition sets was difficult to do, because from all of that this is first time I created a type of article. But when I got it all printed out and set in A1 grey card paper, the tutors have told me I made some good and strong composition in them and getting all the word in the same size as I’ve made them in.
In the other typography project, was about creating a poster for a on-coming festival about creative typography, so me and my group needed to create our own posters and the tutor can decide which is the best to have. I wish they took my design despite it too have a strong composition and good information about the festival but somehow I got the information a bit big than the last typography project it is a bit disappointing, but the bright side is that I get to enjoy doing some artwork experiments on drawing, colouring, painting and cutting typography fonts A to Z.
If I were to do it again was, only get the information a bit smaller, but create some more colourful and creative fonts.
Logo/Packaging Designs
Logo/Packaging Designs
Then the last project was about creating a logo design of my own, inspired by other logos that have been made around the world like Pepsi, Shell, Snickers, etc.... In this project, I was to work with someone (a partner) to suggest work kind of logo design we could do, the partner I was with is a young girl named Katelyn (Kate for short).
The Logos we needed to inspired by are...
New antique furniture
A portable anvil
Mirrors that make you look thin
Nylon stockings for men
Cardboard houses
An irritable Sat-nav
Yorkshire Swiss roll
A straw based breakfast cereal
A clockwork car
Fashionable shoes for dogs
Fizzy yoghurt
Thermal bras
Cuboid footballs
Heated toilet seats
A cheese fountain (for parties)
A cactus with rubber spines
Concrete mattresses
Radioactive hair dye
Hats for horses
Self-cleaning dustbins
Wool burning stoves
Pop-up self-assembly furniture
Emulsion paint for Goths
Celebrity pasta shapes
I did a lot of drawings and photoshop designs of logo names my partner written, I can’t remember what exactly each were, but those I like, I used creating the logo ideas, along with a few drawn pictures at the side. The best design and final piece I did was an antique logo design, with my dad owning a brewery in Lancaster, there is an antique shop (warehouse) next door to it, whenever I go to visit the brewery I would sometimes go the antique shop to see what they have in there (one time I went and bought an old comic for me to read with).
My partner worked on a presentation, of a logo she has worked on, when we showed to designs to the tutors, but when I tried to email the presentation to them it somehow couldn’t send, but my partner how managed to make to presentation later on.
If we were to do this project again, we would discuss some more ideas, logo designs and work on a presentation together.
Thank you for Reading...
Thank You For Reading...
Being at university has been different and challenging than it is at home and college. I came to university not only to learn more art and design, but to learn how to live with by myself away from my parents and family. This has been a good year. Doing some new artwork and skills has not only been challenging (driving me out of my comfort zone), but has made me learn new things in the course.
Maybe these new skills will let me do them again, to help me become a better artist in the next two years at university. Who knows?... Maybe you’ll do something like I have done too in the future.
After I write the notes and wrote it down on Word Document I use one of my sketchbooks that I haven’t used yet and get the writing printed and cut-out where they need to be in the book, next I took some images to go with the idea of what I made and designs at university.
But I had to get them in photoshop and get them printed, when that was done I cut out the images and stick them from where they need to be in and the last thing I do is write tiny notes around the images of my artwork so when someone reads what I did they’ll which is which with the notes at their side.
When I come for university next year (and hopefully a successful year) I would like to create another book of what I made both art projects and my own artwork to make it more exciting for people to see.

hi!! i just found you while poking around for gobelins students on twitter and i love your art, congratulations on passing!! i was wondering if you have any advice on the written exam or tips on how to prepare for it? i heard that the written exam can be given in english if french isn't your first language...
I’ll try to be very concise about this andmaybe pin it to my profile because I was in your shoes exactly a year ago, andif I made it here I think you have a considerable chance of making it too as long as you’re willing to put work into it. I want totell you what I wish I had been told.
Disclaimer: I’m definitely not the best personto ask. I’m self-taught and my situation may and will differ a lot from yours, but on top of that, bear in mind Gobelins has a ~5% admission rate. During theinterview I shared room with a person who had a stunning portfolio and had been doing two years of prepclasses to get in Gobelins specifically and didn’t get in. I don’t even understand what brought me in, but I will try to at least give you a detailedguide of what *I* did to prepare.
Important: READ THE “MODALITÉSD'ADMISSION” DOCUMENT THREE TIMES AT LEAST. It has so much usefulinformation and so many points you can’t afford to skip. If your French isflaky, ask for a friend who speaks it fluently to help you out. You *must*understand it fully if you want to get in and avoid needless calls to theschool.
Also, keep an eye on the website often. Allthe information I provide here vis a vis dates only applies to a time periodthat’s already gone and I can’t predict if the dates will be exactly the sameevery year, so double check for yourself!
French
If you don’t speak French now start asap, anddo your Duolingo and “Apprendre le Français avec TVMonde” exercisesevery day. The lessons for the 4-year program are in French and while they canbe understanding with foreigners I just strongly recommend for the sake ofcommon sense that you pick up the language, just to make the most of the chanceif you’re given it.
However, you can def do the written exam in English! The exam will be printed and handed to you in both languages, it’s not so much a test to see your writing skills (ironically) than it is to prove your drawing ones.
If you pass that first round, while they won’t require any certification, they *will* test how good you are understanding and responding in French during the interview process of the second round.
I also recommend you take special conversational classeswith a private teacher or with a French speaker the couple of weeks before theoral exam to really gain fluidity, it makes a difference.
Mental Health
Preparing for all this will be sustainedstress over a long period of time. While it’ll be intensive and will demand alot of you, bear in mind that a mentality of “every minute I spend notworking on this is a minute lost” is only going to harm you. It’s alrightto take breaks, have a social life, and space for leisure while you do prepwork. It’s alright to not be drawing every single hour and rest your mind soyou can go back to work with all your might.
Try to be demanding and to pushyourself out of your comfort zone, but do it at your own pace and alwaysleaving space for breaks and stuff that will take your mind away from it whenyou need to, like friends, videogames, or just drawing for fun. A healthy business to leisure ratio is always between ½ and 2/3.
Meditate if you can, too, just 10-15 minutesevery day. I recommend the Headspace app and it has helped me keep my coolduring really tense moments.
Open Days
Go to the open days at Gobelins in January ifyou can! I took a plane for the weekend just to go, it was expensive but Ireally, really do not regret it. Here’s why:
DONOT MISS THE FIRST DAY. They hold portfolio reviews and while you may not haveyours ready just yet, it’s the perfect chance to get an insider point of viewof how well you’re doing right now and how far from your goal you are. Make aprovisional one (or do like I did and just make a tumblr blog and throw inwhatever you’d want them to assess) and arrive early to ask for a spot at thequeue.
Youget to talk to other first-year students, who will showcase their portfolio andanswer all your questions about the admission process, the school and whateverother questions you may have.
Youget to attend conferences where they explain each of their programs in detail, and the head of the department will also answer all yourquestions.
Admissions usually open right in the middle of the open days. By all means grab a seat at the computer room and save yourself a spot in the exam process asap.
Also,if you’re a foreigner like me, you should totally go to the international classand see if you can spot somebody from your same country (or who at least speaksyour language) to hang out with for a bit.
Site note: That international class is adirect entry to 3rd year specifically for English-speaking students who alreadyhave animation experience. I didn’t apply for that so I can’t tell you muchabout it, but it’s definitely worth checking out if you want in, they say it’seasier than the main track, too.
Preparing for the written exams
First off, draw every day. Even if it’s notprep work or studies all the time, you can indulge in your OCs, OTPs, whatevermakes your heart race, but draw it and do it every day. It doesn’t have to beideal or finished either, but what really matters is that you get used todrawing a lot and make a habit of it. Quantity, consistency and speed areimportant skills for animators to have as I’ve been told and they will be looking for it since one of the parts of the inteview includes evaluating how much paper you’ve filled in a year.
Grab all the exams you can get a hold of fromthe Gobelins site and do them in the specified time (they’re on the Concepteuret Realisateur de Film d'Animation class page). When you’re done with that do themagain. Ask for feedback from your teachers and improve on them. Take aperspective book (I recommend “Perspective for Comic Artists”), take a gesturedrawing book (“The Vilppu Drawing Manual” or “Gesture drawingfor animation”), take a storyboarding and character design class (I tookSchoolism’s, which are 15$/month per class, it’s very affordable) and that’llgive you a good frame of reference. And when you’re done with the exams andknow them by heart, make your own exercises. Then do the exams again. Andalways ask for feedback, critique to train yourself against every weak pointthat you don’t want the jury to catch you doing when you do the actual exam.
Sign up for figure drawing class right now, with or without teacher (I signed up to an art club without one), the soonerthe better, and go there frequently, once or twice per week, to the short posessessions (up to 15 minutes per pose, 2 to 5 minutes would be ideal). Don’tbother doing portraits or long poses because again, what you want is to producea lot, fast. Put a lot of focus on gesture drawing, movement and speed. It’llnot only be a big chunk of your portfolio if you do pass the first round, butit hones your draftsmanship like no other exercise. You can additionally trainat home with websites like QuickPoses or the New Masters Academy figure drawingvideos, but I’d really want to stress that live models work so much bettersince they force you to interpret a 3D person.
Go to your local zoo as well, once a week oronce a fortnight, and do animal studies. If you can bring a friend it’ll help alot making it more fun but try to get used to drawing shapes that are nothuman. Understand their anatomy and try to apply what you’re learning aboutgesture from the figure drawing classes.
Draw in the street, in museums, go to a placethat inspires you or that you find curious and draw it. Draw the people topractice your characterization and caricature skills. Draw buildings to showyour perspective skills. And just whatever catches your eye. Environments and perspective are important and I strongly recommend you start by drawing from observation.
If you have a cool idea in mind or find agood exercise on tumblr to try that isn’t this, do it! The teachers appreciateinterest in several fields and if you can showcase that you’re a curiousstudent with plenty of interests they’ll consider you more seriously. I didconcept art and digital painting on the side and it ended up being a mainthing of my personal project.
And finally, go to @gobelins andraid it for advice, it’s a great point of reference to start with as well. Goto the current @crfa20 and past CRFA blogs to see what the students are up to if youwant inspo and check their profiles too.
Do this for the whole year.
Admissions open inJanuary and the earlier you can sign in the better (especially if you are aforeigner like me, you must get the equivalence with French studies recognizedofficially asap, it usually takes a while to get and it’s necessary).
On a side note, for the written exam, simplifyyour tools. You don’t have much time to elaborate or fix your mistakes so Iwould recommend you do your practice with pens (so you get used to not erasinglines and being confident with your strokes) and pencils (especially if you canget both regular, mechanical and color pencils to layer your drawings forcomplex exercises like perspective). During the exam don’t even think aboutbringing pens in case you do make mistakes you need to erase though, they arejust really good training.
Side note: if you can, all this while, make space for personal projects.Nothing that you must finish, but just produce a lot of your own content. Pick apodcast and do visual development for it, do fanart, iterate on a movie’s shots, developyour own stories through visual storytelling, do character design, storyboards, comics. Steal ideas if you must to get the creative juices flowing (but don’tpost it or pretend they are your own :V). Get acquainted with projects, explore a fewideas so that the moment you’re out of the exam room when you’re done with thewritten exam you not only have a deck of projects to choose from but are alsoacquainted with the process of carrying one forward (and also have a littlework already done).
Preparing for the oral exam
The oral exam consists of 3 parts.
A first part in which you’re not present, andthe jury will judge your portfolio, sketchbooks and demo reel without you for 30 minutes.
A second part, where you must introduce thejury to an original personal project of your own made for the admissionprocess, and defend it (in French).
A third part, where the jury will just ask youquestions (they’re usually very friendly) and judge your viability as a futureclassmate. Just be yourself!
The portfolio should just have your best, besweet, short and to the point. There is a limit of 40 pages including coversand the personal project so choose your best pieces from between your projectsand your practice. It should also cover three main points
Your skillset, which should be covered byyour studies, schoolwork, observation work and partly (but not mainly) the rest of your artwork.
Your capacity for creation and personal vision(aka what your interests are as an artist), which should be covered by the restof your artwork and other projects of your own.
Your capacity to convey and develop ideas, messages andstories through visual narration, which should be your main, personal project.
I recommend you throw in both sketches andunfinished stuff along with your most detailed and refined pieces so the jurycan have a good idea of your process, your way of solving problems and how faryour skills go. Storyboards, animatics and comics will always be a positivesince you’re aiming to study a medium that is sequential.
Also, if you can, pick other students’ portfolios for reference. They don’t need to be Gobelins or even students though, if you find a good philosophy to build your portfolio around, by all means go for it. It’ll give you a good idea of what needs to be there and what can be left out.
Lastly, while they stress that you *don’t* need toknow animation to get in since that’s what you’re applying to, you can bring ina 2-minute demo reel. I made mine with an animatic and a few animationexercises on my own, but I want to repeat what they told me, the intentionisn’t to show how good you are at it already (then what can they teach you?)but to show that you’re interested in the medium and are eager to learn.
Final note
You’re applying for an animation school, keepthat in mind always. An animator is not an illustrator or a concept artist(even if they can easily become one), and what sets them apart in my opinion is the focus on speed, gesture, quantity, and most importantly, making drawings that feel alive andthat tell something. Understand the craft, ask other animators, read books onanimation, anything you can get your hands on will help.
One of the points that I feel are the mostimportant about all this is included in the Modalités d'Admission text, whichsays that they look into a quality that would literally translate to “opennessof spirit”. I think that speaks for how open minded you are to new ideas,to working with others, to learning and to considering new points of view.
Again I don’t have all the answers, but if youare “open of spirit” and really make an effort to dive into theanimation world, look for resources and friends in this world I’m certainyou’ll find them.

i rly love my ocs ok im just gonna make this one of those posts where i talk about my life but this is the special OC Edition
idk i’ve just been working with them a lot lately and im so into it , my resolution this year was to work on that big webcomic project & everything and ya i’ll still do that but i’ve been so in love w/ my older ocs i want to fix their old shitty stories and bring them back to life, i’ve even been considering maybe using one as comic practice?? idk which one bc i keep bouncing back and forth between the two stories but ok
i always assume that nobody knows anything abt my ocs since i never really talk about them in depth but Basically i have my two casts from their respective stories: silan/sythra/chris are from may 16th, alex/andy/chrissy are from devil’s peak (edgy title from 9th grade oooo it’s just the name of the town they live in lmao)
this past week i’ve been on a may 16th kick because, well, it was literally may 16th on tuesday lol so i’ve been thinking abt them a lot and, like, i’ve been writing again?? just working on this really fuckin self-indulgent thing i started like a month ago, i picked it back up again this week and i’ve been weirdly in the Mood to write, so
idk it’s really exciting?? it feels super good to get back into writing, especially with this little for-fun no stress project, and also im feeling rly sentimental about writing these specific characters again? because i made them back in 8th grade and they were my very first gay characters and silan in particular has stuck close with me through all these years so he’s like really, really special to me
and i still have everything i wrote that year: i used to write on paper and in notebooks so i have all of those, and a couple of them are falling apart a little but i treasure them; every now & then i go back and reread it all and it’s So Bad but im so in love with it i love this stupid dumb story with these stupid dumb characters doing stupid dumb things and i get rly nostalgic and sentimental about it every time
because i dedicated a year of my life to writing this story! i had it all planned out from start to finish and wrote enough bits and pieces of it that if you read all of them in chronological order you’d be able to follow the plot quite well and that’s just huge to me?? it was gonna be an entire book there were different arcs and conflicts and everything & like im making it sound way better than it actually was through the power of Being Vague but Damn this was a huge project for me and i wrote a lot of it, i poured so much time and passion into creating it aahhh
i did write a couple other things for it here and there after that year, but technically they were non-canon? well actually i mean one was a scene i had previously written but from chris’ pov, but the actual book was from silan’s pov so it didn’t really count- the point is i haven’t actually written anything for them in about 7 years (give or take), so working on this thing i’m doing right now feels really.... significant
and ok i guess technically this scene isn’t actually canon either, it’s more like an exercise with the two of them (and also i just really really wanted to write it), but it could be canon if i could figure out a few things and that’s all that matters right
it’s like.... i’m coming back to them after some big changes? like when you haven’t seen someone in years and then you talk to them again and so much has changed since the last time you saw them but it’s still them, that’s what this feels like
because their characters (as well as their entire story) have gone through so many changes since that first year of writing them; i may not have written any actual story content over the past several years, but i’ve absolutely done a lot of brainstorming and characterization stuff with them so that they’re much more fleshed out with a lot more personality than either of them had originally (this goes for sythra too actually), and now this is the first time i’ve written them since all of those changes and it’s pretty special
i guess for example chris used to be extremely boring tbh? he had no personality other than “The Boyfriend” basically, everything he did just kind of conformed to whatever i needed from him to propel the story forward, and he went through changes that made no sense? like in the beginning he was um an asshole to silan but then the second they got together he did this complete 180 and became super nice and caring out of nowhere and it felt rly out of place, and all of it was to conform to the plot like there was no real reason for him to be acting that way on his side
now i feel like i place a much higher importance on treating characters like people instead of props, so chris has internal conflict that sticks with him and drives him to do the things he does in the story and he feels so much more alive to me now; i’m writing this thing from his pov and it’s so fun to play around with his thoughts and reactions and just like seeing what kind of a person he is as the scene plays out, it’s so good and exciting & im so proud of him hes my son & hes grown up so much im getting emotional bye
god i’ve spent way too long on this don’t let me talk about my ocs ever bc i dont know when to stop i just.... i love them so much lmao ;v;;;;;;;;;
#retag later#talkin bout stuff#rieley has oc's#srry if posts like these are annoying i just lov talking abt myself lol

My Friend Michael
The first time I met Michael was when I went back to Fordham for a night to coach a practice for my old improv team, Stranded in Pittsburgh. I was nervous and felt weird about returning to my old campus and old team to run different exercises with them for two hours and offer advice as if I had any more reason to coach than they did. At that point Michael was the only person on the team that I had never performed with. He was gigantic, confident, and so immediately funny. The first thing I ever heard him say was a long winded half sarcastic speech about how he didn’t understand the point of condoms. As most of Michael’s soapbox speeches ended this one ended with an exhausted, “I mean whatever, dude”. The next time I saw Michael was in my apartment in Harlem. I had just been asked to a produce my first show out of college a club in the East Village. I barely knew any comedians in the city yet and so went to my friend Stephen at Fordham to have him recommend some people. Michael was the top of his list. That night in my apartment all the comics I had booked for the show were going over material and pitching ideas. Most of the comics were old friends who hadn’t performed in a couple years. Michael was quick to offer feedback and punch up jokes. He encouraged everyone in the room. When it got to Michael’s turn to pitch his jokes he took out his phone and said loudly and confidently as if he were on stage, “I tell ya I love livin in New York City cause everybody’s got somethin to say!” It decimated. The whole group of us started cracking up through both confusion and genuine love for the joke. Michael told that joke about 3 times at the show the following week and at least once at every following show for a solid 8 months.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=errDGLQaKQ8 After that first show we did together he and I hung out a bit outside. He smoked a cigarette, asked me about other shows I do and what other stuff I do around the city. It came up that we were both musicians but neither of us had been in bands for a while and were trying to get back into it. On my way home he texted me asking if I wanted to come to Brooklyn that following Sunday to his buddy’s studio to play some songs. He recruited my friend Troy who had attended the stand up show and also hit it off with Mike and our friend Sam from Fordham. That was the first time we played together as Skinny Blonde. It was clear that Michael had a vision for that band and was driven towards a specific goal and specific sound. He wanted it to be noisy and fun for us and the crowd alike. While he had a clear idea of what he wanted he never was one to shut down input. He wanted us to be a band, to all have a say. Playing in that band on and off for the better part of a year will forever be some of my favorite memories. Whether it was the show we played in a public park where Michael shouted defiantly into the microphone, “Dude, like, no one needs guns. It’s so ridiculous.” or our Christmas show at the now defunct Shea Stadium (a dream venue for weirdo New York musicians like us) playing in that band was our real outlet for a long time. Lugging amps from Connecticut to Brooklyn, taking smoke and beer breaks in the studio backyard and talking conspiracy theories, and driving over the Kosciuszko Bridge yelling in thick Brooklyn accents “NOT GONNA HAPPEN! THEY AINT TEARIN THIS BRIDGE DOWN! NOT IF MY FUCKIN UNION GETS A WORD IN EDGE WISE!” The days with Skinny Blonde were some of the greatest ever.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWFz9eG2-Vc As the band dwindled Mike and I’s friendship only seemed to grow stronger. The last few months of the band were right on the tails of Michael trying to get clean again. He had been using for a few months in Fall 2016 and was finally getting some help. Just as Michael was struggling with sobriety I was struggling with the worst case of anxiety and depression that I had had in years. Though working on himself and getting better Michael was more supportive of me in those months than anyone could have been. I would constantly text him when I was struggling to leave my apartment, if I was afraid I was going to hurt myself, or if I hadn’t eaten or showered in days. He wasn’t judgmental, neurotic, or dramatic. He listened and offered advice and would often end conversations with “But honestly dude, you’re just being a pussy so whatever.” I laughed every time. Michael was the one who finally pushed me to get the help I needed. If I ever texted him a joke during that time he’d respond with a second beat followed quickly by “Also call that doctor”. I don’t know where I’d be right now were it not for his support those few months. In Spring 2017 we started out sketch team Best Good Boys with our friends Connor and Dayton. While short lived Michael contributed some of the funniest sketches I’ve ever read to that group. Michael wrote the first sketch we ever did and when I first got the script had to take a break three lines in because of how much it made me laugh. This was the opening page:
It was everything a Michael sketch was right up top: simple, insane, silly, and effortless. The sketch only got better from there and maintained to be the favorite of anyone who knew about our channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3VECUyphPg Once we all got busy doing other things and Best Good Boys dwindled Mike stayed determined. He decided that Summer that every week once a week he would come to my house. I would film a sketch for him and he would film one for me. Even if we never used some of those sketches we kept our word. We filmed a lot of insane things this past Summer. Maybe the best one we filmed (or at least the one that makes me laugh hardest) was Mike’s simplest idea yet: What if an asshole tried to rip off “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”. Mike had been playing around with this character Colton Kelly for a long time. A frat guy from Quinnipiac, Colton was determined to become a figurehead at Barstool and work with some of his favorite comedians such as Tosh, Jeselnik, and Bam Margera. Michael and I sat in his car with the engine off and the windows up in deep deep Summer heat for over an hour. As I sat there caked in sweat laughing but begging to stop the video, Mike continually said “No, we have to get this dude.” He was right and we got it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nk7hpTPipoo The Summer ended with Mike’s most ambitious creative pursuit yet. After both being rejected from a fellowship writing position at Clickhole, Michael said to me “We have all these articles we know are funny. I’ll just make my own site and you can send stuff to me if you want.” That website was “Off the Horn”.
https://www.offthehorn.com/ If there’s one thing to understand about Mike’s drive to be creative it’s this: Mike never wanted to be a writer on the show. He wanted to be the founder of the new network. Mike’s ideas were always bigger, louder, more aggressive, and simply better than anything the rest of us could come up with. Yet with that he used his drive, his talent, and his power to carry his friends along with him. While “Off the Horn” was his baby he regularly gave a spotlight to old friends and new. Anyone that had an idea Mike deemed funny had a place at “Off the Horn”. In the last couple months Mike grew what we all believed would be a fun little project to keep us all writing into an insane instagram account with the most bizarre loyal following any of us had ever seen. He had teenagers across the country taking videos of themselves covered in paint screaming to his song “Spider in My Room (I’m Tryna Fuck It)”. He had kids in the midwest going after Nazi meme accounts in Mike’s name often writing “dont steal shit from off the horn you racist scumbag #pissgang #cumgang” Mike had become the founder and leader of the #Pissgang #Cumgang movement. It was beautiful and insane.
https://soundcloud.com/eddiebagels/spiderinmyroom It would be unfair and take a decade to try to explain all the ways Michael touched myself and all of those around him. His commitment to his friends was unparalleled. He simply cared. He just fucking cared more than anyone I have ever known in my life. He picked up everyone around him and was quick to silence judgment and negativity of any kind. It’s not hyperbole to say I know that I will never know another person like him. He was the best in every possible way and every day that he’s not with us will be worse for it. With that I will say this. If there’s anything I know about Michael it’s he wouldn’t want for one second to us to put our humor and our joy aside in order to grieve. Keep laughing, keep hugging, keep yelling, keep loving and if there’s one thing to remember it’s this: The only reason the average person eats 6 spiders a week in their sleep is because Michael used to fucking eat thousands of spiders every night before bed. Rest easy, Mike. I’ll love you forever.
