there's a thickness , a heavy haze that lingers within the air. the streets still slicken with the remnants of a downpour from minutes ago. does it ever stop raining ? the two of them currently stand looking at photographs on display in the latest exhibit at the gotham museum of art ; the images that greet eyes are harsh to say the least. the aftermath of the flood , the desperation upon the various subject's features as they are met with the carnage from the night before.

i can smell it , the smell of death , flesh that had been no match for water that swept through the city ripping apart everything that had been in it's path. my head lolls to the right , examining as my eyes do not dare blink --- i cannot look away from such a scene. though , i know this scene well. i have intimate knowledge and in one of the photographs you can see why. he's carrying a small child , cape ripped as face remains concealed .... secrets , so many secrets.

he controls himself , pulls himself back as he realizes he is no longer alone. the words that invade are words that he's heard all too many times before. his brow lifts , and he then turns head to acknowledge the presence beside him. ❛ no it doesn't does it ? ❜ agreeing with her words as he then returns gaze to the various photographs , ❛ but looking away i've learned does not help nor does it absolve you of what the city has become ❜ exhaustion skirts wording as he then inhales ( ribs bruised ever so ) , and the marks of another life do their best to remind him of his duty to the city , ❛ is it your first time visiting gotham ? ❜

the  court  of  owls  is  one  organization  that  spans   CENTURIES.  an  organization   not  to  be  taken  lightly  ,   the   threat   against  BRUCE  WAYNE  grows  as  they   work  against  time.   the  pair  careful  NEVER  to  reveal  their  alias’   ,  BRUCE  AND   FELICA  separate  from  the  black  cat  ,  and  the  batman.

WILL   and   ANGER  work  as   he   FINALLY  manages   to   render  one  of  the  assassins  UNCONSCIOUS  ,              the  OTHERS   FLEE   !                                   (   don’t  worry   they’ll   be   back.   )

the hunt , his shoulders still ache from a game of cat and mouse that unfolded upon gotham nights before ----- they all blend now , his skin bears the marks of such molding. there's a clearing of throat , his throat suddenly dry. her words eerily fall upon his ears in a kind of manner that can only be described as comfortable , as if he's heard them before. the owl still watches , he moves slightly so.

the expression that's greeted by his previously placed question is one that ensures that she has not yet tired of his company ; an easy feat one would imagine in crowds such as these. he too is acutely aware of the company that surrounds --- no, SUFFOCATE would be a better use of word ...

' that or ballet ' ... yes , it seemed that we all were trained in some sort of art --- it seemed to somehow make our parents feel proud , important that we all had more to offer than wit and the beauty that seemed to blossom in the upper 1%. the beauty a direct contrast to the very world that devoured others , and i was no fool .... my insides were rotting , the stench had been the fault of generations past...

' performances ' a careful sort of smile exchanged , the gentle exhale from nostrils as he then decides to deeply inhale. ' where would we be without them .... ' his words melodic in intonation ; an understanding exchanged yet never voiced. ' made for it , it seems ' his gaze averts slightly upwards as he views the night sky ; a sky twisted and obscured by the glass that accents the owlery (though they'd never see the moon regardless). telling himself that he can make out the moon. ' what do we think , full or crescent moon ? '

owl's eyes never leave him,   even as her arm grows tired under bird's weight and she moves to shift him to a perch instead. he notably ruffles at the new distance between them, the insufferable little attention sponge. without owl and after slipping falconry glove from her hand, there's so little to distinguish her and flowy silk from a half - dozen others still patting each others shoulders at the party. though, athene supposes that by nature of her being here rather than inside that there are obvious differences left to whatever interpretation he so chooses.

just what gotham needs, another ghost to haunt it. the poor thing would probably have no idea how to handle the scale of grief and rot seeping through concrete foundations : a city built on bleached bones. a harbinger of death that would never be free of its own wailing. slim shoulders shrug, one strap of her dress slipping slightly. " would be nice to have a warning system for all of the bad, i suppose. "

she hums in thought, a glitter in gemstone eyes. a glance first at her owl and then at the other enclosures. " birds of prey can be trained. it's the crux of falconry. but they still only hunt when they want to. they're still wild. " hardly direct, but he seems smart enough to figure it out. teach a dog all the tricks in the book, but that doesn’t equate to obedience, control, or even loyalty. even lapdogs can still bite their owners if so inclined.

athene leaves a pause in conversation, a blank space in response at the mention of favored hobby. he's left her wondering more than once now ( what all does he really understand? ) " it was that or ballet. " tinkling laughter like clinking of glasses. in a way, it was a choice between the paths of her mother or her father. " it wasn't a hard change from dodging questions at galas to dodging sabres. "

Batman v Ra's Al Ghul, by Neal Adams: A Bronze Age fever dream of a comic, written in 2019-2021.

Neal Adams caps off his over 50 year career with DC comics by...them letting him write a book for the first time in a decade.

Now, Adams is famous for his Bronze Age artwork, not his writing, and it's deservedly so: this is not the comic you would pick up if you were interested in award winning writing. But I have to say, it's actually something far more fun than 'good writing'.

I think the easiest way to describe the incredibly wild vibes of this title are 'Adams writes a multiverse Bronze Age time travel AU fic', where the cast technically consists of a modern set of characters (Dick is Nightwing and both Tim and Damian are Robin), but all of the characters are drawn, talking and acting like they just walked off a page in 1974 or so.

For assistance, that's: Dick in the yellow with the very 70s black vest; Tim in the blue t-shirt; Damian in the red t-shirt; and Bruce in the suit. You end up keeping track of them in this title by their haircuts.

Bruce and Damian here cannot remember anything about being Batman and Robin; Dick and Tim appear to have shown up with a fantastical story that cannot be proven (as I said, this has INCREDIBLE reality hopping AU vibes).

Some of the characters have been mindwiped. Some of the characters are robot duplicates. A whole list of characters Adams helped create show up largely because he created them (seriously Kirk and Francine Langstrom show up for a couple of pages mostly to give Dick and Tim an airlift into a difficult to reach entrance to the Cave). Nobody sounds particularly in character at any point, but that's not really a problem in this comic, because what it really is is a giant jolt of Bronze Age style writing nostalgia direct to the brainstem.

They don't make comics like this anymore and reading one written in the 2020s like this reinforces why.

Deadman's brother Aaron and sister Zeea show up; his brother is busy pretending to be an alternate Australian version of Batman called Marvin O'Hearn, and his sister is a psychic running around in the most 70s outfit imaginable controlling things and mindwiping Bruce on Ra's orders.

(And yes, if you too just asked 'Boston Brand has siblings???' the answer is 'kinda sorta but definitely not these two', however given Adams was writing Boston in 1968 at one point he's got as much right as anyone else to claim there are additional siblings)

There's a group who PRETEND to be the Court of Owls but secretly are a group of industrialists called The Money who want to control the world via paying for legislators, judges and industry (and yes I realise that sounds exactly like the Court's thing, but Adams was almost 80 when he wrote this, he can have an expy Court if he wants one).

Bruce pretends to be Matches for a good chunk of the back end of this comic and it actually acknowledges that Matches Malone was a real gangster before he died and Bruce stole his identity (something other writers and the fandom often forget), because Adams wants one more spin with the character he designed.

There's also a moment in the sixth issue where one of Ra's pet scientists tries to sell a panel of Gotham execs on a perpetual motion machine based on electrolysis as his replacement for the current Gotham power generators and at this point I lost it giggling at the portrayal of Ra's as a cheap charlatan.

(There is also a sneaky joke that only works if you know what British salad cream is; there's this sequence of the kids talking about Alfred making sandwiches with 'crappy salad dressing' instead of mayonnaise, only this tray has been made with mayo...and it's a hint that Alfred has been replaced by a robot. I laughed; I suspect it might be non-obvious to American audiences)

This is not a comic to read if you are interested in 'main continuity' or 'coherence' or even 'good writing'. However if you want some wild antics that feel like someone's 3am fanfic AU written in pure Bronze Age vibes and to see the last work of one of Ra's Al Ghul's creators? Give it a chance. You'll never be able to predict what's on the next page.

the harsh light from two monitor screens illuminates features as handsome countenance has an appearance of annoyance. brows knit as teeth bite down on inner cheek , and he leans slightly forward in chair. the nights that he's spent out have meant that work has taken a backseat , the emails that are in his inbox total the 100s as he moves mouse to navigate the workload. a inhale as he then clears throat , and he opens one from lucius that's aptly named 'Catch-Up : READ FIRST'. bruce leans forward a little more as he clicks it open and starts to read. the lines blur as it details the latest board meeting , and various figures from each department.

fingers wrap themselves in brunette strands that are tinged with the faintest inkling of blonde. mouth moving as he continues to read silently, never hearing her enter (though he supposes it's the quality that he loves most about her) --- the way she too stays away and always is understanding about both of their long hours. deciding when to visit , after all ; she has a key. comfortable enough within his world , and what comes next pulls him from his current reverie. a kiss to his cheek as she whispers : 'guess who'

the smile evident as any traces of annoyance or deep concentration vanish and fall to the wayside. ❛ hey ... ❜ his voice soft , his one hand going from hair to reach around her waist as he pulls her into his lap , and the chair recedes from the monitor setup. ❛ finally decided to drop in ? ❜ his eyes concentrating on her emerald hues --- fingers moving to her slightly smudged lips as he traces them. never once moving to remove her mark upon him. ❛ knew i needed you ? ❜ a gentle tease before he then moves her hair behind her shoulder and kisses just below her ear ; a sigh of contentment leaves lips as words are flushed with fondness ❛ or were you just in the area ?

for so long , his world was monochromatic ; a tactic borne from a youth that had been marred by trauma. gotham , her grip growing more powerful by the day. the streets bare the marks of a rain the was unrelenting , the smell of decay ----- negligence it wraps around the city well.

the flood had changed something within him , hope had burrowed deep within lungs and slowly took a turn guiding his actions. ❛ --- to most , it must seem like some abyss ❜ bruce's eyes are trained on the various articles that are posted above the little bodega ; content that relies heavy upon fear based reporting. the front page of most of these magazines focus on the various crimes that had broken out ---- these crimes led by two criminal organizations at war. bruce knows the two parties well ... ( his nights spent tracking down the smaller criminal enterprises in hopes that he'll gain the attention of sofia or oswald ... )

my brow furrows as i scan the details , skewed reporting that leaves for a more open ended conclusion. i've long ago suspected that they both have their implants ---- reporters that do the deeds of sofia and oswald , easily swayed like colson and mayor mitchell. i see the QR code for tracking the batman and the corner of my mouth twitches slightly , a smile thought about before it's quickly forgotten.

his hands reach for the paper as he then turns to an article outlining mayor reál's plan for reform ; those in government who have been charged for corruption. going to then show the other the article that had been buried , ❛ you have to look for the good ... ❜ bruce then allowing for the smallest of sighs , ❛ difficult in gotham ---- but not impossible ❜

hi hello!! i'm super interested in getting into midnighter comics, do you have any recommendations for where to get started?? your recs have been so helpful for my comics journey so far, i truly owe you my life 🙏 just read the knight thanks to your suggestion and LOVED it, court of owls is up next

well okay this ask just made my whole day what the hell, this is what i like about comics the most, just sharing and talking about them

anyway, from the top, theres this superhero team in a world without jl, they work for the un and they are called stormwatch!

the first stormwatch comic is stormwatch 1993, i tried to read it and its genuinely awful, BUT some time after it starts, warren ellis takes over and hes genuinely a new type of god and fixes the whole thing but full disclosure i havent read it properly cause the start is so bad

the second stormwatch is stormwatch 1997, also written by ellis (saver of worlds) where midnighter and apollo (do not separate) make their first appearance! its an incredibly solid introduction and it goes from chapter #4 to #6, u can skip the rest, wont lose much context

now we start with the big guns, stormwatch is dismantled and the authority is created, a superhero (antihero) team working outside the law, and it starts with the authority 1999, where midnighter (and apollo do not separate) are finally main characters, i genuinely loved this comic so much SO MUCH

the story continues with the authority 2003, which im currently reading and is not by ellis (patron of writers), so i cannot tell u yet how itll work out but im enjoying it thus far

then (cause i havent read more stuff in between yet) comes midnighter 2007, this one is complicated? the first 10 chapters are extremely fun and enjoyable, basically episodic, mostly written by garth ennis (not quite as godly but pretty nice), then a new guy picks up the series, makes a whole saga with no apollo in it and its terrible so just... just drop it on chapter 10 ill allow it

then the n52 happens and its v confusing and scary

but then we have midnighter 2015, i have good and bad news, the bad news is its a grayson 2014 spinoff so u may be a bit lost on some context but the good news is this comic is REALLY good, its fun, its a finished story, its midnighter learning to be a person and not a killing machine, and its one of my favorite comics as of rn

lastly theres midnighter and apollo 2016 and like... i went to my bookstore to order a physical copy yesterday i am so in love with it, its aesthetically beautiful and the story is insane, basically midnighter goes to hell to save apollo but apollo is already doing a pretty good job cause hes freaking apollo

as a bonus, there are three small stories, the authority: kev, the authority: more kev and the authority: the magnificent kevin all written by ennis about a guy called kevin who actively sucks as a person and how he manages to fuck up everything all the time and piss off midnighter to no end, they are hilarious

as a disclaimer of sorts: midnighters stories, specially the ones by ellis and ennis, are comics for adults in a way batmans arent, batman is dark and sometimes scary, but these comics talk about sex, drug adiction, racism, bigotry and make fun of them, i do bow for them though, they are gritty and pretty edgy but not tasteless

How, in my opinion, DCEU should've been made.

For the record, I enjoyed most of the DCEU, but I think it could've been done better.

-OK, we start with Man of Steel, I don't think there's really need to change much in a plot.

-Then we make Batman where we see him fighting crime across the years, recruiting Robin, apprehending Deadshot, Harley, the beginning of his rivalry with Deathstroke that would explain why Slade hates him so much. No killing Dick Grayson because that's wasting character potential. Instead, he would leave to act as a solo hero, which would lead to him becoming Nightwin.

-Wonder Woman movie that would pretty much stay the same. The only difference would be lack of the opening scene in today's time.

-Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice, only maybe without Batman killing people, and maybe brainwashed Superman by Luthor to fight Batman.

-The Flash movie where we see his origin, getting his powers, etc. I think the main antagonists would be The Rogues (Reverse Flash would appear in sequel).

-Aquaman movie, where the main antagonist would be Black Manta (Orm would serve as an overarching antagonist that would be a mysterious benefactor of Manta). Mera and Vulko would also appear to help Arthur with Manta.

-Justice League movie where most would remain the way it was in Snyder Cut, only with few differences.

At this, we would start getting sequels and movies about new characters. (The order could be different)

-Batman 2, where he would continue to fight crime. More members of Bat Family could be introduced like Batgirl and Jason Todd or Tim Drake. Dick would return as Nightwing. The main antagonists could be the Court of Owls or League of Shadows.

-Wonder Woman 2 that would take place in the present day, and the main antagonist would be Cheetah.

-The Flash 2 would focus on Barry learning more about his powers and attempts to prove his father's innocence. The main antagonist would be Reverse Flash, who turns out to be murderer of Barry's mother.

-Cyborg movie that would focus on Vic's attempts to go back to having "normal" life. There could be more exploration of his and Barry's friendship. The main antagonist would be The Grid, which would begin as a virus in Vic's body before obtaining his own body.

-Aquaman 2, which would have most of the plot of the 2018 movie with Arthur fighting Orm to take back the throne.

-Man of Steel 2, which would focus on Clark trying to go back to his life and taking the next step in his relationship with Lois. Supergirl would appear, and the main antagonist would be Brainiac.

-Shazam movie that would remain the same. The only major difference would be a Superman appearance that would tease Billy to join the Justice League.

-Green Arrow movie that would show his origins, etc. Black Cannary would appear, the Dark Archer would be the main antagonist, and Batman would make an appearance.

-Suicide Squad movie, in this version, the Squad would be formed because of the fear of the government of new Meta-Humans that started to appear after the formation of Justice League. The main antagonist would be The Joker.

-Justice League 2, the main antagonist, would the Legion of Doom led by Luthor, and it would focus on trying to find the Anti-life equation. There would be few new members of the League and big tease about Darkseid coming to earth.

This is the "Phase 3" where we come to the Great finale

Batman 3, that would focus on Bruce trying to come up with a solution on how to prevent the future he had dreams about from coming true. He would also prepare his family to live without him. It would also show the end of his rivalry with Deathstroke.

-Wonder Woman 3, here are 2 ideas for the plot, 1) The main antagonist would be Maxwell Lord, which would be more comic accurate than the version we've seen in the 1984 movie. 2) It would show Diana coming back to Themyscira, which would face the ancient threat connected to the Gods. I think Shazam could also appear to help Diana in the fight.

-Cyborg 2, unfortunately I don't have an idea for this movie, if you do then share.

Aquaman 3, I think here could be used the plot of Lost Kingdom.

-The Flash 3, here the plot of his 2023 movie with Flashpoint, could be used. But it wouldn't change Batmans or anything, but it would delay a bit Darkseid arrival and would give a possibility to change the future Bruce has seen.

-Shazam 2, I think here some part of the plot of the Fury of the Gods could stay.

-Black Adam movie, that would be way more connected to the Shazam movies. Shazam and Superman would also appear.

-Green Arrow 2, here I also don't have an idea for a plot.

-Green Lantern movie, here I think we could introduce both Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The main antagonist would be Sinestro.

-Suicide Squad 2, here plot of The Suicide Squad could be used.

-Peacemaker show, pretty much the same.

-Man of Steel 3, Lois would be revealed to be pregnant, so she and Clark would start thinking about the life they want to have. Batman could also appear with a major role. I don't know who could be the main antagonist.

-Justice League 3, which would serve as a big finale, some of Snyder's ideas could be used like earth uniting against Darkseid and Batman sacrificing himself to save Lois.

I know it looks like MCU plan, but that's exactly the point, DCEU problem was that they tried to catch up with Marvel while they should do this slowly, step by step.

the darkness is comfort itself , a way in which he can hide ---- the way he prefers to conceal. though as she continues he feels the weight of words that she allows to fall , perhaps allowing for a moment of VULNERABILITY. can they imagine such a thing ? the words fall upon his own ears in a comfortable manner , bending and framing her voice just SO. it's a moment that won't go unforgotten. his spine caressed ever so , her offering is his undoing.

though , he's quick to catch himself ---- his back straightens, and his jawline tenses. ' then we intervene .... in the ways that we can ' his cobalt blue eyes go to lock upon her own eyes ; the act done within seconds. ' the fight would cost too many lives ... their greed ---- well , it appears gotham is well in that aspect is she not ? ' there's a twinge of humor , perhaps self deprecating in manner. cowl averted towards the black and white picture that is before them --- this particular drive in has a hint of nostalgia. ' tell me , do you trust me enough to work with me ? '

as the words leave lips one cannot deny that there is a clipped air to the way they accent air ; as if he's anticipating her reluctant manner. one couldn't blame catwoman , they're both not open books , and prefer to work alone ---- collaboration calls for trust , .... calls for UNPREDICTABILITY. can either of them truly say they have room for either ?

' you and i both know that gotham cannot survive another war ... if you join sofia --- perhaps in theory , maybe there's hope in rooting out the rotten parts of gotham from the inside out ... '

well at least his instincts haven't changed since they'd last seen each other .his sense of self preservation was second to none ( only on par with those selected cockroaches the city deemed too rare to die ... ) and even without the chance of a meeting with falcone he knew exactly how her domino's would be lined up. batman was a problem. there was no reeling him in. no chance to attempt domestication. he was an enigma and things , people like that couldn't be controlled - or at least coerced - made people like sophia nervous.

❛ i think she'd like to see you ... elsewhere. ❜ selina's eyebrows flicker upwards beneath her cowl , looking back to him with a hint of sympathy he'd be unaware of for now. carefully crafted words that betray absolutely everything without saying much at all. but wasn't that them all over ? every word meant so much whilst offering so little. a fear she finds indescribable , incomparable to anything she's felt before.

❛ i think we let them fight. ❜ there's a heavy sigh that follows her words. a resignation that weighs heavily upon shoulders that once would have shrugged his concerns off without a second thought. conflicts like this never end well. power and control. the city in a vice or a snare trip - the winner deciding the fate of thousands of innocents. gotham shouldn't be a proving ground. the city below them thrums with the heartbeats of living , breathing people. people who have no idea of what brews beneath the cobble streets and dramatic high-rises that dominate the skyline. reaching up with a gloved hand , selina tugs at her goggles - pulling them down away from kohl lined eyes , tired from sleepless nights and heavy from thoughts she'd rather not have.

❛ sounds too simple doesn't it. ❜ crimson ichor tinted lips offer words that sound more sincere , less performed as she looks to him for clarity - still shrouded in the darkness that surrounds them both ❛ it's too easy to let them just go at it. the collateral would be too great. there's too much risk ... ❜

049. the shores of an unknown beach, washed up from the ocean .

this beach sits tucked away , their bodies a mangled mess as his lips are reluctant to leave hers. this beach sits just shy of gotham yet far enough from preying eyes. the sand rough upon their sun kissed skin as the taste of salt accompanies a kiss that conveys their affections. his heart beats , she can feel this beating as she lays her hand upon his chest as he hovers just above. there's the faint hint of nightfall , the two of them lingering upon a state beach as they find that night is their preferred state.

there is a tug upon his heartstrings , a truth that needs to be told , and as a breath is taken ; he then moves slightly to the side as she moves to fit just so. ❛ if i were to tell you something , something i think you already know would you be angry at me ? ❜ his words soft as his fingers work their way upon her jawline , and find a home in salt curled platinum blonde hair , ❛ if it was something that i did to ensure our safety ... ❜ though ? is that why he did it ... his countenance bears the mark of a guilty conscious. ❛ i don't know if that's why i lied ---- ❜ bruce's brows knit as he shakes his head ever so.

There is a moment Riddler thinks about just pretending he is Ed, even though he certainly has some kind of relationship with Oswald too. The Riddler — or at least an early version of him — wouldn’t have existed after all, without him.  One one hand, he wants to pretend he is Ed, on the other, he can just be himself and see when the other is going to realise that he is not the same person he is usually with. In the end he goes with the latter, but he decides to try using to use Ed’s accent instead of his own.

With a grin he walks in to Oswald’s office quickly with big steps, as if he just walked into stage   ❝You know what we should do?❞ he asks bringing his hands together as if to clap but he barely makes a sound as he walks to him ❝You come to me to lose yourself then find yourself again.
